Northern First XI Head Coach Mohammad Wasim: “Northern played some exhilarating cricket last season and we made some innovative plans that brought us success in both the shortest and longest format. I have retained the core of the players who served the squad well and have added young blood with an aim of developing more top quality players who can not only serve us but can also graduate to the highest level of the game.”

This squad has some new names. At least Muhammad Wasim is not afraid of giving the chances to youngsters.

I wish Huraira was the part of main squad. He is very good player of spin plus an excellent fielder.

Poor Sadaf Hussain couldn't make in 32 squad and playing.

As an additional player.

Northern were the surprise package last season. On paper it appeared they lacked the depth of other sides, but under coach Mohammad Wasim played an aggressive brand of cricket with a young team and reached the Final while winning the National T20 Cup.

What's for sure they won't be a dull team to watch.

Strengths: An aggressive, result-oriented brand of cricket. Northern also possess many excellent white-ball cricketers.
Weaknesses: Batsmen were guilty at times of rash strokeplay last season.

Possible XI: H Ali, Malik, Amin, Riaz, A Sarfaraz, Azam/Imad, Nazir, Shadab, N Ali, Rauf/Waqas, Shaheen
Players to watch: Haider Ali has impressed at U19 and FC level so far with his range of strokeplay. His role model is Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile Zeeshan Malik is a hard hitting opener while Mohammad Hurraira has modelled himself after Babar Azam and caught the eye in the U19 WC.

*Spotted they've lost Shaheen to KPK, so I'll put Waqas Ahmed at 11 in that imaginary XI ^^

Muhammad Hurraira got selected as additional player which is good to see. Surprising that Amad Butt couldn't make the main squad of any team and is additional player for Northern.

Shiraz Khan and Munir Riaz are decent upcoming pacers from the recent U 19 squad.

Does that mean hurraira will only play throw injuries or can they stil be selected

He will definitely play in the second XI. If he performs really well in his first few matches he might get an upgrade.

Thankyou is that squad for 4 day or the odis or the national cup doesnt say

Squad is for all tournaments. I was speaking about FC second XI in my previous post.

But I have a feeling he might get into first XI for one of the shorter formats

He can still be selected. I think additional is most likely like supplementary in PSL, where you dont have an official contract from the region but they can still play you and pay you as per the number of matches you play.

National T20 cup starts September 30. Will be played until around October 10.

Pakistan One Day Cup and QeA First Class dates have not yet been announced but they will likely run from mid-October to end December.

Surprising that Amad Butt couldn't make the main squad of any team and is additional player for Northern.

So a correction, there are two players with the name Amad Butt. The Amad Butt which we know as a fast bowling all rounder is part of Balochistan's main squad. I dont have much information regarding this Amad Butt, saw his name in PSL draft as well and got confused at that time as well. :ssa

Are the additional players only covers for injured players?

As per my understanding they can play as mentioned in post 14 but, I am not 100% sure. I think its just that they dont have a full time contract, and can be played and paid accordingly as per requirements.

Zeeshan malik
And haider ali
Hurraira this guy is technically correct and very good player of spin.
Rauf.

Haider Ali, Rohail Nazir, and Muhammad Huraira. PCB have entrusted all 3 of the best batsmen from the current U19 team to just one side, Northern, instead of spreading them out!

That’s very remarkable as it means they’re showing a lot of confidence in Mohammad Wasim’s coaching abilities which is excellent!

Wasim has an eye for talent, backs young and new players and i dont see any old ttf being recycled in this squad except tanvir but then he has a good t20 record too

I wanted to see Huraira but his name is in additional players list. We are not sure whether he gets any game or not.

Current champions and team to beat in the tournament..

1 Umar Amin
2 Sohail Akhtar
3 Haider Ali
4 Asif Ali/Rohail
5 Shadab
6 Imad
7 Mohammed Nawaz
8 Tanvir / Ammad Butt
9 Rohail/ think Jamal is wk too.
10 Haris/Musa
11 Amir

May be Sohail Akhtar can keep 😅 to play an even stronger bowler. but this team is packed with T20 mercenaries. They won’t lose this.

