Misbah-ul-Haq unlikely to play. Azhar Ali likely to lead. What should the team be for the must-win match?

Ross Taylor a potential doubt for the 2nd Test.

New Zealand batsman Taylor to see eye specialist

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor is to see an eye specialist before the second test against Pakistan, coach Mike Hesson told reporters on Sunday.

The 32-year-old did not bat in the second innings of New Zealand's eight-wicket victory over Pakistan at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, with Henry Nicholls instead taking his place at the crease in the number four spot.

Hesson said the problem with Taylor's vision out of his left eye had been evident for about a year, but it was treatable. He had an initial exam on the first day of the test on Thursday.

"He's (Taylor) seeing him tomorrow (Monday)," Hesson told reporters. "It appears to have deteriorated a little bit.

"Ross had his (regular check) six months ago and there were no issues at all. So it might have come a little quicker than we'd like."

A decision on whether Taylor would be available for the second test starting in Hamilton on Nov. 25 would be made after Monday's examination, Hesson said.

Nicholls had little to do, however, with just one run needed when he strode to the wicket, after captain Kane Williamson had guided them to the brink of victory with a brisk 61.

Opening batsman Jeet Raval then struck a four to end the game after lunch on day four as the hosts reached 108 for two after being set 105 to win the game.

Bring Shafiq at 5, debut Rizwan at 6, potentially replace Rahat with IK or Wahab, rest should be the same.

So Taylor has a problem with his vision.. leatherface58 Space Cat

I did say his hand eye was deteriorating lol.. hopefully it isn't serious and he can recover..

Who are they going to send as Misbah's replacement.

I hope to God it is not Hafeez, should send Usman Salahuddin. I know it is a severely left field move, but the guy is smashing centuries for fun. Why not cash in on his form? He may flop in alien conditions though.

While we are at it lets also send Rahat Ali back, utterly useless.

Why so mean to Rahat :rahat

I feel kinda bad for criticizing him so much. But he should not have played if he was not 100%. Health above all. Don't want him to go blind or something by neglecting his condition.

Sarfraz, Azhar and Asad are liability overseas. Can't drop Azhar and Asad, as no replacements available, but I will drop Sarfraz for Rizwan. Rizwan is more suited to conditions where fast bowlers are used more. However, in Asia, I will select Sarfraz.

I didn't get the exclusion of Wahab! He was your best fast bowler in UAE against West Indies. I will drop Rahat for Wahab, as an X-Man is a must in the starting XI.

Intrigue surrounds the state of the Seddon Park pitch for Friday's second test in Hamilton.

The seamers had conditions to suit at Hagley Oval in Christchurch and New Zealand were well worth their eight-wicket win over Pakistan yesterday.

Indeed, New Zealand seam quartet Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and man of the match Colin de Grandhomme shared all 20 Pakistan wickets as they rushed their side to victory inside three days.

Last season, Seddon Park was bouncy but uneven for the test against Sri Lanka and even captain Kane Williamson, a Northern Districts man, wouldn't commit himself on what's likely to be produced.

"It will do a bit at some point. It's tough to say," he said last night.

"At times, we've had one that spun a little bit later on, we've had one that's been perhaps a little bit up and down, but all of them have been fair surfaces and brought all different skill sets into it."

If it's grassy and helps the seamers once again, Pakistan's stand-in captain Azhar Ali won't be surprised.

He has no beef with whatever is served up.

His argument is that you get what you're given by the hosts and you get on with it.

That said, Azhar, who hit a triple century three tests ago against the West Indies, reckoned Hagley Oval was a more seam friendly surface than any Pakistan encountered on their recent tour of England " and perhaps the most challenging he'd played on in his international career.

I wouldn't play Sharjeel. Yes we do need some intent in the batting lineup, but theres more chance of Rizwan succeeding than Sharjeel in these conditions. Plus its about time Rizwan got a chance after warming the bench in England.

Not having Misbah will make Pak XI weak.

Our batters will have to bat out of their skins. Especially Shafiq, Azhar and YK.

Looking forward to see how Sharjeel plays in test cricket.

Rizwan is a useless selection. Sharjeel will destroy Wagner.

