So its happened - guess the writing was on the wall for a while and now Man U supporters and management will go through an agonizing period where they will scratch their heads to find out who will actually be the best fit for this role!

So who do you think should do this role?

A interim will be appointed to the end of the season. I would like one of

Ralf ragniek
Luis Enrique
Zidanne

To be the next permanent manager.

Carrick will get the job despite him being a poor coach with no management experience. He will go on a run of one win and the Glazers will give him a 5 year contract as reward.

Manchester United: Mauricio Pochettino top target to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dismissed in the wake of Man Utd's 4-1 defeat at Watford; Michael Carrick in charge while United look for an interim boss until the end of the season; Erik ten Hag United's second choice after Pochettino.

Mauricio Pochettino is Manchester United's first choice to take over as the club's manager next summer.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday and have put Michael Carrick in temporary charge while opening the search for an interim manager until the end of the season.
Former Tottenham boss Pochettino is currently in charge at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentinian guided Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019 but was dismissed in November of that year following a plunge in form.

"I think Mauricio Pochettino - although he'd never say it - would leave to come to Man Utd on a five-year deal tomorrow," predicted Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville. "He'd look at that group of players, he'd look at the club and he'd realise he'd probably be able to achieve more than he wants at Man Utd in terms of a project.

"At PSG you are on season by season, 'you've got to win the Champions League or you're out'- type of model. I don't think that suits Pochettino. I think he would absolutely come to Man Utd on a five-year deal, with backing behind him."

Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag is understood to be United's second choice for the role of Solskjaer's long-term successor.

Sky Sports News has been told Erik Ten Hag would "100% be interested in the job" in the summer.

Former Manchester United defender Neville has insisted the club are right to delay appointing Solskjaer's replacement.

"Absolutely they should wait," said Neville. "There's been no one available in the last three or four weeks when this has come to a head that you could have given a three-and-a-half-year contract to.

"I've got no doubt about Antonio Conte's quality as a manager, but this club wouldn't appoint him. Man City wouldn't appoint him. They wouldn't appoint Jose Mourinho. Man Utd have had that experience of appointing what would be a 'hit job' manager and they're not going to do it. He was never going to be appointed.

"They have to make sure they get the next one right, if that means being patient for six months to wait for managers to become available at the end of the season."

I think if they can get Steve Bruce in till the end of the season it could be a surprise bonus...I saw him watching the T20, looking very flush and relaxed...

Looks like they are after an interim manager until the end of the season as they have nobody lined up.

This after giving Ole a long term contract.

What a mess!

What a mess it is. Carrick is the manager now, and then they will appoint an interim till the end of the season and then a full time manager. What a bloody mess this club is. No strategy, no vision, no long term planning.

I personally want one of Zidane, Ten Hag or Poch, but I'll take anyone as long as it isn't some ex United player who played under Fergie. So that means, no Carrick, Fletcher, Bruce, Giggs, Keane, Rooney, etc. These ex United players are absolute incompetent as managers.

Zinedine Zidane not interested in Man Utd approach to become new manager

Manchester United have approached Zinedine Zidane about becoming their manager but, according to sources close to the former Real Madrid boss, he is not interested in going to Old Trafford at this point.

Ole Gunnar Soskjaer was sacked by United on Sunday after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Watford.

Zidane ended his second spell as Real manager in May this year.

He won three consecutive Champions League titles with the club from 2016.

After leaving in 2018, he returned a year later and won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup in 2020.

The same sources have said legendary former France and Real midfielder Zidane, who is out of work, would not be keen on a move to United right now.

He has been linked with the French national side and Paris St-Germain, and would prefer to consider those options when or if they become available.

Mauricio Pochettino, who has regularly been spoken of as a future United boss, is the current manager of PSG, who have full confidence in the Argentine and have made no movements to replace him with Zidane.

Mauricio Pochettino is open to becoming Manchester United manager and it is not out of the question they could get the Paris St-Germain boss now.

The Argentine is held in high regard at Old Trafford but there was a feeling it might be difficult to prise him away from PSG mid-season.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday and said they were looking to appoint an interim manager.

But Pochettino's potential availability could change that.

It is not thought United have made an approach yet but the 49-year-old is less than completely happy with the setup at PSG, where his role is essentially that of first-team coach, with all broader club and footballing issues handled by sporting director Leonardo.

Pochettino enjoyed more control during his five years in charge of Tottenham and is known to be keen on a return to the Premier League.

