Netflix cancels House of Cards/Kevin Spacey court proceedings

3 more episodes left to see....will reserve my verdict till then. So far dragging a bit but that happened in the first season as well so not surprised.

It's not being bi or homo, it's about power and not obeying the rules set by society. Frank has no moral compass. Everything he does is for the attainment and preservation of power. Parallel can be drawn with the Roman Empire. Throw in some incest there and he could be the modern day Emperor Nero or Anti-Christ if taken from a Christian mythology stand point.
 
The Anti-Christ theory strengthen by that scene in the church in the initial episodes of season 3. The spitting on the Christ statue and it crumbling down.
 
Liked Season 1 and 2 a lot.

Season 3 is bit of a dull fest in comparison. I have only watched 4 episodes so far so may be it gets interesting towards the end of the season
 
So i finally got around to seeing this and finished all of season 1 in 3 days, have to say its the best show ever.

Now on to season 2.
 
Just remembered, new episodes coming soon after that year wait.

Interesting to see how it goes from here, considering,

His wife left him. I get the feeling that she'll end up running for president as well, or some big government related position to screw over Frank.
 
It's almost February! That means Season 4 can't be too far away. I hope they release it before the Presidents' Day long weekend, so I can binge watch it in its entirety, like I've been doing thus far with this show.

That's how Netflix works with big shows.

Throws you an entire season, you gobble it up in one night and then hate yourself for not getting enough sleep when you have school/work in 1-2 hours.

After every session of binge watching, I promise myself I'll take things slow next time, limit myself to 1-2 episodes per day so I can savor the show, but that never happens.

That's why I hoped it would be before the Presidents Day holiday. Three nights that aren't work/school nights, a few episodes each night, and there's a nice balance between binge watching one night vs one episode a day.
 
This show has become soap-opera. Story has gone further down the gutter. Even for a tv show this serial is just too unrealistic.
 
I liked the season so far. So much better than the soap opera that was season 3! I watched until episode 49. Boy, the ending was great. Underwoods for both P and VP!
 
Started Season 4, so far so good but would like it to develop into more than just a back and forth between the husband and wife. Season 1 still the best ever.
 
Nice show but not that great.

It was engaging but it never went a level up.

The whole Frank - Raymond Tusk saga in season 2 was too focused on details but it was missing the tense drama that gets you to the edge of your seat.

And I am so badly rooting against Frank and Claire. :))

Never hated the two main characters of a show more.

Hope they smashed from all sides.

But first want Doug destroyed.

Season 4 has ended on a great note so I expect Season 5 to be good.
 
Up to episode 7 so far on season 4, am really enjoying it. It has to be in the top two if not the best season in the entire series. With HOC I have a minuscule interest to watch a new season when it is released after a year but as soon as I watch the first episode I usually binge watch the entire season within a week or two. It's very impressive and dynamic.
 
Good comeback season after the steaming piles of rubbish that were seasons 2 and 3. It'll never be a great show in the class of something like, say, The Good Wife, but it does what it does well and Kevin Spacey's quips alone make it a decent watch even when you have crap like the Tusk/Feng storyline unfolding.

Just finished season 4, probably the best season so far.

Have been following it since season 2's release. Interesting to see where Underwood goes from here, he's gone into all out Stalin mode now :herath
 
Just started watching this after hearing so much positive stuff about it.

First 2 episodes and I'm already hooked.

Spacey is just brilliant.

I think this has been a problem with most American shows.Many good serials have legendary first 3 seasons coupled with good 4th and 5th season after which there is a sudden dip in quality. I can list many shows which started off pretty good but couldn't sustain the quality in the long run.Only exceptions I remember are the wire, breaking bad, sopranos and friends.
 
Watched all 4 seasons recently.

I thought the first season was superb, the next 2 seasons were poor and the 4th season marginally better than 2 and 3.

It was good but after the first season I was expecting more from this.
 
A bit like "The Office", it's a very pale imitation of the original British "House of Cards".

Somebody shoot this show in the head and put it out of its misery. Or rename it the House of Invincibles.

As a political junkie, I naturally was drawn to this show. I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 - House of Cards did a superb job of developing compelling side characters that you can emotionally invest in be it Peter Russo, Zoe Barnes or Rachel Posner. The outstanding Kevin Spacey is a villain par excellence.

However after the first few episodes of Season 2 the routine becomes wearily familiar. Opponents for Frank Underwood are never a permanent threat. There's always a way to outmanouvre them. Despite an overwhelming amount of evidence - Frank's opponents are incredibly incompetent in bringing him down. No politician in reality benefits from the sheer amount of luck and happenstance that Frank does.

