This day also signalled the day when the world took notice of Darrell Hair as a twisted individual with a bias against Pakistan.

One of the best Things Inzimam did shame the team didn't use the new found equality to thier benefit!

I remember that day like it happened 5 minutes ago. Very courageous thing by Inzi to take a stand against racist Darrell Baal.

So did Billy Doctrove - why do people never mention his name?

I'm not saying the allegations were true - they were not as Pakistan were later cleared of the offence but why is Hair blamed so much whilst Doctrove is forgotten about? Is it because he isn't white?

I forget exact terminology but the senior umpire on field is head umpire and he has final say in such issues

That's incredible! I can hardly believe it has been over a decade already. Wonder what happened to the disgraced fat cop from Oz.

Was recently reading Mike Proctors memoirs and this incident has a chapter dedicated to it. He seems to imply that Darrel Hair loved controversy and was the cause of it with his piggish attitude towards the Pakistan team. Also relates to other incidents involving him.

Time for the yearly ode to Darrell Hair...

With Hair it was a history of racist bias against Asians. He was the one who branded Murali as a chucker by constantly giving no-balls of his deliveries.

Darrell Hair's behavior was deeply offensive. He was a man with a major attitude problem even acccording to many Englishmen like Geoffrey Boycott. Forever a racist attention seeker Darrell would probably have avoided this controversy had he known it would lead to the end of his umpiring career. I don't think he umpired many matches after the one at the Oval going the same way as Shaqoor Rana and David Constant. Once any team loses trust in an umpire it would be very difficult for the ICC to reinstate him. The game is healthier without cheats and a racist like the aforementioned umpires.

Incidentally the Test at the Oval was rain-hit, uneventful and slightly dull. It had passed almost entirely without incident before this infamous situation kicked off.

Far more controversial had been the prior match at Headingley that England had won, on paper by a large margin but really this would not have been possible without Darrell’s dismal umpiring on the first day. These were the days before DRS and he gave all of the England top order extra lives on marginal decisions, including Pietersen who went on to score a big hundred. Huge resentment and anger simmered in the Pakistan camp thereafter.

Without the match at Headingley, we may not have seen the Oval unfold as it did.

Darrell Hair was a poor umpire as well. Not a great combination.

Darrell Hair After cricket https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darrell_Hair

On 23 October 2017, Hair pleaded guilty to one charge of embezzlement and one charge of stealing in the Orange Local Court. The offences were committed as a result of a gambling addiction, with Hair stealing a total of $9005.75 (AUD). Given his early guilty plea, in addition to the fact that he had repaid the stolen money, Hair was sentenced to an 18-month good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded

I remember the day. We had given up on the match so just went to town with some relatives, then they started saying how the match had been forfeited etc and as I was just 7 years old at the time I was so confused and had no idea what anything meant or what was going on.

I never saw any evidence that he was racist. I think he was just heavy handed. The Kiwis had a problem with him too.

I’ve thought a lot about this. Eventually I think he was prevented by the ICC from umpiring any matches involving Asian teams.

Considering the fact that he was objectively a highly competent umpire - he had the 2nd best accuracy of decision percentage in the 2000s behind Taufel - and yet was often criticised for high profile errors, usually involving Asian teams, on the balance of probabilities and reading between the lines I think he usually knew precisely what he was doing.

And therefore he was probably a racist.

Darrell Hair was a disgrace - making the Test all about him and screwing thousands of fans out of a conclusion to a Test match.

There were at least two dozen Sky cameras at the ground and not one picked up any tampering. Yet Hair penalised a team for cheating without any proof.

Even after Inzamam's protest, both teams were willing to restart play but Hair refused to budge.

Trouble was brewing for a long time as Pakistan complained about him the previous winter against England yet he was still selected for our Tests. Throughout the 2006 series in England he made several decisions against us. Doctrove was useless too.

Doctrove was just incompetent, unlike Hair who was deviant.

Gul was getting reverse quite early though and I clearly remember Gul tampering while in his run up in new Zealand. Hair was probably right in that Pakistan were tampering but in the absence of evidence , they shouldn't have been penalised.

I was so glad that the team took a stand, Hair had been making one sided decisions all that year.....
The second umpire was new decided to go with the flow...
Really poor of the ICC not to continue the match with another umpire.

Gul was getting reverse quite early though and I clearly remember Gul tampering while in his run up in new Zealand. Hair was probably right in that Pakistan were tampering but in the absence of evidence , they shouldn't have been penalised.

Accusing anyone or any group without evidence is plain wrong.