He has never made any secret of the fact he would like to manage in the English game again and while he is living in a hotel in Paris, his family remain in London. That travel element is not thought to be a hugely significant factor though, given it is as easy to get to the capital from Paris as it is from Manchester.

The former Southampton boss has been in charge of PSG for 10 months and this season they are 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 after 14 games and a point behind Manchester City in their Champions League group. Indeed, Pochettino will be in Manchester this week for his team's game against the Premier League champions.

Part of his unhappiness in Paris is around the culture of the club. His team includes superstars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar but the squad is unbalanced. There is a surplus of left-backs, for example, and there was a feeling they did not need to sign Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.

Those recruitment decisions are out of Pochettino's hands since, on transfers, he is essentially an advisor to Leonardo.

After taking charge at Parc des Princes in January, Pochettino endured a difficult first season as he attempted to overcome the long-standing criticism of him - that he has not won major trophies.

He lifted the Trophee des Champions - the French equivalent of the Community Shield - within days of taking over and went on to win the French Cup in May.

But PSG failed to win the Ligue 1 title for only the second time in nine seasons, finishing a point behind Lille, and were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester City in the semi-finals.

Pochettino is reluctant to force a move mid-season but a switch to Old Trafford could work for both parties, since the Qatari owners of PSG are known to be keen admirers of Zinedine Zidane, the former Real Madrid manager who is out of work.

There are other possibilities for United, though.

They are also known to admire Ajax's Erik Ten Hag but it is believed he would be unwilling to leave the club in mid-season. Leicester's Brendan Rodgers also has his admirers.

If United do go for an interim appointment, their former France defender Laurent Blanc has been mentioned as a potential candidate. He has not had a job in Europe since 2016 and is working in Qatar.

It has also been suggested former United skipper Steve Bruce would be interested in the short-term role following his exit from Newcastle.

He obviously won’t openly speak about a move. It would be disrespectful on the eve of a champions league match which is he’s priority.

Manchester United have contacted former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde about the role of interim manager.

Valverde, 57, is one of a handful of potential candidates to take charge until the end of the season before United hire a permanent manager.

United are focusing on an interim boss to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They feel recruiting Paris St-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino immediately may not be as straightforward as has been suggested.

Former Tottenham manager Pochettino said on Tuesday he was "so happy" at PSG and that he will not be distracted by links to the United job.

Valverde fits the template of an experienced coach who may not expect to get the job on a permanent basis after the stint as interim manager.

The Spaniard's last managerial role was with Barcelona, whom he guided to successive La Liga titles and the 2018 Copa del Rey before being sacked in January 2020.

He also won the Greek title on three occasions with Olympiakos and had successful spells in charge of Espanyol, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao, whom he managed for more than 300 games across two spells.

Valverde has had no direct involvement in the English game but does speak the language.

United feel an experienced interim manager, likely working alongside current coaches including Michael Carrick, who took charge for Tuesday's Champions League win against Villarreal, will bring stability and the space to have a comprehensive assessment of the managerial situation.

This idea of appointing an interim manager for the season while waiting for the summer for a proper appointment is a bit strange to me. It is essentially throwing away most of a season with a squad that isn't exactly young.

Players such as Varane, Maguire, De Gea, Ronaldo etc aren't at a stage of career to waste 2/3 of a season for a future rebuild in the summer. They should look to lure a serious manager now like Pochettino and make use of the elite players they have while before they decline.

Ernesto Valverde: Man Utd hold initial talks with former Barcelona boss as they search for interim manager

Manchester United have held initial talks with Ernesto Valverde as they continue their search for an interim manager to take charge until the end of the season.

Valverde is one of a number of potential candidates to have spoken with United, and it is understood other prominent managers are in the frame for the role.

United are conducting a thorough process to appoint an interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week, before beginning their search for a permanent successor.

The club are planning to make a permanent appointment at the end of the season and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is their first choice, with Ajax head coach Erik Ten Hag also in their thinking.

United are not ruling out the possibility of making a mid-season move for a permanent manger - even if they appoint an interim beforehand.

It is understood the former Tottenham boss would be interested in moving to Old Trafford, though Pochettino said on Monday he is "so happy" at PSG and will not allow United's interest to distract him from his current role.

Pochettino joined PSG in January and is contracted to the Ligue 1 club until the summer of 2023.

There are a number of high-calibre people United would consider longer-term if available.

The club want to take time to get the right person long term - with the interim seen as someone who can quickly bring stability and momentum for the rest of this season.

