I know its a commendable fight but i hope our players and coaches (looking at you Mickey) do not go in the media and start talking about how they are now confident they can beat Australia, barring last session we have been behind Australia in this game playing catch up cricket and needs a lot of improvement in next test to even compete over 5 days.
Moral wins have no place in modern cricket.

It lifts your moral so it has some place ;)

But you have to start from zero in every test so these moral victories are nothing. Just look at England team in the current indian series. They managed to draw the first test but still couldn't stop india from winning the series.

What're you on about?

We ended up whitewashing Australia in the moral victory series when we visited their country 2 years back which Australia would struggle to repeat when they come over to India the next year.

absolutely agree, A defeat should be taken as a defeat, it is great to see a fight and Yes, it means you can definitely compete and win against your opponent, it gives you belief, but that is it, It doesn't give you wins, It doesn't mean in the next game Pakistan will score 500.

Pakistan needs to be more consistent and all the players should be working hard towards that.

To be honest I hadn't really experienced many moral victories over the years because usually when we lose we either lose big or lose unexpectedly from a winning position.

But I see their worth. I'll be happy and in good mood regardless of result tomorrow

They should have tried to win the first test after being in such a strong position and everything going for Eng. If anything, Indians would have felt that they got moral victory in that test.

Anyway, my comment was in jest. Moral victories are just about moral and you have to actually do better next time due to having some confidence otherwise it's useless.

Anyway, Pakistan has still not lost all wickets so if I was playing for Pakistan, moral victory won't even come in my mind at this moment.

Seeing the light I see.:amir2

If people were to put aside their biases they would realize just how abysmal Pakistan has been in Australia for the last 21 years. I also dont put much stock in moral victories, but usually Pakistani teams show up in Australia and are beaten to the pulp in three days and that sets pattern for the tour.

This is a huge huge day for Pakistan cricket

Pakistan has not scored more than 350 in Australia for more than 21 years. So yes, there is something to this moral victory.

I hope we move on from the fight and realize we are 1-0 down with all the catching to do.If we lose at MCG a 4th consecutive whitewash awaits us.

As long as we take this self-belief that we can score against this Aussie bowling attack forward, we can expect better results. And of course select the right playing XI. Sami & Rahat should make way for Sharjeel & Sohail.

Once again today Ian Botham talked about the Sydney 2009-10 test and how Pakistan should have won that. Pakistan showed brilliance last time as well. Some exceptional spells of bowling and some good attacking batting but at the end of the day its the scoreline that matters.

Agree with the OP. The moral victory counts only if it helps you win the next test. It has made the series interesting for the spectators though. Thanks to Pakistan for that!

Despite that,
1.Pakistan still lost the game in a little more than 4 days
2.The much talked about bowling line up could manage just 15 wickets on a fast pitch.

Do you see a win from the current trend?
A team that already lost a game at home against a depleted WI at home, 2 games against NZ( in super short games).

India got the moral win in that Kohli chase game then got duly thumped in next test hope we can avoid this.

We drew a Test in Perth and pushed Aus in the D/N Test last year, yet I still felt like we failed.

a part of it was you got smashed in the return home series had NZ done well at at home things would have looked respectable for you.

Incorrect - didn't get "duly thumped", just lost. Batted well to get 400+ in first innings and had Australia reeling at 120/6 in the last innings but still lost.

India did well for an Asian side though by drawing 2 of 4 tests and that's the scoreline.

last few wickets fell when the game was done Aus never broke a sweat in the chase but my point stands the carry over momentum counted for nothing.

Agree with that it counted nothing in next test. Better example is when India won the Lord's test and was leading 1-0 against England only to get "duly thumped" in the next 3 tests.

Against Aussies, India did well in that series especially considering the head to head record. I think Aussies have lost all test against India in the last few years. Not sure what the exact record is, I'll check though.

Yup precisely. This fightback will setup the series now.

Morally Pakistan attained glory in a losing cause arguably than ever in their test history.Pakistan staged one of the game's most sensational resurgencies all but pulling of a Houdini act.Only 2-3 teams in the 4th innings or about 10 teams in the history of the game have ressurected themselves from the grave to come within touching distance of victory as Pakistan did here like the equivalent of a dramatic reversal in the climax of a Hollywood epic.On the last 2 days Pakistan were the moral winners displaying the resilience of an army batalion.Salute Pakistan for this valiant effort and may it set the path for Pakistan to come back and win the series 2-1.Above all test cricket gained it's greatest victory and was the biggest winner.

It's great that we got close to chasing down a big total, in Brisbane against Australia under lights. No mean feat so well done.

However, I still can't help but feel that great sides, no 1 sides, finish the job and go for the jugular. They make the impossible happen. They don't wonder about out of the crease to be run out and the hang in there when the bowler has the upper hand.

Nevertheless well done team misbah.

India did much better in 2003/04 tour of australia. Was close to winning the first test at gabba but rain spoiled it. India won the next test in adelaide though. If pakistan manage to win the boxing day test then you can say that they got the confidence from this fight back.

Thanks mate. Appreciate your words, specially the way you wrote it.

I see you have knowledge on lots of Test cricket history too.. where do you rank this game.

A good effort in the end but as i expected before the series, the Aussies will win the series easily and the Melbourne test will be another defeat. The margin of the defeat is misleading as the Aussies declared and could easily added more runs before they declared.

This performance will only matter if we win the next Test. Then we can look back at this seminal moment and say, yes it changed the course of the series.

Once again it shows how useless are these moral victories come a new day and a new game and the momentum can easily swing back.
