Nine people were being treated for life-threatening injuries after a series of stabbings on a train near Cambridge in eastern England on Saturday, and two men were arrested in what prime minister Keir Starmer called an “appalling incident”.

British Transport Police said counterterrorism police were supporting its investigation while it works to establish the full circumstances and motivation for the incident.

The police force also said that “Plato,” the national code word used by police and emergency services when responding to what could be a “marauding terror attack,” was initiated. That declaration was later rescinded and no motive for the attack was disclosed.

“We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further,” British Transport Police (BTP) chief superintendent Chris Casey said. “At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.”

Cambridgeshire constabulary said armed police attended after officers were called to the scene at Huntingdon station at 7.39pm on Saturday.

“Armed officers attended and the train was stopped at Huntingdon, where two men were arrested,” the police said.

The East of England ambulance service has deployed a “large-scale response” to the incident. A spokesperson said numerous ambulances, tactical commanders and its hazardous area response team were at the scene, adding: “We can confirm we have transported multiple patients to hospital.”

One witness who was on the train recalled seeing someone move through the carriage warning others: “They’ve got a knife, I’ve been stabbed.”

The witness told Sky News the man was “extremely bloodied” and that by the time the train stopped “they were basically on the floor”.

“That person ended up collapsing on the floor. They were taken to an ambulance pretty much straight away,” he said.

Witnesses say people wounded by the attack were seen sprinting through the train away from somebody with a knife.

Later on, armed police were seen directing their weapons at a man standing on a platform with a large blade, a witness said. The man was then incapacitated with a taser and restrained.

One witness said they saw between six and eight people who were wounded, while another said up to 12 may have been injured.

Police said the attack happened on the 6.25pm train service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross, shortly after the LNER train left Peterborough station.

Keir Starmer said the incident was “deeply concerning” and urged people to follow police advice.

In a statement on X, the prime minister said: “The appalling incident on a train near Huntingdon is deeply concerning. My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response. Anyone in the area should follow the advice of the police.”

The MP for Huntingdon, Ben Obese-Jecty, said: “Very reassuring to see such a quick and effective response from the emergency services.

“I’ve simply never seen as big a response to an emergency incident as there were in terms of police, fire and ambulance.”

The home secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said she was “deeply saddened” to hear of the stabbings and added: “I urge people to avoid comment and speculation at this early stage.”

London North Eastern Railway (LNER), which operates east coast mainline services in the UK, confirmed the incident had happened on one of its trains and has urged passengers not to travel because of “major disruption”. Huntingdon station is closed, National Rail said, with all lines blocked.

LNER said: “We are experiencing major disruption across the LNER route. Emergency services are dealing with an incident at Huntingdon station; all lines are blocked. Our advice is ‘Do Not Travel’. Please defer your travel where you can.”

The shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, said that it “seems to be a brutal mass attack”. He added: “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected and the emergency services responding. The police and government should provide an update on what happened and who has been arrested as soon as possible.”

Cambridgeshire constabulary urged anyone with information about the incident to report it online, quoting incident 495 of 1 November, or by calling 101.

What a shame! What do such people get by attacking innocent people, that too children? Hope the injured recovers soon.

Mayor of London describes Cambridgeshire train stabbing as 'deeply concerning'

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has described the “horrific” attack as “deeply concerning” and said he is in “close contact” with the Metropolitan police to ensure all “necessary support is provided”.

In a post to X this morning, he wrote:

The horrific incident on the train in Huntingdon is deeply concerning. My thoughts are with those injured and affected. I am grateful to our emergency services for their swift response.

I am in close contact with the Met and transport authorities to ensure all necessary support is provided. Anyone planning to travel on LNER services today should check before they travel.

The stabbing attack has caused widespread shock across the UK.

A spokesperson for the Rail, Maritime and Transport union said: “We are horrified by the mass stabbing attack on an LNER train last night.

“Our thoughts remain with the train crew and passengers who were either at work or going about their business on a busy Saturday night during this awful incident.

“It is important we allow the emergency services and authorities to establish the full facts before commenting further.”

UK police rule out terror in train stabbings, two British nationals arrested

UK police say two British nationals were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a mass stabbing on a train in eastern England, adding the attack was not a “terrorist incident.”

The men in custody were a “a 32-year-old male, a Black British national, and a 35-year-old man, a British national of Caribbean descent,” British Transport Police superintendent John Loveless tells reporters.

“At this stage, there is nothing to suggest that this is a terrorist incident.”

Poor GB news and the right wing press, not to mention the Hindutuva.

Uk is such a mess. Every institution is failing it's citizens which is the knock on effect of these Corrupt Politicians failing to do what they were elected for and Foreign agendas and Policies being their total focus.

Terrible.

Have the authorities said what the motive was? Although killing a bunch of people on a train seems more like senseless without any motive.

Terrible and sickening.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those who are affected and their loved ones.

Police say "there's nothing to suggest" a stabbing attack on board a Doncaster-London train on Saturday was "a terrorist incident"

Four of the nine people initially thought to have life-threatening injuries have been discharged - two remain in a life-threatening condition

Police also say two men, both British nationals, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder - here's everything we now know.

