The National Union of Students (NUS) president has been sacked for the first time in its 100-year history after anti-Semitism allegations.

Shaima Dallali had her contract terminated on Tuesday after an independent panel found “significant breaches of NUS’ policies have taken place”.

The 27-year-old, a former president of City, University of London’s students’ union, was due to take up her post in July but was suspended the following month after a series of her social media posts sparked controversy.

It prompted the Government to cut all ties and funding in May, with then-universities minister Michelle Donelan saying there was “anti-Semitic rot at the heart of the NUS” and that she was “horrified by the thought of Jewish students feeling ostracised”.

The body, to which around 600 campus unions across the UK are affiliated, then launched an official investigation into Ms Dallali and wider institutional culture, led by Rebecca Tuck KC, a barrister in discrimination law.

On Tuesday, the NUS announced that in an unprecedented move “we have terminated the president’s contract” following the conclusion of this probe. The decision may be subject to an appeal.

Robert Halfon, an education minister, said: “We welcome the verdict to this initial investigation and look forward to seeing the outcome of the next stage, which will provide more detail on National Union of Students’ plans to address anti-Semitism within the organisation.”

Tweets by Ms Dallali that sparked anger from Jewish groups included comments showing apparent sympathy towards Hamas and quoting an anti-Jewish battle cry.

In 2012, she wrote online: “Khaybar Khaybar O Jews … Muhammad’s army will return #Gaza”, a reference to a massacre of Jews in the year AD 628. She apologised when this emerged during her election.

The NUS, which claims to represent seven million students, was also criticised by Jewish student groups for inviting Lowkey, the rapper, to perform at one of the organisation's conferences – at which Jewish students were advised to leave the room, it was claimed.

Lowkey made a series of controversial comments that were branded anti-Semitic. These included that the mainstream media had “weaponised the Jewish heritage” of Ukraine's president, and that Israel was a “racist endeavour”.

The Union of Jewish Students said on Tuesday: “Anti-Semitism in the student movement goes beyond the actions of any one individual and this case is a symptom of a wider problem.

“Jewish students across the country will be asking how an individual deemed unfit for office by NUS was elected in the first place. We await the findings of the substantive inquiry into NUS’ treatment of Jewish students.”

Chloe Field, the NUS vice-president of higher education, will now step up as acting chairman of the NUS UK Board, the organisation confirmed.

“I am proud to fight on behalf of all of our students and therefore I am determined to work together with the Union of Jewish Students to re-establish trust in our organisation and tackle some of the biggest issues facing students right now,” she said in a statement.

Earlier this year, amid the anti-Semitism row, the Government reported the union to the Charity Commission and withdrew permission for its members to sit on Whitehall panels.

In April, more than 20 former presidents of the National Union of Students, including three former cabinet ministers - Jack Straw, Charles Clarke and Jim Murphy - sent a warning to the organisation’s trustees, urging them to address concerns from Jewish students.

The NUS said it was “exploring actions” it can take “in the near future to build trust and confidence with Jewish students” and that “this process has been incredibly robust and that we can and must trust in the outcome”.

The NUS added in a statement: “We are sorry for the harm that has been caused and we hope to rebuild the NUS in an inclusive way – fighting for all students as we have done for the past 100 years.”

Poor again.

Too many organisations, businesses and governments in the west are held hostage to Zionist victim crying.

Treat all equally and this wont happen.

Clearly antisemitism and racism are totally unacceptable, but the examples pulled out here are not necessarily antisemitic in there intentions and full context. The comments seem to have been historic rather than recent and I would have been inclined to give her a second chance.

It is now anti-Semitic to criticise Israeli foreign policy. You can criticise Iran or Saudi though.

People are sick of this one sided bias and in return are being more open about certain people. Antisemitism is on the rise because of extremist Israel and its supporters.

100% Stinks of hypocrisy. The crimes that the zionests get away with is unblievable. Yet question their motives and your labelled as a antisemitic! Mind you our political leaders both in the conservatives and Labour party openly admit their total support and are hugh zionests! Lol

What is troubling is hatred of Jews has been most prominent in Europe but now Europeans are acting as they have done no wrong to Jews and they are protectors. Throughout history Jews seeked refuge from European Christians from Muslims.

Its sad because in the UK there are many anti-Zionist Jews who dress in orthodox fashion but are attacked, which is disgusting while Zionists are never.

Jewish students have a right to complain but other students should have a right to defend or speak their mind without worrying.

