Both Australia and New Zealand have 102 points but New Zealand lead their trans-Tasman neighbours on decimal points and occupy the third spot.

New Zealand have overtaken Australia to take third position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings after the Christchurch and Johannesburg Test matches, which has resulted in them getting a bigger purse from the International Cricket Council at the extended cut-off date of 3 April.

New Zealand’s 1-0 series win over England and Australia’s 3-1 loss to South Africa have resulted in both teams finishing on 102 points in the team rankings. However, New Zealand are ahead by a wafer-thin margin, as they are now on 102.263 points and Australia are on 102.2 points.

The change in rankings means that New Zealand will now get a prize money of $200,000 for finishing third while Australia will have to be content with $100,000.

South Africa had already assured themselves of the second place and $500,000 after having taken up a 2-1 lead in the series since only Australia could overtake them in the team list. Australia needed to win 3-0 or better to overtake South Africa while they had to avoid losing 3-1 or worse to ensure that neither New Zealand nor England could overtake them.

India have already been presented with the ICC Test Championship Mace and a $1 million prize money after they sealed the top spot following victory in the Johannesburg Test against South Africa in January. South Africa had won the series 2-1.

India and South Africa had also finished in similar rankings in 2017.

Fair for New Zealand. Australia are turning out to be the biggest home bullies in cricket. I wonder how much Starc's stats are boosted by cheating.

We will soon see whether Aussies can even remain home bullies with Smith and Warner out. Fitting results for them.

Congrats New Zealand. Is this the fist time they have overtaken Australia in Tests?

And wow. We're no 7 and 7 points behind SL? That's just horrendous.

Sri Lanka just whitewashed Pakistan at UAE. Please have some respect for them, they're not a bad side in tests.

You have been no. 7 for quite some time now, I am surprised that you are surprised. Also Sri Lanka just recently whitewashed you in your home, this shouldn't come as new that SL is a better test team than pakistan

One of the folks here argued with me other day that Australia is real no 1 and better than India.:))

How come Pakistan has become so bad after Misbah took them to #1

Expect Pakistan to do better if they can unearth some good test class pace bowlers.

Batting is ok with Azhar, Shafiq, Sarfaraz as the backbone. Babbar can be the home track bully. Probably need 1 more decent batsman. :shezzy
Spin is taken care of with Yasir.
Pace bowling is in a shambles though. Not even a single test class pacer. Wahab is good on his days, rest are Bangladesh level.

The South Africans hogged three spots in the latest MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings for bowlers, with Kagiso Rabada still No.1, Vernon Philander shooting up to No.3, and Morne Morkel finishing his international career at No.6 with a career-best 800 rating points.

All this, even as the Player of the Series in the New Zealand v England exchanges, Trent Boult, ended up slipping by one spot.

Keshav Maharaj picked up 17 wickets and Nathan Lyon took 16 in the four Tests between South Africa and Australia, but the fast bowlers did the most damage on the whole, which was reflected in the tables released on Wednesday 4 April.

Rabada slipped in terms of points – 902 after the Port Elizabeth Test to 897 at the end of the series, which his team won 3-1 – but held on to the No.1 spot. The 22-year-old fast bowler ended the series with 23 wickets, which was the best across the two teams. His 11-wicket haul in the second Test was the highlight of his series.

Philander, meanwhile, saved his best for last. On the final day of the series in Johannesburg, Philander struck with his very first ball, then again later in the over, and had Australian batsmen walking back with alarming frequency in a memorable spell.

He started the day’s play with 0/9 from five overs and ended with 6/21 from 13 to send Australia hurtling to a 492-run defeat.

Along the way, he brought up 200 Test wickets as well and moved up six spots to No.3 with 845 points. Philander is separated from Rabada by James Anderson, who had a decent time in New Zealand with eight wickets from two Tests.

Philander’s contributions with the bat – 155 runs in seven innings – also helped him move past Ravichandran Ashwin and Ben Stokes to No.3 in the all-rounders’ list.

Morkel, meanwhile, bowled despite a side strain in the Johannesburg Test, his last, and returned 1/34 and 2/28 to take his series tally to 15 wickets from three Tests.

After the third Test in Cape Town, he had reached a career-high 798 points and bettered that by getting to 800 points by the end of the series and keeping his sixth position intact.

He was, however, joined there by Pat Cummins, one of the better performers for Australia in a series they might want to forget for a variety of reasons.

Cummins picked up 5/83 and 4/58 in the last Test to get to 22 wickets for the series and moved up 12 places to joint No.6.

Across in New Zealand too, the pacers held sway by picking up 58 wickets as compared to seven by the spinners.

Boult topped the wicket-takers’ list at the end of the two-Test series – won 1-0 by New Zealand – with 15 strikes and was followed by Tim Southee (12), Stuart Broad (11) and Anderson (8).

Despite the starring role he played, winning the Player of the Series award, Boult ended up slipping a spot in the rankings, from No.7 to No.8, even as Broad (up five spots to No.12) and Southee (up three places to No.13) gained.

For Boult, who had shot up the rankings after a match haul of 9/99 in the first Test in Auckland, the comparatively poorer returns in the drawn second Test – 6/176 – affected his position.

The top 10 is completed by Ravindra Jadeja (No.4), Ashwin (No.5), Rangana Herath (No.9) and Neil Wagner (No.10).
