Neymar - big 3 with Ronaldo and Messi?

Neymar to Barcelona: Inside story of PSG striker's summer transfer saga

After months of talk, bluster, posturing, claim and counter-claim we have - for the time being - reached the end of the road. Neymar will be staying at Paris St-Germain.

As the dust settles it is worth noting that the person least surprised by this is the PSG forward himself who, despite pushing for a move for months, feared from day one this summer that this was a deal always destined to fail.

The minimum requirement for the successful outcome of any sales transaction - be it for a yard of elastic or a billionaire footballer with talent to burn - is either a willing buyer or an enthusiastic seller, or preferably both.

On this occasion, however, Barcelona felt the French champions never wanted to sell and PSG always thought the Spanish giants never wanted to buy.

This was the mutual mistrust that underscored the negotiations from the start. Even by the convoluted, conspiratorial and brain-achingly complex minefield that is football transfer negotiations, this was always going to be a uniquely unwieldy deal to bring to a conclusion.

So, how did we get here?

In April, the 27-year-old Brazilian - who moved to France from Barcelona for a world record £200m in August 2017 - started talks to renew his PSG contract.

Unfortunately, there were a number of small "issues" making him unhappy: promises PSG were not fulfilling, boos from some of the fans, a spat with fellow forward Edinson Cavani as to who should take penalties, internal divisions within the camp, a sense the Ultra fans were keener on Cavani than him; and the feeling he was not being given sufficient protection by referees.

In January, three fouls in quick succession by Strasbourg's Anthony Goncalves - all of which merited a yellow card, none of which received one - left Neymar with the foot injury that kept him out for 18 games. He was not impressed.

Despite boasting one of the world's strongest squads, some players exist in a gilded cage at PSG, and a lack of competition in a weak French Ligue 1 created a bickering, febrile atmosphere within the camp.

Neymar loves Paris - who wouldn't? - and was negotiating a new contract despite his misgivings and despite flirting for a while with a return to the Nou Camp. But then something happened soon after Barcelona lost to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals in May.

The captains of Barcelona - Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto and Luis Suarez - had been told by president Josep Maria Bartomeu that not only would the club try to get Neymar, but also that he was confident the player would come back.

Neymar was told by players he communicates with regularly (Messi, Pique and Suarez) that the deal would happen and that he was needed if Barcelona were to regain the Champions League. It got under the Brazilian's skin, not least because he was never totally convinced by his decision to leave the Nou Camp in the first place.

Messi, 32, also suggested - given his own age - Neymar could probably become the centre of the Barcelona universe in a couple of years.

And so it began.

At this point, senior Barcelona players were told the club had not signed forward Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid - but their La Liga rivals had publicly said they had seen documents confirming the deal was agreed back in March.

The problem was that everyone in Neymar's camp thought Barcelona didn't have the money - especially if, as they suspected, Griezmann was a done deal.

Barca had to take out a six-month unsecured loan for 35m euros (£31.6m) from banks to bring in the France international, so one can only imagine the financial ramifications the purchase of Neymar would have had for the club.

Meanwhile, PSG sporting director Leonardo, who returned to the club in June, muddied the waters with dismissive comments about the Brazilian in front of everyone else, to the point where Neymar stopped talking to him.

Leonardo realised too late he had crossed the line and backtracked by singing the player's praises and starting the strategy of confusion he has used over the past four months.

From the start, Barcelona felt the PSG official was saying one thing to them and the player while simultaneously following instructions from the French club's owners that Neymar should not be allowed to leave under any circumstances.

With no written offer from Barcelona forthcoming, it dawned on Neymar that the move was perhaps not going to happen, so he met club officials a few days before the first game of the season and agreed to play. The day before the match, Leonardo asked him to issue a statement that he no longer wanted to leave. Neymar baulked at the idea, telling PSG that he was ready to play but wasn't about to start making public statements.

That is not surprising. Messages were seeping out of Barcelona from his former team-mates telling him to hang on in there because it was going to happen.

In fact, Barcelona wanted to demonstrate to everyone just how committed they were to doing the deal. The Catalan club insist the leaking of details of a trip to Paris of their decision makers (but not Bartomeu) eight days ago was not of their doing - but it did not damage them because it showed them trying hard.

The bottom line was this: if Barcelona wanted Neymar it was going to cost them 215m euros (£194m). The Spanish club told PSG that players would have to be included.

Eventually, on 27 August, Barcelona submitted the only written offer they ever made - 115m euros (£107m) in cash, 15m euros (£13.5m) in bonuses and three players.

PSG decided they had to be defender Jean-Clair Todibo, midfielder Ivan Rakitic (and both reluctantly agreed to move), plus forward Ousmane Dembele on loan, although the latter swiftly said: "Non merci."

France international Dembele was never going to move. At one point, intermediaries thought they might be able to change his mind, and the player spoke to PSG boss Thomas Tuchel on four occasions, but the French club never really forced the issue with the 22-year-old or attempted to discuss terms - which again suggested to Barcelona that they weren't that interested in doing the deal.

Nonetheless, talks continued. PSG began to um and ah about the make-up of the 15m euros in add-ons - but then, when that was agreed, they said they wanted 150m euros (£135m) up front rather than 130m euros plus bonuses.

Neymar's reaction in a letter to the club was: no problem. The Brazilian was willing to cover the shortfall in five payments of 4m euros. However, a few minutes after his message arrived, PSG told him the French Football Federation did not allow players to make such payments.

In the meantime, Real Madrid - who in the end said they weren't really that interested - had stuck their heads above the parapet and made an offer of £100m euros plus Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Keylor Navas. A look at Bale's salary was enough to put an end to that idea, and the Wales forward was not going to move anyway. In truth, PSG always felt Real wanted to get Neymar on the cheap while getting rid of some of their own squad, and also give their fans that feeling of schadenfreude that comes when you get one over one of your main rivals.

Italian champions Juventus also entered the fray, offering 100m euros and forward Paulo Dybala - a bid that was also rejected by PSG.

No Premier League club made an approach, although Manchester United had asked about the player when he was at Barcelona with a buyout clause of 190m euros (£172m). Neymar decided against the move.

In the end, "Spain" was the answer Neymar gave when asked where he wanted to go, suggesting he wouldn't have minded going to either of the La Liga giants. He wisely chose not to say Barcelona or nowhere, for the obvious reason that if the deal went wrong - as indeed it eventually did - he would end up looking silly.

Did Barcelona want Neymar enough? It is worth noting that when they needed to convince Frenkie de Jong to sign from Ajax, the Netherlands midfielder was visited by Bartomeu to complete the deal. At no point during the Neymar negotiations did Bartomeu meet PSG counterpart Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the player or his father. Furthermore, one of the original proposals from Barcelona (not in written form) was Philippe Coutinho plus a cash figure, which was immediately rejected by PSG for being "laughable".

It felt like Barca were not putting all of their weight into the transfer.

In many ways it was a win-win situation for Bartomeu. It didn't happen, so he can now shrug his shoulders and say "look, we tried", plus those who did not want the return of a player who has taken the club to court on two occasions are kept happy.

Had it happened, despite the crippling financial burden for a club already estimated to be 600m euros (£543m) in debt, Barcelona thought they might have found a way around it. If they really wanted Neymar to return that is.

As well as needing to do a lot of financial engineering to make it happen - including getting rid of two of their biggest earners - the wage structure at the Nou Camp would have been a potential headache, because Barcelona are at the very limit. No-one knew for sure whether La Liga would have sanctioned Neymar's signing, given the limits of financial fair play regulations.