As you said; I would have no issue giving her a second chance since she apologized and the tweet is 10 years old. Yet in what context is the following tweet not antisemitic "Khaybar Khaybar O Jews … Muhammad’s army will return #Gaza"? This is not a rhetorical question. I am genuinely curious if someone can explain why a Jew should not be offended by this tweet.

Fact is that in the West there is a strong feeling about such statements. So why say them?

You are free to say that in Pakistan/Muslim countries but accept the fact that in the West this is a No No - and move on.

Nike has suspended its sponsorship deal with Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving after he promoted on Twitter a documentary which contained anti-Semitic material.

Irving is serving at least a five-game ban from the Nets after he initially defended having shared a link to the film.

Irving, 30, later apologised, claiming he is "learning" from what happened.

Nike said it was "deeply saddened and disappointed by the situation".

Irving's deal with Nike, which started in 2014, is reported to be $11m (£9.6m) a year according to Forbes.

Nike, who has also cancelled their next branded shoe release with Irving, said in a statement: "At Nike, we believe there is no place for hate speech and we condemn any form of anti-Semitism.

"To that end, we've made the decision to suspend our relationship with Kyrie Irving effective immediately and will no longer launch the Kyrie 8."

The Nets, without Irving, beat the Washington Wizards 128-86 on Friday to secure their third victory of the season, the win coming at the end of a week that also saw the franchise sack head coach Steve Nash.

Kevin Durant stepped up in Irving's absence, top-scoring for Brooklyn with 28 points, plus nine rebounds and 11 assists.

"Let's put the joy back in basketball," Nets owner Joe Tsai said in a tweet after the win.

You’ve generalised the action of one student body in one nation into “Europeans”. Let us be specific.

Muslims in UK are protected by the exact same legislation that protects Jews.

Agree with every word of this post!

The Palestinians call ALL Israelis Jews, its a term to define them as Zionist not a term used by the oppressed.

Are you going to call occupied people racists when those people are also Semites?

Jews also claim they are a race and also call their nation the Jewish state.

The biggest antisemites are actually Israelis as they their hate against Arab Semites is so high, its evil.

Not true Jews are classed as a race here, Muslims are not. I can give you many examples of inconsistent treatment for those who abuse Jews or those who abuse Muslims.

But ignore all this , calling out Israel for its policies is now racist. Can you name ONE Muslim nation where any criticism of their policies is labelled Islamophobic?

No they're not. Jews are covered under the
Race Relations Act 1976 (and amendments since). Muslims are not.

In fact, in theory, The Race Relations Act 1976 allows for a miracle of nature, in that a non-Jew (not covered under the Act) is then covered under the Act if he/she was to convert to Judaism. ie effectively that individual has changed their race by the mere act of changing their faith.

In fact, the same also applies to Sikhs.

You keep drawing false equivalences.

British Muslims are protected from discrimination by the Equality Act 2010, exactly the same legislation which protects British Jews. Your religion and your race are both Protected Characteristics.

It’s untrue to say that criticism of Israel for its policies is inherently racist. Just be specific in your language e.g. “Israel should pull back to its 1967 borders and stop bulldozing settlements in Gaza and the West Bank”. There you are, no problem.

The Race Relations Act 1976 is obsolete legislation, superseded by the Equality Act 2010 which protects British Pakistanis for their race *and* their religion (and their sexuality, and their gender, and their age, and their disability status if any).

Stop this nonsense.

Legislation is not the point; the point is reaction and repercussion.

Say something against the Jews, and you will be cancelled.

Say something against other people of faith, and you will get a slap on the wrist, and encouraged to speak up!

Why? This is the question which must be answered.

Save this hocus pocus Parliamentary legislation, this is not the point - how dare you sweep injustices under the carpet by thinking we will fall for the Zionist/Liberalist justifications!

Totally wrong.

Jews have stronger protection, the policies of Israel which are criminal are also protected because its a Jewish state. Muslims are not a race and neither are Jews but Jews are considered a race, therefore have stronger protection.

See Labour attacked for any antisemitism but Tories who are far more Islamaphobic are never attacked in the same way.

Truth is Britain and US see Israel as an outpost of theirs and in reality it is, therefore they are protected more and the truth is often hidden.

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Ousted From Foreign Affairs Panel Over Israel Remarks

The US House of Representatives voted Thursday to oust a controversial Democrat from a powerful committee over anti-Semitic comments, in a move seen by her party chiefs as revenge for their previous removal of far-right Republicans.