Everyone is innocent until proven otherwise.

What lead to Hairs downfall was the emal that was leaked.

he demanded $500 000 for quiting, and after that everyone turned up agianst him.
Before the western blocked sided with him

I have a slightly different take, probably similar to Robert .

I think that Darrell Hair was an officious umpire, rather like those football referees who see themselves as being on a mission to clean up the game (but who interrupt play far too often). He reminds me of the Portugal v Holland "Battle of Nuremburg" at the 2006 World Cup.

That match wasn't even that dirty, but the Russian referee was on a mission , which led to 4 red cards (none of them straight reds) and 12 yellow cards.

Was Hair a racist? That depends upon how you set the bar for racism. He certainly considered western sporting and social values to be supreme, and was appalled by incidents like Shahid Afridi scuffing the pitch. He viewed Murali as a cheat who used a slight deformity as a pretext to chuck his team to victory.

But the thing is, I partly agree. My views on Afridi and Murali are the same as Hair's. I remember when Imran Khan humiliated his wicketkeeper Saleem Yousuf on the pitch for claiming a catch that he knew had bounced.

It's not so much a case of racism as a clash of cultures.

I consider Nasser Hussain or Mark Ramprakash or Jofra Archer to be highly civilized men whose values I can respect. I would say the same about Shan Masood.

But I consider that Pakistan was entirely to blame for the incident at The Oval, with Inzamam and Kamran Akmal in particular showing immense ignorance and displaying completely unacceptable behavior.

It was obvious that if these idiots did not take the pitch the game would be awarded to England, and rather than this being viewed as "a protest for justice" they would be viewed as cheats who took their bat and ball home when they got caught, and showed absolute contempt for people who had paid good money to attend the match that day.

Sure enough, that's exactly what happened.

It was fortunate that the eminently civilized Shaharyar Khan (you know, the Indian chap) managed to subsequently politely draw attention to Hair's own strutting and self-centered behavior.

But the real problem was Inzamam and Kamran Akmal. And I'm astonished that the PCB ever saw fit even to employ Inzamam to clean the toilets - I wouldn't have even given him that responsibility after his oafish failure of leadership forfeited a match that the team was going to win.

Inzamam-ul-Haq-led Pakistan team forfeited a Test match against England at the Oval in 2006, the first in 1814 Tests, and 129 years of cricket. The decision by the former Pakistan skipper came after his team was accused of ball-tampering and penalised for the same.

Recalling the episode, after almost 15 years, Inzamam in a video on his YouTube channel “Inzamam-ul-Haq – The Match Winner” stated that he took the decision for his country.

The match, which ended with Inzamam refusing to lead his side back on to the pitch after tea following a decision to award England five penalty runs for alleged ball-tampering, was called as a forfeit in England’s favour.

The ball-tampering decision against Pakistan was taken by umpire Darrell Hair, whom Inzamam also accused of being a little biased against the Pakistan cricket team.

Speaking about the incident, Inzamam said: “He felt that the ball was tampered and awarded five runs to the opposition. And as per ICC rules, it meant we were proved guilty of doing it.”

“So I went up to Darrell Hair and asked him what exactly was wrong with the ball.”

“As per ICC rule the umpire informs a player if he’s guilty before awarding those five runs. However, I was not informed.”

“Then I decided that I cannot lead a team like this and waited 15-20 minutes to show everyone the entire team protested against the decision.”

“Hair too refused to come out in the field and continue with the match.”

However, Inzamam did hint that he would have continued with the match had the third umpire stepped up if Hair refused to continue further.

“I feel that if Hair refused the third umpire should have continued with the match from there. But the umpires are selected by ICC for their events, so ICC backed him,” Inzamam said.

The former Pakistan batsman also mentioned the incidents when Hair’s decisions had cost the match to the team. The
then Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman had also written to the International Cricket Council a month before requesting them not select Hair for the series.

“Pakistan team were not happy with Daryl Haer officiating the matches then. The board chief had then written to ICC to look into the matter, a month before the series. However, Harper was the umipre in two-three matches.”

“I feel if the chairman of the board is writing to you then you must listen to its complaint,” Inzamam said.

Pointing out the controversial incidents while Hair was officiating matches involving Pakistan, Inzamam said, “During a match against England in Faisalabad, his decision on Salman Butt and Younis Khan were very controversial.”

“He had also adjudged me out, when a fielder threw the ball towards me and I used my bat for protection in another game. Since I was not present in my crease at that moment he had given me out.”

Whatever happened that day was not in the spirit of the game and that's all i have got to sah about that.