Negotiations were always going to be complicated by there being no buyout clauses in France. Interestingly, though, next year Neymar will have been at PSG for three seasons and, according to Fifa regulations, can buy himself out of his contract after a fee is decided by a tribunal.

If things don't go well for Neymar, that could well be the next step. However, it's not all doom and gloom because he does a least enjoy a productive and respectful relationship with PSG boss Tuchel, and that will resume now everything has been settled.

How the various Barcelona players involved now react remains to be seen.

Will Dembele be cast as the scapegoat for refusing to facilitate the move? How will those effectively told by the club they were no longer required feel about staying? How will the players who thought Neymar would be alongside them to strengthen them feel about his non-arrival? Will Barcelona return at a later date - this time with all seriousness - for the Brazilian?

Time will tell.

Barcelona will not make a move for Paris St-Germain forward Neymar in January, says the Spanish champions' president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The La Liga giants spent all summer trying to negotiate a deal to re-sign the Brazilian, who moved to France for a world record £200m in 2017.

However, the two clubs were ultimately unable to agree a deal.

Asked whether it was possible for Barca to sign Neymar in January, Bartomeu said:"No. Right now, no."

Inside story of Neymar's summer transfer saga
Neymar became the world's most expensive player in 2017 when PSG paid him 222m euros so he could buy himself out of his contract at Barcelona.

The striker has scored 34 league goals in two seasons for the French champions, although injuries interrupted both of those campaigns.

Bartomeu dismissed the suggestion Neymar was the club's main target in the summer, adding that the possibility to sign him was a bonus.

Speaking to his club's official TV channel, he added: "Barca had already planned their squad.

"The opportunity to sign Neymar was one that came up in the market. His signing was an extra, it wasn't planned."

Police in Brazil have charged a woman who accused the international footballer, Neymar, of raping her in a Paris hotel in May with perverting the course of justice.

Najila Trindade and her former husband, Estivens Alves, have been accused of lying to police and attempting to blackmail the player.

The Paris St-Germain player has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Ms Trindade's lawyer said the indictment had taken him by surprise.

Cosme Araújo rejected the police accusations and said his client had never colluded with Mr Alves to extort money from the Brazilian football star.

'Consensual sex'
The case dominated newspaper headlines in Brazil and abroad for several weeks.

It first came to light in June, when the Paris St-Germain star released a seven minute video on Instagram revealing that he had been accused of rape.

He also published Whatsapp messages and images that he claimed to be of the woman.

In the video he says he had to make them public to "prove that nothing really happened".

He said they met online. He paid for her trip to France and they had consensual sex before Ms Trindade returned to Brazil and went to a police station to accuse him of attacking her.

Ms Trindade then went public, giving a television interview and releasing footage and a video clip purportedly showing an altercation between the two.

Police later filed a defamation suit against Ms Trindade, who allegedly insinuated the force was corrupt, according to news agency AFP.

Neymar denied the allegations from the beginning and said he was being extorted.

Police closed the case at the end of July.

The São Paulo attorney general's office said the case was suspended due to a lack of evidence.

Neymar is overrated.

He loses the ball far too often whilst doing tricks etc.

Easily the best player in the world excluding Messi and Ronaldo. The only problem is his fitness. The likes of Mbappe and Salah are still “kids” compared him.

If he stays fit, he can fire Paris to Champions League glory this season.

Neymar: Lionel Messi would have 'loved' Barcelona to re-sign Brazil forward

Lionel Messi says he would have "loved" for Neymar to return to Barcelona as his arrival would have "increased our chances of achieving our objectives."

Neymar, 27, joined Paris St-Germain from Barcelona in 2017 for a world record fee of 222m euros (£200m).

"He was desperate to come back," Messi told Spanish newspaper Sport. "I don't know if the club really tried or not."

Neymar scored 105 goals in 186 games for the Catalan club between 2013-2017, and has 51 goals in 58 games for PSG.

The Brazil international was repeatedly linked with a return to Barcelona during the transfer window, although it has been suggested that neither club was convinced that the other was committed to making a deal.

"I would have loved to have Neymar back," said Barcelona captain Messi, 32. "I understand those people who are against his return and it's understandable for what happened with 'Ney' and the way that he left.

"But thinking about it on a sporting level, I personally think Neymar is one of the best players in the world and having him in our squad would increase our chances of achieving our objectives."

Messi denied the Barcelona players asked the club to sign Neymar, adding: "We gave our opinions of whether it'd be good if he came or not but we never said they had to sign him."

Despite missing out on playing alongside the Brazilian again, Messi said he was "not disappointed", adding Barcelona have a "spectacular squad and can achieve everything without him."

The Argentine forward joined Barcelona in 2001 and his current contract expires in June 2021.

"My idea is to stay here for as long as I'm capable of playing at the required level and my body allows it," he added.

"This is my home. I don't plan on moving to anywhere else as long as we keep competing and winning."

Neymar was booed by his own fans throughout his Paris St-Germain return against Strasbourg - then scored an injury-time overhead-kick winner.

The Brazil forward missed the opening five games as he tried and failed to seal a move back to Barcelona.

"It is not the first time I have been booed by everyone," said the 27-year-old.

"It is sad but I know that, from now on, every game I play will be an away game."

PSG ultras booed Neymar when his name was read out before the game, when he touched the ball, when he took a corner and when he shot wide.

There was a mix of cheers and boos after he scored the late winner.

Neymar added: "I made it clear I have nothing against the fans, nothing against Paris St-Germain as a club.

"Everyone knows I wanted to leave. I am not going to get into the details of what happened.

"It is time to turn the page. Today I am a Paris St-Germain player and I am going to give everything on the field."

Neymar's goal - earning his side a 1-0 victory - was a sensational acrobatic volley from Abdou Diallo's cross which went in off the post.

Neymar had the ball in the net for the second time moments later but it was disallowed by the video assistant referee for offside.

There were also chants and banners using vulgar language about Neymar, including a reference to the 20m euros he had reportedly said he would pay in order to join Barcelona.

The forward wanted to move back to Catalonia in the summer, but Barcelona were unable to reach an agreement with PSG.

He missed the Trophee des Champions and opening four Ligue 1 games, only returning after the close of the transfer window.

Inside story of Neymar transfer saga
There were also PSG debuts for goalkeeper Keylor Navas and striker Mauro Icardi, on loan from Real Madrid and Inter Milan respectively, while former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera made his Ligue 1 bow in the second half.

Neymar will be unavailable for PSG's next game - Wednesday's Champions League home match with Real Madrid - because of a three-match European suspension.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar's three-game European ban for insulting match officials has been cut to two by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 27-year-old was charged by Uefa after PSG's Champions League exit at home to Manchester United on 6 March.

Neymar called the award of a decisive 94th-minute United penalty in the last-16 second leg-tie "a disgrace".

He will miss the games against Real Madrid and Galatasaray but can return to face Club Bruges on 22 October.

PSG took the case to Cas after Uefa rejected their appeal against the ban.

Cas says it will publish the reasons behind their ruling in a few weeks.

Neymar was injured with a broken metatarsal and missed both legs of the tie against United.

Referee Damir Skomina reviewed footage of a Diogo Dalot shot striking the hand of PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe before awarding the visitors the injury-time spot kick having initially given a corner.

Marcus Rashford's penalty ensured a 3-1 win in Paris for United, who went through to the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate.