Umer Amin is getting old I'd try zeeshan malik

I'm looking forward to seeing Zeeshan Malik bat this season. I hope the hype is worth it and he really is good. Zeeshan Ashraf was overhyped to be honest from what I saw in the PSL.

Zeeshan Ashraf is average at best

Zeeshan malik is good

Northern are killing it at the moment with three wins from three.

The batting is powerful with youngsters being given a run at the top of the order, and seasoned pros like Umar Amin, Asif Ali and Sohail Tanvir also supplementing the side.

The bowling can defend any total even if the batting doesn't click like in the last match where they posted only 155 but still won comfortably.

And to think Imad Wasim is still to come into the side. Well done to Mohammad Wasim and Shadab Khan.

wasim sounds very considered, not only planning for the matches, but strategising about how his players may fit into the national team. also seems to have decent man management skills too in how hes handled senior players

Future coach of Pakistan. The only guy in Pakistan coaching who actually knows what he is doing and why he is doing it.

Mohammad Amir playing his first match of the tournament today.

Or simply doesn't care for exerting himself in domestic games

Considering he was dropped for the last international game Pakistan played he had better think about exerting himself soon then or he may find himself short of a career altogether.

He wasn’t dropped. He was injured.

Or simply doesn't care for exerting himself in domestic games

What's going through his head right now is T20 leagues and the quick money. But he needs to remember that many t20 leagues around the world have hundreds of 130kph local bowlers that can bowl cutters like Amir.

He also can't bat or field, so his thinking of being an "automatic" pick after declining a domestic contract is not favourable for his future im afraid and is deluded thinking.

Very strong squad.

Bench strength is there also. Cover for each role.

Imad Wasim wasnt really able to continue the good work and maintain the same atmosphere of Northern since he joined as captain in National T20 2020. Not blaming him but, just didnt work.

Well that's T20 and knockout cricket for you. All it takes is one bad match and you're out. Northern came up against a red hot Southern Punjab team and fell short.

Zeeshan Malik, Haider Ali and Asif Ali didn't fire and they were Northern's biggest hitters.

It's disappointing given how consistent they were in the group phase, winning 8 of 10 matches.

True. Thats how combination of T20 format and knockout can be.

I would question why some 'senior' players played nearly all of the matches despite their lack of form.

Northern probably peaked too soon.

Karachi: Mohammad Masroor has been named as interim head coach of Northern in the absence of Mohammad Wasim for the upcoming first XI Pakistan Cup.

The 42-year-old Wasim has taken the charge as chief selector of the national team. His tenure ended as Northern head coach after team failed to qualify in the final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

Masroor was with the side as assistant coach in QeA Trophy and in order to ensure consistency in the team, Masroor was given the charge as head of coaching panel for the upcoming One-Day tournament.

“Masroor was working with Wasim and we decided not to appoint a new individual as it will create disturbance among the side ahead of all-important One-Day tournament,” Director NHPC Nadeem Khan said.

It must be noted that the Pakistan Cup One-Day Tournament will be played from 8-31 January in Karachi.

Their campaign ran out of steam, perhaps the news of Mohammad Wasim's departure destabilised them.

Their campaign ran out of steam, perhaps the news of Mohammad Wasim's departure destabilised them.

There were several issues.
First and forrmost, they lacked good bowling options, particularly in the fast bowling department.
Just look at the amount of changes they have had to make over the course of all the rounds. Sadaf Hussain, and waqas were also once again exposed for their lack of penetration.

Also, they were the hardest hit by the the absence of players on national duty, and as a result were banking on make-shift players, mostly all-rounders to fulfill specialist roles.

It is actually a testament to Wasim's management skills that he was able to create such a competitive unit with a great mentality in spite of the inexperienced and under-par squad he had.
