New Zealand [137] defeat Sri Lanka [136] by 10 wickets in the 3rd match of the ICC World Cup 2019

Another one sided game. To follow up HIGHLY potentially another one between mighty Aus v Afg.

And ICC thought “minnows” like Ireland, Zimbabwe shouldn’t be part of it WC 19.

Great start to the world cup.

And you base this off a sample of three matches ?

Pakistan didn't get an 80s WACA pitch - they could've scored a decent total with some application at the crease.

No but England could have had the same green pitch like this in their match too.But no they got a nice flat pitch, yes it is just one match, let us see how many green pitches like this they get.

The introduction of T20s was the worst decision for cricket overall.

It has paralyzed some great cricketing nations.

Sri Lankan batsmen fighting it out and showing guts, against a better bowling attack on a bowler-friendly pitch. Our lot truly look like the worst in the tournament.

If they were a part of the WC there would have been more one sided matches.
If they're not good enough then they're just not good enough.

All matches have been one sided so far. Afg vs Aus game will be one sided as well

SL are mentally the toughest team in Asia. Anyone else would've folded meekly.

Sri lanka can play test cricket for next 25 overs without losing anymore wickets and they will somehow reach close to 250, that's how they have to see this....

Not the best of comparisons. This is quite obviously a green pitch and FDM is playing accordingly. They are not playing for a 350 + score . Pakistan believed yesterday's deck to be a flat one and went for their shots. It showed a lack of intelligence in not trying to adapt buy you can't compare the two matches.

That's the disadvantage of the new system. The poor playing teams do not get filtered out early on.

Also shows the big difference between Eng, Aus and Ind and the rest of the teams.

That’s irrelevant. It’s the world cup. You got to have least 12 teams. The top 10 and two others from qualifiers. In football many one sided games takes place during WC, but it doesn’t change the principle, it’s the freaking world cup! Meant for a chance to get as many. Ireland and Zimbabwe are not PNG and Hongkong. They can compete.

How many teams are gonna play in the 2023 WC?

They should have been two matches very day.One match that too one sided matches like this one and all matches so far have never created any buzz .

Where are the cricker analysts who were saying these type of pitches won't be used??
Rashid latif was the first one to say that.

Not sure about that, this is fairly pathetic. Kusal Perera is the biggest culprit so far for throwing his wicket away when set.

IDK but it should be at least 12. And I’m all for that. But I don’t think it should be more than that as there’s not enough good, ok ish teams outside top 10 to even compete at a decent ish level. Cricket lacks countries good enough outside top 10. But there’s defo two ok enough to compete teams in Ireland and Zimbabwe, to make it a 12 team WC.

Two neighbors are just blown away by the opposition. Another Asian neighbor is facing the chin music of Aussie pacers . Now it's our turn tomorrow against Thunderbolts from Rababa, lungi, Stein. Shall we put up a fight?

I am scared already also Mcculum predicts we are only winning one match :shakib

Would be interesting if a green mamba is ever dished out to England in this tournament. This game just reminds me of our match against SA in 2006 Champions Trophy where, out of nowhere, a green seamer was prepared and we got hammered.

Disgusting from Lanka. Asian cricket has never been this bad especially not in ODIs. Bowled out for 136 and can't take a single god damn wicket with the ball on a helpful pitch. Can't believe how much they gave regressed.

utter capitulation. But pitch they gave to Srilanka is suspicious.

Actually it should have evened the odds and helped lankan bowlers. On a flat track, Munro, Taylor, guptill would have smashed these guys and scored 450-500. Lanka currently are atrocious regardless of the nature of the pitch.

SL and Pakistan are the weakest in this tournament. BD, AFG are superior than them but IND is one of the potential winner along with AUS, Eng and one of SA/NZ.

There is a big imbalance of abilities from top 5 to bottom 5. Never seen such a one sided World Cup.

If we want to watch quality cricket in this WC, sadly PAK and SRL are not going to provide it.

Really depressing day for SRL cricket. They have been beating Kiwis almost every game in ICC events between 1996 to 2011, but since then have lost 2 and today is absolute shambolic performance. AFGs are giving better fight than this against Aussies.

I think, world cricket is extremely polarized these days - top 5 is well ahead of rest 5, with WIN in grey zone, capable of surprises in both end.

If we are put into bat tomorrow ........:(

Scheduling has been rubbish, why aren't there bigger games earlier?

Seriously doesn't look like we'll get a big match till Aus vs WI which is about a week away.

England-South Africa and England-Pakistan on Monday aren't big matches ?

Extremely boring WC so far, all matches really one aided. On the plua side, Pakistan will win against SL at least, so only 4-5 more wins needed :19:

It's a 2/3 team tournament.

I was quite surprised to see people saying this is the WC where every team can cause problems and isn't a WC dominated by 2-3 teams but I don't see much difference from previous WCs

PAK and BD should atleast be in that grey zone as well . Otherwise ODI cricket will be boring. However, I have no hope for SL. They are going to get slaughtered by everyone.

