KARACHI:

The eighth death anniversary of former prime minster and Pakistan Peoples Party head Benazir Bhutto will be observed on Sunday (today) across the country.

The party has arranged Quran Khwani and Fateha in ever district, while the main event will be held in the Bhutto’s hometown Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.

Accoring to PPP officials, the day will start with Quran Khwani followed by langar or free food. After midday the main jalsa will start where PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto will address the party supporters. The party workers will observe two-minute silence at 5:20pm to pay homage to the martyred leader, followed by Fateha at 5:25pm.

After the jalsa, Bilawal will address the central executive committee meeting of PPP at Naudero House. According to party sources, the issue of the federal government’s meddling in Sindh affairs, in particular the special powers of Rangers, will come up during the meeting.

Meanwhile, caravans of PPP jiyalas continue arriving in Larkana, where at least 20 walk through gates have been installed for security purposes.

Moreover, an area of 3km the tombs of the Bhutto family has been declared a red zone and 22 police checkpoints have been set up to meet any untoward incident.

Condolences to the beautiful, wise and iconic daughter of the land. I remember that unfortunate day vividly. Our family was glued to the television that whole day. An absolute shame and a scar on Musharraf for not providing good enough security to Benazir. Pakistan lost a legit leader that day and got Zardari/Bilawal in inheritance.

Did the truth come out about her killers? Who got punished or is it still a mystery?

RIP

She was equally corrupt and an incompetent leader.

Not really. It was one the worst day in Pakistan's history considering the proceeding outcomes. Assassination of political leaders is not a hallmark of successful nations.

Yep, yet another dark day in Pakistan's history.

That period at the end of Mush's reign was one of the darkest chapters in Pakistan history with daily suicide bombings, political instability, economy going to hell and political assassinations.

Hated the corruption we saw under her watch and contrary to her "moderate" image propagated by the western media she actually helped the Taliban grow and eventually capture Kabul through arms and funding. Still she didn't deserve a demise like this. RIP.

Why can't the present government find the culprits?

present govt? PPP had his govt in federal for 5 years and sindh for last 8 years but wasn't able to find it or let say wasn't interested at all.

however one feels about her politics, she was a brave woman who meant a lot to many people.

RIP BB.

Keep this thread away from the Barelvis, they'll start celebrating her life and death and going on marches to signify it :|

As her death shows life is tenuous and no amount of money can save anyone when your time is up. An Oxford educated graduate should have been an asset for the country but sadly her time at the helm, to put mildly was mired in controversy. May Allah have mercy on her sole.

Am not sure but at that time Musharaff had announced a state of emergency but due to pressure he had to stop it and the moment he did the security weakened significantly. Zardari got her killed according to a freshpot uncle of mine

Lets not forget the people in Karachi and all over Sindh who lost their lives during the riots following the death of Benazir. More than 100 were killed, many robbed, public and private property worth million of rupees destroyed in a matter of few days.

I was in Karachi at that time, and those were some of the scariest moments of my life. Few people I know who were working in the out skirts of the city, like the factories in Port Qasim couldnt return home for days. There were reports of rapes as well. At that time we were hearing news of how a bus full of women who worked in a garments factory located in SITE industrial area were taken away by armed men.

The out pouring of grief and sympathy for PPP prevented even the media from pointing fingers at the emotional jiyalas, who at that time it seemed had the license to do anything they pleased. And as always no investigation was ever carried out.

Musharraf had already warned her to not come . She ignored it . Her own husband is involved in her murder .

This was more saddening than her murder .

The city was burning within minutes of her death as if certain people were ready with the tools needed to close down such a huge city .

Corrupt leaders deserves no sympathy.

The likes of Altaf, Zardari and Nawaz deserves the same fate.

How did it happen?

Ms Bhutto was attacked as she was leaving a rally of her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) supporters in the garrison town of Rawalpindi.

She was standing upright in the her armoured vehicle, with her head exposed above the open roof escape hatch, waving to the crowd when an attacker opened fire.

Seconds later, a bomb was set off at the scene which left some 20 other people dead.

The exact cause of Ms Bhutto's death is disputed.

UK police were asked by the Pakistani government to investigate the killing. They concluded she was killed as a result of the explosion.

Ms Bhutto's party has insisted it was the gunshots that killed her. They say they saw bullet wounds on her head while preparing her body for burial.

The British police report released on 8 February said the impact of the explosion forced Ms Bhutto's head to collide violently against the side of the escape hatch.

The report also said the attack was the work of one person, who first fired at Ms Bhutto's vehicle and then set off a suicide bomb.

Video footage of the attack aired on TV had led to speculation that Ms Bhutto had been targeted by two people, working as a team.