Rizwan for Misbah only change I would make. Now that our batters have one game to get use to conditions (not an ideal one) got a feeling we'll bat better in this one. Need Yasir to have a better game with the bowl as well.

Regardless of what happens, we will not win this game, and this match will give even further fuel to the fire to remove Azhar Ali from ODI captaincy.. his haters will have a field day in this game..

And it will be based on his captaincy, his 'defensive' mindset, and his Misbah like attritional approach..

Which I don't think he does, but people will over-read the decision he makes and allege that to his appearance and call it timidness

Azhar Ali should go back to #3 in Tests

Now that Azhar Ali is captain I hope he insist in going back to #3 and talk Mickey into agreeing with this decision. Pakistan was well set when Azhar was batting at #3 in tests. Babar is too raw to bat at #3 while Asad does not have the heart to play at #3. This should be the batting order:

#1 Sharjeel
#2 Sami
#3 Azhar
#4 YK
#5 Asad
#6 Babar
#7 Sarfraz
#8 Sohail
#9 Amir
#10 Wahab
#11 Rahat

With Sharjeel opening, Azhar will be coming in at 3 within the space of a couple of overs anyway. Whats the point? We've finally found a solid pair of openers and people want to chop and change.

Left-left opening combo is also bad.

I am really curious to know if Mickey seriously is considering Sharjeel. The last test opener who could wack a six out of no where in the first over was Shahid Afridi long long time ago.

Sharjeel could be mighty effective ala Sehwag with all the fielders in the ring if he just remains careful with everything given on the offstump.

Sharjeel is the way to go. Sharjeel needs to play test cricket for him to reach his full potential and Pakistan to reap rewards. Play him in the whole tour of NZ and Aus.

I am worried about the weather more then anything else, according to google it's not looking very promising in Hamilton over the next few day's . NZ will be confident defeating Pak in under three days!!

Hope Pakistan win the toss, to make this game interesting.
Think otherwise without Misbah Pakistan will crumble, also think Kane is gunna score big as he is well due for a big hundred.
Pakistan should drop Yasir and be aggressive with 4 seamers, also they are getting the batting wrong, both the openers have been defensive, this never works, you need one guy to be the anchor and the other guy to score, aslo Babar needs to bat like a ODI cos his technique aint gunna cut being defensive, also think Sarfraz should bat at number 5 cos at 7 he trys to do to much counter attacking, he should just bat and look for singles as he looks good when he does that

No misbah is a massive blow as both a batsmen and skipper. This means Azhar, shafiq and YK need to step up and score big for pakistan in the 2nd test, we cant afford any more substandard batting in this very short series.. the poor preparation for series has already caught us cold in 1st test we lost!

Cricket: Ross Taylor sees off eye issues to train ahead of second test

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor has been given the all clear to train with the team in Hamilton this afternoon ahead of Friday's second test against Pakistan.

Taylor has been troubled by sight issues in his left eye in recent months. He saw an optometrist in Christchurch and has seen one specialist.

"He was given a clearance to train with us today and he's going to leave early to see another specialist this afternoon," New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said today.

"That will determine whether he is available for the next test."

Hesson said it would not be until after the specialist visit today that they will have a clear indication on whether Taylor will be ready for the test. but "he's been given clearance to train and that's a really good sign. I think he's feeling a lot better now (he has the training clearance)."

He acknowledged surgery may be in 77-test veteran Taylor's immediate future.

Should play Sharjeel Khan, he needs practice before the 1st odi. These meaningless Test brings nothing for cricketers apart from controversies and injuries.

Those are excellent temperatures for winter though. I thought NZ was a cold-ish country

Edit: it's summer in the southern hemisphere

25-27 Degree Celsius is considered "hot" in NZ. Therefore you could pronounce NZ as a cold country.

According to Mickey Arthurs recent interview, it's almost certain Rizwan will play ..

Playing sharjeel means we will have to do musical chairs with the batting order again

id say bring shafiq to 3 and put rizwan at 6

Guys been touring with Pakistan non stop since late May but has not played one test game and not more than 2-3 ODIs

Ross Taylor cleared for 2nd Test after undergoing eye examination

Veteran New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor was cleared Wednesday to play in the second Test against Pakistan after undergoing a further eye examination.