An absolute thrashing for Sri Lanka at the hands of New Zealand who have been superb with bat and ball. Munro hits the winning runs with a single into the legside. He finishes on 57* and Guptill finishes on 73*. Matt Henry set the tone with three early wickets and he was excellently supported by Lockie Ferguson who also took three wickets.

We cannot even fight with weak WI or AFG imagine what will happen with top 5 team. It will be a big battle between Pakistan and Si Lanka for no. 9 place.

Relax bro. Pakistan are not as bad as they performed yesterday. SL are comfortably the worst. Their match today was easily the most one sided match until now.

Afghan Batsmen are far superior than our softies and hit and miss batsmen.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka are very close in ranking

Same team whitewashed SA in SA in tests, only team apart from Aus to do so. Imagine that, lol

Karunaratne calls for batting patience after Sri Lanka’s opening loss

Dimuth Karunaratne urged Sri Lanka’s batsmen to follow his lead and urged patience as his side aim to recover from a heavy opening loss to New Zealand.

Sri Lanka succumbed to 136 all out and then a ten-wicket defeat in Cardiff, with their skipper’s gutsy half-century the standout contribution in their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup contest.

The 31-year-old has made a seamless return to one-day cricket after four years on the sidelines, scoring fifties in tune-up contests against Scotland and South Africa.

But with the 52 stand he compiled with Thisara Perera the only characterful collaboration, Karunaratne implored his players to show more caution at the wicket in the coming games.

“You need to have a target. It wasn’t a 300 wicket, so you need another game plan,” said Karunaratne, who carried his bat for 52.

“You can’t go in and hit every ball, you have to stay calm sometimes and give yourself a chance. Once you get set, you can score.

“New Zealand bowled really well, we have to give them credit but if we kept a few wickets in hand in the middle, only then would we have had a chance.

“Our batting was very, very concerning. If you’re losing wickets, you can’t even score 200, or 250.

“We needed a partnership in the middle. Once we lost the early wicket, we batted well, but we kept losing wickets.

“That’s the main reason we can’t score big runs in these conditions.”

Sri Lanka, ninth in the ICC rankings, battled manfully in the field in defence of their total but couldn’t separate Black Caps openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro, unbeaten on 73 and 58.

Three wickets each for Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson had done the earlier damage, with all of New Zealand’s featured bowlers taking a wicket in the match.

With games against Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh up next, Karunaratne’s side have opportunities to get back to winning ways.

A sizeable Sri Lankan contingent packed out the Cardiff Wales Stadium and the captain’s aim is to give them plenty to cheer in their remaining eight World Cup fixtures.

“We have eight games to go and plenty of time to turn it round,” he said.

“We need to keep our chin up. We know what we need to do in terms of building partnerships and we look forward to doing it.

“The fans came a long way to Cardiff, they spent their time and money to see a good match.

“The fans all want to win with us and share the same ambition. Losing doesn’t matter but we need to give a good fight for them. That’s the main thing.

“We are all motivated to put on a show for them.”

Confident Kane Williamson backs up the talk with emphatic New Zealand opener

Kane Williamson gave the game away on Friday on the eve of New Zealand’s tournament opener, “Some people may be saying something about us, I'm not sure. But we're talking about us.”

In those final five words, the Kiwi skipper revealed the quiet confidence coursing through his Black Caps side.

And having talked the talk, they then walked the walk on Saturday in Cardiff – giving Sri Lanka the full treatment in an emphatic ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup display.

Considering he didn’t bat, didn’t bowl, didn’t take a catch and didn’t affect a run out, it might seem a stretch to pick out the skipper as the key man in this impressive outing.

But no-one epitomises this Black Caps side quite like the man who calls the shots out in the middle.
And having laid down the gauntlet in front of the press 24 hours earlier, he then finished off a picture-perfect opening weekend that puts the rest of this World Cup on notice.

His first order of business was winning the toss. Having done that, opting to bowl first was never in doubt and thereafter his bowlers – shorn of the services of the injured Tim Southee but otherwise at full gallop – were off to the races.

Every bowling change Williamson made came off, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Colin de Grandhomme all taking wickets in the first over of their spells.

It got better still. Every single one of his bowlers ended up with a wicket and by the end even regulation fielding changes looked like masterstrokes.

He switched Jimmy Neesham into the gully halfway through a Ferguson over – and sure enough the very next ball his all-rounder grabbed a screamer to get rid of Jeevan Mendis.

Starts don’t get much better – or comfortable – than this and Sri Lanka must be sick of the sight of these Black Caps.

Downed 3-0 in the land of the long white cloud in an ODI series at the start of the year, they also lost to the Kiwis in their World Cup opener four years ago.

Sri Lanka’s total here of 136 ended up as the lowest in an ODI on this ground, but on this evidence, it won't just be Sri Lanka struggling against Williamson’s boys this summer. Runners-up four years ago, the Black Caps clearly mean business again.

No Southee or Henry Nicholls could have been a blow before the toss.

But Henry – a master of English conditions these days after his record-breaking county exploits with Kent last summer – ensured the bowlers kicked off on top.

He took a wicket with only the second ball of the match – and they pushed on from there.

Ferguson bowled north of 90mph to devastating effect to continue the emerging early theme of this year’s tournament.