Neymar wrote on social media: "It's a disgrace. Four guys who know nothing about football watch a slow-motion replay in front of the television.

"What can he do with his hand while his back is turned?"

Barcelona "did everything possible" to try and sign Neymar this summer but think his club Paris Saint-Germain "never wanted to sell him," according to the Catalan side's chief executive.

The Brazil international was repeatedly linked with a return to Barcelona during the transfer window.

The 27-year-old joined Paris St-Germain from Barcelona in 2017 for a world record fee of 222m euros (£200m).

"We made a very big effort to get Neymar," said CEO Oscar Grau.

"We did everything possible. We made two offers, one including players and one without them but we got the feeling PSG never wanted to sell him.

"We are not going to lose control when it comes to players. We want the best team around but we also want to be sustainable."

Neymar missed PSG's first five games of the season as he attempted to seal his move back to Barcelona before returning to the side for last weekend's Ligue 1 match at home to Strasbourg.

The 27-year-old was booed by his own fans throughout the game before scoring an injury-time overhead-kick winner.

He said afterwards that the crowd's reaction means "every game I play will be an away game".

Barca predict record revenue
Meanwhile, Barcelona say they will become the first sports club to generate revenue exceeding 1bn euros (£884m) this season.

The Spanish giants revealed revenues of 990m euros last season and project an increase to 1.047bn euros for the 2019/20 campaign.

A Barca statement said: "This figure represents a new record in the world of sport, and means the surpassing of internal forecasts, since the strategic plan approved by the board of directors expected profits to reach the figure of 1bn euros in 2021."

Spain - Lawyers for Brazilian footballer Neymar and Spanish champions Barcelona failed Friday in their bid to avert a multi-million-dollar court battle over a tangled contact dispute.

"It is going to court," Barcelona lawyer Josep Vives told journalists outside the court after the closed-door reconciliation talks had collapsed.

A court official told journalists that the hearing which is open to the public would begin later on Friday.

The case revolves around a decision by Neymar, the world's most expensive footballer, to quit Barcelona in 2017 and join Paris Saint-Germain in a stunning coup for the French club.

The move angered the Spanish giants who filed a complaint for breach of contract against the 27-year-old superstar who had pledged loyalty to Barcelona by signing a new deal just one year earlier.

Neymar arrived in Barcelona Thursday ahead of the hearing which was set for 10:00 am (0800 GMT) Friday but lawyers confined later he was not at court.

Neymar's shock transfer to PSG for a world record €222 million ($250 million at the time) came less than a year after he signed a contract that would have kept him at the Spanish club until 2021.

As well as filing a lawsuit, Barcelona refused to pay him 26 million euros, which were part of his contract renewal bonus.

The young Brazilian quickly hit back with a lawsuit demanding payment of the bonus in full.

'The taxman watching'

Although the full sum of the bonus has never been clear, Neymar received an initial payout and was to have received the rest in instalments over the course of his new contract.

The Spanish club is demanding he return the part of the loyalty bonus already received as well as €8.5 million plus interest in compensation for breach of contract.

Neymar promptly filed a countersuit demanding payment of the €26 million with interest.

According to El Mundo daily, the case is being closely watched by the Spanish tax authorities who are keen to know whether Neymar, who was a tax resident in 2017, paid his dues on both the bonus and his transfer to PSG.

Back in March, Neymar's public relations agency, NR Sports, admitted the tax authorities had requested documents but insisted the player was not the subject of a new tax investigation in Spain.

The young striker has been beset by legal problems since his arrival in Europe in 2013 following his move to the Catalan club from Brazil's Santos.

Barca valued the transfer at €57.1 million but Spanish prosecutors believe the amount paid was at least €83.3 million, trigging a string of legal cases in both countries, some of which remain unresolved.

And since transferring to PSG, things have not been any easier.

In the last few months, the superstar who has a huge social media following, found himself facing a rape allegation, which was dropped in August, and an assault charge for hitting a fan after PSG's shock defeat in April's French Cup final.

SINGAPORE: Neymar became the youngest player to make 100 appearances for Brazil on Thursday but the Paris St Germain forward had to settle for a 1-1 draw as he failed to score in a friendly with Senegal in Singapore.

Roberto Firmino opened the scoring for the Copa America champions after eight minutes when he ran on to a pass from Gabriel Jesus and chipped the ball past goalkeeper Alfred Gomis from close range.

As the half progressed, the livelier Senegal became, driven on by their captain Cheikhou Kouyate.

Senegal levelled with a penalty by Famara Diedhiou on the stroke of halftime after Marquinhos brought down Sadio Mane.

Neymar, who was not in the side that won the Copa America in June, had a relatively quiet game but went close with a 67th minute free-kick.

He then teed up Richarlison whose shot from the edge of the box flashed wide.

Both sides had chances to get a winner but Senegal will rue missing an opportunity to beat the five-times world champions.

Africa’s highest ranked team matched a full-strength Brazil throughout, with Mane hitting the post with five minutes left.

Although he failed to get on the scoresheet, it was still a big day for the 27-year-old Neymar, who became one of seven Brazilians to reach 100 caps.

He has scored 61 goals for the Selecao, making him the third highest scorer in the history of his national team.

Neymar is one behind Ronaldo but needs 16 to catch Pele who only played 92 matches. He has also provided 41 assists.

He won an Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 but has experienced many disappointments for his national team, particularly at the World Cup.

In 2014, in Brazil, a back injury in the quarter-finals against Colombia prevented him from being on the field for the 7-1 semi-final thrashing from Germany.

He scored twice during the tournament in Russia four years later, but Brazil were dumped out at the quarter-final stage by Belgium.

The draw stretched Brazil’s run without a win to three games, the longest since coach Tite took over in 2016. Tite acknowledged that his team’s performance was below par against Senegal.

After lifting the Copa America title in July, Brazil have drawn 2-2 with Colombia and lost 1-0 to Peru. They will have a chance to end the winless streak on Sunday in a friendly against Nigeria, also in Singapore.

Barcelona's players offered to accept delays to their pay if it would help the club re-sign forward Neymar in the summer, says defender Gerard Pique.

Barcelona did "everything possible" to sign the Brazil international but a move did not materialise.

Neymar left Barcelona for Paris St-Germain for a world record fee of 222m euros (£200m) in 2017.

Pique said players told the club they would accept delays to pay to help the club meet Financial Fair Play rules.

"We were ready to adjust our contracts," Pique told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

"We weren't going to contribute money, but we were going to make things easier by allowing some payments to be made in the second or third year instead of the first."

Barcelona spent more than £200m in the summer, including deals for midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Ajax and Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.

Financial Fair Play rules, which prevent clubs from spending beyond their means, were understood to be one of the issues Barcelona would have had to have overcome to sign forward Neymar.

Neymar celebrated his upcoming 28th birthday with a lavish party at Parisian nightclub Yoyo on Sunday.

Paris St-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel skipped the white-themed party under the Palais de Tokyo, after branding it "a distraction", with the event coming just two days before their next game.

It appeared to be a sentiment not shared by the Brazilian's team-mates and celebrity pals however, with Edinson Cavani, Marco Verratti and Angel di Maria embracing the dress code and injured Lyon winger Memphis Depay sporting a pair of gem-encrusted wellies.

Serial party host Neymar is well known for his extravagant get-togethers, but it was reported that Neymar would rein in his celebrations this year before his actual birthday on Wednesday.

He threw a 'Nuit Rouge' themed event for his 27th birthday for around 200 guests, while he welcomed in his 26th birthday with a black tie event attended by Lewis Hamilton and the president of Brazil.