Former Somali refugee Ilhan Omar, the third Democrat to be stripped of committee assignments by Republicans this year, has made several comments critical of Israel since 2012 that were condemned on all sides.

"I am a Muslim, I'm an immigrant and, interestingly, I'm from Africa," the 40-year-old Minnesota progressive said in a defiant floor speech ahead of her removal from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

"Is anyone surprised that I'm being targeted? Is anyone surprised that I am somehow deemed unworthy to speak about American foreign policy?"

The roughly party-line vote came after Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in Congress, kept a campaign promise to deny seats on the prestigious the Intelligence Committee to Adam Schiff, the panel's last Democratic chairman, and Eric Swalwell.

McCarthy has argued that Democrats created a "new standard" when they were in control by ousting Republicans Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar from committees after they promoted violence against political opponents.

Omar, one of two Muslim women in Congress, apologized in 2019 for suggesting Republican support of Israel was fueled by donations from a pro-Israeli lobby group.

Democrats, who were then in power in the House, initially mulled supporting a resolution to admonish her, but settled on text condemning anti-Semitism that didn't mention her by name.

Five years earlier, before entering Congress, she said Israel had "hypnotized the world," and urged people to open their eyes to the US ally's "evil doings."

She has since said she was unaware at the time of her remarks of the anti-Semitic tropes that invoke Israelis hypnotizing people and connect Jews to money.

House Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries told a news conference ahead of the vote that Omar's comments had already been dealt with.

"So this is not about accountability. It's about political revenge," he said.

The Democrats -- supported by a handful of Republicans -- voted in 2021 to punish Greene for incendiary statements including repeated support for executing prominent Democrats. Gosar's censure came after he posted an animated video manipulated to show him killing a left-wing congresswoman.

Both have spoken at a white nationalist conference, and Greene apologized in 2021 for comparing mask-wearing rules in the US Capitol to the Holocaust. The pair were given committee assignments after Republicans took back the House last month.

Outrage over Abbas's antisemitic speech on Jews and Holocaust

German and Israeli officials have condemned Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for comments he made about Jews and the Nazi Holocaust in a speech.

Mr Abbas said Adolf Hitler ordered the mass murder of Jews because of their "social role" as moneylenders, rather than out of animosity to Judaism.

Israel's ambassador to the UN accused him of "pure antisemitism".

"History is clear," Germany's Ramallah mission said. "Millions of lives were erased - this cannot be relativized."

"We strive to promote a dignified and accurate memory of the victims."

The German ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert, added: "The Palestinians deserve to hear the historical truth from their leader, not such distortions."

Hitler used the Jewish people as a scapegoat for Germany's ills. He also considered them an inferior race which had to be exterminated.

The Palestinian president, who is 87, has previously been denounced by Jewish groups as a Holocaust denier for his doctoral thesis on the Nazis and Zionism.

Yet over the years, he has continued to give long, rambling speeches expounding his offensive views.

His address to the Fatah Revolutionary Council was made last month and later aired on Palestine TV. His remarks were then translated and publicised by the Middle East Media Research Institute on Wednesday. The translation has been verified by BBC News.

"They say that Hitler killed the Jews for being Jews, and that Europe hated the Jews because they were Jews. No. It was clearly explained that they fought them because of their social role and not their religion," Mr Abbas says at one point.

Later, he specifies that he was referring to the role of Jews involving "usury, money and so on".

Mr Abbas also resurrected a long abandoned historical theory that European Ashkenazi Jews were not descended from the ancient Israelites but from 8th Century converts to Judaism among the Khazars, a nomadic Turkic people.

"The truth that we should spread to the world is that European Jews are not Semites. They have nothing to do with Semitism," he said. "As for the Eastern Jews, they are Semites," he added, referring to Sephardic Jews from the wider Middle East.

The president previously caused an international furore for making similar suggestions in 2018, during what he described as "a history lesson" at a rare gathering of the Palestinian National Council.

His aim on such occasions is to dispute the connection between the Jewish people and modern-day Israel. Rights to the land lie at the core of the Israel-Palestinian conflict and are entwined with the historical narratives of both peoples.

Abbas is correct here.

After WW1 the Germans realised their Jewish Zionist citizens sold them out because of wanting to take over Palestine. Because they had the funds/money banking etc they started to control western nations, promising to get USA to intervene if Britain gave them Palestine.

What Germans and Israeli will never tell anyone is Jews are allowed to charge interest but not against fellow Jews. Is this not racist?
