Noticing a trend with PSL captains trying to further their own agendas

It's a bit disappointing to see the PSL captains making some very selfish decisions promoting their own agendas, plans, whatever you wanna call it, instead of decisions and combinations that'll benefit the team resulting in some pretty poor overall performances.

Some examples are:
- Ahmed opening the batting for Quetta
- Akhtar opening the batting for Lahore
- Khan promoting himself to no.3 for Islamabad
- Rizwan batting for himself, for Multan

Yes, they are entitled to do what they want as captains but it's so obvious to see what they're doing, using franchises for personal gain and that's not good to see.

It’s PSL and Pakistan

Do what’s best for you because no one else will.

every captain in these leagues do this.

darren sammy played with injuries just because he could

shadab is no better than a no. 7!

He really is over thinking of himself too much and definitely taking advantage of his captaincy.

Who remembers Wahab Riaz promoting himself to number 5 :)))

Sohail Akhtar unlikely to have an agenda at this age when he is nowhere in Pak’s radar. :smith

How do Lewis Gregory and Faheem Ashraf not bat before:

Shadab Khan
Talat Hussain
Asif Butler
Iftikhar Ahmed

Who is feeding information to Shadab? Misbah’s old boys Whatsapp group??

Sohail Akhtar’s agenda is to make sure LQ dressing room doesn’t turn into a 30 man Royal Rumble

Not for the first time. He has been batting up the order since PSL 4. He was very good at nr 3 in PSL 5.

Either people expect 100's from him everytime or just dont like him.

true, Shadab has performed well at this position, so we shouldn't be complaining.

But zafar gohar going that high made no sense, and asif and iftikhar aswell

Imad and Sarfraz are worst at this with Shadab coming close 3rd

Rizwan is probably the last in the list... guy has already done enough to cement his place for 2 years and his batting today (apart from that 1 weird over shadab bowled ) was phenomenal

Imad pretty much destroyed career of Umar Khan. the guy was doing wonders before Imad made sure he was tortured last season and eventually dropped

Sarfraz only looking to promote himself and thts it .... his natural position is being taken over by Azam khan so now he wants to stick himself somehow to remain useful - which he is NOT

Shadab HAS to do it in batting now.. he has nothing to contribute with bowling so he has to do it with the bat. But no3 is too much for him ... he shld aim to make no4 his position this PSL ..... He also is looking to Drive the likes of Zafar Gohar into the ground. for last 2 seasons , Gohar has either never gotten the 4 overs or given overs when its completely killer for him .....

Sohail Akhter needs to bat as an opener ... LQ have the WORST batting by miles...... Fakhar is completely clueless n useless and they don't have an alternative....

Shadab is a 6 or 7. You can tell when middle order batsman move up the order, they are late on the ball

Shadab at 3 is easily the worst one. His fellow batsmen are desperately wanting to do well in PSL to push for an international call up and yet as a bowler he takes their opportunity at the crease. It's extremely mean really, especially when Shadab will be picked for international duty whether he fails at 3 with the bat or not. Shadab knows he's not batting at 3 in international regardless of what he does in PSL, it's actually more useful to us if he figures out how to provide value with the bat at 7/8 which he isn't doing right now. It makes it look like the rest of the batsmen are so bad, Shadab has to bat at 3.

It really does feel disrespectful to his team.

I don't think the others are that bad apart from Shadab. Sohail is a batsman, he's going to bat in a batting slot, it's just weird he's captain, but that's not his fault. Sarfraz has opened in LOI before with success, and if he were to return in LOI (and Rizwan were to lose form), Sarfraz could find himself opening. Sarfraz is under pressure to show he can perform with the bat, and in LOI has definitely struggled coming down late in the order opposed to others.

Rizwan is just doing Rizwan things. Why Karachi didn't want to play him probably. You kind of just accept he's going to have innings like this every now and again, he's a limited player in many ways, but he's generally a good batsman who will score reliably and a great wicketkeeper.

Someone mentioned Riaz coming up the order once, that was definitely bad, but was so bad he probably will never dare to do it again lol.

Sarfaraz Ahmed opening, Viki and Imad promoting themselves, Sohail Akhtar regarding himself as a batsman rather than a yes man. Shadab Khan is easily the worst. Shadab, Ifti chacha, Asif Ali, Hussain Talat are all similar type batsman.... AWFUL.

Faheem and Lewis Gregory saved IU easily. They should have come in No.5 & No.6. Imad Wasim coming in ahead of someone like Aamir Yamin boils my blood the most. Aamir Yamin is good enough to come in at No.5 rotating with Nabi and Christian. Imad should be permanently slotted in No.8.