Honesty Integrity Respect

It's true 90s era were notorious for using nails, bottle caps and such.

However Sky's cameras can probably pick out even the hair on a player's skin. Yet to this day, there hasn't been any evidence that Pakistan tampered with the ball at The Oval in 2006.

Hair had used his prejudice of PK players to make up his mind without evidence. The Irony that his own Australia were also tampering must be so galling for a loser like him.

He was a cheat. If he was innocent he wouldn’t have sent that email to the ICC. The fact that the ICC did bring it to light but then go on to punish Pakistan shows that their intentions are not all clean neither.

Quite frankly, hair was a troll. All controversy followed him wherever he went.
The murali incident, the oval incident, the email etc

Looking back I’m glad Pakistan did what they did. good on you Inzi! Standing up to the disgraceful Hair was the best thing to do.

How we survived that period is a miracle. Every week there was a new drama.

I know eh!
How on earth we survived that period. Maybe I should make a separate thread on this, because that was probably the worst time for Pakistan cricket in their history. We had YK tantrums every year, we had ICL and players revolt, we had spot fixing/match fixing issues, problems from India, lack of cricket at home, and everyday outburst from Ijaz Butt. Holy Crap!!!!

Incredible day for Pakistan and world cricket.

This was the best thing Inzamam did for Pakistan (ok second best thing, World Cup was best thing) and asian cricket.

Truly brave and herioc.

Because of this Pakistan had a more equal playing field.... couldnt blame anyone else.... this bought other things in Pak cricket everyone knows existed into the foreground.

With neutral umpires and DRS much better playing field not perfect but nearly there now all we want is 100% effort every game and dodgy business.

Honrary mention for Rantunga he stood up for asian cricket as well when he supported Murali.

In a world where English and Australian umpires were considered the best even though they where as good and as bad as anyone else.......

People like Darrell Hair were disgrace to cricket. He should have been let go after Murali incident. I would put Mike Denness at no.2 in this regard to blatantly targeted Indian team and handed match suspension to 6 Indian players. I hope we will never see such officials involved in cricket.

This was a huge day in the history of cricket. Since Ovalgate, the level of improvement that has been seen across the globe in terms of umpiring standards has been immense.

Clearly the advent of the DRS has helped a great deal, but it is nevertheless only on occasion that an on-field umpiring decision will be entirely reversed. Significant errors in judgment have become quite uncommon. Even the return of home umpires during Covid has not particularly affected this positive upward trend.

I quite enjoy downloading & watching the highlight packages of old Test matches on Sky Sports, mainly from the 90s and early 00s. The clips of ATG players scoring runs and taking wickets are brilliant. But it is intriguing and at times frankly quite shocking to witness the sheer volume of umpiring mistakes and gross adjudication bias that the sport apparently used to absorb and tolerate. In the majority of Test matches there would be clear examples of batsmen doing nothing wrong and being given out, batters being stone-dead lbw or legitimately caught behind and staying in, bowlers getting shafted in general or conversely being gifted a handful of joke wickets, and the wrong calls being made when fielders claimed marginal catches.

One of the most distasteful episodes.

Inzi in his Saj's interview with Wisden said:

Aggro at The Oval

The Ovalgate incident in 2006 is another example of how things should not have transpired. Whilst I am glad that my team and I were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing and the 2 umpires from the game, Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove, suffered consequences of their actions, I am clear about the fact that such incidents only bring shame to cricket and can or should never be repeated. If I could go back in time, I would have handled the situation very differently as I am sure others involved that day would also. Things escalated very quickly largely due to poor communication and some misunderstandings but all round it was a bad day for cricket.

If Inzi had not reacted the way he did, we would still be seeing rampant bias against weaker countries and corrupt individuals like Hair walking away scott free!

Good on Inzi to take a stand!

Exactly. I'm proud of the way Inzamam and his boys handled things that day.

Australian and English umpires used to treat weaker countries badly and got away with it.I think some of the old umpires and cricket administrators were racist. It was a generation thing. The new crop of umpires. They are doing a good job.In the old days umpires did not travel to other countries. Now umpires from all countries stand in matches around the world which has helped.

The only good thing Inzi did in his cricketing career

Darrell Hair was perceived as being biased against Pakistan. Even Shaharyar Khan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, wrote a letter to the ICC requesting that Darrell Hair not be appointed as an umpire for Pakistan's matches.
Due to some of Darrell Hair's questionable decisions against the Pakistan team, Pakistan ended up losing matches as well.
