Is Pakistan home to world's cheapest Netflix subscription?

Pakistan boasts the lowest Netflix subscription rate worldwide at $2.82 per month, according to data compiled by Visual Capitalist in December 2023.

This is followed by Turkiye at $3.38, Argentina at $3.57, Egypt at $3.88, and Nigeria at $4.88 among 244 countries and territories.

In contrast, Switzerland's Netflix subscription was the priciest at $21.48 per month, $5 higher than the next most expensive country.

Wealthy countries such as Denmark, Greenland, Ireland, and the United States were also among the top five for the highest Netflix subscriptions, with monthly costs ranging from $16.46 to $15.49.

The prices fluctuate across different countries due to various influences, including economic factors, competition in the market, content licensing fees, and currency value changes.

@shaz619 Completely forgot to share this with you. I dunno if you have seen this trailer or not. The good thing is that it is coming in like 2 weeks or so. And it is supposed to gave a darker and more adult tone as compared to Batman TAS.

@shaz619 I saw Shyamalan's Trap and thought it was really good. Very Hitchcockian and Josh Hartnett is bloody brilliant in it. He well and truly holds the movie together with his captivating performance. Plot-wise it can be a bit of a stretch at times but Hartnett's on-screen presence ensures that it never gets boring. The only negative is Shyamalan shoe-horning his talentless daughter into the film in a fairly significant supporting role but that's a minor blemish in what is otherwise, a pretty entertaining and fun film.

I enjoyed the movie to and it was very Shyamalan esque lol the trickery achieved via the trailer was something, he projected your typical slasher with a rules oriented trope and creative set up, the trap you’d have thought would be flipped on all those inside the stadium; but ‘trap’ had been set up for our antagonist. No blood/guts, but great flow throughout the movie and use of psychology; especially with the character of Hartnett who as you said, really brings the movie to life with his charisma, the whole thing was a study of his mannerisms, body language and mental state. The movie was a great nod to his past high profile works. I normally buy seats in the middle row but it was a sell out and I could only manage seats just behind the disabled row, I was sceptical at first but went for it, and it added to the experience because, grounded, it felt like being in the arena.

Bit harsh on his daughter 🤣🤣🤣 I didn’t realise it was her until you pointed it out lol She was ok for the casting also considering her musical background and you know had the Taylor Swift thing going, no offence to her but the type of pop star she was playing, seldom have the ‘it’ factor. What did you think of her directorial debut with The Watchers ? poor adaptation of the novel imo but good direction / debut for her.

The new Alien movie is on my list now, I’ve only ever seen the first one which was a legendary classic not just for sci-fi, but horror to.

How would you rate the show overall among the best you’ve seen, I did watch the initial episodes but didn’t get into it, will try and stay the course if you feel it’s good.

Not heard of the books, are they highly rated? I will add them to my list, I’ve been consuming more horror however for my own development but very interested in sci-fi to, what did you make of Alien Romulus?

My movie viewing is really on low right now, I’m just watching Gentleman on Netflix , pretty decent but nothing remarkable.
Last I saw was deadpool wolverine and while it had great laughs but nothing extraordinary.

On the show its good but not great , definitely gets better with episodes though but the books are crazy good, you would love the detail just read the synopsis, it’s the biggest Chinese sci fi series and so much detailed compared to Western ones.

I just finished watching Gangs of London. It’s a solid series if you’re into gang-related dramas.

Any LOST fans here? Been meaning to watch this show for years, so finally started it last month and I've been hooked ever since. Just have a few episodes remaining in the sixth and final season. It's an amazing show.

It’s one of the greatest shows of all time and in my top 5 favourite shows ever. 10/10 and well ahead of its time, you have everything you could ask for, production values, excellent characters, an engaging plot and the most difficult attribute, emotional depth/pull.

I should have known that a man of your good taste would be a massive fan. I haven't finished it yet but I have the same feelings. And I feel like I have seen most great drama shows out there. I will hit up once I finish it to discuss the supposedly controversial ending. Btw who were your favorite characters from the show?

Also, have you seen Lindelof's other show The Leftovers? That's another 10/10 show that I would put in my Top 5. Alot of similar themes and ideas in both shows. Both are incredibly thought-provoking and emotionally moving too. Though The Leftovers is very different and smaller in scale by comparison.