Sunday's bash came a day after PSG's bad-tempered 5-0 victory against Montpellier, that was notable for incidents involving a pink-haired Neymar and team-mate Kylian Mbappe.

Neymar shrugged off an injury scare, taunted the opposition with his signature tricks and raged at the officials.

Mbappe, 21, reacted angrily to being substituted midway through the second half.

"These are distractions, and they give the impression we are not serious, not professional," said Tuchel, in his post-match comments when discussing Neymar's party.

But on Tuesday, he denied he had a personal issue with Neymar.

"It's my choice not to participate in the party," Tuchel said. "It's a choice as a coach; it's not against Neymar personally."

Mbappe appeared to skip the party all together, instead opting to watch the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl after attending an event at Disneyland Paris.

Maybe he couldn't find anything white to wear...

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar must pay 6.7m euros (£6.1m) to former club Barcelona, a Spanish court has ruled.

The Brazil international claimed he was owed 43.6m euros in loyalty bonuses by Barcelona, who he left in August 2017.

A judge ruled in favour of the La Liga side but 28-year-old Neymar, who filed the lawsuit shortly after the transfer, can appeal against the decision.

Barcelona said they "welcomed" the judgement and would "continue to firmly defend its legitimate interests".

The Brazil forward also made a complaint to world governing body Fifa after Barca refused to pay him following his 222m euros (£200m) move in 2017.

As well as not paying Neymar, Barcelona started legal proceedings against him to pay back £8m he received when he signed a new deal with them in 2016.

Fifa did not take any action, saying it would leave the case to the courts.

It is "unfeasible" for Barcelona to re-sign Neymar from Paris St-Germain in the current economic climate, says the club's president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

A move for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has also been affected.

Bartomeu told Spanish newspaper Sport that Barca generated 200m Euros less than expected between March and June because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"All the big European clubs are affected," he said. "This isn't going to last a year, but three or four."

Brazilian forward Neymar joined PSG for a world record 222m Euros (£199m) in August 2017 but Barcelona tried to re-sign the player last summer.

"Neymar? In this situation, it's unfeasible," said Bartomeu. "Nor does PSG want to sell him.

"Barca have spoken with Inter about Lautaro, but the talks have stopped. The situation doesn't invite large investments."

Bartomeu went on to explain that Barcelona lost 200m euros between March and June. He added: "In the 2020-21 season we expected to post 1.1 bn euros, but we'll have 30% of that.

"If the situation of the pandemic doesn't improve, there will be no spectators, no museum, no stores open, and money will continue to be lost.

"It forces us to be very rigorous in management: we must review which investments are essential and which can wait."

Bartomeu also confirmed the club opened up disciplinary proceedings against midfielder Arthur, who is joining Juventus as part of a swap deal with Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic, after he failed to return to the club from holiday.

"We reached the agreement that until the Champions League ended, he would continue playing for Barca. He could help us," said Bartomeu, who has been Barca president since 2014.

"But he didn't return from his mini-break so we have opened a file on him."

Not overrated at all, incredible pedigree. It is a shame, Bartomeu has so mismanaged Barca's funds, £450m spent on Coutinho(no role at barca), Griezmann (no role at barca) and Dembele (injuries) was a complete waste.

Saying that, the above 3 are commodities and should be used as trade bait.

Barca need Neymar back ànd need an overhaul and the below is very realistic, although Havertz will probably join Chelsea and Pjanic should not have been signed due to age!

Neymar misses golden opportunity but Paris Saint-Germain well placed for future Champions League glory

Neymar breezed into the Estadio da Luz wearing a smile on his face and carrying a speaker in his hand, even stopping to dance for the cameras on his way towards the Paris Saint-Germain dressing room.

He looked entirely at ease with the magnitude of what was to come. This was not his first Champions League final, after all. By the end of it, though, his demeanour could hardly have been more different. He sat crying on the bench as Bayern Munich celebrated their triumph in front of him.

It was supposed to be his big night. His opportunity, three years on from his £198m move from Barcelona, to finally step out of Lionel Messi's shadow and lead PSG to Champions League glory for the first time in their history. It is precisely what he was brought there to do.

Such an outcome would have silenced his many critics. Those who feel PSG overpaid for him. Those who feel he offers style but not enough substance. But it is not how the night transpired. PSG pushed Bayern close but they could find no answer to Kingsley Coman's goal. They needed a moment of inspiration but Neymar could not provide it.

Reaching the Champions League final is an achievement in itself, of course. Neymar was instrumental in the victories that took PSG past Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta and RB Leipzig on their way there. But history rarely remembers the runners-up and Neymar's tears showed he knows it.

PSG have dominated domestically since Neymar's arrival in France, winning three consecutive Ligue 1 titles and a lot more besides. But any player who wants to be considered the world's best will always be judged by his performances on the European stage and the Champions League has been a persistent source of disappointment for him since 2017.

In his first season, Neymar was part of the side beaten 3-1 in the first leg of their last-16 meeting with Real Madrid, only to then miss the second leg with an injury. The following year, he was absent again as PSG were knocked out by Manchester United at the same juncture of the competition.

It seemed at that point that Neymar's time in Paris was coming to an end, with Barcelona eager to take him back to Catalonia. But after months of speculation he resolved to stay. Thomas Tuchel even managed to make him work harder for the team. At 28, Neymar was finally maturing.

That maturity could be seen in the way he chased down red-shirted defenders on Sunday night, covering more ground than any of his team-mates with the exception of Marquinhos. Neymar's mentality has changed. He is now at the peak of his powers. But it was not enough in Lisbon and that is why the pain of the defeat is so acute for him.

There is no escaping that it is a missed opportunity and Neymar will also be aware that it might have been a different story had he buried the chance he fired into the legs of Manuel Neuer early in the first half.

"We talked about it before, that the first goal would decide the match," lamented Tuchel afterwards. "It's a pity we couldn't do it because it would've been a big obstacle and a challenge for them to turn it around."

It was certainly a pivotal moment. Bayern, emboldened by Neuer's heroics, recovered their poise soon afterwards and began to dominate. And while there were flickers of Neymar's class in the remainder of the game, that first-half chance was about as good as it got for him overall.

In fact, in the closing stages, his new-found maturity made way for petulance and frustration. It is understandable that the heavy tackles should rile him, of course. Few players attract more fouls. But the problem was how it affected his game. Late on, at a time when PSG needed quality and composure, Neymar could only offer sloppy touches and missed passes.

What happens next is not entirely clear. Neymar has two years to run on his contract at the Parc des Princes. His agent, Wagner Ribeiro, recently stated that the Brazilian is content to stay at the club for the duration of that contract. But there is always an element of uncertainty around his future and the defeat in Lisbon is sure to prompt speculation.

Neymar may feel his chances of achieving true greatness would be better elsewhere.

Barcelona would love to have him back in Catalonia and Real Madrid are in a rebuilding phase too. But the finances involved in a transfer would surely be too much for any club in the present climate. And besides, few clubs are better placed than PSG to go one step further than they managed in Lisbon in the years ahead.

In Tuchel, they have a manager who has succeeded where the others have failed. A manager who has united the dressing room and moulded a collection of stars into a team. Their starting line-up is as strong as any in world football and crucially, their Qatari backers have near limitless funds to strengthen any areas of weakness.