Valverde has been out of work since being sacked by Barcelona - who were top of La Liga at the time - in January 2020.

The 57-year-old won two Spanish titles and the Copa del Rey during his two-and-a-half-year spell at the Nou Camp, while he is also a three-time Greek champion from his time with Olympiakos.

Valverde has also managed Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal, Valencia and Espanyol, who he took to the UEFA Cup final in 2007.

United are also interested in Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag, who sources have said would be "100 per cent interested" in replacing Solskjaer.

Brendan Rodgers is another name to have been linked with the United job, although the former Liverpool boss attempted to distance himself from those reports on Wednesday.

Rodgers, who has been in charge of Leicester since February 2019, said: "My commitment is to this club and this team. It's about the development of the players we have.

"The speculation doesn't cross my mind. I respect you [reporters] have questions to ask. It doesn't include me."

Manchester United are close to appointing Ralf Rangnick as interim manager on a six-month contract.

The 63-year-old German is poised to join United but will not be in charge this weekend against Chelsea while he waits for his work permit.

United have agreed terms with Rangnick, but not with Lokomotiv Moscow, where he is the head of sports and development.

It comes after United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday following a trophyless three-year spell as boss.

Rangnick won the German Cup with Schalke in 2011 and took RB Leipzig to the final in 2019.

During the 2010-11 season he guided Schalke to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they lost 6-1 on aggregate to United, who were then beaten by Barcelona in the final.

United are eighth in the Premier League and Solskjaer, who scored the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final for the club, was dismissed following an embarrassing 4-1 loss at Watford on Saturday.

Since then, caretaker Michael Carrick, Solskjaer's assistant, took charge of United on Tuesday for the 2-0 win at Villarreal, a result that ensured they would finish top of their Champions League group.

Rangnick has built an impressive coaching reputation during his time in Germany, chiefly through spells at Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig.

He was subsequently in charge of the Red Bull group of clubs and his current club Lokomotiv have a Europa League game against Lazio this evening and United are mindful of not disturbing their preparation.

Rangnick impressed during an initial conversation with United officials earlier this week.

However, he has held further discussions about his role beyond the end of the season.

Senior United figures believe Rangnick's expertise will be invaluable from a technical and structural perspective.

The move backs up the Old Trafford outfit's view that bringing in an interim manager to the end of the season will provide them with space to assess the managerial situation properly.

Mauricio Pochettino is known to be interested in the United job but the Premier League club are wary of getting into protracted discussions with PSG that could drag on for longer than they want.

It is understood Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Sunday's game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ralk will probably take one of the director roles, theres absolutely no chance he signs for us with glazers running the show.

Ralf is only here to replace Woodward and will take over footballing matters,
like i mentioned before, the glazers have learnt there lesson and moved away from decision making when they bought john murtough and woodward decided to step down.

The combo of John murtagh sporting director, and Darren Fletcher, technical director does not sit well with me. Once Ralf moves up as the sporting director the hope is he cleans out the mess.

Imagine calling Conte and Zidane overrated. But then again you stan Ole, so I am not surprised. Zidane and Conte, especially the later are serial winners, while your hero Ole is a serial loser. I bet you must have been sad when Ole got sacked.

And it’s funny how you are saying if Carrick does well, he should get the job. He is even worse than Ole. He should have been sacked along with Ole. Thank god, glazers did something right for once and got in Ralf Ragnick, otherwise we would have been stuck with Ole 2.0 in Carrick.

Now that Conte has jumped ship and Zidane turned you down..they are ‘overrated’. Hilarious!

If he really is a top manager..why disrespect him buly appointing him as a interim?

He is one of the greatest thinkers of the last 20-30 years. Klopp, Tuchel etc are all inspired by him. Ragnick isn’t one for managing long term. He manages for a short time then goes upstairs. That is exactly what he will do at United and we need someone at the top who understands football, as glazers and Ed Woodward don’t know a thing about football.

Ralf Rangnick: Jurgen Klopp says Manchester United interest 'not good news for other teams'
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says that "unfortunately a good coach is coming to England" if Manchester United agree a deal with Ralf Rangnick.

Liverpool's arch-rivals are set to appoint the German, 63, as interim manager on a six-month contract.

Klopp is one of the younger German coaches who looked up to Rangnick and they faced each other as rival bosses.

"United will be organised on the pitch," said Klopp, 54. "That's not good news for other teams."

Rangnick set Ulm on course to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time before spells in charge of Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim, Schalke and RB Leipzig.

