What's new

On This Day: Dec 27, 1982 - Imran Khan takes 8/60 vs India at Karachi as Pakistan win by an innings

Best ever bowler from the Subcontinent, in my book. As good as any fast bowler ever, save only Marshall.

The best allround package for a cricket.

ATG Bowler. Competent Batsman. Inspirational Leader. Great Tactical Captain. Great Teacher (who retired after grooming 2 legends).

Fantastic bowler, all-rounder and a captain. All in one package.

Superb.

They don't make bowlers like this guy these days.

What a legend he was and such an inspiration for everyone. His persistence and never say die attitude even when he was struggling to make his mark in his younger days made him not only an international cricketer but a legend of the game.

The start of the Pakistan golden era (1982-1994) which began with a comprehensive home win over India.

I watched this spell live and simply couldn't believe my eyes. He had completely reinvented his 1980 bowling self. Nothing like that had ever been seen before. He would hurtle in from a long run up, gather momentum, curl up into that lively coiled spring of an action, slam down his front foot and unleash hell. The ball would be released at around 150 clicks, pitch at the 15 yard mark way outside off, snake in viciously and break your leg or your stumps. Fast bowling at its devastating best. He made me an avid cricket fan in that series and his utter humiliation of the great Vishy was one of the best deliveries I have ever seen. Nobody has ever captured Pakistani imagination since then except the ali- format batting maestro of 2019 - Mr Babar Azam.

I saw the spell live on TV too. This test and the one in Hyderabad (where Miandad hit 280*) were so fun to watch. The whole tour was memorable. In those days a test series lasted months. This one took close to four months, with many rest days (within and between the games). Miandad, Zaheer Abbas were in total control of the batting and Mudassir Nazar hit something close to 700 runs in that one series alone. This was also the debut series for Salim Malik and he hit a 100 in his first test (though I may be wrong, it was 37 years ago :) )

Having said all that Indians bowled and batted well too throughout the series. The real difference between the two teams was the number of devastating bowling spells Imran had throughout the six test matches. The in-swinging and on-target deliveries bowled at good pace were mesmerizing to watch with the whole stadium behind him during those long run-ups. Such an amazing time in Pakistan cricket!

What an amazing bowler he was , you can actually feel his 100 percent effort in each of his deliveries.