Psychologically, the run to the final should give them belief. Pep Guardiola knows just how difficult it is to turn a club with no history at Europe's top table into Champions League winners, but PSG have shown they are ahead of Manchester City in their development. They now know what they are capable of on this stage. The trophy could easily have been theirs on Sunday night. They were not overawed by the occasion.

Neymar would do well to bear that in mind. But what's most important is that if another opportunity like this one does arise, he grasps it with both hands. Only then will he cement his legacy as a true great. Only then will he succeed Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the world's best.

PSG has confirmed on Twitter three cases of Covid-19 in their squad. Although not confirmed by PSG the players are Ángel Di María, Leandro Paredes and Neymar, as reported by L'Equipe.

The French outfit have applied the applicable coronavirus safety protocol and the players are being placed in quarantine to avoid further infections.

Having been beaten 1-0 in the final of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, PSG asked the French League to postpone their second match day game also from Saturday 29 August at 21:00 to Thursday 10 October.

PSG said the reason for the postponement was to give their players time to rest after playing three games in 10 days in the Champions League, however, players, including Neymar, Di María and Paredes took the opportunity to extend their holidays in Ibiza, where they appear to have become infected with Covid-19.

Neymar moved second behind Pele in Brazil's all-time leading scorer list by scoring a hat-trick in their 2022 World Cup qualifying win over Peru.

The Paris St-Germain forward scored his 64th international goal when he tapped in late on to complete a 4-2 win.

Peru twice took the lead in Lima but Neymar scored two penalties to take his tally above Ronaldo, with Pele on 77.

Everton's Richarlison also scored, nudging a header from Liverpool's Roberto Firminio header over the line.

Neymar, 28, has scored his goals in 104 international appearances, while Pele played 92 times for his country.

Brazil and Argentina lead the group after winning both of their opening matches while Paraguay, who beat Venezuela 1-0 on Tuesday, are third.

The top four from the 10-team group qualify directly for Qatar with the fifth-placed side going into an inter-confederation play-off.

razilian star Neymar on Thursday was ruled out of his country’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Uruguay next week due to a groin injury that he had developed while playing for Paris-Saint-Germain in a Champions League game.

He had already been ruled out of Brazil’s first World Cup qualifier on Friday against Venezuela.

The news came as a blow because the officials of Brazil’s soccer confederation as well as the fans were expecting that the striker would recover for the second game. But on Thursday, the football body confirmed that Neymar would also miss Tuesday’s game against Uruguay in Montevideo.

“We were hopeful that he could play, that’s why we brought him to Brazil,” team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar told Reuters.

“He improved but not enough so that he’ll be ready for the game on Tuesday against Uruguay. The backroom staff decided to release Neymar Junior.”

It was unclear whether he would remain with the Brazil squad or return to Paris.

Earlier the Paris-Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel had expressed doubt that Neymar would be fit to play so soon, but reports suggest that the Brazil coach Tite insisted that the striker travel to the country.

Brazil has already lost five players for the two matches, including injured midfielders Philippe Coutinho and Fabinho, and defender Rodrigo Caio.

Defenders Eder Milito and Gabriel Menino were ruled out after contracting COVID-19.

Pedro was selected for Brazil in September 2018, but was unable to make his debut after sustaining a series knee injury.

Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star Neymar has claimed that his former club Barcelona owe him €44m according to Marca. The relationship between the Catalans and Neymar has been fractious ever since he left for the French capital in the summer of 2017, but things are taking a rather dramatic turn more recently.

The forward’s lawyers presented an appeal against the sentence brought last June by a court in Barcelona that ordered the footballer to pay €6.7m to the club. Neymar wants the high court to order Barca to pay €43,650,000 euros that the club reneged on as a renewal bonus when the Brazilian unilaterally left the club upon PSG’s payment of his release clause. Barcelona only paid him until he left.

Now, the matter is for the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia to decide. “The club completely dismisses the player’s claim, which claimed the payment of €43.6m and estimates a large part of the claim presented by Barca, by virtue of which the player has to return €6.7m to the club,” the club said last June.

All this litigation and trouble has its origin in the payment of a €26m, agreed by club and player, when Neymar renewed his contract until 2021, but was blocked by Barcelona when the player left for PSG in the summer of 2017.

Neymar, widely considered to be one of the world’s best footballers, joined Barcelona from his hometown club Santos in 2013. He spent four seasons in Catalonia, forming a pivotal part of the lethal MSN strike-force alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez and winning two LaLiga titles, three Copa del Reys, the Spanish Super Cup, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar is set to return in January from an ankle injury suffered against Lyon on 13 December.

Neymar was seen screaming in agony and clutching his ankle after a challenge from Thiago Mendes, who was sent off.

The Brazil international, 28, was then carried off on a stretcher.

"There is some bruising to the bone and he continues to undergo treatment. He is expected to make his return in January," said a PSG statement.

PSG head coach Thomas Tuchel had suggested at the start of the week that Neymar had a chance of facing Lille this Sunday.

The club statement suggests the forward will be fully fit to face former club Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League in February.

Neymar joined PSG for a world record fee of 222m euros (£200m) from Barcelona in August 2017.

He has helped the club win three successive Ligue 1 titles as well as reach last season's Champions League final, where they lost to Bayern Munich.

Neymar signs new Paris St-Germain contract

Neymar has signed a contract extension with Paris St-Germain, keeping the Brazil forward at the French giants until 30 June, 2025.

The 29-year-old said "happiness" was the main factor in signing a new deal.

Neymar, who joined PSG in a world-record £200m deal in 2017, had been linked with a move away, including a return to Barcelona.

"I have grown as a person here, as a human being and as a player, too," he told the PSG website.

Neymar was in the final year of his contract, having signed a five-year deal on his initial arrival.

He has scored 85 goals and registered 51 assists in 112 games for PSG.

However, he has had a difficult relationship with the club's fans at times and was booed after expressing a desire to move back to Barcelona in 2019.

Neymar said he had undergone a "very positive evolution" in his time at PSG.

"I have learned a lot. Things have happened that should not have happened," he said.

"We had fights, a few sad times, but I am happy and proud to be part of the history of Paris St-Germain.

"I hope to put many more trophies on the shelf for PSG."

PSG, who are chasing a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title, are four points behind leaders Lille with a game in hand.

US sportswear giant Nike says it stopped working with Brazilian footballer Neymar because he "refused to co-operate in a good faith investigation" into an allegation of sexual assault against an employee.

The alleged incident happened in 2016 and was reported to Nike in 2018.

Nike said its investigation was inconclusive.

A spokeswoman for Neymar said he denied the sexual assault and split with Nike last year for commercial reasons.

"Neymar Jr will vigorously defend himself against these baseless attacks in case any claim is presented, which did not happen so far," she told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper, which first reported the news.

Nike parted ways with Neymar in August 2020, ending one of its most high-profile sponsorship deals. The company gave no reason for the split at the time.

In its statement on Thursday, it said: "It would be inappropriate for Nike to make an accusatory statement without being able to provide supporting facts."

But it added: "Nike ended its relationship with the athlete because he refused to co-operate in a good faith investigation of credible allegations of wrongdoing by an employee."

Nike said the employee reported the allegations in 2018 but initially wanted to avoid an investigation and keep it confidential. It said it commissioned an independent investigation into the matter the following year, when she expressed an interest in pursuing it.

The alleged victim has not been named, with Nike saying: "We continue to respect the confidentiality of the employee and also recognise that this has been a long and difficult experience for her."

Neymar currently plays for French side Paris Saint-Germain.

