Lord's, Edgbaston, Old Trafford and Headingley are the Big Four cricket grounds in England. There's so much history and many classic matches at these grounds, yet have not hosted a single match yet.

However second tier venues like Taunton, Bristol, Cardiff and Ageas Bowl have hosted match after match.

I'm particularly surprised Pakistan vs Australia, which is a huge match on paper, and given the size of the Pakistani fanbase in UK, have been allocated Taunton for their match.

Why not spread the World Cup out across the whole country ?

I think some of these smaller venues do not get to host much international cricket or many big matches, so the World Cup is an opportunity to bring them into the limelight.

That ground in taunton hold only 8000 seats that is so pathetic plus it is so far down the country.

Why not simply hold this match in edgbaston with 25k seats it would have been full house even if not full house at least 20k people wouldv gone since Birmingham is middle of country accessible from all side on top full of Pakistanis

Had the Pak SL game been played on the mention grounds, would have definitely got a game in after 4pm sun was out drainage systems are excellent on those grounds.

I mentioned elsewhere. That bristol should not have got any games, both Bristol and Taunton are tiny grounds. English crowds can travel to Cardiff from this end of the country to watch. Most matches should’ve been at Oval, London, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester. I don’t mind Southampton as it’s a nice ground and probably the biggest in UK.

These grounds have pretty much just as many games as the others, they're just distributed later in the group stages/knockouts. It's allowed Warwickshire and Lancashire to play home games last week, think there'd be a bit of a struggle if the counties were kicked out of all 11 grounds for the entire tournament.

Taunton expands to 12.5k for internationals.

How do they increase capacity for a few matches?

Large temporary stands, quite common at some grounds. Happens at Southampton and Bristol as well off the top of my head.

Worth noting Taunton isn't sold out yet as well.

India v Pakistan should have been at Lords. Im not sure if the two countries have ever faced off at Lords

There are the out grounds counties like Lancashire and Yorkshire can use like Aigburth and Scarborough.
What a rubbish world cup. Rain and silly little stadiums. Never host a world cup in England again.

When the weather holds, there's no better place to host tournaments - see 1999 where they allocated the venues better.

Here the matches have been exclusive to Cardiff, Nottingham and Southern England.

The big venues will get the Ashes test matches this summer. I think its a fair move to allocate matches to the smaller venues as those clubs need the funds to further improve their county sides.

They'll be playing there in the next few weeks as these grounds start to host their World Cup games.

pakistan should have been 2 or 3 group games at old trafford, edgbaston, and headingley. These locations are by far the most passionate locations for pakistans games. ICC are shambles playing our games in taunton, bristol, and trentbridge.

Did someone seriously say pakistan vs india should be at lords where the atmosphere is dead, they only have a few thousand more seats than old trafford. Old trafford is the best ground atmosphere in the country, they allow horns did any of you guys go to previous pakistan matches at this venue over the years. When you have manchester, rochdale, oldham, blackburn, bolton, burnley, nelson, halifax, huddersfield, dewsbury, leeds, bradford, keighley, bury, sheffield, and Im probably missing a few more. u just need to realise the ICC were brainless in not giving pakistan games at old trafford other than the india game which was gona be sold out aneway by the bharat army. not even the area of birmingham and wider midlands has anything in compariaon to the pakistanis living in the north

Dont worry, BCCI's game wont be washing out (unless they're side-ons). Pak and co were purposely put there.
Sad people still cant see that.

I agree there should be more games at these venues. Taunton and Bristol arent even historical grounds. Keep these grounds for warm ups , and use more of the test grounds for the WC games.

The only problem is,they are really under rain most of the time.

Interesting. I was surprised too. I almost had the feeling every match was happening at Trent Bridge and Bristol.

Us bham Pakistanis can match the North, watch the Aus vs Pak T20 games in 2010.

Probably the most one sided match on a neutral venue. I remember being there and there were only a handful of Aussie fans , the rest Pakistani fans. The noise was defeaning esp due to the vuvuzelas, which after this match have been banned as the security found it impossible to communicate with each other.

Are you going to the NZ v Pak match at Edgbaston, I think it will be the best atmosphere of the tournament.

Wish I could but I’m going to be abroad! Otherwise would have went 100% the atmosphere is going to be mad, the Bham Pakistanis are the noisiest rowdiest!!

Bham Pakistani population is over 100k

The birmigham population and wider midlands does not have more pakistani people than lancashire and yorkshire. I went to the twenty20 vs australia also it was nothing compared to the twenty vs the home country at old trafford

Manchester Old Trafford ground here just added a new stand in the past 3-4 weeks, it's massive!

South Africa, Subcontinent, Australia are the best place for world cups. Atmosphere is always great.

?

Saving them for the Ashes.

It's not just about playing games at the top grounds. Think how good it is for the likes of the counties whose grounds are hosting these matches. On top of that, think of the cricket fans who live in these places, they also have the right to watch cricket in their home town.

You can’t compare two counties to one city that’s unfair.

It's been a nightmare to find a half decent hotel near Taunton, it's the most boring place miles away from anywhere decent. If the match washes out there's nothing else to do there where as in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds etc theres a lot more to do. Knowing my luck, I'll be wasting yet another two days on cricket.