For a very very long time it was my all time favourite show ever bro I was a massive mark for it, then I watched Vikings and Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul as well which made me re-consider, but I think for the emotional depth/pull this or Vikings are probably no.1, am leaning more towards LOST though. I had a massive crush on Kate so she would be a favourite, Sayid, Sawyer & John Locke, Desmond & Ben. Man too many favourites there LOL it just goes to show how such a big cast was still top notch. If I had to pick four, it would be Kate, Sawyer, Sayid and Desmond. I think a lot of shows now will have a lot going for them but it is difficult to match the emotional pull of LOST.

No not heard of that show before what is leftovers about is it a new show ?

For me the only shows that are ahead of LOST are Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Mad Men and The Leftovers. And after I finish it, I think it will probably be just behind Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.

Haha can't say I'm a big Kate fan but I'm a huge John Locke fan. Without a doubt the most tragic character of the show. Hate to be so obvious but my favorite character is Jack. I think he has a great arc and watching his growth from the first season has been great to watch. Matthew Fox is also brilliant in the role and doesn't get enough praise the same way that Terry O Quinn or Michael Emerson or some of the others got for their acting.

So basically it's about 2% of the world's population vanishing without a trace, and the emotional aftermath that follows. Like Lost it has alot of mystery and certain elements that are out there and require you to suspend your disbelief. But like Lost, what stands out is the emotional depth of the show and its characters

The Umbrella Academy I’m a sucker for time travel stories, 8/10 for keeping it weird and interesting.
Good 4 seasons and decent ending.

Yes, Jack Sawyer had the best arc on there imo and John Locke was a great figure of intrigue / helped really move the ship, what did you think of Sayid? he was like an asian / middle eastern James Bond lol Special show, need to find out where I can stream it again, it will give me new perspective as well.

Ahhh that sounds good, just realised one of the LOST co-creators also made that Leftovers show so it must be good, how does it compare to LOST & some of your all time favourite?

I also learned recently that LOST was inspired by Lord Of The Flies!! that novel has been on my list for a while, I think it’s Stephen King’s favourite book as well. Am reading Farenheit 451 atm by Ray Bradbury.

It's great up to a point but I thought it lost the plot by the final season. Probably the first show to ever get me hooked on TV serials, I had given up on British soaps after my teens.

I loved Sayid. I was surprised at what a nuanced portrayal that was of an Asian/Iraqi character considering the mass hysteria and jingoism that was likely there in America at the time because of the Iraq War. Obviously alot of credit goes to Naveen Andrews for his portrayal but credit to the writers too, who were often criticized for only being able to write White characters well. He is another character like Locke that had a really emotional and tragic arc.

Yes that's the guy I was mentioning Damon Lindelof. Which is why there are so many similar themes between both shows. Btw he wrote the script for Prometheus too.

Yet to watch the series finale but I have liked the sixth season so far.

@shaz619 Finally finished Lost. I thought the ending was great and very emotional. Overall a 10/10 show for me that I would put just behind Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.

What did you think about the ending?
Lost was a 10/10 when you were on the journey but I don't think stands up as a 10/10 when you look back.

I'd happily watch some of the GOAT shows like Sopranos again and again but couldn't do Lost again.

To each their own I guess. I agree with you that it doesn't have a great rewatchability factor. Because the mysteries of the island are kind of a big hook. And once you know them, you kinda know them. That said, because of the characters, storytelling and emotional heft, the show gets a 10/10 for me. Since I'm not a big rewatcher of Drama series anyway the lack of rewatchability doesn't bother me that much either.

What did you think about the ending?
I liked it and didn’t understand how so many people misunderstood it..

Anyone watched that Bobby catfishing thing? It’s just insane how that went on for 9 years and she didn’t figure it out..

Yeah I don't get that part either. They made it pretty clear what happened. If anything it was a creative twist because you went in thinking the flash sideways were an alternate reality.

I feel the same way, I never conform with the crowd and decided for myself, it’s nowhere near as polarising as it was. It was a little risky because stories are rarely written to have that type of ending, but I feel like it worked, we have some semblance of spirituality and purgatory is something I can suspend my disbelief for / made sense for me, and with a show which had the Island mystery at its core, you needed a big pay off to justify the build from all the earlier seasons. 10/10 show and the series as a whole has great repeat value.

Netflix has become boring, no quality content is being released there.

Yes, I have other folk who use it more then me and personally I’d cancel were it not for the WWE deal & probably the Batman animated series, then again you have an updated version on Amazon Prime which is special.

Faith was kind of a defining theme of the show so I think it made sense in the context of the show for it to end that way. The ending was bittersweet. It was sad but at the same time seeing those characters find peace was kinda nice. Above all, it gave you closure which I think should be the ultimate goal of any series finale.