He previously denied accusations of rape in 2019, in a case that was eventually dropped.

Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar have settled a number of long-running legal disputes out of court, the Catalan club have confirmed.

Barca did not specify the details of the agreement, nor did they reveal which issues had remained unsettled prior to Monday's agreement.

Neymar's €222 million move to PSG in 2017 had led to several court cases between the two parties, with Neymar demanding Barca pay him an unpaid renewal bonus and the club responding by suing him for breach of contract.

"Barcelona have ended out of court in amicable fashion the various labour and civil litigation cases that were open with the Brazilian player Neymar," the Blaugrana said in a statement on Monday.

"As such, a transactional agreement between the club and the player has been signed to end the legal cases that were pending between the two parties."

Neymar moved to Barcelona from Brazilian side Santos in 2013 and his time at the club -- and the years since his departure -- have been littered by off-field problems.

Former president Sandro Rosell resigned in 2014 when a Spanish judge agreed to hear a lawsuit alleging the real cost of the deal had been hidden in false contracts.

Barca initially said Neymar had cost them €57 million but it was later revealed the real price was closer to €80m. A company owned by Neymar's father had received a large percentage of the final fee.

The club were eventually charged with tax fraud and paid a voluntary €13.6m to close the case in an attempt to save the club's image.

As a result, DIS Esporte, who earned 40% of Neymar's economic rights when he was a Santos player, also filed a lawsuit as they believed they had not been paid what they were due from the deal. Criminal cases were never brought against the club.

Neymar's move to PSG in 2017 then opened several legal issues between the player and Barca.

Last July, he was ordered to pay Barcelona €6.7m following a dispute based around a €43m renewal bonus included in the last contract he signed with the club in 2016.

He received around €14m of the bonus before leaving Barca, who deposited the remaining amount with a notary once it became evident he was signing for PSG.

When he signed for PSG in a world record deal, he demanded Barca pay the rest of the bonus. Barca, represented by Costa-Torrecillas-McCragh, responded by suing him for breach of contract and requested the return of the €14m already paid to Neymar as well as €8.5m in damages plus interest.

A judge sided with Barca, with ESPN having access to the full ruling, which stated that Neymar was in breach of his contract as he terminated it prematurely without just cause "beyond his mere will" to sign for another club when PSG paid his release clause.

Neymar appealed the verdict but Barca now say all cases with their former player have been resolved.

Brazil forward Neymar believes the 2022 World Cup will be his last for his country, suggesting he could retire from playing internationally at the age of 30.

The 29-year-old has 113 caps for his country and he’s Brazil’s biggest chance of winning the World Cup in Qatar next December.

Neymar has tasted international success with his country in the past, winning the Copa America in 2019.

However, the World Cup remains the priority and the pressure is on the forward to deliver for the five-time winners.

But that pressure has taken its toll on Neymar, with the Brazilian suggesting the tournament will be his last for Brazil as he doesn’t have the ‘strength of mind’ to continue.

‘I think it’s [2022] my last World Cup,’ said Neymar.

‘I see as my last because I don’t know if I have the strength of mind to deal with football anymore.

‘I’ll do everything to turn up well, do everything to win with my country.

‘To realise my greatest dream since I was little, and I hope I can do it.’

Neymar has competed in two previous tournaments and he was sensational on home turf in 2014.

However, the forward’s injury in the quarter-finals prevented him from playing against Germany in the semi-finals and Brazil were infamously defeated 7-1.

Brazil were then defeated by Belgium at the quarter-final stage of the 2018 World Cup.

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar will be out for up to eight weeks after suffering ankle ligament damage, the French club have confirmed.

The 29-year-old Brazil international was carried off on a stretcher in the last few minutes of Sunday's 3-1 away victory at Saint-Etienne.

Neymar is set to miss seven PSG Ligue 1 matches and a Champions League tie.

"The examinations carried out confirm Neymar suffered a sprained left ankle with ligament damage," said PSG.

The club added that a further update would be made in 72 hours.

Domestically, PSG are 12 points clear of second-placed Rennes, while in the Champions League they are guaranteed to finish second in Group A and advance to the last 16.

PSG play Club Bruges at home on 7 December, before the tournament resumes in February.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, 31, is set to return to training this week after missing the game against Saint-Etienne with a knee injury.

However, he is expected to be absent for the home match against Nice on Wednesday.

<b>Neymar turns down shock Premier League transfer to renew £670,000 per week PSG contract</b>

Neymar’s £670,000-per-week contract with Paris Saint-Germain is set to be renewed next week after he turned down a move to Newcastle United, according to reports in France.

The Brazilian last agreed an upgraded deal with the French champions in 2021, committing him to the club until 2025. But L’Equipe reports an extension will be automatically triggered on 1 July which will add an extra year onto the agreement, before the same happens again on 1 July 2023.

There had been doubts about Neymar’s future, with rumours that PSG were willing to allow him to leave after a mediocre season for both club and player and Kylian Mbappé’s own surprise decision to sign a huge new deal rather than join Real Madrid.

Earlier this week, PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi refused to confirm that Neymar would stay beyond the current transfer window.

‘I expected all of the players to do more than last season,’ Al-Khelaifi said in a press conference. ‘Much more! The message is clear: working each day at 200%. To give everything we have for this shirt, to give it our all, and then we’ll see what the result is.

‘We have to become humble again. We have to change to avoid injuries, suspensions and fouls which can change games. We’ll stop saying that we want to win this, this and that. We’re building. We have to discipline ourselves, both on and off the pitch. […] Those who want to stay in their comfort zone will stay to one side.’

On Neymar’s future, the Qatari was non-commital.

‘Some will come and others will go, but these are private negotiations,’ he said when asked directly about Neymar by Marca.

The L’Équipe report adds that Newcastle United had shown interest in bringing Neymar to the Premier League, but that the former Santos forwards showed no interest in swapping the Qatari state’s sportswashing project with PSG for the Saudi Arabian state’s North east equivalent.

Neymar has scored 100 goals and provided 60 assists for PSG signing for around £200m from Barcelona in 2017, though only 22 of those appearances and 13 of his goals were scored in an injury plagued 2021/22 season.

Brazilian football star Neymar will go on trial in October in a corruption case stemming from his transfer from Santos to Barcelona.

He and the two clubs are accused of fraud and corruption charges over the 2013 move, with his family also embroiled in the case.

Brazilian investment group DIS, which used to own part of Neymar's transfer rights, alleges that it received less money than it was entitled to when the footballer joined Barcelona from Brazilian club Santos nine years ago.

DIS says it was due to get 40% of the fee, which at the time was reported to be in the region of £48.6m.

Subsequent investigations looked into whether any part of the reported transfer fee had been concealed.

The trial in Barcelona - which will include Neymar, his parents, former Santos manager Odilio Rodrigues, and Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, the then president and vice-president of Barcelona - is set to end just weeks before the start of this year's World Cup in Qatar.

All the defendants have denied any wrongdoing, but appeals by them to Spain's high court have been rejected, forcing the case to go to trial.

Neymar: Brazil forward faces call for five-year prison term over transfer to Barcelona

A Brazilian investment firm has called for Neymar to face a five-year prison sentence when he stands trial next week on fraud and corruption charges relating to his transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.

DIS, which owned 40% of the rights to the Brazil forward at the time, argues it lost out because the transfer fee was undervalued.

Neymar, 30, has denied the allegations but lost an appeal in Spain's High Court in 2017, leading to the trial being brought by Spanish prosecutors.