Agree with this. WC '03 in SA was a great success by all accounts. Great pitches for cricket, some mighty close games, no weather interruptions from what I remember, what else do you want from a WC?

am not comparing two counties to one city, am conparing the whole of midlands, to the whole of the north. As u know bradford itself has 100k plus pakistani

Bradford has about 70k albeit proportion wise Bradford has more Pakistanis , only Birmingham (excluding London) has 100k plus.

Those numbers maybe wrong actually, but nonetheless Bham has more

Edgbaston has always seen a better atsmosphere. It's a better ground than Old Trafford and Headingly and the locals in Bham supports is always better. Pakistan played a home test against Aus in Leeds, there was one chacha and his dog, the crowd was pathetic. Since then the ECB have not entertained the idea of hosting Pakistan home matches again. Pakistan should play their homes matches at Edgbaston, the world will then see how much support this team has in England and esp in Bham.

Well, we have to focus on what is most important.
And hence my comment that England is least deserving of all test playing nations to host world tourneys....They don't have the right weather, facilities and more importantly, heart to host the biggest event in cricketing calendar.

How many WCs have you guys hosted? 5? ICC would've done well to let far more deserving countries to host them.

Good point.

Disagree. England is much better. Most countries have large expat populations in the UK. Just the weather this time is awful but clearing up by Saturday .

One thing all these ground have in common. Small capacity. Jheez. Couldn’t the filthy rich ECB take one of the stadium to at least 40k capacity?

I wish Pakistan had at least 1 more game in any of those 4. Not too bad for them though.

2 games at Lords
1 game at Edgbaston
1 game at Old Trafford
1 game at Headingley

5/9 games at venues where you traditionally have a lot more support than the opposition and have had plenty of good memories. Our last 4 games which are all must wins if we want a semi final spot will also be in 3 of those venues so here’s hoping we can do it.

lol u think pakistan have better support in birmingham than manchester. dont be kidding me please. Pak vs australia the twenty20 were not even full, pak vs eng twenty20 old trafford was far more pakistanis. u cant beat the atmosphere at old trafford.

The truth of the matter is the venues that have been selected in uk are pretty woeful. we were given taunton, bristol, trent bridge twice (only 18k capacity) and Lords twice(where not many pakistanis attend in majority).

Lets be real Old Trafford, Edgbaston, Headingley should have been given two games each, maybe 1 for trentbridge, 1 for lords, and 1 at oval. The ICC gave us rubbish stadiums on purpose to take away our home advantage.

First game at Lord's! Hope no nasty surprises for Pakistan.

First match at Lords . The atmosphere was electric . Pakistan fans outnumbered Saffers by 10-1 . Even after the defeat to India the fans showed up & gave tremendous support which really lifted the players .

Best ground in the world !

Wednesday Edgbaston will be even more noisy !

Without a doubt. If you’re coming on Wednesday you’ll see the support in Edgbaston will be the best in the tournament . The northerners are just too nice & not loud enough !

have u watched pak vs eng twenty20 at old trafford 2016, or have u been under a rock. I cant think of any pakistan game with that atmosphere. Old Trafford allow horns wheras Edgbaston have banned horns. I have been to both grounds and have been to Edgbaston 3 times, Old Trafford just the once even though I live up north, Edgbaston obviously will have good atmosphere but they have banned horns and it will never match old trafford. If u want to say Edgbaston has better atmosphere than Old Trafford u will have to back ur claim up.

They havent given old trafford a game, other than the India game. Pak vs australia should have been played at old trafford then i would have loved to have a comparision with u king khan. Dont mix headingley and old trafford up, am talking about old trafford. Whenever I have been to pak vs eng games at old trafford, and edgbaston, am gona tell u the truth. Whenever its edgbaston, the pak fans predominately be located in the erric holles stand, when its at old trafford pak fans are in every stand.

If only Pak had more games in London.

Pakistan and London is a very old love story. We almost win all our matches there be it Test or ODI.

No I wasn’t at that game but I’ve enough experience of atmospheres in all sorts of sporting venues including plenty Pakistan matches . Old Trafford is no doubt great , just as Lords was today or any English test cricket ground when Pakistan fans turn up in numbers . I found Edgbaston the best & I was only joking about northerners, truth is Pakistanis from all over England travel to matches esp World Cup .

Air horns were never allowed , some sneak them in . It’s vuvuzelas which made it big in the 2010 South Africa football World Cup . If I can recall the same year Australia played Pakistan in 2 T20 matches at Edgbaston. Felt like every fan had one , the noise was deafening. On the next occasion none were allowed in & I was told by security they couldn’t hear each other on the radios with those going off .

Surprised we could hear the air horns and vuvuzelas at the game yesterday Lords is usually extra tight when it comes to security, wonder if this has been relaxed for the tournament.

Yeah there was someone sat behind me yesterday who had one, it was annoying the others I could tell but I enjoyed it!

Old trafford is the only ground along with cardiff that allow horns. If u see the India vs pak game, at old trafford horns were allowed.

Yes someone sneaked in an air horn but was later confiscated by security. Lords dont even allow flags but were lenient yesterday as long as they were not too big.

I have been to all but 1 ground in England and Wales, and hands down the Oval has the best atmosphere and friendly staff!

As I said above, I am surprised there is no SF at the Oval.

is old trrafford the only ground that does not ban horns?

lancashire ccc as a county always advertise when they hold a pakistan or india game through their twiiter or facebook. They allow horns hence they get the best atmosphere in the country. look at the India vs west indies game today. amazing atmosphere.