However, he will require surgery on his left eye after the match, team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek said.

Taylor's left eye had a form of scarring that needed attention, but it was not yet impacting on the 32-year-old's sight, he added.

"Ross has a pterygium on his left eye, which is gradually getting bigger. Both the specialists he's seen in recent days have advised Ross still has 20/20 vision and Ross himself feels confident he is ready to play," Simsek said.

However, the 77-Test veteran Taylor will miss the limited overs series in Australia early next month while he undergoes surgery.

"Ross will still need to undergo a medical procedure on his eye to remove the pterygium before it gets any larger," Simsek said.

"He'll have surgery following the Test which rule him out of cricket for approximately four to six weeks."

The 32-year-old Taylor has an average of 45.95 but has only averaged just over 10 in his last 10 innings, scoring 11 in his only knock against Pakistan.

BJ Watling open to some variety in New Zealand test pitches

It's the batsman in BJ Watling talking.

Despite his side's comfortable first test win over Pakistan, and their reasonable home record of late, the Black Caps wicketkeeper isn't steadfastly of the belief that test cricket pitches in New Zealand must be green.

While the traditional method for the five-day game has been: win the toss, bat in the best conditions, then cash in on the deterioration when bowling last, that theory has actually been swivelled on its head in this country.

Emphasising how much the other way conditions have gone, it has now been a remarkable 19 successive tests in New Zealand where the team winning the toss has opted to bowl. You have to go all the way back to January 2011 - against Pakistan in Wellington - where that wasn't the case, with the Black Caps batting first in a drawn encounter.

After captain Kane Williamson called correctly in the series opener in Christchurch, his bowlers made use of the seam-friendly conditions, and there'll be no surprises what will happen at toss time in the second test in Hamilton, starting Friday, with New Zealand 1-0 up and the Seddon Park pitch sporting the accustomed green hue on Wednesday.

But while Watling acknowledged that it doesn't generally take long for the green shade to morph colour, it still wasn't the be all and end all of how it must be done.

Asked if he wanted to see green ones for the entire home summer, Watling took a long think before saying: "It just depends on who we're playing and I guess the conditions around for that week.

"I hope we could produce other wickets as well, especially in first class cricket, if we can produce some turners to help us out when we go overseas and stuff, I think that's beneficial for New Zealand cricket."

That comes in the wake of the Black Caps' 3-0 humbling on their tour of India, where they struggled against the hosts' spinners. Ironically, Watling is hoping there isn't much turn in Hamilton this time out, in order to negate the threat of Pakistan's dangerous leg-spinner Yasir Shah.

"We really don't want to bring him into the game too much," he said.

It's home comforts, really, and the advantage of being the host nation, sizing up who's in the opposition.

Pakistan's Azhar Ali noted Hagley was possibly the most seam-friendly pitch he had played international cricket on. But Watling suggested there was "a little bit there", and that the hosts just bowled in good areas, and that his side were light in first innings runs and "could've scored 300-350".

As for Watling himself, he'll be looking to re-find his touch with the bat, having gone through a lean trot of 13 innings without a half century.

With Colin de Grandhomme's introduction into the side, there was some thought Watling could be promoted a spot to No 6, however he remained at seven, and is likely to continue to do so, in what has become a sort of babysitter role for some rather enthusiastic shot-playing tailenders.

"There's a little bit of chat around it, but, look, I've done reasonably well at seven, and I quite enjoy the role that I've had," he said. "It's a role where I get to work with the likes of Tim [Southee] and Trent [Boult] and Waggy [Neil Wagner] and try and see them through to a total that we can defend or set."

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricke...n-to-some-variety-in-new-zealand-test-pitches

Hope to god we win the toss and bowl first then.

It actually doesn't matter if the pitch is that green. If it doesn't get too hot, it would move all day for 2 days or more. In fact if Pakistan win the toss and bowl first, there is a chance they might bat before third session, which is not too ideal .

NZ's Watling plays down Hamilton toss

New Zealand wicketkeeper BJ Watling is playing down the significance of winning the toss with the prospect of another green pitch for the second cricket Test against Pakistan in Hamilton.