The Paris St-Germain player will have to appear in-person for the first day of the trail in Barcelona on Monday, the court said, but it is unclear if he will be asked to stay for the entire hearing that could last two weeks.

The other defendants are Neymar's parents, the two clubs, former Barcelona presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, and former Santos president Odilio Rodrigues.

Rosell has also previously denied any wrongdoing.

In a statement, Baker McKenzie, the lawyers representing the Neymar family, claimed that Spanish courts "lack jurisdiction to prosecute the Neymar family and their company N&N" because the acts were committed by Brazilian nationals outside Spanish territory.

They also point out that the alleged crimes are not punishable in Brazil.

DIS acquired a percentage of Neymar's rights when he was 17, in exchange for 2m euros.

Barcelona said at the time of Neymar's move that the transfer fee was 57.1m euros, of which 40m euros was paid to his family.

The investment firm received a 40% share of the remaining 17.1m euros that was paid to Brazilian club Santos.

"Neymar's rights have not been sold to the highest bidder," DIS lawyer Paulo Nasser told a news conference in Barcelona on Thursday. "There were clubs that offered up to 60m euros."

As well as the five-year jail term demand, DIS is also requesting prison sentences for Rosell and Bartomeu, and a 149m euros fine.

Spanish prosecutors want a two-year prison term for Neymar and the payment of a 10m euros fine and a five-year jail term for Rosell, plus an 8.4m euros fine for Barcelona.

Baker McKenzie's statement added that the Neymar family have been charged with "corruption between private individuals" which applies to "competition of products and services between companies" whereas Neymar "is not a service or a commodity".

Finally, the statement added that the transfer had not broken any Fifa rules.

Neymar has equalled Brazil legend Pele's 'official' goalscoring record of 77 for the men's national team with his goal against Croatia at the World Cup.

World governing body Fifa recognises the record, but the Brazilian Football Confederation and Pele will not because they say he scored 95 goals.

Fifa only counts games between two nations and some of Pele's goals came in friendlies against club sides.

Neymar has made 124 Brazil appearances, equalling Pele's tally from 92 games.

Pele - who won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970 - is currently receiving treatment in hospital in Sao Paulo.

Neymar's tally is not an overall Brazilian record, with Marta having scored 115 for the women's team since 2002.

He equalled the record at the end of the first period of extra time in Brazil's quarter-final against Croatia when he combined with West Ham's Lucas Paqueta, shrugged off Borna Sosa and fired into the roof of the net from four yards.

However, his side lost 4-2 on penalties, with Neymar not taking one as Brazil missed two of their four spot-kicks, after Bruno Petkovic equalised with Croatia's first shot on target in the 116th minute.

The 30-year-old made his debut on 10 August 2010, scoring his first international goal in the 28th minute of a 2-0 win over the USA.

Eight of his goals have come in World Cups - four in 2014, two in 2018 and two so far in this tournament in Qatar - with another five coming in the Copa America.

He won the Confederations Cup in 2013, but his best World Cup run came when Brazil reached the semi-finals in 2014, while his best Copa America campaign ended with a runner-up spot in 2021.

Speaking on BBC One, former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas said: "Finally, one of the best players in the world turns up.

"What a goal that is. He has one thing in his mind to drive through the heart of Croatia.

"The balance, the composure, the brilliance - it has not been there all night, but when it mattered he delivered."

Former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann called him a "difference-maker", while Alex Scott said Neymar "produced a moment of magic".

Neymar claims he and Lionel Messi ‘lived through hell’ at PSG

In an interview with Globo that aired on Sunday he spoke about the mixed feelings he had when his former PSG and Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi won the World Cup with Argentina last year.

“I was very happy for the year [Messi] had, but at the same time very sad, because he lived both sides of the coin,” said Neymar, who joined Al‑Hilal this summer, ending his six-year stay in France. “He went to heaven with the Argentina team, won everything in recent years, and with Paris he lived hell, we lived through hell, both he and I.”

Neymar and Messi came under fire from sections of the PSG fanbase after failing to win the Champions League with the club. Both players were booed towards the end of their time in Paris. “We get upset, because we’re not there for nothing, we’re there to do our best, [to] be champions, try to make history,” the Brazilian said.

“That’s why we started playing together again, we came together there so we could make history. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it.”

Neymar stretchered off pitch in tears with Brazil injury that could see him miss rest of Saudi season

Neymar was in tears as he left the pitch with a knee injury while on Brazil duty.

The forward was in action in the World Cup qualifying match with Uruguay on Tuesday until he tripped and fell just before half-time.

The incident came as he jostled for possession with Nicolas de la Cruz, with his knee appearing to buckle under him, leading to immediate concern.

Neymar was immediately surrounded by players from both teams as he screamed in agony and writhed around on the floor.

After a pause in play for treatment, the 31-year-old was stretchered off the pitch with his head in his hands, before using crutches as he left the stadium.

Speaking after the game, Rodrigo Lamar's doctor said: "We did all the tests and we will repeat them tomorrow.

While the extent of his injury remains to be seen, Neymar could face a long spell on the sidelines if he has suffered ligament damage, putting his place in next summer's Copa America in doubt.

Neymar shows off drastic new look after being deregistered by Al Hilal

As famous for his various haircuts as David Beckham, Neymar is now taking his turn with the bald look.

The Brazil superstar is currently rehabilitating back in his home country after he suffered a long-term anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing internationally in October.

Having already undergone one huge life change with the birth of his second child earlier that month, he’s now drastically reinvented himself by shaving his head to the shock of his 216million Instagram followers.

Formerly of Santos, Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain, Neymar remains the most expensive footballer of all-time from his £200m move to France in 2017.

He left PSG for Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal in the summer for a reported £86m, a record fee for the league.

However, the 31-year-old made only five appearances before tearing his ACL while playing for Brazil against Uruguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Neymar: Brazil forward responding 'very well' after ACL surgery

Neymar is responding "very well" after undergoing knee surgery but doctors do not know when the Al-Hilal forward will return to playing.

The 31-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee while playing for Brazil in a 2026 World Cup qualifier last month.

Recovery from an ACL rupture or tear can be eight to 10 months.

Rodrigo Lasmar, Brazil's team doctor, said Neymar is fully committed to regaining full fitness.

"He has demonstrated, from the first moment, that he is following what we are proposing," Lasmar told a news conference in Sao Paulo on Monday.

Neymar was taken off on a stretcher in tears during Brazil's 2-0 defeat by Uruguay after landing awkwardly following a challenge in the first half.

He moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in the summer from Paris St-Germain for 90m euros (£77.6m) plus add-ons but has only played five games because of muscle injuries.

Neymar and Bruna Biancardi Split 1 Month After Welcoming Baby

Soccer star Neymar and his girlfriend Bruna Biancardi are no longer together, she revealed on her Instagram Story this week.

"This is a private matter, but as I am exposed to news, assumptions and jokes every day, I inform you that I am not in a relationship," Bruna wrote. She penned her message in Portuguese and it has been translated to English via Google Translate.

Continued Bruna: "We are Mavie's parents, and that is the reason for our bond. I hope that this way I will stop relating to the frequent news. Thanks"

The split comes after she and Neymar welcomed baby Mavie last month.

Bruna and Neymar, who were first romantically linked in early 2022, shared some of Mavie's first moments in a joint Instagram post and wrote, via translation, "Welcome baby girl ! You are already very much loved by us.. thank you for choosing us ✨ May God bless you!"