And while Trent Boult went wicketless in the first powerplay, remarkable given his recent record, he was back at the end of the innings to finish off matters.

Williamson chopped and changed his bowlers with prudence – the man could do no wrong. But a word too for his opposite man Dimuth Karunaratne.

He too led from the front in becoming only the second man in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history to carry his bat, finishing unbeaten on 52 to join Ridley Jacobs in the record books.

But while he dropped anchor, the rest of the batsmen found the going tough and in response, the Black Caps showed little trouble in getting home inside 17 overs.

With Nicholls out injured, Williamson’s final wish would have been some runs for the previously out-of-form opener Colin Munro, who scored four in his only warm-up match against India.

Of course, his wish was granted as Munro and Martin Guptill both rattled off half-centuries in double quick time to boost their net run rate.

It might have been just Williamson talking up his side before this weekend. It certainly isn’t anymore.

New Zealand look impressive. I like Sri Lankan cricket but they were very poor today.

I am scared already also Mcculum predicts we are only winning one match :shakib

Mcculum thinks so inferior about us! Tigers roar ....jawab do...
In hindsight I am also scared too seeing pity condition of our neighbors

Lahiru Thirimanne says Sri Lanka are once bitten, twice shy when it comes to the challenges they’ll face at the ICC Men’s World Cup 2019 after defeat by New Zealand.

The Black Caps pace battery were shorn of the injured Tim Southee but exploited helpful conditions to great effect, bowling Sri Lanka out for 136 at Cardiff Wales Stadium.

Thirimanne says his side, basing themselves in Cardiff, can turn the 10 wicket defeat into a positive if they take learnings into their next game against Afghanistan in the Welsh capital.

“It was tough conditions, to be honest, but we batted very poorly,” he said.

“We could have easily got to 250 and had a good fight, but we couldn't manage to do that.

"We have another game in this ground so we know what to expect and we should be able to adapt to conditions quicker.

"We are playing in England, so sometimes you have to expect the ball to move around and for it to be tough. That's how cricket goes sometimes.

"The best thing we can do is put this game behind us but we need to learn from it.”

Thirimanne bore the brunt of early seam and swing, trapped lbw by Matt Henry’s in-dipping delivery with the second ball of the game.

The 29-year-old, without a one-day cap in nearly two years, is capable of prolific run-getting in the format as proven by his warm-up half-century against a tough Australian attack earlier this week.

As Sri Lanka navigate their way through eight further World Cup matches, skipper Dimuth Karunaratne provides a perfect example of circumspection at the crease in 50-over cricket.

And Thirimanne encouraged his team-mates to model their batting approach on their captain who has returned after a four-year absence from one-day internationals in rare form.

"Dimuth is the example to follow,” he said.

“It's not easy as an opener. I know it's very difficult to bat in these conditions but he fought very hard."

"We knew that New Zealand have a very good bowling attack. They capitalised on conditions really well.

"The mood is very good, because we knew this wasn't our day.

“We can't let our heads get down and walk away. We have to come back strongly."

Mahela Jayawardene: Batting first is always difficult in Cardiff but Sri Lanka needed to score 250 runs to be competitive

Especially in Cardiff, losing the toss and batting first is not easy.

The ball was doing a little bit but the important thing was to try and bat the first 20 overs without losing too many wickets.

It’s about getting through that spell, and the advantage of batting first in any scenario is putting runs on the board. You then have to get to at least that par score so your bowlers can create some pressure.

A par score would have been something in the range of 250 given the fact the wicket was always going to settle down in the second half.

After a decent partnership between Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera, we lost two quick wickets and then the New Zealand bowlers were just on top after that.

I think the mindset was stuck between whether to attack or not to attack. It’s tough when you get caught in that mindset, especially when there’s assistance from the wicket.

You just sometimes have to keep changing gears and know which bowler to go after.

It was, however, very good to see Dimuth bat really well, especially with him being the captain and having other responsibilities as well.

He hasn’t played that much ODI cricket but his Test form has been brilliant. We just needed a few other boys to bat well now too.

It was tough for the bowlers but it still showed Sri Lanka have a lot of work to do as a unit. When you don't have many runs on the board, you try to bowl that magic ball rather than holding your line and length.

In slightly friendly conditions, the fast bowlers did not really create many opportunities, even if the two New Zealand openers batted well.

Even then, though, Sri Lanka now need to look at how to take wickets and create pressure going forward.

The team need to put this behind them pretty quickly and see how they can improve.

The next game is big, and as I’ve said before, four or five wins might get you into the semi-finals as top teams will beat each other. You will lose two or three matches and have bad days.

The Afghanistan game is an opportunity but at the same time they are also a formidable team. Sri Lanka cannot take them lightly, but they should feel confident in their skills and the players that they have.

Rather than looking at the opposition, the challenge is to be the best they can be, playing the brand of cricket they want to play. Then the results will take care of themselves.

They are a formidable unit with lots of match-winners - and have to believe in their ability.

Pathetic pitch dished out today.... I'd see if the ICC puts out such a pitch for any of the big three specially England.
