One of the most popular cricketers in Pakistan history, as well as as in international cricket overall, Shoaib Akhtar turns 38 years old today.

Name: Shoaib Akthar
Birth date: August 13, 1975
Hometown: Rawalpindi, Punjab
Teams: Pakistan, Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan, Asia XI, Durham, ICC World XI, Khan Research Labs, Kolkata Knight Riders, Pakistan International Airlines, Rawalpindi, Somerset, Worcestershire
Debut: Test: November 29, 1997 l ODI: March 28, 1998 l T20I: August 28, 2006

An enigma – possibly one of the more politer ways to describe Shoaib Akhtar, the ‘Rawalpindi Express’.

On his day, a ferocious express bowler capable of blowing away batting line ups with 100mph deliveries, however the most discussed Pakistani cricketer of all time was often in the news for his ‘off-field’ indiscretions.

An unfulfilled career that should have offered more netted 178 test wickets in 46 matches – Akhtar having missed as many matches through injury and suspensions.

There were more low points than high – disagreements with the captain, coach and PCB ranging from claims of him ‘feigning injury’, ‘breaking curfews’, ‘ball-tampering’ and general ‘bad attitude’ towards his captain and team-mates.

The lowest point in his career undoubtedly came on the eve of the 2006 Champions Trophy, when he tested positive for Nandrolone – and then being left out of the 2007 World Cup squad on ‘injury grounds’.

Having forced his way back into the squad for the 2007 World T20, he was alleged to have attacked his team mate, Mohammad Asif – leading to another fine and a 5 year ban from international cricket. Shoaib contested the fine while he appeared for the Indian Premier League and also a short stint in County Cricket for Surrey.

He made a comeback to Pakistan's national side in the T20 Quad-series tournament in Canada, but poor fitness prompted further questions. He again made it into a ODI series against Australia in UAE but only playing half of the games, he was again the talking point back in the country as to why he was selected. Many critics now felt that he may have bowled his last ball in Pakistani colours.

With age not on Shoaib’s side, and plenty of younger bowlers waiting to step into his boots, Shoaib never received a chance to add to his test appearances.

For Pakistani fans, it’s more a case of ‘what could have been’.

After a tough World Cup stint in which Pakistan lost to India in the semi-finals with Akhtar not being selected, retirement became inevitable. As expected, Shoaib Akhtar announced his intentions to retire at the end of the World Cup. An up and down, yet exciting career came to a rushing halt. Even the fastest of trains have to stop one day, just like this express one from Rawalpindi.

A great bowler to watch on his day! Him dismissing Sachin Tendulkar for a golden duck in Kolkata Test (1999) will go down as one of the most memorable moments in the history of fast bowling. Stunned, was the crowd!

Quite sad that he was more active in off the field controversies.

I consider him ONLY fast bowler in history of cricket. The aggression, style , speed all in one package. No other fast bowler in history matches him. he was a wonderful person.
Happy birthday to you

His cock-a-hoop will always be remembered. The real Cheetah of Cricket, Shoaib Akhtar. The bowler who gave new look to aggression and passion. Every bat perished when confronted his prowess. Some birds are not meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. Shoaib was one off them, giving aeroplanic flight to his wings all the time. Didn't you love him for this?

"A bloke's bowling at 150kph trying to rip the fingers off your arms or probably even worse. It gets your blood going and the adrenalin pumping. You are in a fight. And to me that's what Test cricket is all about." Justin Langer

Happy Birthday to the Rawalpindi Express!

.

Happy Birthday Shoaib. What a joy he was to watch. For me personally, the series vs England in 2005 will live long in the memory.

happy bday to the beast..

lucky to have met him and seen him live

a monster of fast bowling. the guy had it all. he just didn't want your wicket he wanted you hurt and the batsmen knew it. he was a joy for me to watch.

As complete as a fast bowler can get.
Pace, bounce, inswing, outswing, yorker, slower ball, you name it.

Shoaib Akhtar was the reason I started cricket otherwise playing cricket and soccer,,

13th August, 1975 : One of the fastest bowlers of all time, Shoaib Akhtar was born in Rawalpindi

What a sight it must have been for spectators to watch one of the fastest bowlers of all time gallop in to bowl. But what terror must he have inflicted on the hapless batsman at the other end?

More than the speed of his ball, what I really enjoyed was the mental superiority he enjoyed due to his reputation. One great example of that was against Vaughan in 2005 when after terrorizing all and sundry he bowled a gentle 113 KpH delivery which a startled Vaughan lobbed back at Akhtar - almost in meek surrender!

What a bowler and what a character!

Happy Birthday Shoaib Akhtar.

His career summary:

Tests 46 Matches : 178 wickets
ODIs 163 Matches : 247 wickets
T20Is 15 Matches : 19 wickets

He was almost on par with Afridi in terms of star power. Used to watch Pak games to see him bowl.

My favorite fast bowler! He was sheer pace and aggression unplayable and destructive on his day. They don't make it like him anymore.

Nobody provided theatre like Shoaib. The looooong run-up, the slingy action, the pacy delivery and stare followed by cheeky smile.

Multan 2005 was him at his best. English batsmen were expecting express pace, but Shoaib deceived batsman after another with a succession of slower balls. Took the pitch out of the equation.

Wish he listened to Woolmer and shortened his run-up though.

Could've been an ATG with his talent if he cut out the showmanship a bit and focused on delivering results.

But I guess that was part of the thrill.

My all time favorite fast bowler along with Wasim. I used to watch Pakistan cricket just to see Shoaib firing in from the boundary line with a bowling action I loved the most

a colossal waste of time. He chucked, he doped, he fought team mates and he missed half the test matches that Pakistan played.
A generation of cricketers who along with afridi normalized an unprofessional approach to cricket. A very poor mans Waqar younis

Possibly the most exciting quick of them all. Only Thommo matched the thrill factor for my dollar.

No bowler was as exciting and thrilling to watch that long run up and his hair flying back used to send a chill in my spine like a Ferrari steaming in no bowler has given me the that thrill and I doubt any bowler ever will. Anti hero.

What a sight it was to watch him....he was awesome, one of the top 5 quickest all time surely....i think if not for injuries, his attitude and controversies, he would have achieved som much more....When he was ON as a lover of pace bowling you never moved from the TV...

Absolutely agree - and can imagine what the batsmen were thinking also!