In June, their relationship hit a snag after Neymar publicly apologized to Bruna for "his mistakes."

"I do this for both of you and your family," Neymar wrote on Instagram at the time, via translation. "Justify the unjustifiable. No need to. But I need you in OUR lives."

The Saudi Pro League player continued, "I saw how much you were exposed, how much you suffered with all of this and how much you want to be by my side. And I stand beside you. I did wrong with you all."

He also expressed his hope that their relationship can withstand this challenging period.

"I can't imagine myself without you," he wrote. "I don't know if we're going to work, but TODAY you're the certainty that I want to try. Our purpose will prevail, our love for our baby will win, our love for each other will make us stronger."

While it's unclear exactly what Neymar was apologizing for, the soccer player explained why he wanted to post something to his 216 million Instagram followers.

"Bru, I already apologized for my mistakes, for the unnecessary exposure, but I feel obligated to publicly reaffirm that," he shared. "If a private matter has become public, the apology must be made public."

Neymar returns to Al-Hilal training after injury layoff

Neymar took part in team training and will join the Al-Hilal squad for their Asian Champions League trip to UAE Pro League club Al-Ain after recovering from a serious knee injury, the Saudi Pro League club said.

The 32-year-old Brazil forward has not played since sustaining the injury during his nation's CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October last year.

He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and underwent surgery in November.

Having moved to Saudi Arabia from French champions Paris St Germain for a reported fee of around 90 million euros ($97.8 million) in August last year, Neymar had only played five games before his layoff as he was struggling with muscle injuries.

Neymar plays down injury concern in second game back

Neymar has played down concerns after picking up a fresh injury in his second appearance for Al-Hilal following a year out.

The 32-year-old Brazil striker was substituted 86 minutes into the Saudi Arabian club's 3-0 win against Iranian side Esteghlal in the Asian Champions League Elite on Monday.

"It felt like a cramp, only very strong. I'm going to have some tests and I hope it's nothing too serious,” the Brazilian said on Instagram.

"It's normal for this to happen after a year. The doctors had already warned me, so I have to be careful and play more minutes."

Neymar had a prolonged spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023.

He has played only seven matches for Al-Hilal since his move from Paris St-Germain in August 2023.

Neymar set for Santos after Al-Hilal deal terminated

Brazilian club Santos are in talks to re-sign Neymar after his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal was cancelled by mutual consent.

The 32-year-old Brazil international is expected to sign a short-term deal at the club where he began his career.

The termination of his contract at Al-Hilal was considered the biggest step, according to sources close to Neymar.

It ends an injury-hit spell in Saudi Arabia, where he played just seven times for the club he joined in a £77.6m deal in August 2023.

The attacker made two appearances this season, most recently a substitute in November.

Al Hilal said: "The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided at Al-Hilal, and wish the player success in his career."

Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire also attempted to bring Neymar to the United States but he turned them down in favour of returning to Santos.

Fire had Neymar on their 'discovery list', meaning they were the only MLS team able to negotiate with him in the US.

Inter Miami had also been linked with reuniting Neymar with his former Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Neymar remains the world's most expensive footballer after his £200m move to Paris St-Germain in 2017.

Neymar had around seven months remaining on his contract, having joined Al-Hilal on a two-year deal with a reported wage of 150m euros (£129.2m) a year.

He joined claiming he wanted to "write new sporting history" but had a prolonged spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023.

He returned in October last year and although he played down an apparent hamstring issue in his second match back, he has not featured since.

Neymar came through the famed youth system at Santos, where he scored 136 goals in 225 games, before a high-profile move to Barcelona in 2013.

He made 186 appearances across four seasons in Spain, winning two La Liga titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup before his world-record move to PSG as a 25-year-old.

In Paris he won five league titles prior to his move to Saudi Arabia.

Shortly after the move he overtook Pele to become Brazil's all-time leading male goalscorer with 78 goals, but has not played for his country since his initial knee injury in 2023.

Neymar makes Santos return after 12 years

Brazil striker Neymar said the feeling of playing for Santos again after 12 years away from the club was indescribable.

The 33-year-old returned to the Brazilian club on 31 January from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, 12 years after he left to join Barcelona in 2013.

Taking to the field at half-time when Santos held a 1-0 lead, Neymar impressed in the second half in his return from injury as Botafogo fought back to earn a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Vila Belmiro.

"I love Santos," said Neymar.

"I have no words to describe what I felt tonight when I stepped again on this pitch.

"I need minutes, games. I'm not at 100%. I didn't expect to run and dribble so much tonight. I think I'll feel better in four or five games."

A number of Botafogo players and members of the club's backroom staff sought out Neymar on the pitch after the final whistle to request photos with the former Brazil captain.

Neymar won six trophies during his first stint with Santos, including the 2011 Copa Libertadores.

He left the club having scored 136 goals in 225 appearances by the age of 21.

During his time away, Neymar became the most expensive player of all time when he left Barcelona to join Paris St-Germain in a £200m deal in 2017.

But a move to Saudi Arabia in 2022 turned sour when Neymar tore his anterior cruciate ligament, which limited him to just seven appearances for Al-Hilal.

Santos, the former club of Brazil legend Pele, were relegated from the top division for the first time in their 111-year history in 2023.

They earned promotion back to the top flight at the first time of asking last season by winning Serie B.

Neymar returns to Brazil squad after stellar form at Santos

Brazil have recalled Santos forward Neymar for this month's World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina after more than a year, the soccer federation announced on Thursday.

The 33-year-old sustained a knee injury in Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023 and has struggled to get back to his best and secure a spot in the squad.

After a disappointing spell at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, Neymar returned to his boyhood club Santos in January, scoring three goals and providing three assists in seven matches which has caught the eye of Brazil coach Dorival Junior.

Neymar has 128 caps and a record 79 goals for his country, surpassing Pele's tally of 77.

He was part of Brazil's gold medal-winning squad at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and also helped them finish runners-up to Argentina at the 2021 Copa America.

Brazil, who are fifth in the CONMEBOL table with 18 points from 12 games, host Colombia on March 21 and visit Argentina five days later. The top six qualify directly for the World Cup.

Santos' Neymar leaves pitch in tears after injury

Santos forward Neymar left the field in tears after injuring his leg just 34 minutes into his first start in the Brazilian Serie A Championship this season.

The 33-year-old, who returned from six weeks out with a thigh injury against Fluminense on Sunday, was handed a start against Atletico-MG on Wednesday.

The former Barcelona forward was wearing a special number 100 shirt to commemorate his 100th appearances at Santos' Vila Belmiro stadium.

But, after gesturing towards the bench following Alvaro Barreal's goal to put the home side 2-0 up, Neymar sat on the field to await medical attention.

It was quickly decided that he could not continue and a clearly-emotional Neymar was taken off the field on a buggy, holding the left-thigh area that had kept him out for the previous six weeks.

Neymar was consoled by his own team-mates, as well as former Brazil team-mate and Atletico-MG forward Hulk.

"It's still too early to give any definitive answer, we don't have a diagnosis yet," said Santos coach Cesar Sampaio.

"Now we really have to pray that it's not something that will keep him out for a long time."

The former Paris St-Germain forward has made eight appearances for Santos and scored three goals since returning to the club from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

Neymar, Brazil's record scorer, has not played for the national side since October 2023 - when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament.

The forward was named in Brazil's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Colombia but was forced to withdraw following injury.

A wasted talent. I hope he plays the FIFA World cup next year though which will be last for the trio - him, Ronaldo and Messi