He has also served as director of football of the Red Bull group of clubs and is currently manager of sports and development for Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow.

United are sorting out the final details of Rangnick's move, which will see him switch to a two-year consultancy at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

What can Man Utd expect from Rangnick?
Listen - Euro Leagues: Un-wreck it Ralf

"He's a really good man and an outstanding coach," added Klopp. "He's a really experienced manager and famously built two clubs from nowhere to proper forces in Germany - Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

"He's done a lot of different jobs in football, but his first concern was always being a coach, being a manager, and that's what his best skill is."Michael Carrick will remain in charge of United for Sunday's Premier League trip to Chelsea, and although Rangnick will not be at Stamford Bridge, it is thought he will be in the dugout for Thursday's Premier League game at home to Arsenal.

Klopp, the ex-Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss, said: "Between the coaches and in the football world in Germany, he is very highly regarded and rightly so. Wherever he was, he did an incredible job.

"He started as a young man at Stuttgart, coaching the reserve team, and kept going from there. Ulm getting to the Bundesliga was insane at the time, and he made his way up.

"We faced each other for the first time when I was a young coach and he was at Hannover. He might have forgotten, but they always played our opponent a week later so he called me, the young manager of Mainz and asked plenty of questions.

"I was happy big Ralf Rangnick was calling me, but he got all the information he needed. Then they got promoted (in 2002) and we didn't, so he still owes me!"

Chelsea's German boss Thomas Tuchel, 48, played under Rangnick at Ulm and managed both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund after Klopp.

"He helped me a lot," Tuchel said of Rangnick. "He was my coach and one of the main figures to convince me to try coaching so he had a huge influence on all of us at that time. He showed us it's not important to follow people to the toilet in football games because that was the belief."

ive called them over rated for years, conte is a park the bus defensive manager who succeeds as an under dog - i even called those MU fans deluded for wanting him, when they would have been the first call for his sacking after beinging fed up with his antics and defensive methods, for zidane i have always prayed and hoped he didnt come here from the first day he was linked with us during the mourinho era, he is an old school man manager who cant communicate in english.
Btw. no he never turned us down, same basless reports that linked us to conte.

you rate martial as one of the best and brandon williams, so we can go on.

your just putting words in my mouth now, i never said carrick should get the job, he doesnt even have his coaching badges and a fifa licence

Yes i was sad with oles sacking, he was a top manager that against the odds came third then second in one of the most toughest seasons in epl and gave us our best football post fergie, it was unfortunate he collapased this season but will leave us in a good condition unlike your hero jose.

Of course I rate Martial. I rate all technical players. I was wrong about Williams. You rate Maguire, and Shaw who is even worse. You had the audacity to say Maguire is as good as VVD lol.

Lol at Ole being a top manager. He won't get another job in any top European league. He won't get a job in the championship. Maybe his mate Gary will hire him at Salford. That is his level. And just lol at the best football since Fergie. We played the worst football in the league. Ole had no style of play. He tried to park the bus every match with two DMs and even then we conceded goals, because he is a rubbish coach who couldn't coach anyone. He relied on individual brilliance from great attacking players. One match, Ronaldo will score a last minute winner, next match Bruno will do something magical, next match Pogba will smash it in from 25 yards with his left football, next match Greenwood will cut inside and score top bins, next match De Gea will save a last minute penalty. That is how the fraud survived for three years. Individual brilliance.

Go and watch the 99 final. That will cheer you up or make you even more sad lol.

Conte & Zidane >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ole

There is potential for a good ongoing discussion here gents, let’s keep it civil please.

Ralf Rangnick to Manchester United: Paul Merson unconvinced German coach has experience required for Old Trafford success

Paul Merson has questioned whether Ralf Rangnick's track record makes him the right person to turn around Manchester United's fortunes.

Michael Carrick is currently coaching the team following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking last Sunday but Rangnick is set to be appointed as interim manager. The plan would then be for him to move into a consultancy role at the end of the season, when United intend to bring in a long-term boss.

However, despite Rangnick's highly respected reputation in the game as an intensive coach who has overseen the rise of clubs such as Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig through the German leagues, Sky Sports pundit Merson believes the challenge at United is different to anything he's faced before and won't be easy.

"Why do they need an interim manager? Because they don't know what they're doing at the moment, in my opinion," Merson told Soccer Saturday.