The British police said its work had been complicated by failures to conduct an autopsy or preserve evidence from the crime scene.

However, the team said "the evidence that is available is sufficient for reliable conclusions to be drawn".

Their report appears to support the government's view, announced days after the attack on Ms Bhutto, that she died as a result of head injuries rather than gunshot wounds.

At the time, the PPP described the government's verdict as "dangerous nonsense".

What was the impact of Ms Bhutto's death?

Ms Bhutto was the dominant figure in Pakistani politics.

She had twice served as prime minister and was hoping that the PPP would emerge as a major player in the 2007 election, the first to be held since President Pervez Musharraf resigned as head of the army and became a civilian leader.

Western-educated and charismatic, she presented herself as a moderate, democratic force.

She was widely courted in the West, where it was hoped she could restore popular legitimacy to President Musharraf's faltering campaign against Islamist militants.

Her only son Bilawal, 19 years old at the time of her death, was installed as the PPP's president.

He has remained a figurehead, and the party has been led by Ms Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who has served as president.

Ms Bhutto and Mr Musharraf had been working on a power-sharing agreement.

The talks failed, leaving Ms Bhutto as a major rival to President Musharraf, rather than an ally.

Who could have targeted her?

The government blamed the attack on Baitullah Mehsud, a pro-Taliban tribal leader in South Waziristan region, abutting the Afghan border.

The CIA supported this view.

But a spokesman for Mr Mehsud denied any involvement, calling the accusation "government propaganda".

Nevertheless, pro-Taliban and al-Qaeda militants who have taken control of Pakistan's tribal areas along the Afghan border have been linked by many analysts to the attack.

They made no secret of their determination to kill Ms Bhutto after her return to the country in October 2007 following years of self-imposed exile.

However, elements within Ms Bhutto's party believed her killing could not have taken place without the collusion of senior figures in the military and political establishment.

They cited a letter Ms Bhutto released before her death in which she said she would hold President Musharraf's government responsible for any attempt on her life.

How did President Musharraf react?

Mr Musharraf appealed for calm immediately after the assassination, as disturbances broke out in various parts of the country. He also postponed the parliamentary election.

Mr Musharraf's popularity took a hammering during 2007, partly because of an intermittent military campaign against Islamist militants that alienated many and failed to achieve clear results.

Only weeks before Ms Bhutto's assassination, he ended a six-week period of emergency rule, during which he sidelined leading judges who were set to rule on whether he was entitled to stay on as president.

After the 2008 election, a coalition emerged led by the PPP.

Mr Musharraf stepped down as president and left Pakistan, living in exile in the UK and Dubai.

He returned in March 2013 in an abortive attempt to stand in national elections in May.

Prosecutors placed him under house arrest on allegations that his government failed to provide adequate security for Ms Bhutto.

Days later, the prosecutor in the Bhutto murder case was shot dead by gunmen as he drove to a court hearing.

Did Pakistan democracy suffer a killer blow on this day?

It was a hellish day to be in Karachi. I remember being out with friends grabbing a bite sometime in the late afternoon (5ish), when seemingly all of a sudden chaos was everywhere as news broke that Benazir had been assassinated. People running on the streets, shopkeepers pulling shutters down and dispersing, cars screeching, zooming presumably trying to get home safely before the ruckus on the streets inevitably began. Never experienced anything like it, seeing chaos unfold before your eyes.

Love or hate her politics, it was a sad day to lose Pakistan's most remarkable daughter in such tragic fashion.

Friends of mine were driving out of Karachi for picnic but were blocked by mobs.

I use to live in arya mohalla at the timr.
I was 13 i think.

Was playing ea sports cricket on my pc, and then suddenly heard a huge bang which left out windows shaking.

My uncles and all who were attending the jalsa aswell came home. At first rumours were spread that bb was safe, but after an hour her death announced.

I still remember as soon as she was announced dead, our lights went out. And the whole crime scene was washed away. They cleaned up the whole spot

https://www.dawn.com/news/1379154/bilawal-recalls-mothers-legacy-accuses-musharraf-of-murder

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Wednesday branded former president Pervez Musharraf as the 'killer' of his slain mother. He made the accusation while addressing a large crowd of PPP supporters in Garhi Khuda Bux, who were gathered to commemorate Benazir Bhutto's 10th death anniversary.

Reiterating that he holds the man who pulled her security — rather than the man who pulled the trigger —responsible for Benazir's death, Bilawal cried "Qaatil! Qaatil! Musharraf qatil!" (Murderer, murderer; Musharraf's the murderer!) in front of a charged crowd as his sisters looked on.

