New Zealand has overtaken Pakistan to go up to fifth position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings after completing a 2-0 win over Bangladesh in their two-match series which culminated in Christchurch on Monday.

New Zealand, which had won the first Test in Wellington by seven wickets, has gained two points to move up to 98 points. It is now one point ahead of sixth-placed Pakistan and three behind England in the rankings lead by India with 120 points.

Australia is currently placed second with 109 points while South Africa is third with 107 points.

Bangladesh, which started the series at 65 points, has slipped to 62 points to complete a forgettable tour of New Zealand. It lost all three One-Day Internationals, all three Twenty20 Internationals as well as a limited overs tour game against a New Zealand XI on this tour.

MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings (as on 23 January 2017, after the New Zealand v Bangladesh series)

Would it be correct to assume that if we win the Test series against Windies but lose a Test Match, Sri Lanka would overtake us ?

From 1-6 in a matter of a few months. Wow, what a journey...

Away series tend to do that , few good home series can mean 6 to 1.

Really? Has this happened before?

1 to 6 (potentially 7) or alternately 6 to 1 in about 6 months?

Curious.

Deserved although don't think NZ are exactly playing great cricket. SA will be a different story.

Not from one to six.

This is the effect of a team which has crossed the line from "veteran" to "elderly and past-it".

But Australia has just proved how rapidly a young team can rise!

I would highly doubt that much of a fall from grace. Has it even been 6 months?

Pakistan got to top rank six months and 1 day ago.

But yeah the downfall has been even quicker. They lost the top rank in first week of October so its only been about 4.5 months.

When everyone around us is winning...we've lost 6 tests in a row.
So what do you expect?

Kiwis aren't good enough either.

Pakistan is quite easily a superior test team to NZ, SL and WI.

They have defeated SL in their backyard and drew to England in England.

NZ never won against any team away from home in their last tours and drew only vs England and Pak. They also have gone through home losses vs Aus and SA.

Congrats to the NZ kids Aman

That is not a small achievement.

Now starts the climb to the top again. Only issue I see is that we we are not playing a team ranked higher than us this year.

Pakistan's lack of ruthlesness in UAE is costing them. They rarely destroy teams there. NZ, SL, WI all managed to win a test there. Compare that to Australia, South Africa, India who completely wreck teams at home. So, the away losses do not hurt that much.

This is the point. I think India has set a very good benchmark for Pakistan at home. They have to win every match. Although it wont help with the rankings but Pakistan has to aim to win every match against the windies on the away tour.

Few drawn tests would have kept it higher than 6th rank. Also, Pakistan was having rating points of 110 so not exactly too much high to have any cushion for couple of whitewashes.

please tell who much points will pakistan gain by beating westindies 2-0 or 3-0

Not much because WI is a lower ranked team. If WI had rating of 130 or higher then gain would be significant.
However from the example a gave if South Africa played Pakistan instead of India and Pakistan had beaten them 4-0 then Pakistan would have been no.1.

Our efforts in test cricket in 2017 will help us stay at 6 basically. We are not playing a higher ranked team team this year. So it will be frustrating for the fans to see that even if engineer whitewashes, we will still stay at 6. Maybe by some random permutation we might move to number 5 depending on what other teams do: but I doubt that since all those other teams are ranked higher than us.

You guys just aren't ruthless at home, so when you play poorly away you lose a lot of points.

Where as India for example destroy top sides at home.

Against teams like SA, NZ, Eng and WI- we won 11 out of 13 tests. Won all the series' comprehensively.

Pakistan on other hand won 6 tests out of 11 and lost 3. Winning 2 series and drawing the other 2.

Pakistan's road to no.1 was pure luck tbh, at that time most sides were lingering around the 110 mark and India with home season coming up was set to get there, but a draw result to WI due to rain ensured Pak got there.

Rankings aside, Pakistan has a good reason to be excited in 2017.

Although WI have been a poor side for quite sometime now, Pakistan haven't managed to beat them in a series yet. Blame it to inconsistency of your side or 2 test series which doesn't give scope for any slip ups.

Who knows, this year might be the year you win in WI for the first time.

Absolutely. I am excited for two reasons: first to fix our anomaly of the record in windies and secondly for a post misbah captaincy. Not because i dislike the guy, but because it's going to be good to see how we shape as a team under a new captain.

No doubt that Test matches are currently as exciting as they have ever been. More than 50% of Tests are genuinely gripping, and the occasional one of those is exhilarating.

But sadly the quality is atrocious. Such low quality. Not many great players left.

Even 10-12 years ago the quality was much higher than this.

pak deserve it for somehow managing to make colin de grandhomme look like an african glenn mcgrath

That truly reflect the current potential & performance of this Pakistan side. I was really surprised when they top the table. They were really lucky to played most games in deserts.
