Om Puri dead: He passed away after a massive heart attack early on Friday morning.

Veteran actor Om Puri has passed away after a massive heart attack early on Friday morning. The actor was 66.

Confirming the news to indianexpress.com, filmmaker Ashok Pandit — a close friend of Puri — said,”Omji suffered from a massive heart attack in the morning today. We have just reached his residence.”

He also took to Twitter to share the news, “Sad & shocked to know that versatile actor Om Puri jee has expired due to heart attack early morning today. #RIP.”

The actor has appeared in mainstream Bollywood cinema as well as Pakistani, British and Hollywood films. The actor has received an OBE as well as Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India.

An alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India as well as National School of Drama, Puri was on the forefront of what was called art films movement in the 70s. He has worked in acclaimed films such as Bhavni Bhavai (1980), Sadgati (1981), Ardh Satya (1982), Mirch Masala (1986) and Dharavi (1992).

Shocking!!!! RIP his voice and dialogue delivery were remarkable.

My favourite Bollywood personality in recent times. Sir you will be deeply missed.

Inna lillahi wa inna illahi raji'oon

This came across as a shock!!!! Cant believe it. RIP.

Some terrible comments on social media, not even sparing the man in his death,we have truly gone down as a society if this is how people are sprouting their opinions nowadays.

Anyhow probably watch his older movies just for the nostalgia, can't believe why some theater actors die so early first Amrish Puri and now him.

RIP, he was a peace loving man and a good actor. People will miss him for sure.

Exactly what i was thinking. He wasn't that old. A big loss.

RIP, one of my all time favorite actor from Bollywood. Sad to hear the new.

66 is no age to die although he didn't exactly lead the most healthiest of lifestyles.

Nonetheless, RIP. I'll always remember him for East is East.

Haven't seen much of his films but know he's a very good actor.

RIP.

What an incredibly sad news! Shocking.

What an amazingly firm and solid voice he´d and how good he was in whatever role he was given. I´d always rated him very highly and was a fan of him. One of my all-time favourites. From amongst those who don´t perform in the lead role, Irrfan Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and him are really great actors.

RIP

A fine actor and I loved his comedy acting.

A sane voice of peace in lots of insanity.

Yes. And A legendary actor who had tremendous work behind him.

Ah thanks. I saw a show where Arnab Goswami and others were really going tough on him and he looked very stressed and under preassure.

Social media is best put on ignore other than from genuine family or friends in my view.

Om Puri was one of the true Bollywood legends and that is why his talent found fame across continents. He'll be missed.

Legendary actor. Just watched maqbool a few days ago. He & Naseer were fabulous as cops in that movie

Is it the same man who were grilled in Indian media for supporting Pakistani actors?

IIRC, he got grilled by Arnab Goswami for criticizing the Indian Army, not for supporting Pak actors. He later apologized.

In any case, RIP. He was an excellent actor. Even played Zia Ul Haq in Charlie Wilson's War.

Bollywood is such a superficial and pretentious industry. Today we have every other director and actor under the sun praising Puri (and rightly so) yet there is no way a young Om Puri would make it in Bollywood today because it's an enterprise which favours looks over talent.

Why would anyone make terrible comments? really poor stuff if true

RIP..

Very sad news..

also many Indians on social media are mocking his death ..

This is so true. Its all glitz and glamour no soul left. Even the blockbusters in the 50-60-70s had a soul even with their predictable story line. Enjoyed his Tv performances as much as his movies - Tamas, Kirdaar, Bharat Ek Khoj (his voice, swoon).

It's because an Indian news anchor questioned him why was he acting in Pakistani films when Indian army is suffering loses at the border to which he replied no one forces anyone to join the army which is a brutal truth but obviously very insensitive for those chest thumping nationalistic Indians. He became a target for the BJP media and their supporters after that, and even shamefully after his death he's stilll being mocked.

He was a very fine actor. RIP.

He only got grilled by Goswami later. He was criticised by another Indian news anchor first who questioned him why he was working with Pak actors and their film industry.

The stress of all the idiots like Arnab, that Hindi channel anchor and the bhakts finally got under a body already weakened by heavy drinking.

It would be insensitive for anyone. Imagine Pakistan dragging India to the UN over increased casualties at LOC only to get a reply .. "No one forced your martyrs to join the army".

Yes this is a sad loss, but it doesn't automatically imply that Puri wasn't at fault there.

He did make some insensitive remarks for which he apologized as well, but people are so cruel in someone's death they aren't able to think good just because someone 'said' something but not remember a legacy of work he left behind.

He will be terribly missed not like bollywood has many actors with such voice and acting skills remaining as well.

My parents made me watch a lot of "parallel-cinema" of 80's which is what i grew up on and he was probably a big part in those movies, also I could relate to his brand of voice-acting as he is like my many old Punjabi uncles of mine with face and voice that moved to India after partition.

RIP,
wasn't 66 btw, seemed older.
a person who used to be very judgmental whenever asked to talk on the on-border relations.

It´s a another thing to praise someone´s work and achievements after his death, which is fine of course, but it is a fact that whenever I discuss films with any of my friends, Om Puri used to get an instant mention. I loved his voice! I´ve been a fan of him right from my childhood, ever since watching 'Gupt' (1997) back in those days.

I didn´t know that he´s a Punjabi and has worked in their industry too. A couple of years ago I watched 'Bhaji in Problem' (2013) and absolutely loved his acting there too. It was a hilarious film!

RIP was one of the finest actors from sub continent.. may he rest in peace..

Regarding his comments IIRC he was supporting Salman's views on Pakistani actors in India which were absolutely correct views and was ganged up by anchor and other guests on the so-called debate, he seemed visibily under pressure and stressed out and started blabbering and then in the moment he passed that insensitive comment about the army officers.. After that the media got a masala news and he was heckled mercilessly in half the interview he seemed to be high or lost it mentally.. His PR guys/manager if he has them should have never allowed him to go on debates.. those th debates are not for the light hearted..

Blame Bollywood all you want but they put money where the people are at.

Would people turn out the way they did for Sultan if it was played by Nawazuddin and not Salman?

Bollywood is pretentious and superficial but thats the content people want.