Based on what I read on the internet I feel like alot of fans were obsessed with every little detail and unanswered question. Given the lore of the show I can understand fans getting fixated with small things, but I don't think that was the point of the show. It was more about the characters and their journey. And I feel like they answered most of the big, unanswered questions/mysteries in the final season. There was no way they could have tied up every loose end anyway.

My favorite TV Series finales (Drama):

1. Everyone's Waiting - Six Feet Under
2. Made in America - The Sopranos
3. With Open Eyes - Succession
4. The End - Lost
5. Felina - Breaking Bad
6. Family Meeting - The Shield
7. Papa's Goods - Sons of Anarchy
8. The Book of Nora - The Leftovers
9. Person to Person - Mad Men
10. The Promise - Justified

Homeland had a good finale but because the show was so borderline unwatchable after the first two seasons, I don't feel like giving the show any recognition.

Finished 4 seasons of Emily in Paris. Quality show.

Just kidding. I was forced into watching this.

Netflix offices raided in French and Dutch tax probe

Investigators searched the offices of streaming giant Netflix in France and the Netherlands on Tuesday, as prosecutors opened an investigation into suspected financial fraud, judicial officials said.

The search is looking into "covering up serious tax fraud and off-the-books work" and is part of a probe opened in November 2022, a source told AFP news agency.

In Paris, the investigation was opened by the Parquet National Financier (PNF), which often probes big international companies. The raid was carried out by investigators specializing in financial crime and corruption.

"We are cooperating with the authorities in France, where Netflix is a significant contributor to the local economy, and we comply with the tax laws and regulations in all the countries in which we operate," a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement.

A raid was carried out simultaneously in Amsterdam, where the company's European headquarters are based.

Emma Bosma, a spokesperson for the National Office for Serious Fraud, Environmental Crime and Asset Confiscation, said the raid was carried out at the request of French authorities.

"Cooperation between the French and Dutch authorities has been underway for many months as part of these proceedings," the French source told Reuters.

What prompted the investigation?

The reason behind the investigation has not yet been made clear. European tax authorities often have difficulties with large tech companies with online services across borders.

The PNF has not shared the details of its investigation.

In France, the launch of such a probe does not imply criminal charges and the case might not necessarily go to trial at all.

French news website had reported last year that tax authorities were suspicious of Netflix Services France had such a low turnover despite a high number of paying customers.

The French subsidiary paid less than €1 million ($1.09 million) in corporate taxes, by involving a separate unit registered in the Netherlands, La Lettre had reported. This practice was stopped in 2021.

Netflix opened its office in Paris in 2020 and employs around 40 people.

Netflix had previously run into issues with Italian tax authorities which were resolved by payment of € 55.8 million in 2022.

Mary: Netflix faces backlash for casting Israeli actors in lead roles in upcoming biblical film

Popular streaming giant Netflix is facing a deluge of criticism from social media users over its decision to cast Israeli actors in lead roles for the upcoming biblical film Mary.

Set to premiere on 6 December, the film reimagines the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and features Israeli actress and yoga instructor Noa Cohen as the titular character.

The film appears to chronicle Jesus' birth, Mary's journey as an unwed mother facing societal rejection and King Herod's "murderous hunt" to track them down, fearing a threat to his rule.

According to IMDB, the cast also includes several other Israeli actors, such as Ido Tako, who depicts Joseph, Ori Pfeffer, Mili Avital, Keren Tzur and Hilla Vidor.

Meanwhile, Academy Award-winning British actor Anthony Hopkins is set to portray King Herod.

Bottom of Form

Since the trailer debuted earlier this week, several social media users have called for a boycott of Netflix, with many accusing the platform of erasing the characters' Palestinian roots with the decision to cast Israelis.

"Netflix thought it was a good idea to cast an israali to place Mother Mary like israelis aren’t bombing the homeland of Jesus himself as well as all the churches," one user wrote.

"Israel is currently bombing the very land Jesus was born in and yet netflix thinks im gonna watch a movie about The Virgin Mary with israeli leads," another added.

"There is something profoundly offensive about having an Israeli actor play Mary, the mother of Jesus, while Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians, killing some of the oldest Christian communities in the world and erasing their heritage sites," another said.

The film's director, DJ Caruso, recently described the film as a "coming of age" story about a "smart, strong-willed young woman facing monumental challenges: overcoming social stigma, evading a jealous king and bearing the weight of a world-changing destiny."

