Next day entire school was talking about this match, unfortunately some thought it was impossible to chase 320 odd after Sachin got out and turned off their TV's :D

It was a turning point wrt Indian ODI team as we truly believed that team is not just about Sachin and there are other match winners.

What a day it was. people here was celebrated crazily after this win as like they win WC!

Still remembered the day switched of my TV only to see later India win it!

That last over still gives me goosebumps.

And the reaction of Ganguly between the deliveries in priceless :D

Only match N.Hussain scored a century, and this match will be remembered forever, but not his hundred :uakmal

Watched the match and remember it like it was yesterday.. Birth of new era for Indian cricket..

The lasting memory that is etched in my memory of this match is Dada removing his shirt and waving it from the Lord's balcony like a boss!:narine

Watched every single ball. Was quite a game, Ganguly waving his shirt from the balcony was obviously the highlight of the game.

Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh became stars overnight.

That was hilarious and good response to flintoff doing same thing months earlier.

So many great moments in this match. The irony is that was one of England's finest ODI batting performance in an era they were awful in limited overs. Trescothick was at his best here, he struck a brutal hundred that day, as did Nasser who famously pointed to the Media Centre upon reaching his hundred shouting "I bat at no. 3 !" along with a few expletives. This was as some journos were questioning his batting position.

But what a reply from India. Ganguly and Sehwag tore into England with one of the most savage opening stands I'd seen. However they soon wobbled. When Sachin got out the famous story from many Indian fans was that they switched off their TV. No Sachin = No Hope was the motto for many fans throughout the 90s.

However Ganguly had changed the mentality of the Indian team. He blooded some mentally tough fighters like Yuvraj and Kaif, who whilst not the most talented was a superb fielder and played a brilliant knock that day.

It summed England's era up in ODIs. Failing to take opportunities, failure to close out matches, failing to hold their nerve when it mattered.

For India, this was a turning point. Winning at Lord's, the home of cricket, chasing 325 in a tournament final was huge. It was the start of the golden generation for India in ODIs, a team that'd go on to share the 2002 Champions Trophy months later, reach the 2003 World Cup final and culminated with the 2011 World Cup under Dhoni.

Iconic series win.

2001 Aus series changed the way we played test cricket and our good run lasted till 2011.

2002 Natwest series changed the way we played ODI and our good run still continues.

not really

it was an average english team. This is a massive exaggeration.

In my opinion ganguly's taking off his shirt was a very ungentlemanly act

It was a reply to Flintoff who did the same in India months back. But yes, it could have been avoided. That win changed the mentality of India in ODIs.. Credit to Ganguly.. He instilled the much required confidence.

Yes this match served as the turning point for India in ODI cricket, but they also had the right ingredients to excel as an ODI team for the next decade.

You need these moments to inspire the players but you also need the right players to take advantage of it.

Pakistan had their moments in 2013, when they beat India in India and SA in SA, but they failed to capitalize on it because the team was rubbish and the players who won us those series turned out to be rubbish as well.

In Tests, Pakistan has had such a moment in the last few years, and they capitalized because it had the players, especially for Asian conditions.

The second Test of the England series in 2012 was the turning point for Pakistan in Test cricket, which enabled this sustained success.

We held SA 0-0 in 2010, but it was seen as an achievement and we were second best in that series. We also won the first Test against England, but it was seen as a bit of a fluke and one-off.

However, when we defended 150 odd and floored England for only 72 to win the series, that was the moment where the players got the belief that they could beat any team in the world in UAE, and that mentally carried on against Australia and England in the next couple of years.

Even if Pakistan fluke the ODI series in England this summer, one can be certain that they will be back to their usual self soon because the players simply don't have the quality.

It was a big game in the context of chasing 321 at that time (15 years ago). Few teams even struggle to chase 250 in modern era :misbah

And fans of such team should just stay quiet.

Didn't watch the game live but have seen the highlights many times and what a game it was! Brilliant innings from Yuvraj and Kaif. Ganguly taking his shirt off is a legendary moment for Indian fans!

Yup, remember the sound of the Lord's crowd going down a notch after that incident.

Him and Flintoff (his Lancastrian teammate) never really got on with each other.

Fantastic match. I remember switching of the set when India were 146/5 or thereabouts. Returned an hour later to see if the match had ended and was pleasantly surprised to see a partnership building but the mood sobered when Yuvi got out.