Another gripe is Frank's character revolves around obtaining power for the sake of power. Frank has no discernible reasons for being a Democrat nor any particular view about how the world should function other than some kind of Darwinian free for all. In any event there are limits to what a President can do.

With the election of Donald Trump, House of Cards is tame compared to reality. So I've tapped out at the end of Season 2 - read up on all the upcoming plots to spare me from wasting any more time which confirmed my fears. Its a shame House of Cards doesn't apply its own ruthlessness in killing off characters to a show that's become a parody of itself.

I recently finished season 5. This was by far the worst season of House of Cards. The creator Beau Willimon has left the show after 4 seasons and they might have well ended the series. That being said, I did liked the last 4 seasons, I thought season 4 wasn't so bad at all.

I plan to someday put my thoughts on paper (keyboard) about my take on the theme of House of Cards in terms of Christian mythology and the character of Anti-Christ. This was explored more during season 3 and 4 but has receded in the background now.
 
This show has become so flat

I'm someone who once he is into a show always usually ends up following it no matter how poor it becomes season by season.

But even I've not finished season 5 yet

Couldn't get through the latest season. It has become long, drawn-out and wildly implausible.

Netflix’s political drama House of Cards will end with its upcoming season in 2018. The company confirmed the show’s final season to Variety today, following sexual assault allegations against the show’s leading man, Kevin Spacey.

Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed that Spacey made sexual advances toward him when he was 14; Spacey was 26 at the time. Following the allegations, Netflix told The Verge that the company, along with Media Rights capital, is “deeply troubled” by the news. “In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported,” a spokesperson says. “As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Netflix had no comment about whether the news about the show’s final season was related to the accusations. Although House of Cards has been one of Netflix’s most acclaimed dramas, it was also approaching its sixth season, and production continues for now.

Spacey has since responded to the allegations online for his “inappropriate drunken behavior.” The apology was followed by Spacey coming out as gay, drawing swift backlash from members of the LGBT community and president and CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis, for conflating homosexuality with pedophilia.

“Coming out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault,” Ellis said on Twitter. “This isn't a coming out story about Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp & those who speak out about unwanted sexual advances.”

The House of Cards actor joins a growing list of powerful men in Hollywood who are being accused of sexual misconduct or assault, starting with the accusations against Harvey Weinstein. Dozens of women have come forward to talk about Weinstein’s actions, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heather Graham, Cara Delevingne, Kate Beckinsale, Rose McGowan, and Lena Headey. The fallout from Weinstein has been swift and widespread to other industries as well.

Regardless of the recent news about Kevin Spacey, the show itself had begun to get stale and wildly implausible and was probably nearing the end in any case. The show started off brilliantly and deserves to go off with a bang and hopefully with Frank Underwood finally getting his just due. The allegations against Kevin Spacey should not impact this.
 
The show was going downhill since Season 1 anyway so this was always on the cards, pardon the pun.
 
I worry for the future of big screen entertainment. The term opening a can of worms springs to mind.
 
Really gutted about this. He always spoke well and is a legendary actor with a brilliant body of work. But then again, these allegations are of a potentially serious criminal nature.

Started watching the latest season and it's not quite the same without Spacey.

I want it to be as good as it was previously, but I'm losing interest with each episode.

What a stupid ending of season 6 :facepalm: just finished watching it and all i can say is a great show turned into trash.

Btw there was also this twist by Madam President to declare a state of emergency in the country to save her seat so she had come up with this stupid idea of mentioning "ICO (read ISIS) purchased a nuclear device from Pakistan and they are going to use it" :)))

Her Husband already used this excuse in previous season to save his a$$ and now she used it again :facepalm:

And i guess this was the final season?

I had this season downloaded 6 months and watched it only now because there wasn't anything else left on my list to watch :yk
 
This show went downhill after season 2, stopped watching midway through season 4. Was thinking of finishing it at some point, but the whole Kevin Spacey scandal put me off.
 
Seasons 1, 2, and 4 were great. Season 3 was rubbish.

Seasons 5 and 6 were among the worst things Netflix has ever produced. :))

Kevin Spacey has released a chilling Christmas video as his "House of Cards" character, and appeared to ask for "kindness" amid a series of sexual-assault allegations leveled against him.

In a minute-long video posted on YouTube on Christmas Eve, the actor said in the voice of his character Frank Underwood: "You didn't really think I was going to miss the opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas, did you?"