Caruso also defended the decision to cast Israeli actors saying it was "important to us that Mary, along with most of our primary cast, be selected from Israel to ensure authenticity."

Since the war on Gaza erupted after the 7 October 2023 attacks on southern Israel, more women and children have been killed in Gaza than in any other conflict in the past two decades.

Entire neighbourhoods have been erased with homes, schools and hospitals decimated by air strikes and artillery shelling. Some buildings are still standing, but most are battered shells.

""Israeł" has destroyed 3 churches in Gaza over the past year, and ki!!ed at least 3% of Gaza's Christian population meanwhile the director of this film believed the main cast including the lead role of Mary should be "israełi" to "ensure authenticity,"" one user wrote.

Last month Netflix rejected accusations that it was engaged in anti-Palestinian bias after it deleted an entire library of Palestinian films. The platform said the titles were removed because a three-year licensing period was set to expire.

"We launched this licensed collection of films in 2021 for three years. Those licenses have now expired. As always, we continue to invest in a wide variety of quality films and TV shows to meet our members' needs, and celebrate voices from around the world," Netflix said in a statement.

MEE reached out to Netflix and Cohen for comment but did not receive a response by time of publication.

Carry-On - A super sharp and slick single-location thriller. Very creative in how it keeps ratcheting up the level of suspense. Jason Bateman is outstanding in a villainous role. Can't recommend this one enough. It's streaming on Netflix.

It's funny you say this because I watched it last night and couldn't stop laughing through it.
Maybe I was having one of my cynical moments and just couldn't take it seriously and kept picking holes in the plot

Netflix wins US rights for Women's World Cups

Netflix has secured the rights to show live coverage of the 2027 and 2031 Women's World Cups in the United States.

The deal, announced by football governing body Fifa on Friday, marks the first time Netflix has acquired live rights to a sports competition in full.

"As a marquee brand and Fifa's new long-term partner, Netflix has shown a very strong level of commitment to growing women's football," Fifa president Gianni Infantino said.

The 2027 World Cup will be held in Brazil. The host of the 2031 tournament has not been confirmed, although England, a joint bid involving the other British federations and the US have all been suggested as potential bidders.

Netflix has taken early steps into broadcasting live sport, most notably the recent boxing fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.

The streaming service said 60 million households watched the bout live, although there were complaints of technical issues with the broadcast.

Netflix will also show two NFL matches on 25 December next week as part of a new three-year deal to show Christmas Day fixtures.

In the UK, the Women's World Cup is one of the crown jewel sporting events which must be offered to free-to-air broadcasters.

The 2023 World Cup was shown on BBC and ITV with a peak audience of 12 million viewers watching Spain's victory over England in the final.

Before the tournament, Infantino threatened a TV blackout in five countries, including the UK, over what he called "disappointing" offers from broadcasters.

The BBC has also confirmed its schedule for the 2025 Women's Euros.

Netflix to raise prices as new subscribers soar

Netflix will raise prices across a number of countries after adding nearly 19 million subscribers in the final months of 2024.

The streaming firm said it will increase subscription costs in the US, Canada, Argentina and Portugal.

"We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix," it said.

Netflix announced better-than-expected subscriber numbers, helped by the second series of South Korean drama Squid Game as well as sports including a boxing match between influencer-turned-fighter Jake Paul and former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.

In the US, prices will increase across almost all plans including the standard subscription with no adverts which will now cost $17.99 (£14.60) a month, up from $15.49.

Its membership with adverts will also rise, by one dollar to $7.99.

The last time Netflix raised prices in the US was October 2023, when it also lifted costs for some plans in the UK.

Asked if prices were set to increase in the UK, a spokesperson for Netflix said there was "nothing to share right now".

Meanwhile, the company said it finished last year with more than 300 million subscribers in total. It had been expected to add 9.6 million new subscribers between October and December but far surpassed that number.

It is the last time that Netflix will report quarterly subscriber growth - from now on it said it will "continue to announce paid memberships as we cross key milestones".

As well as Squid Game and the Paul v Tyson fight, Netflix also streamed two NFL games on Christmas Day.

It will also broadcast more live events including WWE wrestling and has bought the rights for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027 and 2031.

Paolo Pescatore, a technology analyst at PP Foresight, said Netflix "is now flexing its muscles by adjusting prices given its far stronger and diversified programming slate compared to rivals".

Net profit between October and December doubled to $1.8bn compared to the same period a year ago.

Sales rose from $8.8bn to $10.2bn.