The best part was that our guys never gave up even after Yuvi's wicket with the likes of Bhajji striking hard blows and keeping up with required rate. Kaif was playing the innings of his career and the final moments were just goose bump stuff! Just amazing for an Indian fan. At that point India had two records - the highest run chase and the only team till that point that had chased two 300+ scores - the first being against Pakistan in Dhaka in 1998.

Dada just ran in pounced at Kaif embracing him while an emotional Yuvi was not far behind..all the while Kaif just coolly collected a stump and smiled. Great memories !

His shirt waving act was done to beget exactly that reaction.

Just a few months before, Flintoff had won a match for England against India squaring the series at 3-3, and went on to remove his shirt and frantically waved it at the Wankhede crowd to egg them on.

Ganguly was obviously irked by that action and so he gave the biggest *** for tat reactions of all to Flintoff that day at Lords. The actions that day meant much more at Lord's, which is widely considered the home of cricket and the sanctuary of the posh and affluent people at the MCC with their egg and bacon ties and all that. It almost symbolised a view that if you don't respect my crowd and stadium, I have no reason to respect yours, however pristine it may be.

Still remember that game!

What a chase it was and how the British press complained about Ganguly taking his shirt off at the Lord's balcony yet Flintoff had done the same in Mumbai when England won the ODI series there earlier!

Was one off the finest ODI games ever along with the India v Pakistan karachi 2004 game, 438 game and the 99 WC semifinal.

to be fair barring Gough and Flintoff this was an awful bowling attack and barring Dinest Mongia and to an extend Kaif Indian top 7 is superstar heavy I would call it a choke if they were not to chase this down on a road.

Have we ever chased 300+ outside India since this game?

Wasn't it ridiculous that Sachin was batting in the middle order in that tournament? Just a year after during the 2003 WC, he was all guns blazing as an opener but playing at Number 4 in this tournament just a year before, absolutely ridiculous.

Still remember. Was telling my dad that the game was over when Sachin got out.

When Yuvraj and Kaif got together, I thought these 2 newbies will not survive the pressure. Did not watch for like 30 minutes. Then walked into the living room to find these 2 still playing and scoring at a decent click.

Yuvraj and Kaif became overnight stars.

remember that game. trescothick smashing indian bowlers. Sehwag n ganguly starting on fire. Indias middle order collapse. the drunk fan heckling Sachin. yuvraj n kaifs great partnership. Yuvrajs distraughted faced after he got out thinking the game was gone.

in those days making 320 guaranteed you a win. And chasing 320 odd in the pre t20 era was a marvellous feat.

made kaif n yuvraj household names overnight.

The greatest Indian win at that time since 1983 WC win.

Eh? Not even close.

India's greatest ever ODI campaign till date has been the Benson and Hedges tournament in Australia in 1985. It was the perfect setting. Each Test playing nation participated. India played like a boss and *hammered* each and every opponent (not just won, but won comfortably). Took 49 out of 50 possible wickets (Pak somehow escaped with 9 down in the final). Beat Pak twice -- once in the RR and then in the final.

No flukey wins, no dependence on weather, no depending on winning the toss.

Shastri won the Champion of Champions award and the famous Audi scene ensued.

Imran Khan's face was worth looking at after the final. If he was near a bridge then, he'd have jumped in the river! :)

Having said all that, this win in 2002 was memorable too. Kaif and Yuvi played a fearless in-your-face brand of cricket. There was a lot of drama in this game. People have already spoken about Sourav taking his shirt off.

Hussain was under the gun from their media for his inability to bat in ODIs. He got a hundred in this game. After getting to hundred he made wild snarky gestures towards the media box.

Indian batting fell apart after a very strong start. But then the two youngsters took over. What a chase!

It was always fun to rub Hussain's nose in the dirt!

Tendulkar and Ganguly did that one more time in that series during the Leeds Test on the second afternoon when they hit the English bowling to all parts of park in one of the most audacious batting display in Test cricket. This was *after* the umpires had offered them the bad light! :)

An interesting recent discussion between Dravid, Agarkar and Kaif about this match.

THE turning point of Indian ODI cricket; they could chase with confidence and were no longer afraid to showcase any flare.
