As the Test season ends across the cricketing landscape for now, action in white-ball cricket is just about to notch up a mile. Sure, T20 leagues are popping off everywhere you look, continuing global domination, but something special is brewing on Indian soil. The Black Caps are flying in from the ‘land of the long white cloud’, ready to lock horns with the Men in Blue in what promises to be an absolute cracker of a white-ball series. The action kicks off at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, which is all set to host its first-ever men’s ODI game, before moving to Rajkot, and wrapping things up in Indore. Think of it as the appetiser before the main course, a five-match T20I feast that will serve as the final audition before the big dance at the T20 World Cup, which is barely a month away from now. With the calendar flipped to a new year and the next ODI World Cup still a good eighteen months down the road, both teams will be viewing this series through fresh eyes. It's a clean slate moment. India and New Zealand can actually play around a bit, figure out their best combinations, and start mapping out where they want to be when the next World Cup cycle really heats up. Now, these two haven't faced each other in ODIs since that Champions Trophy final back in March 2025, so there's a bit of anticipation in the air. India last suited up for 50-over cricket against South Africa at home in December, scraping through with a 2-1 series win. New Zealand, meanwhile, had a more comfortable outing, blanking the West Indies 3-0 at home in November. After missing the series against the Proteas due to a neck spasm, Shubman Gill returns to lead a 15-member Indian squad, which features Shreyas Iyer as the deputy. Iyer’s participation was subject to fitness clearance, but he is all set to feature after that Australia series Down Under, with Ruturaj Gaikwad making way for him despite scoring a century in his last dig.

Apart from them, the big daddies of Indian cricket also return to treat the fans. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both now working as full-time ODI compatriots, have been in some fine nick. Rohit has churned out three half-centuries and a hundred in his last six ODI appearances, in fact, in the Champions Trophy finale, he scored a 76 against the Kiwis. Kohli's somehow gone one better, smashing two fifties and two tons in that same stretch.

Pointless series. Until and unless India starts playing that extra batsman at #6, they will struggle to dominate ODI tournaments

India suffer injury blow ahead of New Zealand series

Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand after being diagnosed with a side strain (Oblique Muscle Tear).

The issue came to light when Pant felt a sudden onset discomfort in his right lateral abdominal area while batting in the nets during India’s practice session on Saturday afternoon at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara.

Dhruv Jurel has been named as his replacement by the BCCI.

Pant’s last appearance in an ODI for India came in August 2024 in Sri Lanka. With just 31 ODIs under his belt, Pant has scored a solitary century and has five fifties to his name.

India already have KL Rahul as their first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the squad, who had also captained the side in skipper Shubman Gill’s absence during their ODI series against South Africa.

Along with Gill, India also have Shreyas Iyer returning from injury into the setup.

I really hope this pathetic bowling heavy strategy of India's is brutally exposed enough times before the World Cup.

No other point to this bilateral series

New ball swinging a bit for kiwi fast bowlers. Indian openers should see off this new spell.

300 in modern day ODI cricket is what 200 score used to be in 90s.

Rohit used to be an aggressive and selfless opener which was actually helping India. Ever since Gambhir has threatened to drop him, he has resorted to tuk tuk conservative approach.

:salute

NZ are looking good to win this and make our Sunday better. :dav

India's decline in Test has already started. I expect decline in ODI too (as soon as Rohit and Kohli retire). :inti

Kohli is pausing just a wee bit more as he has progressed through his career to generate more power on the shot. Just like AB.

I wonder if he learned this bit more from AB since they're mates and he's now applying it more in his game.

He didn't want his test game to be spoilt before. Now not a test player anymore. He is more free spirited. This is new aggressive version of Kohli. Kohli always had aggressive side. But controlled it.

Last few Indian ODIs have shown India are all about Rohit and Kohli. Get them out quickly and India lose. :inti

Once these two retire from ODI, I can see tough times for India in ODI.

Why is this Fish_Mate derailing the thread with off-topic nonsense? Focus on the game. Not users. :inti

IND - 99/1 (16 overs).

202 to win from 34 overs.

Just need to get Kohli out quickly. Last man standing. :inti

Ruturaj made a ODI 100 dropped. Jaiswal made a 100 dropped. This is a pointless series. Should have continued with them.

First they said wait till Azhar and Ajay Jadeja retire, then they said about SRT, then Dhoni Raina and Yuvi , now the haters talking about wait till Rohit and Kohli retire

Whilst across theEastern Border they are still awaiting for their team to move from minnows to mediocre :cobra

That is just a bait lol They know next gen will pound their sorry a** team much like these two were doing.

Why are sanghis going off-topic? Focus on the game. :inti

You lot should be concerned India are still reliant on Kohli and Rohit. Not a good sign. Upcoming ODI decline is likely (just like Test). :inti

LOL garbage bowling from Adhitya. How is he playing international cricket?

Minnow to mediocre… defines that pathetic team perfectly. They are struggling to make even that leap and have fallen away recently.

Clowns are talking as if other team players dont retire
They are used to getting one decent player every decade. So thought of that average player retiring sends chills down their veins. They can’t imagine how other teams are able to sustainably produce good players

3 dots.

Need some tight overs and 2-3 quick wickets preferably (including Kohli's wicket). :inti

Sweepy stat padding through meaningless score updates...crazy Bangla logic...posters got net access to check PP threads but not check scores themselves... :shakib

Apart from blind hatred, he just doesn't have any ability to assess/identify the talent.

It is funny Indians are talking about things which have nothing to do with the thread or the game. :inti

Stick to topic, guys.

India need 140 to win from 132 balls.