Earlier, he had told his supporters that Benazir had been punished for propagating democracy and for her deep love for the people.

"My leader [Benazir], you were punished for fighting against dictatorship and presenting Islam's peaceful face to the world," Bilawal said. "You were punished for fighting for women and speaking for the oppressed. You were punished for loving the people."

Bilawal claimed that despite their rivals' best efforts to spoil her good work, the present-day PPP is working hard to continue her legacy.

"The 1973 Constitution, whose face was distorted by dictators, we've restored it to its original form. You used to be upset at poverty, so we started the Benazir Income Support Programme. We also allotted state land to poor farmers. We have built heart, kidney and liver hospitals everywhere, and treatment there is free of cost. You cared about the environment so we also started wind energy plants in Sindh. We've built dams to store water."

Bilawal also accused the incumbent government of undoing Benazir's legacy, saying: "They've weakened the democracy and parliament. Small provinces are being isolated from the federal government. This is a murderous government."

He also attached some blame of his mother's unresolved murder case on the judiciary, saying: "The judiciary for whom you [Benazir] struggled, the same judiciary hasn't given us, you, the victims of terror and missing persons any justice."

"O custodians of justice, please give justice to someone," he said.

Earlier, former president and party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari warned his rivals that even though he tries not to indulge in the politics of vengeance, he too has his limits.

"There is a conspiracy still going on," he claimed. "The conspiracy is still hatching new eggs — but our philosophy teaches patience. We have been patient, but I warn our rivals: don't push us to our limits. You have always back-stabbed us but we will not side with you this time. We will win the elections this time. I will not forgive them. I will defeat them from Kashmir to Gilgit-Baltistan."

What happened to her was unfortunate but she wasn't any less corrupt than her dad or husband. Let's not paint her with a brush of innocence.

Billy boy should remember who was in Government after Benazeer’s death.
His own father was responsible for finding the truth...

I watched a bit of that speech (yes, I was bored). It was all very North Korea/cultish - they speak of Benazir as if she is alive today and the crowds lap it all up. All very strange.

"Aab raj karegee Benazir, aab raj karegee Benazir. Wazir-i-azam Benazir, wazir-i-azam Benazir"........ What the flying.....

ok....

The next few days after Benazir assassination were days of bloodshed and a disturbing part of our history

2007 Dec 28, In Pakistan hundreds of thousands of mourners, weeping and chanting for justice, thronged the mausoleum of Pakistan's most famous political dynasty in a raw outpouring of grief for Benazir Bhutto. The government blamed al-Qaida and the Taliban for the assassination of the opposition leader, who was buried alongside her father. Furious supporters rampaged through several cities in violence that left at least 23 dead. The government said that Benazir Bhutto was not killed by gunshots or shrapnel as originally claimed but by a skull fracture suffered when her head slammed against her car during a suicide attack. A transcript released by the Pakistani government of a purported conversation between militant leader Baitullah Mehsud, who is referred to as Emir Sahib, and another man identified as a Maulvi Sahib, or Mr. Cleric. The government alleges the intercepted conversation proves al-Qaida was behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
(AP, 12/28/07)(AP, 12/29/07)

Pakistan was imploding around this time. Crazy how two PMs have met their demise at Liaquat Bagh.

What happened to Bhutto was appalling but the way she's been portrayed as a liberal moderniser doesn't stand up to scrutiny. It was on her watch the Afghan Taliban took over Kabul in 1996 and supported the Kashmir militants. Zia's "Islamization" was left largely intact.

She perhaps calculated that she needed to accomodate the khakis in her second term after being removed by the IJI alliance in 1990.

Whilst they were dealt a tough hand due to the nuclear sanctions and the costly blowback from Zia's Afghan war; both Bhutto and Sharif terms were marred by corruption and economic mismanagement that damaged peoples' faith in civil leadership in the 1990s.

Who killed the 23, are they worthless because they werent born into a rich, corrupt feudal family?

What in the world is that? I didn't know whether to laugh or cringe.

I wonder what brings people like Benazir (and then Bilawal) back to the messy world of politics? Bhutto was a billionaire in $ terms with lavish homes all around the world. Her security was also guaranteed in places like Dubai and London. She could have lived out a great life watching her children and then grandchildren grow old. Yet back she came knowing full well her life would be at risk. I guess it's the intoxication of the style of politics we see in the sub-continent where such leaders are treated as demi-gods. The buzz and thrill they get out of this must be addictive.

Remember the day well. Was in America for wedding in that period and went downstairs for breakfast in the hotel and saw it on the news :(

Also both assassinations are shrouded in mystery as to their true motives and whom committed it

One could argue that Benazir's death laid the foundation for the end of PPP and political demise of one feudal family who had built their legacy on dynastic politics. It also accelerated the rise of IK and initiated war on corruption which has led to disqualification of mujhay kyun nikala.