"It's been a pretty good year, and I'm grateful to have my health back," Spacey said.

He was fired from Netflix's "House of Cards" in 2017 after a series of sexual-assault allegations against the actor, and his character was killed off in the final season.

He has denied all allegations against him. Earlier this year a man accusing Spacey of groping him without consent when he was 18 years old dropped a civil suit against the actor, but the criminal charges against him remain.

Spacey also alluded to the upcoming US presidential election in 2020, saying: "As we walk into 2020, I want to cast my vote for more good in this world."

"Ah yes, I know what you're thinking: Can he be serious?" he said. "I'm dead serious."

"The next time someone does something you don't like, you can go on the attack," he said. "But you can also hold your fire and do the unexpected: you can kill them with kindness."

This is the second time Spacey has released videos that alluded to his ongoing allegations.

In a monologue delivered over a kitchen sink, released last Christmas Eve, he said: "You wouldn't believe the worst without evidence, would you? You wouldn't rush to judgment without facts, would you?"

Brilliant show initially but once Spacey was removed it was nowhere near as good.
 
Looks like spacey cant get over HoC, cant blame him. It was prolly his best work and the guy just ruined it with his criminal activities.
 
A mediator has ordered Kevin Spacey to pay nearly $31m (£23.2m) to the studio that made the hit Netflix show, House of Cards, for breach of contract following sexual harassment allegations against the US actor.

The secret ruling was made last year, but became public on Monday after lawyers for the studio, MRC, filed a court petition to confirm the award.

The actor has faced several sexual assault allegations since 2017.

He has denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Spacey, 62, lost his starring role as a conniving politician in House of Cards, and has kept a relatively low profile since being accused of creating a "toxic" work environment on set by allegedly making crude comments and touching young staffers without their consent.

He was one of the first major Hollywood figures to be publicly accused of misconduct in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, and as the #MeToo movement was gaining momentum.

MRC and Netflix fired Mr Spacey from House of Cards and wrote him out of the show.

As a result, the studio said it lost millions of dollars because it had already started working on the next season, the arbitration papers say, according to US media.

MRC filed the lawsuit in January 2019, seeking to recover the costs and arguing that Mr Spacey's behaviour violated the studio's sexual harassment policy.

Lawyers on both sides heard from more than 20 people in an eight-day confidential arbitration hearing in February 2020, Variety reports. It added that the 46-page ruling made five months later remains confidential.

However, the petition made by MRC to the Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday confirms that a ruling was made in the studio's favour. Mr Spacey and his production companies, M Profitt Productions and Trigger Street Productions, were ordered to pay damages, lawyers fees and court costs.

He appealed against the decision, but it was denied this month.

Mr Spacey's lawyer has declined to comment to US media.

Public allegations of sexual misconduct started to be made against Mr Spacey in October 2017, when actor Anthony Rapp claimed sexual advances were made towards him when Mr Rapp was 14.

Mr Spacey issued a statement saying he did not remember the encounter, but that he owed Mr Rapp "the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour".

In the statement, Mr Spacey also revealed he would now live as a gay man. He was criticised for linking his apology for alleged predatory behaviour with his homosexuality.

A string of accusations followed, including that he groped a teenager at a Massachusetts bar in 2016, of which the civil action was eventually dropped, and that he sexually assaulted a massage therapist in Malibu, California. The masseur died in 2019 before his legal action reached court.

Mr Spacey lost several acting jobs as a result of the allegations, but made a return to acting this year, with a small role in a low-budget, independent Italian film directed by Franco Nero.

Spacey was an A-list name and hugely respected actor who literally dropped off the face of the planet overnight.
 
Never got around to watching this, now it looks like I never will. What a shame they had to can the whole show on account of Spacey being a paedo.

You should still watch it up until he is written out, I always felt this show was the best on Netflix. I think the stuff off screen adds more layers of depth to the character he portrays lol When I first watched this many years ago, never thought I’d ever enjoy the political narrative but this was outstanding really

Actor Kevin Spacey charged with sexual assault

Actor Kevin Spacey has been charged with sexual assault against three men, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.

Five charges were brought against the 62-year-old after the Met Police reviewed evidence following complaints dating between 2005 and 2013.

Three complaints relate to sexual abuse which is alleged to have taken place in London, and one in Gloucestershire.

He is also charged with an additional serious sexual offence in London.