"Ole would have been at the club still today if it wasn't for two goals in the last minute at Watford. I don't think there was any plan. They didn't think in their wildest dreams it was going to end up like that at Watford. At 2-1, I think he's still in charge come Sunday. I think they were going to keep it going as long as they could.

"Now, to bring in a manager… I'm hearing people going how great he is - but he's never managed in England, he's never managed one of the top teams in the world. Why is that? Why has no one else come in for him when managers have been up?

"I hear great things about him, people saying he's going to press and he's hard working and he's turned lesser teams into real contenders. But that's a lot different, getting a Schalke or a Hoffenheim to a certain stage.

"When you're asked to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and they already have superstars and you've got to make them play… it's all right at Schalke and Hoffenheim because they're going to listen and they want to get there. These [United] players are there and you have got to get them to go again.

"I think this is going to be difficult, this is going to be a lot harder than what people think.

"What I'm hearing is it's like a gimme, he'll come in and that will be it. That Man Utd are lucky. I'm not sure about that."

Merson added that the recent performances of the United players during defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Watford would make coaching them a tough job for any manager.

"Man City was embarrassing," he said. "Liverpool was bad but it wasn't as bad as Man City, and then Watford was an absolute joke.

"At the end of the day, we can all say 'Solskjaer, Solskjaer' but it's the players who cross the line, they have to turn up and play the game.

"You could have Pep Guardiola on the bench sitting next to Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel but, if the players aren't running around, it doesn't matter what you're doing on the bench."

^ Paul Merson talking nonsense as per usual. He is a typical Englishman who hasn't watched a game of European football and thinks premier league is the greatest thing since slice bread. The fool needs to keep his mouth shut.

Very surprised at the decision to appoint Rangnick as interim as it is a decision that shows some competence. I'm more happy about him moving upstairs at the end of the season as that is what is needed at the club - a clear direction.

I am intrigued to see how Rangnick does, mainly because (as a manager myself...albeit not a football manager!) I think this "it's not the manager's fault, it's the players" narrative that has been getting peddled is mostly nonsense. If you have a good leader, in any field, your team succeeds relative to expectations.... end of.

Genius Carrick playing a 7-1-2 vs Chelsea today. Ronaldo on the bench.

Genius Carrick playing a 7-1-2 vs Chelsea today. Ronaldo on the bench.

It's obvious that Ole wasn't the only problem. It was team of Ole, Phelan, Carrick and McKenna that were managing United, not just Ole. And according to Ole, coaching was done by Carrick and McKenna. Yet the genius board sacked Ole but didn't sack inept Carrick and now he is in charge. Playing a midfield 3 of Matic, McTomminay & Fred. Where is the creativity?

It's usually fools like Roy Keane who say nonsense like that. Roy wants to protect his mate Ole. Roy is also very old school. He still thinks it's acceptable for players to go round kicking people which is what he used to do in his day. People like him are all about passion. They don't understand tactics and coaching, which is why Keane was such a rubbish manager.

Martial? technical, ROLF

Shaw was the best LB in the league last season and in the euros, you think hes bad is because you dont know anything about football, and again i said maguire at leic was better then VVD at southampton before there big switches, comprehension issues?

You thinking ole wont get another job is like you saying ole can never get top 4, as for the nonsense about individual brilliance, you dont come 3rd and 2nd in the toughest league in the world based on individual brilliance and no gameplan, only a fool can state that, he was rather let down by individuals way to often, when his gameplan did stick we played flawless football like during his caretaker period, post lockdown and midseason last season. Your clearly someone who doesnt watch live football macthes and reads the back pages of tabloids and the only football you see comes from MOTD, It wont be long till start trashing ralf either and call for his sacking.

As for playing with two dms, he played what was availble to him, he tried pogba as a CM, it didnt work, dont be suprised when ralf plays two dms with mctominay and fred.

<b>BBC: Ralf Rangnick: You cannot turn Man Utd down, says new interim manager.</b>

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick says "you cannot possibly turn Manchester United down" and has not ruled out staying on as manager beyond his initial six months in charge.

Ralf Rangnick: Manchester United interim manager says role at world's 'biggest club' was too good to turn down

Ralf Rangnick says he "could not have possibly turned down" the chance to become the interim manager at Manchester United and he is open to staying on in the role beyond the end of the season.

Rangnick has begun his role as Manchester United's new interim manager for the remainder of the campaign after his work permit and necessary paperwork were approved.

He will meet the players ahead of a training session on Friday afternoon as they undergo preparations for Sunday's game at home against Crystal Palace.