Yeah but he hasn't exactly lit up the world with his batting ability so why take someone's spot just for the sake of it?

He has performed decently up the order, so there’s probably a thought process behind it.

It’s more to do with the strategy then just his own agenda. Though there is an element of truth that he does want to bat up the order as well.

Shadab was fantastic with his batting last season in PSL batting at 3/4. It was quite a revelation to be honest.

And frankly speaking, I have zero issue with a young guy doing that and trying to show he can do a bit more. These games are meaningless in itself but it doesn't mean they can't be a useful developmental aspect for a player. It's also one match for Shadab, he showed last season he can do quite well and technically does look like someone that can be quite capable.

Now when you see someone like Sarfraz trying to open in PSL for no reason? That is an issue. He is not young and he is far beyond his peak to even bother trying this. Veterans promoting themselves at the expense of a youngster is an issue. Youngsters promoting themselves over veterans is not.

Keen to see how long this "strategy" works out for...

Shadab did well and it will be good for Pakistan if he develops his batting further, that he can only do batting early so he has reasonable amount of overs to play. Batting Asif Ali and Iftikhar anywhere above 10 andd 11 is the real crime.

Shadab is the worst and most selfish captain.

Did not give Zafar more than one over and benched Rohail and has been promoting himself to top of the order.

With Usman and now Zahid bowling well, Shadab is worried about his position and trying now be more valuable as frontline batsman, which he is not.

Finally a thread which is exposing the captains in this tournament.

I'll just list them and say what they're trying to do:

Sarfaraz Ahmed - thinks that opening the batting gives him a chance at cementing a spot on the team, if he had done so in the previous season I'd say there was a chance but it's too late now. His position is at 3 or 4 where he needs to control the innings in the MO.

Shadab Khan - the lack of bowling form and the lucky PSL V makes Shadab think that he can replicate such performances batting at 3, which is obviously not going to happen. People are no longer going to bowl spin to him, and instead will bowl short to him, something he can't handle. He needs to drop himself down to 5 where he can continue slogging. Should work on his bowling too.

Imad Wasim - it was stated above, and rightly so that Imad ruined the career of Umer Khan. Imad thinks of himself as being enough to hold the front for spin for KK, and that is far from the case. A guy who gets no spin from the pitch isn't a spinner, so the fact that he thinks he can hold the front himself is absurd. Imad bowled 4 overs in the game vs QG if I'm not mistaken, and Nabi didn't bowl a single over, which is absurd. Nabi is a far better spinner than Imad, and should have been utilized against Gayle. If Nabi had bowled, he would have taken a wicket or two, and Imad's ineffectiveness would have come to play.

Wahab Riaz - to be honest, I didn't really see him do anything wrong apart from using bowlers incorrectly, but there wasn't any selfish play in the match today.

Sohail Akhtar - a lot of people think that he's being selfish by opening, that's far from the truth because he's trying to save LQ's best assets (Hafeez and Dunk) from opening. Sohail Akhtar is neither good enough to finish games, nor is he good enough to bat at high strike rates in the middle overs. The best spot then is to open and provide a steady hand alongside a rather aggressive batsman in Fakhar Zaman.

Mohammad Rizwan - hasn't really done anything wrong, made himself open and performed, so seems like a decent captain so far. Would have won if MS had gotten hold of some decent quicks in the draft.

My prediction, as stated a while ago, is that once Nabi leaves, Karachi Kings will struggle for a lack of a good spinner, because Imad and Qasim aren't good enough to hold that bowling front. Imad also knows that he has to bat and bowl well in this PSL to merit a spot on the team.

MS were 15 runs short and that cost them the match , it was mainly due to Rizwan's strange batting approach and particularly the way he played 15th over.

Imad is the smartest captain in PSL, he is flexible and reads the situation well . He is not a test spinner but a top notch T20 spinners, recognized world over.

Nabi is mainly a batting all rounder, not a frontline spinner now. Imad was right for not using his bowling yesterday but promoted him in batting.

Imad is the best captain in PSL.

Imad might be a good captain but he is shrewd in furthering his agenda as well.

He pushed out umer khan from the team, and gave no opportunities to rizwan.

It clearly shows that he will always ensure noone outshines him.

Doesn't look like Danish Aziz is in his plans either...

I don't understand, can you explain these points? Rizwan batted beautifully and batsmen/bowlers positioning is always up to the captain/think tank. Sometimes these works, sometimes they do not....so I am curious what the agendas are here?

