Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Wasim Khan is hopeful of convincing Australia to return to the country after 24 years with an extensive tour involving Tests and limited-overs matches in 2022, saying on Thursday: “There is no reason right now Australia won’t be coming”.

A long-awaited resumption of Australian teams playing in Pakistan appeared to move a step closer on Wednesday night (AEDT) when Wasim mentioned in a statement confirming a first England tour in 16 years next October that “we also expect Australia to visit Pakistan for their FTP [Future Tours Programme] commitment in early 2022.”

Josh Hazlewood believes the Adelaide Oval should get a Test later in the India series if the first Test is forced away due to COVID-19

Contacted in Lahore by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age on Thursday, Wasim said there had been no agreement yet for an Australian return to Pakistan but reported talks with Cricket Australia had been positive.

“Our international cricket departments are working together on the schedule for February and March 2022,” he said.

“By then a lot of cricket will have been played in Pakistan.

“There’s been no formal announcement at the moment because there is still a lot of cricket to be played. But all things going well, we’re looking forward to welcoming them in 2022.”

Under the FTP, the international playing calendar, Australia are scheduled to play two Tests, three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 games away to Pakistan. It was forecast last year that an Australian visit to Pakistan, if given the green light, would most likely come in the form of a brief fly-in, fly-out series of white-ball matches but the PCB would like them to stay longer.

“All of those things are being discussed at the moment,” Wasim said. “Ideally, as a PCB we would like them to come for an extended period of time, so we can complete both white and red-ball obligations.”

Australia last toured Pakistan in 1998 when captain Mark Taylor famously compiled 334 not out in the second Test at Peshawar, matching Don Bradman's then Australian record of.

Back then players could use a day off to safely take a minibus trip up the Khyber Pass and peer into Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

While international sides continued touring there until the deadly attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in 2009, Australia haven’t been back this century because of security concerns and have instead been hosted by Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates and in 2010 in England.

The emergence of the country’s own Twenty20 tournament, the Pakistan Super League, since 2015 has aided in re-opening it to the cricket world and in the last three years West Indies, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have sent international sides there.

South Africa are also due there for Tests and T20s in January followed by New Zealand for white-ball games next September and England for T20 matches.

Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts visited Pakistan in September 2019 on his way back from Australia's Ashes tour of England and other Australians have played and coached in the PSL, including Shane Watson, Ben Dunk, Chris Lynn, Ben Cutting and the late Dean Jones.

“With all the safety that’s going on behind the scenes ... you would think that we’d be very close to going back," said former Australia coach Darren Lehmann, who played in the 1998 series.

“It’s a beautiful place to go. I really enjoyed my tour there. Their passion for the game is second to none. I can’t see why we wouldn’t go back if everything is safe, for the good of the game in their country."

Interim CA chief Nick Hockley was unavailable for comment.

Heard pcb are trying to convince aus for A team tour in October 2021 if true then good idea

Australia usually doesn’t need a reason to not tour Pakistan. They stopped touring a decade before Pakistan became a no go area for rest of the world.

They will tour if they want to. Pakistan’s nagging rarely works on CA. They are a lot more stubborn than ECB.

The difference is there was no WTC points on stake before. In 2002, they used the excuse of Karachi bombing during the NZ tour. In 2008, when they last cancelled the Pakistan tour, Pakistan had a terrible security situation which is not the case today.

Points are at stake for PCB as well. Pakistan can win home Tests against Australia, so if Australia refuses to tour we will have no option to but play in UAE.

All of this depends on if the ICC is willing to enforce home series and points. Given what happened to the Womens India and Pakistan points sharing debacle, I dont have much hope.

Playing in UAE would be a massive step back for Pakistan. If the South Africa tests happen next year and England and New Zealand tour next year for LOI's Australia will have no option but to tour or forfeit points.

Anti Pakistan fans continuing to encourage the Australian white privilege approach which was often overlooked back when BCCI was a weak cricket board.

There is no reason to not tour if England, South Africa and New Zealand tour.

Aussies are ridiculously arrogant in this regard - they don’t need any reasons. Their cricket season is between November to February- they didn’t tour Asia or Africa in that window either - India/PAK series before October or after March and SAF almost always after March.

I’ll be fairly surprised if Aussies do come during Wasim’s tenure. I am not sure about the 2021-23 WTC fixtures, but it might happen Aussies will instigate ICC to take out PAK ties.

Great. England, South Africa and now Australia. If these tours happen and NZ join the party too, then BCCI will have no excuse not to tour Pakistan. I hope to see Ind-Pak tests in my lifetime.

Pakistan aren't competitive in the WTC, so it's a hill they can happily die on. Play us at home like others will be by that time or no tour.

Aussie exceptionalism is very real. They will invent a reason to avoid this tour.

We can’t even call on the Indians to help call out their ** like they did back in 2007 because India doesn’t want anything to do with Pakistan either.

The fixtures are not finalized yet, are they ? The Australian board will make sure there will be no scheduling of away series against Pakistan , same way India-Pak series will be avoided again during the next fixtures. Easy Peasy.

It will mean easy series for Pakistan in the WTC, not playing ( Ind, Aus) in the WTC increases Pakistan's chances to qualify for WTC final.

I think it would be unfair on Bangladesh who did their level best to not tour Pakistan but eventually had no choice to tour if anyone else is allowed to get away with not touring Pakistan.

All this is good talk but when I see David Warner taking guard at the NSK is when I will believe this.

Following could be the most likely scheduled series for Pakistan in the next Cycle without India/Australia.

Home :
V/s West Indies
V/s England
V/s NZ

Away :
V/s Sri Lanka
V/s SA
V/s Bangaldesh

It will still be a decent challenge for Pakistan towards it's journey to the finals and if they make it then fair play to them.
