Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik on Wednesday said he had “no idea” why he was left out of Pakistan’s team for the tour of New Zealand as there was “no communication” from the national selection committee.

Last month, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced a combined squad for the tour of New Zealand. However, Malik, who now plays only T20 format, was missing from the jumbo 35-member group.

“If I am not part of the national team, only the chief selector can answer this I have no idea. There wasn’t any communication from them but of course I don’t want to go into the (dwell on) negative side and just stay positive,” Malik told PTI during a virtual interaction facilitated by the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

The former skipper, who currently is currently in Sri Lanka playing for Jaffna Stallions in the LPL, said he is focussing on making most of the opportunities he has in hand.

“I have a great opportunity in my hands that is the Lanka Premier League and my total focus is on the league and I don’t want to focus on where I’m not present. I have played enough cricket and I feel whatever you have in your hand you should focus on that,” Shoaib said.

The all-rounder, who has featured in 35 Test, 287 ODIs and 116 T20Is for Pakistan, asserted that he has no intention of retiring soon. He said, “I have no intentions of retiring from this format so far but let’s see how it goes.”

The 38-year-old said appointing Babar Azam as captain in all three-formats was a great move by the PCB but added that the board should allow the swashbuckling batsman to lead on a long-term basis.

“It’s a great move which the PCB has taken. They should announce him as captain for the next three years at least. He can make his own team for different formats. It is important for the board to instil confidence in Babar that they are there to back him in tough times. Providing confidence to your captain and players should be the first priority and then we can expect consistent results from him. He has been performing so well in all three formats I’d like to see him do the same in captaincy as well,” he said.

Malik commended the organisers of the Lanka Premier League for organising a tournament amid a pandemic, adding that despite some pull-outs this year there will be some big names competing in the tournament next year.

“The quality of cricket in Lanka Premier League is very good. From next year I am sure there will be more big names. These are tough times and we are using only one stadium.

“From next year, when we all come out of this pandemic LPL will have more venues and crowds. Crowd makes things bigger. But in these tough times the way LPL has been organised is remarkable,” Malik said.

he veteran all-rounder also LPL will help unearth the T20 talent in the country but said it is imperative that these youngsters be given opportunities consistently.

“We have seen whoever started their own league, the cricket improved. It will happen in Sri Lanka too. A lot of players will come up but having said that this format you don’t select the players for Test cricket.”

“First class cricket is very important and you must pick players from there but this league will give you T20 players. They must be provided consistent opportunities,” Malik said.

Well, never say never!

He could well be back in Pakistan T20 side for World Cup!

Not exactly tearing it up in the LPL:

No please God no !!
I want to see new look Pakistan side. Please get rid of Hafeez, Malik n co.

I'm not exactly Hafeez's biggest fan but he could well stick around for the cup and then go. No denying his form has been good.

The t20 side is shaping up to be good with some exciting talent coming through and some hopefully good looking comebacks in Hussain Talat.

If the t20 WC is held in India i'd be surprised if he wasn't selected in the squad. Abdullah Shafique and Khushdil would have to go on a mad one between now and then to push him out.

Thank you Misbah!

Never seen a better and more young squad in our history.

We need experience in the T20 wc squad. Malik should be called back. Also, Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz, and Mo Irfan should also all come and play T20i WC. Sohail Tanvir would also greatly bolster the bowling attack.

This can be a good lineup:

Babar, Kamran Akmal, Hafeez , Shafiq, Malik, Sarfraz, Sohail Tanvir, Shadab Khan, Mo Irfan, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Amir.
Experience is the need of the hour. We can't deny the invaluable experience Malik and others can bring

~40 year old has no idea why he’s no longer selected for the national side - really?

That's good we can open the WC with a joke lol

He’s got to keep his name attached to the national team otherwise his value will drop.

Only left for T20 leagues which he was just made for.

Credit to him where it’s due his fitness is meticulous to say the least.

Don’t know if he was ever injured for a long period of time apart from the usual
Hammy (hamstring) here n there.

a lot of LPL players talking about their home country tournaments/national squads instead of what they're going in the LPL.

At times like these you have to appreciate Shahid Afridi.

On his own terms, and still with good fitness, he made the decision to retire at 43 sorry I mean 35

It's not the Pakistani way to inform players when they have been dropped.

You just have to get on with it, pick up the pieces and try to make your way back.

I don't think it's going to be easy for Malik to make a comeback, but it's probably a good tour to miss for him.

Are you being serious or is this a joke

He should be privillaged to have playrd all them games for pakistan just retire

What has 40 yr old malik ever done at the intl level that half a dozen fully backed half decent young players cant do?

Hes hardly a pakistani legend that pakistan cant do without

Some of the comments are a tiny bit harsh! Shoaib's t20 record is good and he's extremely fit (being married to Sania has clearly helped him a ton).

Shoaib remains capable of a performance in India and his off spin can be handy too. Anywhere else you could drop him without a second thought but not here.

If you want Shoaib to be replaced then someone has to take his place first. The floor is open to any of the youngsters in NZ to put their hands up. Lets see what they've got.

I stopped reading at Kamran akmal

Malik has a pretty shoddy record in NZ, I haven't been up to date on his stats, but the guy always disappoints in these foreign conditions

""No Communication From Selectors"..... and hopefully there never will be again. Ameen

Why do our players always ask for “communication” when they are dropped/not picked?

The squad is announced and your name is not on the list. Isn’t that enough communication that you are not playing?

Isn’t that how it works in other countries or do every player that gets dropped receives a phone call from the selectors?

Call him and tell him what? that you are in a terrible form and you should have retired from all formats a year ago.

If thats whats going to make him retire then they should make the phone call

There is every chance that some of these guys who have not made it to New Zealand get another chance if the tour goes horribly wrong.

Meanwhile Malik is having a stinker so far in the LPL.

I watched the documentary on Australian Cricket on Amazon, The Test, and it appears they are transforming the communication between selectors and the players. Typically players are informed of being dropped before the press. To go along with that, the players are also informed of the reason for being dropped so they can work on the issue. In Malik's case, the selectors probably didn't have the funny bone to tell him to move to Nepal to play cricket.

Excellent catch by Malik to dismiss Angelo Mathews

The sense of entitlement is beyond description here.

If he hadn't dropped it initially, it would have avoided the extra drama. I wouldn't call it an excellent catch.

Can someone please confirm if this is a legal catch?

My understanding was that the rules were changed a few years ago. If a players goes outside the boundary, he has to reenter the playing area before taking the catch. This was to stop someone standing behind the boundary and jumping up to parry the ball inside.

Here, Malik takes the catch before his foot hits the ground, ie before be re-enters the playing area. Should this count?