Heroic' train worker saved many lives in stabbing attack, police say

A railway staff member who "saved many people's lives" while protecting train passengers from a knifeman is in a life-threatening condition in hospital.

The intervention by the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) worker, who has not been named, was described as "heroic" by a police spokesman.

A 32-year-old man is the only suspect after the attack on a train from Doncaster to London King's Cross, which stopped in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, shortly before 20:00 GMT on Saturday.

Eleven people were treated in hospital after the attack. On Sunday evening, British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed five casualties had been discharged.

A "surge" in police presence at major rail terminals - including London, Birmingham, Leeds, York and Manchester - is expected until at least Tuesday.

A 35-year-old man, who was also arrested at the scene, has been released with no further action after it was reported "in good faith" that he had been involved in the attack. Officers later confirmed this was not the case.

The force confirmed the LNER staff member in life-threatening condition had tried to stop the attacker.

"Having viewed the CCTV from the train, the actions of the member of rail staff were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people's lives," a BTP spokesman said.

The accused has been charged with 10 counts if attempted murder - Anthony Williams, 32, from Peterborough.

The cult and Tommy's gang must be fuming right now.

On the contrary, they are all releasing lots of hate social media accusing Starmer of a deliberate cover up. I watched one ranter complaining that how come they released the information that he was British born? If he was an immigrant it would have been held back from the public.

This is how such sickness is spread and aided by the cult you speak of.

British citizen but we have clue of the skin colour.

If this guy turns out to be non-white, then his citizenship doesn't matter.

Sadly we are down to the old skool metrics of judgement - race.

I don't understand why knives still insist on having a sharp tip, when you have mass stabings?

Anyway, this is a tragic incident, but not surprising. I hope the injured make a full recovery.

He's not really being judged on his race. Neither was the one who killed the girls in Southport. Both these perpetrators were black and born in Britain, and that doesn't really suit the Reform vote support base. I still haven't seen any of them calling out the black population and their responsibility for producing such monsters.

It happened back in the 80's and 90's, but now it's BLM bruv.

When crime stats are published, and the obvious is pointed out, Blacks commit more knife crime than any other demographic (lets call it race to keep things 80s/90s) then its the left that cry racism!

The narrative fitting Reform/Tommy is non-white, or Muslim - outside of this there is no fuel to the fire there is no narrative.

How's the Paul Doyle story? The WHITE BRITISH guy who went on a driving rampage during the Liverpool parade. How's that story coming along? Exactly, buried, cos the perpetrator was white.

A lot of Brits were feeling sorry for him. I wonder if they would have the same energy if he was Muslim/non-white.

People often wondered how the people of Germany could have allowed the Nazis to rise to exterminate an entire ethnic population, but we are seeing the same patterns as pre-Hitler days playing out today.

Its good parts are probably not as good as the US.

But its crappy parts are for sure not as crappy either. Does that make it third world? I dont think so.

It's just one of those casual phrases that seem to be thrown around by those who suck on the teat of the right-wingers on X, etc.

Yep, I've seen the dregs of the USA and they are probably worse. Obviously for the elite who can afford to live in the nice parts, it's great, but there seems to be large parts of the USA which have basically been left broken and desolated. It looks more third world than most of Britain.

I don't think modern day UK wants to put the non-whites into gas chambers.

It’s not all about infrastructure and standard of living. Security is something that is equally important. UK is always in the news over these random mass stabbings. They may not be as bad as South Asia overall, but when it comes to safety in public places, it beats subcontinent countries. You never know when someone goes on a rampage in the streets and public transport.

That is because blacks are not a problem in UK. They are an issue in America and hence all police brutality, BLM movements etc. but black Christian community in UK is generally peace loving. This is from my personal experience as an observer.

This only exposes your total lack of interaction with British blacks in general, but not that surprising. Indian immigrants would not generally have any idea about black culture in the UK.

Uk has one of the most outdated railways in Europe but over recent years anti social and violent behaviour has increased significantly.

This man was clearly intoxicated, showing his knife in barbers shop where police ignored the reports , allowing this murderous rampage.

I suspect the government will use every such incident to bring in digital ids. Once the UK public hit back hard against this , coincidentally violent attacks were reported every other day esp if involved a person of colour.

There is violence in the 3rd world but almost all is criminal or political. In the west inc America random people go and murder random people for no reason. There is no real motive here. Uk needs to build a superprison on island here to lock up anyone who threatens violence with knife’s or other such weapons in public .

You mean to say black culture has knife and machete problem?

That’s because everything is sensationalised. Does U.K. have more homocide per capita than other countries?

The U.K.’s homicide rate is 1 per 100,000 and the US is 6.8. Japan is the lowest with 0.2 per 100,000.

Now this....

Police swarm London Bridge station as passengers 'evacuated' over 'suspicious man'

Police have swarmed London Bridge Tube station following reports passengers were evacuated from a number of platforms. British Transport Police said they were called to reports of a man "behaving suspiciously" on a train from St Albans.

Thameslink on X tweeted: "The police are dealing an incident at London Bridge. This has recently happened and we are working on gathering more information for you."

Thanks for the laugh.