The 63-year-old watched on at Old Trafford on Thursday night as a Bruno Fernandes goal and a double from Cristiano Ronaldo saw off Arsenal in a 3-2 win. United's second win in three games constituted an upturn in form under departed caretaker boss Michael Carrick, following the poor run which culminated in the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In his first press conference as United boss ahead of his maiden game in charge, Rangnick outlined his short and long-term objectives at the club, with his initial priorities being to address their defensive record and close the gap on Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the table.

The German wants to create a more balanced squad to help United compete with their Premier League rivals.

Rangnick said: "We are talking about six and a half months, so we only have had one third of all the games played, and we have agreed on a two-year advisory role after those six and a half months. If a club like Manchester United contacts you for such a role, you cannot possibly turn it down.

"It is one of the biggest clubs, if not the biggest club in the world. It is a big challenge, but I am more than happy to work with this group of players.

"I mean obviously I have watched the latest games, I also watched, out of interest, the games against Liverpool and Manchester City, so I am pretty well acquainted with what is going on at the club.

"The major target for me is just to bring more balance to the team. We conceded two goals yesterday and if you look at the total number of goals conceded, it is on average of two a game.

"That is just too much. Those are not the kind of games you need every day. In football to me, it's to minimise the coincidence factor.

"It's about winning games and, in the end, I'm very ambitious. We want to make the most successful season that is possible. Right now, we have to be realistic. The difference between us and the top three is big. But let's see."

<b>Ragnick claims Manchester United board blocked him from buying</b>

Ralf Rangnick has claimed Manchester United's board rejected his recommendation to sign a striker in January in a move which may have cost them Champions League football next season.

The interim manager said he told the club they should seek reinforcements in the final days of the January transfer window, with Mason Greenwood indefinitely suspended on January 30 following rape allegations, Edinson Cavani suffering with injury and Anthony Martial having left for Sevilla on loan.

"I was informed about the issue around Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial had already left, and then I was aware that within four days we had some strikers missing and that it might make sense (to buy)," Rangnick said.

"We were still in three competitions – the FA Cup, the Champions League, at the time we were fourth in the league…

"I spoke to the board and told them, 'Shouldn't we at least speak and analyse and find if we can at least get a player, on loan or a permanent deal?'

"In the end the answer was no. The answer was no, maybe they didn't want to do any winter (business). It doesn't matter, the answer was no."

Rangnick indicated United's scouting department felt there were no suitable players on the market that might be available. Last month, United announced chief scout Jim Lawlor and global head of scouting Marcel Bout were leaving the club.

Though time would have been limited for United, Rangnick pointed to deals in the final days of the window that took Luis Diaz from Porto to Liverpool, Julian Alvarez to Manchester City from River Plate, and Dusan Vlahovic to Juventus from Fiorentina.

Those deals were agreed prior to Greenwood's suspension, but with Martial already having left and Cavani away on international duty – since when he has made only four United appearances including one start.

Asked if they would have been realistic targets, Rangnick said: "I don't know. But as I said, maybe we should have at least internally discussed it. It might be necessary and important…

"I still believe we should have at least tried. If we would have found and been able within 48 hours (to sign a player), it would have been short notice but still, 48 hours is 48 hours. It might have been at least worth to try and internally discuss it. We didn't. It was not done."

United sat fourth after Marcus Rashford's stoppage-time goal earned a 1-0 win over West Ham on January 22 but go into their penultimate fixture at Brighton on Saturday with top-four hopes effectively over, sixth in the table and five points behind an Arsenal side who have two games in hand.

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag will take over at Old Trafford this summer with Rangnick, who has agreed to become Austria's coach, continuing in a consultancy role.

The German, who took over in late November after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking, insisted United improved early in his tenure but said the loss of Greenwood - who remains on bail over allegations he raped and assaulted a young woman – plus Martial's exit and Cavani's injury woes, changed the dynamic.

"Obviously there were some problems that the team already had at the end of November and the first couple of months, at least until the end of January, we were improving," Rangnick said, adding that his side had conceded fewer goals and increased their points-per-game ratio.

"Then in that international break we lost, including Edinson Cavani, three players long-term. We lost them, three strikers. Then we had problems to score goals and find our balance. This is what happened."

Neither Rashford nor Cavani have scored since that win over West Ham, when Cavani set up the England striker's late winner.

Greenwood scored six goals before his suspension, still more than Rashford (five) or Cavani (two) have managed this term. Rashford is due to miss Saturday's match with bronchitis.