The first two charges relate to alleged sexual assaults on a man, now in his 40s, in London in March 2005, while a second alleged victim, a man now in his 30s, is claimed to have been assaulted in London in August 2008.

The serious sexual offence charge - causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent - also relates to the second alleged victim.

The third complainant relates to an alleged assault on a man who is now in his 30s in Gloucestershire in April 2013.

Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said that following the Met's review of evidence the CPS had "authorised criminal charges against Kevin Spacey, 62, for four counts of sexual assault against three men".

She added: "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial."

The CPS said it could not confirm or deny whether or not Mr Spacey, an American, will need to be extradited to the UK.

Mr Spacey, a two-time Oscar winner, is well known for starring in films such as Seven, LA Confidential, American Beauty and Baby Driver, as well as the Netflix series House of Cards.

The actor was also the artistic director of the Old Vic between 2004 and 2015.

Arghhhh. Sounds really despicable.

I say this as a massive admirer of Kevin’s talent and his work, going back 25+ years.

It is so upsetting to think that (as an West End director) he treated likely younger and less experienced men in the theatre industry with contempt and like they were his personal playthings. They became his victims.

He needs to go on trial ASAP.

Kevin Spacey "strenuously denies" allegations that he sexually assaulted three men, a court has heard.

The actor, 62, arrived at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Thursday morning to face four counts of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

He was accompanied by members of his legal team and two police officers.

The actor was mobbed by hordes of photographers as he got out of a silver Mercedes outside Westminster Magistrates' Court.

He made no comment as he was rushed past a queue of other court attendees and through the entrance before passing security.

The Hollywood actor, 62, spoke clearly as he formally entered his pleas to five charges at the Old Bailey in central London, having previously said he "strenuously denies" the allegations of three men who are now in their 30s and 40s.

Appearing under his full name - Kevin Spacey Fowler - the actor pleaded not guilty to four charges of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

He was granted unconditional bail and a trial of three to four weeks has been set to begin on 6 June 2023.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place in London and Gloucestershire between 2005 and 2013, when the actor was artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London.

Spacey has an address in Waterloo but his home is in the US, where he has family and a nine-year-old dog.

At an initial magistrates' court hearing in June this year, his lawyer Patrick Gibbs QC said his client "strenuously denies any and all criminality in this case".

Mr Gibbs said Spacey had travelled to the UK "to establish his innocence" and "proceed with his life".

The charges against Spacey are:

• Two counts of sexual assault on a man, now in his 40s, in March 2005 in London
• Sexual assault on a man, now in his 30s, and causing him to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent, in August 2008 in London
• Sexual assault on a man, now in his 30s, in April 2013 in Gloucestershire

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is due to go on trial on Thursday in a civil lawsuit over an allegation he sexually assaulted a boy 36 years ago.

Mr Spacey is being sued in New York by Anthony Rapp, who says the actor inappropriately touched him at a party in 1986 when he was aged 14.

Mr Spacey, 63, is separately facing five charges of sexual assault in the UK.

The House of Cards actor has denied the allegations against him.

Both Mr Rapp, now 51 and also an actor, and Mr Spacey are expected to be in the Manhattan federal courthouse when the trial opens with jury selection on Thursday.

Mr Rapp says that Mr Spacey was around 26 or 27 years old when he met him at a party at his Manhattan apartment.

In a Buzzfeed article from October 2017, Mr Rapp said that Mr Spacey had picked him up, placed him on a bed and lay down partially on top of him.

"I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually," Mr Rapp said.

His lawsuit says the alleged encounter lasted no more than two minutes and "there was no kissing, no undressing, no reaching under clothes, and no sexualized statements or innuendo".

The legal action was filed in September 2020 and accuses Mr Spacey - whose real name is Kevin Spacey Fowler - of battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Mr Rapp is reportedly seeking $40m (£35m) in damages.

Kevin Spacey appeared in a New York court on Thursday to face an accusation by fellow actor Anthony Rapp that he was sexually abused by the actor as a minor.

Star Trek: Discovery star Rapp, now 50, filed a complaint against Spacey in 2020, for advances and an alleged sexual assault at a party in Manhattan in 1986, when he was 14.

The House of Cards star, 63, has always denied the allegation.

Rapp is seeking $40m (£36m) in damages.

During opening arguments in the case, presided over by Judge Lewis Kaplan, Rapp's lawyer Peter Saghir told a jury of six men and six women that Spacey, then in his late 20s, committed "unacceptable" acts against his then-teenaged client, "intentionally to satisfy the drive of his sexual desires".

