On this day Australia won the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, the last time an overseas team won a World Cup. It was their 3rd consecutive World Cup title, 4th title overall and 4th consecutive appearance in a World Cup final after failing to qualify for the semi finals at home in 1992. It proved to be the last time Glenn McGrath and Russel Arnold would represent their respective countries.

Tom Moody who won a World Cup with Australia in 1987 and 1999 was coaching the Sri Lankans in this big game against his home nation. Sri Lanka would go on to play another World Cup final four years later, where again they would finish second best.

This match is best remembered for Adam Gilchrist's innings and his "squash ball in the gloves" tactics and the farcical finish to the game in the Barbados dark.

It is the only time in 12 ICC World Cups that the two sides playing the final have met in a World Cup final for the second time. Revenge for 1996.

Commentators in the game included Mark Nicholas, Michael Atherton, Ian Botham and Tony Cozier. Nasser Hussain and Michael Slater were doing the analysis for Sky in the company of David Gower.

Four years later on the same ground Misbah ul Haq was MOM to help Pakistan secure a 3-0 series win. This was a really important innings in a low scoring game, proving that you can be the difference maker in ODIs even with a strike rate of 57. Painful viewing for Savak.
