History is written by the victor. So truly said. In 2024, the Blackcaps stunned the cricketing world by sweeping India 3-0 in a Test series, outplaying the hosts in their own backyard. Fast forward to January 2026, and they struck again, landing another seismic blow by clinching an ODI series win on Indian soil for the very first time in 37 years. Yet, the appetite for rewriting records clearly remains unsatisfied. This is New Zealand’s fifth T20I tour of India, and the hosts have not lost a home T20I series since 2012, against the Kiwis. A five-match series awaits, beginning at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur before the contest journeys across the country, eventually reaching its finale in Trivandrum, a.k.a Thiruvananthapuram. Suryakumar Yadav returns to lead the side, but the spotlight firmly rests on his form. By his lofty standards, 2025 was a year to forget. His highest score was 47, he failed to register a single fifty, and finished the calendar year with just 218 runs at an average of 13.63. Those numbers underline a rare slump for one of the world’s most feared T20 batters. With the World Cup looming large, SKY will be desperate to rediscover his rhythm and authority at the top. There are encouraging comeback stories too. Shreyas Iyer is back in the T20I setup after a two-year absence, while Ishan Kishan earns his recall on the back of a strong Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign. In the bowling department, Ravi Bishnoi returns to bolster an already potent spin attack. Alongside Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel, India boasts a quartet capable of choking sides through the middle overs with guile and variation. The pace unit looks equally menacing. Jasprit Bumrah leads the charge, supported by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who comes in buoyed by his batting heroics in the ODI series.

Add Hardik Pandya to the mix, expected to deliver in clutch moments with both bat and ball, and India appear well stocked in the all-round department. His recent form has been reassuring, and the hosts will hope that momentum continues. Batting, however, remains India’s biggest strength. However, in Tilak Varma’s absence, at least for the first three matches due to an injury, his composed batting will be missed, given how instrumental he has been since his debut. Either Iyer or Kishan will be summoned for that role at number 4. Abhishek Sharma has made run-scoring look effortless, piling up five fifties and a century in 2025 while averaging just under 43 at a staggering strike rate of 193.47. He is likely to open the innings alongside Sanju Samson, who looks increasingly comfortable at the top. With Iyer, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh to follow, India’s batting unit shapes up as a formidable force. Buoyed by their recent ODI triumph, New Zealand land with a fresh swagger and a point to prove in the shortest format too. Mitchell Santner resumes duty as captain, while the Blackcaps’ bowling arsenal looks fully reloaded. The returns of Jacob Duffy and Matt Henry add bite, completing a fearsome pace quartet alongside Zakary Foulkes and Kyle Jamieson, both of whom enjoyed a standout run in the ODI series.

Yes Arshdeep is good option as well ( I pick Rana for his batting as well) but I completely forget Shreyas , I'll Play him at 5 and Hardik at 6 and dropp Rinku.

:kp
Nah I don't think that's necessary. Rinku is fine at #7. No need for Shreyas at #5. Dube can play there.

The World Champions have lost only 5 matches out of last 41 T20Is.

The undisputed no.1 T20 team on the planet should win easy against a solid Kiwi side.

Kishan backed at No.3 as India look ahead to T20 World Cup

Speaking on the eve of the first T20I against New Zealand, India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Ishan Kishan will slot in at No.3, underlining the management’s faith in the batter who is part of defending champions' ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 squad.

Kishan, who has not featured for India since the T20I series against Australia in November 2023, has scored 796 runs across 32 T20Is at an average of 25.67 and a strike rate of 124.37, with 31 of his 32 innings coming in the top three of the batting order.

“Ishan (Kishan) will play at No 3. He is part of our World Cup team,” said the India skipper.

“He hasn't played for India in a very long time. He has been doing well in domestic cricket. Since we have picked him in the World Cup team, he deserves to play.

With Tilak Varma unavailable, the Indian captain made it clear that Kishan is the best fit for the role as India look to settle combinations early in the World Cup year.

“It would have been a different situation if the question was about No.4 or No.5. Unfortunately, we are missing Tilak, so I feel Ishan is our best bet at No.3.”

Suryakumar, who is all set to play in his 100th T20I for India, also played down concerns about his own form, stressing that personal performances take a back seat in a team sport, particularly with a major home T20 World Cup on the horizon.

“If this was a singles sport, if I was playing table tennis or lawn tennis, then I would have thought about it more.

“In a team sport, my first responsibility is how the team is playing. If the team is winning, I am happy with that. If I am able to perform then it's okay, if not then no problem.

“There is no room for personal milestones, it's a team sport. Everyone has to step up, do well and be happy for each other. That's the most important thing in a team atmosphere and that's what I like to do."

Reflecting on his own preparation, the dazzling batter revealed that he has gone back to the foundations that shaped his success in T20 cricket.

The 35-year-old has been facing a rough patch in the shortest format for India, with no half-century scores in his last 22 innings, since October 2024.

"I thought about what aspects (of my batting) gave me an identity in T20 cricket. I have worked on all those things.

“When I came into the Indian team in 2021, (I looked at) how I used to bat in the last 3-4 years. I thought about it, I understood my game, understood the template of this team, and thought about how we want to play cricket going forward.

“So, I practised accordingly and that's how I am practicing in the nets as I used to do before and I will try to play in the same way during the match."

Despite the recent 2-1 ODI series defeat at the hands of New Zealand, the Indian captain believes pressure is an essential part of elite sport and something that can energise the team as they build momentum in T20Is.

“We have been playing T20 cricket well.

“There is pressure in any sport, and there is no fun playing without pressure. It creates a different energy and motivates us. I am sure it will be a very good series.”

India and New Zealand face off in the first T20I in Vidarbha on Wednesday, 21 January.

Big ask for NZ to pull this , India are a beast in T20s , they might score 300 tonight

For those who sound too confident, Hope so it's not a disgrace like 3rd odi.

India have become an one man army in T20.

Get Abhishek out and it is game over. :dav

He scored 83 out of 146 today. It shows others are average.

Abhishek is out.

NZ are somewhat back in the game.

IND - 149/6 (12 overs).

Not convinced of Rinku Singh's place in the team. His batting has regressed and he does not offer anything with the ball. Basically does not deserve a place in the team.

Someone like Shashank Singh or Ramandeep Singh should come into the team.

Pitch seems good for batting.

I think NZ can chase down 220 here. They are fielding a strong batting unit today.

90% of the modern day Indian batters are poor batters/T20 hacks. Rinku is no exception. :inti

It was evident from the U-19 Asia Cup and Emerging Asia Cup. It was also evident from the recent Test series and ODI series.

India are mostly winning games due to veterans (Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Kuldeep etc.).

This tulla Indian brigade is a beast against crap attacks in meaningless matches on highways. Let's say during the WC.

IND - 211/7 (18 overs).

India are probably winning this one but I hope NZ will win. Pitch is good for batting. :inti

238/7.

Just above my par score prediction of 230.

Even if NZ loses this, they will come close to the target.