The alleged assault, at Spacey's New York apartment, "never should have happened", Mr Saghir continued. "He was 14 years old."

Spacey, who went on to star in films like The Usual Suspects and American Beauty, has kept a fairly low profile since the allegation, which emerged in the wake of the #MeToo movement, which highlighted widespread abuse in the film industry.

Last month, Rapp spoke about his accusation in an interview with BuzzFeed News.

Spacey responded online, offering his "sincerest apology" to Rapp for any "deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour", saying he did not recall the alleged incident.

Rapp filed a civil lawsuit after a 2020 criminal charge of sexual assault was dismissed by a judge.

According to court documents, Rapp claims that during the party 35 years ago, Spacey lifted him up and that his hand "grazed" his buttocks. He claims Spacey then placed him back down on a bed and "briefly placed his own clothed body partially beside and partially across" his own.

He told the court there had been "no kissing, no undressing, no reaching under clothes, and no sexualised statements or innuendo," during the alleged incident which lasted no more than two minutes.

His lawyer said Spacey's behaviour was "wrong and frankly unacceptable." "This was not horseplay," he added.

Spacey's own lawyer Jennifer Keller, however, told the jury that such an assault "never happened at all".

She noted how down the years, Rapp had "repeated the same false story [but] never repeated it to the police", arguing he had done so for "attention [and] sympathy" because he never became an international star.

Ms Keller previously told AFP in an email: "We look forward to his vindication by an impartial jury."

The trial is expected to last for two weeks, and, if found guilty, Spacey faces significant damages.

In August, a judge ordered Spacey to pay House of Cards producers $31m (£25.5m) for the costs involved in removing him from the series following a string of allegations of sexual misconduct.

He appeared at the Old Bailey in London in July to "strenuously" deny allegations of sexual assault by three other men, dating back 17 years to when Spacey was artistic director at The Old Vic theatre.

A trial will take place in June 2023, with a pre-hearing expected to take place early next year.

A tearful Kevin Spacey has told a court that he was "shocked", "frightened" and "confused" by accusations that he made an unwanted sexual advance on a teenager in the 1980s.

Anthony Rapp says he was 14 when an intoxicated Spacey, then 26, climbed on top of him at a party in his Manhattan apartment in 1986.

Both were acting in Broadway plays at the time - Rapp in Precious Sons, and Spacey co-starring in A Long Day's Journey Into The Night.

Rapp, now 50, said he squirmed out from underneath Spacey in the fully clothed encounter before running from the apartment, only to have the actor follow him and ask if he was sure he wanted to leave.

Spacey told a civil trial in Manhattan on Monday that he was "shocked" by the allegations, which were made public in a 2017 news report.

He said that, at the time, the #MeToo movement was gaining momentum and "the industry was very nervous".

"There was a lot of fear in the air about who was going to be next," he said.

"I was shocked. I was frightened and I was confused.

"I knew I had never been alone with Anthony Rapp."

Spacey 'regrets entire statement'

Spacey, 63, insisted he never had "any sexual interest in Anthony Rapp or any child - that I knew".

Rapp, who was in the original cast of the musical Rent, filed his lawsuit in 2020, seeking compensatory and punitive damages up to $40m (about £35.9m).

After the allegations Spacey was edited out of the film All The Money In The World and replaced by Christopher Plummer as J Paul Getty. He was also sacked from the political drama series House Of Cards.

In court on Monday, he dabbed his eyes as he described being pressured into making a statement saying he did not remember anything happening with Rapp, but would be sorry "if" the allegations were somehow true.

He said he had since come to "regret my entire statement", adding that his managers had said "it was the best way to contain a crisis that was going to get worse" and to avoid being accused of "victim shaming".

'My father was a white supremacist'

His account of the night was that he had met Rapp and another aspiring actor, John Barrowman, who was 19 at the time, backstage after a performance.

He had taken them to dinner, a nightclub and then to his apartment, where he had flirted with Barrowman but not with Rapp before the visitors left, he said.

Earlier, Spacey had told the court that he grew up in "a very complicated family dynamic", describing his father as a "white supremacist and neo-Nazi".

"It meant that my siblings and I were forced to listen to hours and hours of my father lecturing us about his beliefs," he said.

"Everything about what was happening in that house was something I had to keep to myself.

"We never, ever, talked about it.

"I have never talked about these things publicly ever."

As Spacey became interested in theatre, he said he endured the screams of his father, who "used to yell at me at the idea that I might be gay".

The trial, which is in its third week, continues.
