A young Sri Lankan team under the watchful eyes of Lasith Malinga will look to save the series when they clash against New Zealand in the second Twenty20 International at Pallekele on Tuesday, 3 September.

Overview
Sri Lanka v New Zealand, 2nd T20I
Pallekele International Stadium, Pallekele
3 September, 7:00pm local, 01:30pm GMT

Despite allowing Sri Lanka to score in the late overs and cross 170, New Zealand showed depth in their batting and registered a comfortable win in the first T20I to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. While Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out with a broken thumb, the visitors have plenty of options in place. Their only concern will be seamer Seth Rance, who leaked 58 runs in his four overs and failed to take a wicket.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka are still in the process of rebuilding a solid T20I side. With the T20 World Cup only a year away, they need plenty of improvement. Their batting order is not consistent and their bowling looked vulnerable against New Zealand's attack. Malinga continues to be his threatening self but the other young bowlers need to step up. The home side will be particularly impressed with Wanidu Hasaranga, who made his T20I debut in the last game and was the most economical bowler of the lot.

Remember the last time

Batting first in the first game, Sri Lanka were spurred on by Kusal Mendis' 53-ball 79 and some late hitting by the middle order to post a competitive 174/4. They gained early advantage when they reduced the visitors to 39/3 in the eighth over. However, Colin de Grandhomme, who was promoted to No.4, paired with veteran Ross Taylor to put up a match-saving 79-run stand. The hosts clawed back with the wickets of the two batsmen but Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner held their nerve to take New Zealand over the line with five wickets and three balls to spare.

What they said

Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka captain: "They [youngsters] are not experienced under these conditions. We batted well [in the first T20I], this is the way to get forward. They have to take opportunities.

Ross Taylor, New Zealand batsman: "We probably didn't field as well as we would have liked to [in the first T20I]. [But] happy to get the win. The T20 World Cup is only one year away and we have our big focus on it."

Conditions
While thunderstorms are expected in the morning, chances of rain diminish in the afternoon. It will be cloudy throughout the day with a high of 23°C. While the conditions seem like they might favour fast bowlers, spinners did equally well in the last game.

SL are the worst Fielding unit on the earth. The most nonathletic.

2 dropped catches and nearly 6 missed run out chances in this game alone.

No wonder they are ranked 8th in the T20 ranking. And will slide further after this series.

That CdG wicket has really made this interesting...

De Grandhomme, Bruce fifties lead New Zealand to series win

Half-centuries from Colin de Grandhomme and Tom Bruce helped New Zealand to a four-wicket win against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, sealing a T20I series win for the Black Caps.

The pair put on 109 for New Zealand's fourth wicket in a chase of 162, and while both fell before the winning runs were hit, they were at the heart of a series-sealing win.

Lasith Malinga won the toss and elected to bat first. Tim Southee was economical up top, but it was his new-ball partner Seth Rance that made the opening breakthrough, a slower ball accounting for the removal of Kusal Mendis.

Ish Sodhi cleaned up Kusal Perera a couple of overs later, and at 48/2 after eight overs, Sri Lanka’s innings looked devoid of any real intent.

But a couple of boundaries from Sodhi’s second over opened things up for the two adventurous batsmen at the crease: Avishka Fernando and Niroshan Dickwella.

The pair put on 68 from 44 balls to give Sri Lanka a solid platform for a final flourish, and while New Zealand's bowlers made regular breakthroughs, small cameos from Shehan Jayasuriya (20 from 13 balls), Wanindu Hasaranga (11 from seven) and Isuru Udana (13 from eight), took Sri Lanka to a competitive score of 161/9.

An injury to Martin Guptill saw Tim Seifert open alongside Colin Munro. But while New Zealand's top-order showed aggression, Akila Dananjaya ripped through them to leave New Zealand 38/3 after 3.4 overs.

De Grandhomme and Bruce took over from there. Bruce ran hard, while De Grandhomme was typically aggressive, striking three maximums to go alongside his two boundaries.

With 15 required, De Grandhomme's attempt to go big over extra cover resulted in a safe catch into the hands of Avishka Fernando, and with Bruce struggling physically as the match entered its final stages, it appeared Sri Lanka were on for a heist.

Two wickets from the first two balls of the final over made things even nervier; Hasaranga first cleverly ran out Bruce before Daryl Mitchell found long-on from the next delivery. But Mitchell Santner struck an unusual six as two fielders collided on the boundary, and the left-hander then hit a boundary to wrap up the win and take New Zealand to an unassailable 2-0 series lead.

Well done, NZ.

I think they have the team to win 2020 T-20 World Cup.

Honestly a lot of teams have a good chance at winning it. Pakistan, India, Australia, England, New Zealand all have a pretty good chance and I wouldn't be surprised if any of those teams won.