If Benazir hadn't been attacked she would have won the elections in 2008 and misruled for 5 years (or less), then ganja would have taken over after her. Both corrupt families taking turns to eat away at the country. Soon the whole nation would be calling on the army to rid them of these pests (a similar situation is happening now but some people have faith in IK)

A part of me is glad that Benazir passed since she was a corrupt, feudal lord who exploited the poor nation to the fullest and her passing allowed political space for IK to exploit.

She was a typical south-Asian politician -- feudal, power hungry and corrupt to the core. Came up only due to the dynasty she was born in, not because she was capable of doing anything worthwhile. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh -- they all have the misfortune of being ruled by such people. Thankfully India is moving away from this phenomenon in the form of Modi's rise to power.

She used to talk about waging a 1000 year was against India!!! Clearly delusional.

I will remember her as an extremely stupid women who got into top Unies due to name and money.

You should listen to Zardari's speech from today. You will do both. :)

Hilarious. :91:

But he doesn't have that funny accent of Bilawal.

So many people at a Zardari jalsa

Who did she nominate for the killing of her brother?

Her death completely changed the dynamics of Pakistani politics. It gave Zardari complete control of PPP which has done severe damage to the party. However, the future of the party looks bright now with the rise of Bilawal as a true leader.

It is also provided a platform for Imran’s circus to establish itself as the cult party with popular vote.

Billo the true leader? You are so disloyal to crooks, one day it was Nani ji, then it’s Billo. Stay loyal to one crook.

You can only laugh at people who see Bilawal as a leader.

The same Bilawal who has the guts to throw the blame of his mother's death on Musharraf, but doesn't have the shame to ask himself who benfited the most, and who came to power after her demise.

Or ask daddy why her death wasn't properly investigated, never mind anyone being charged.

I can't believe that a man of 32 years of age doesn't have the balls to call out for a proper investigation of his mother's killing, despite being the chairman of Pakistan's 3rd largest party.

And some people see this joker as the future Prime Minister of Pakistan. You can't find a better example of shamelessness.

Billo is a parody. Never done a single day's work, never earnt halal paisa, can't call out Daddy or mummys corruption and wants to lead a nation 200mn.

Can't say I was saddened by her demise. Corrupt hag who sold off the country and let her husband steal unabated

Unfortunately for Billoo the PM seat cannot be inherited on the basis of bloodline like he/she inherited his/her dynastic party. It will never be PM of Pakistan, since PPP is restricted to only interior Sindh now

I thought that day that it would be the end of corruption but sadly there was 10 more years of mayhem- 240 billion dollars pillaged from 2008 to 2018.

Or ask daddy why her death wasn't properly investigated, never mind anyone being charged.

PPP came in power afterwards. They asked UN to investigate under their government. Then sealed UN's report/findings when the investigators could not interview power like Baji Naheed or Rehman Malik both of whom were in the SUV with Benazir.

On the occasion of the 68th birth anniversary of his late mother and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Sunday said that the legacy of his late mother's arduous struggle for the restoration of democracy still informed the struggle of common man.

In a statement, the PPP chairman said that as governance in the country is currently marred by dismal performance, institutions remain in shambles and the people are left at the mercy of ruthless rulers, "it was natural for every patriot to miss the Daughter of the East".

"Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is the name of a movement, and it is the people's movement that carries the potential to create and produce new eras in history".

He said that as a political leader, the late Benazir Bhutto fostered democratic thinking at the grassroots level and evolved a harmonious atmosphere for the supremacy of the Constitution and Parliament
She ensured the access to basic rights such as education, health and employment opportunities for the underprivileged segment of the society, the chairman noted.

Bilawal recalled that Benazir - the first prime minister of the Muslim world - introduced legislations and game changer programs for the welfare of women, children, minorities, and workers.

"Whether in government or in opposition, she always strived to give hope to the people," Bilawal said.
The chairman said humanity will always be ashamed of the atrocities committed against Benazir Bhutto by anti-people forces.

"Mohtarma was subjected to extreme oppression because the oppressors were aware of the fact that she had not only inherited the legacy of Quaid-e-Awam Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, but also the ideology and vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah".

"Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto has become a symbol of hope and enthusiasm for generations to come against dictatorship, terrorism and extremism," he said.

Paying homage to his mother, Bilawal said:" Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was not forgotten".

The best tribute Billo could pay her is to take control of Sindh and stop the systemic looting from the poor of Sindh by his family and party. Surely that isnt too much to ask