In the first Test in Christchurch, the Kane Williamson-skippered Black Caps had the tourists on the back foot from the start, dismissing them for 133 in their first innings before going on to win by eight wickets.

However, Watling believes it was the Black Caps' bowling more than the helpful pitch that paved the way to victory at Hagley Oval.

"I think we bowled in really good areas and asked a lot of questions," he said.

"Those conditions are obviously different to them but we were able to put Pakistan under a lot of pressure with the ball."

The 31-year-old is expecting the world's second-best Test team to be far more competitive at Seddon Park, where play begins on Friday.

Seaming conditions play to the strength of both teams, the gloveman said.

"Their bowlers are really good bowlers and conditions like these can suit them," he said.

"They would have learned from that first Test and will adjust their lengths accordingly."

The Black Caps batsmen are also looking to step up after an average first innings performance in the South Island.

They capitulated for 200, with only opener Jeet Raval (55) surpassing 30 in his debut Test knock.

If Amir doesn't perform in this test then he's got to be dropped. He's been absolutely rubbish, the best he can do is hold up an end, which isn't required

Rahat out Wahab in

Fully expect Rizwan to make his debut tomorrow.

Expect Pakistan to get destroyed by Henry.

I think Sharjeel will make a debut, as Mickey rates him more than Rizwan. Let's see what happens.
There not going to shuffle the whole batting order for a guy who will only last three overs.

Mickey does say Sharjeel needs to improve his defence and on a wicket were the ball is going to move a hefty bit, your defence is what you fall back on and considering Sharjeel's non-existent defence I doubt he'll play tomorrow.

Super green pitch. Pakistan's scorecard will read much worse than the 1st Test.

Another green mamba awaits us for the sake of contest I hope we win toss and bowl well can't see Yasir getting anything here Shatjeel can give us a quick 40 here otherwise we'll motor at 40/3 in 25overs

No Misbah = no chance

Azhar is a very negative batsman and captain

I'd play Sharjeel at 3
Keep Azhar/Sami opening as that is what should be happening long-term
But Azhar now he is captain will try and move back to 3

Sharjeel is an awful choice by the way
Not sure how he got selected

Pakistan always manages to surprise when they are down, best of luck hopefully not a washout.

Weather situation getting worse....

Raining atm

Pakistan have gone unbeaten in 7 Test series only three times in their history.

Under Imran between 1985-1989, under Misbah after the 2010 spot-fixing scandal until 2012, and our current streak since Aug 2014.

I guess this tour was maybe one step too far. I'm still proud of what we've done, what happened in Christchurch doesn't take away from what's been a terrific two years, and I just hope we've got one last push in us in Hamilton so we can squeeze out a drawn series. Losing 2-0 to NZ would be a bitter blow.

I'm not confident heading into tonight, I hope we don't go from one extreme of ultra-defensiveness to reckless aggression. The batting collapsed alarmingly and a lot depends on Azhar, Babar, Younis and Shafiq to step up in Misbah's absence.

Cornered tigers will blow away opposition.

Kiwiwash coming for Pakistan folks. 1st time in history, Pak will be blanked by kiwiland.

The Christchurch Test was decided in just over two-and-a-half days worth of play and the portents are for another result.

"I think it'll swing around a little bit more than it did in Christchurch. I am sure the swing bowlers from both teams will look forward to that, said batsman Ross Taylor, although he noted the pitch was a lighter green.

Against Sri Lanka last year the Hamilton pitch also had a bit of bounce and carry.

Boult was a big loss but Taylor said his likely replacement, Matt Henry, was probably the pick of the quick bowlers on the recent tour of India.

"Our pace attack is world class in these conditions and hopefully we can extract whatever swing and bounce and seam that this wicket produces."

He also said the Kiwi batsmen were now more keen to take on moving wickets.

"A few years ago no guys would want to go and bat in a green net where now there's a green net here in Hamilton and all the boys want to go and bat in that net.

"To test yourselves out it's no use going out and batting on a flat wicket when you know it's going to move a little bit out there on day one and two."
