Anyone who saw that match will realize that it was simply magic. India were following on, and then India won that Tests. The Aussies by then had made a record of winning around 16/17 Test wins in a row.

Simply magic by Harbhajan, Laxman and Dravid.

The '281 generation' started our climb to #1 later that decade.

Something very special happened that day for all cricket fans. Probably the greatest comebacks of all time.

Umar Amin, I always thought he was the real talent and would serve Pakistan cricket for long time after his great first class season the previous year and with Pak A. Now, looks like he is history now, sad.

Undoubtedly, India's greatest victory.Very fortunate to have witnessed that epic match.

Laxman and Dravid really turned tides from this game and since then India have emerged as one of top teams in the world.

Australian unbeatable streak was beaten. India and England managed some success against that undisputed side compared to others.

I still remember when India lost Mumbai test by 10 wickets, everybody wrote India off, during 2nd innings when India lost 4 quick wickets my friend said to me, inki whitewash hogi, I told him we are going to win after the match ...we had a blast.

Crystal clear in the memory. What a master class stand of the duo. Absolute all time heroics.

Remembering a special innings from Very Very Special Laxman
Australia’s 2001 series in India was significant for Indian cricket for many reasons
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Australia’s 2001 series in India was very significant for Indian cricket for many reasons.

India were comprehensively beaten in the first Test match in Mumbai by 10 wickets. And Steve Waugh and his all-conquering team were on a roll after having won 15 Test matches. It was Steve Waugh’s final frontier after having beaten every other team around the world.

Australia batted first and scored 445 in the first innings despite Harbhajan Singh’s hat trick. India were rocked by Glen McGrath and were bowled out for just 171 in the first innings. Steve Waugh asked India to bat again as Australia had a massive lead of 274 runs. He would have thought his bowlers would easily roll over the Indian batting lineup. However, one player named VVS Laxman had a very different idea.

Laxman who had scored 59 in the first innings was sent at number three by India's captain Saurav Ganguly and that turned out to be a master stroke. Laxman carried his good form and along with Rahul Dravid put on 376 runs. They batted the entire fourth day and Australian bowlers had no idea how to get them out.

Laxman went on to score 281, which was then the highest score by an Indian player, and set Australia a target of 384 in two sessions. A draw looked ominous when Australia reached 161 for 3 at tea on the last day but Australia could not survive the last session and lost their last seven wickets for just 51 runs handing India a win by 171 runs. India squared the series 1-1 and later won the decider to clinch the series 2-1.

This innings of 281 by Laxman was so special that it changed the mindset of Indian cricketers completely and India started winning Test matches abroad as they got a self-belief and confidence that they could bounce back from any situation.

That series also announced the arrival of Saurav Ganguly as a fierce captain who would look in the eye of the opposition. It also saw Harbhajan Singh’s 33 wickets haul which is still a record in a 3 match series. It broke Australia’s 15 matches winning streak. All this happened because of one special innings of 281 which the Aussies called a very very special innings by a Very Very Special Laxman.

This innings was played 20 years ago but it is still fresh in the minds of not only Indians but all cricket lovers around the world.

Forget about the runs made, the legendary come back and all but how classy were the knocks player?

That was some display of batsmanship.

The counter attack, the class, the elegance , the genius at display was unbelievable.

The odds against which this partnership happened is impossible to write in mere words.

1) Australia in red hot form having won 15 tests before landing in India and smashing India in 3 days in Mumbai thus extending their consecutive test wins to 16.

2) In the 2nd test -have India on the mat - and ask them to follow on with a seemingly insurmountable 274 run deficit.

3) To not lose a wicket at all on the 4th day against the relentless Aussie attack of McGrath, Gillespie and Warne - and then actually end up winning the match itself - I mean you cannot write a script like this even if you sat down and had the opportunity to conjure it up.

Simply put this match is the seminal "before and after" as far as Indian cricket is concerned. It will remain India's best test win - for the sort of impact it had on the self belief of the Indian team.

VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid - with their innings sealed their legacies in the annals of Indian and world cricket. Especially VVS Laxman for some mysterious reason always reserved his best against the Aussies.