It's just reactionary rhetoric.

Had they not opened. The same fans would likely be saying "Why are they hiding behind other players".

Shadab is just 22 ( officially ) , in the beginning I thought he was the most exciting young talent to emerge since Mohammad Amir (when he was 17 ) but since then his performance has been deteriorating and has lost his automatic selection status in Pakistan team. This is the time for him to concentrate 100% to improve his personal game and performance, why has he made captain of a team at 22 ? Does not make any sense.

Captaincy is

Even if some players are pushing their 'Agenda' I think that's fine, at least they are still prioritozing playing for Pakistan and experimenting with things in these T20 leagues so that if it works out they can get selected for Pakistan. At the end if this experimentation can fill in the gaps in Pakistan national team then it is good.

There are players in other countries who are performing for their national team so that they get noticed and getselected for IPL. That is not a good sign.

Rizwan playing for himself is the worst take in that post. Man literally was the only guy that performed for his team and allowed them to have a competitive total if not for a match losing spell by Sohail Tanvir

It's a tournament within a tournament.

You have Rizwan versus Sarfraz, trying to outdo each other. I think that's more Sarfraz rather than Rizwan worrying about the other's performances and what they are doing.

You have Shadab Khan who is coming back after injury, and is keen to impress.

You have Sohail Akhtar who is desperate to keep his job, as many feel he shouldn't be skipper of LQ.

You have Wahab Riaz who is another that many feel shouldn't be skipper at the PSL.

Then there is Imad Wasim who to be fair isn't pushing his own agenda, but then he has the issue of the National T20 captain in his team but is not the skipper.

After conceding 32 runs in 2 overs he bowled, Shadab bumped himself up to #3 again and gets out for a golden duck

I was chatting with a player who is having a good PSL so far and he said to me "it's clear that 5 out of the 6 captains are only interested in self promotion and aren't even worthy of captaining their respective teams."

Hafeez ?? :))

So who is the only worthy one according to him? lol Rizwan or imad?

'Interesting' use of Mohammad Nabi's bowling by the Karachi Kings skipper.

Rizwan has done well as an opener in T20s in the last few months. So him batting there is not really furthering an agenda.

Sohail Akthar job is to take advantage of the PP overs. I don't think he is suited to the middle overs as he can't rotate strike . So I don't see how he is furthering his agenda.

Imad is batting low down the order and bowling at points in the innings which he has always done. So I don't think he is furthering any agenda.

Wahab is bowling at points he always does . He is definitely not even in the conversation.

Shadab is batting too high at 3. But he was promoting himself last season. This for me is probably the only case of someone furthering their agenda.

Sarfraz opened for 1 game, then he went back down the order
. His problems are how he is conducting himself on the pitch. So he is not furthering any agenda.

The trend is certainly dying down a bit with Shadab Khan being the only offender. I think he's just trying a little too hard to stay relevant.

Concerned to see that Nabi was only given one over to bowl by Imad. I think there was another game earlier in the tournament where he didn't bowl much (like 1-2 overs).

Nabi is not bowling much lately in other places also, he is playing mainly as a batsman and part time bowler.

Because with his bowling and batting form at rock bottom, Shadab is trying a bit too much to stay relevant.

Sarfaraz moved down from opening to number 4.

Shadab moving down the order too.

Seems they are learning.

Imad had a good opeertunity to push himself up the order today. Would have been better than nabi who naturally is better at hitting it out in the death overs.

Imad not even giving himself a bowl today, when his team probably needed a couple of big overs from him.

It's gone from one extreme to the other now.

Imad did the right thing by not bowling himself. Nabi has been brilliant and KK had this game in the 19th over

The only point you can blame imad on was that reckless shot to get out first ball and not bringing amir earlier. Other than that karachi were pretty unlucky and carelss. That penultimate amir over where 12 runs came of edges. Those joe clarke and dan christian run outs.

Imad is a selfless captain. And he is actually a good captain, he was unlucky that Amir leaked around 7-8 runs too many in the penultimate over.

Leaving a 14 over gap between Amir's 2nd and 3rd over was a big mistake by Imad today.

He should have brought him on much earlier for his 3rd over and tried to break the Fakhar and Dunk partnership.

Imad made the right decisions today including not bowling himself.

It was unfortunate that Amir's last over went for plenty, when he bowled really well and wiese just got very, very lucky.

The only criticism I have is having that 3rd man in the circle, when the plan was to bowl outside the offstump yorkers.
