What's new

On This Day June 18, 2017: Pakistan destroyed India to seal Champions Trophy victory by 180 runs

This celebration will carry on till next year when Indians end up losing the one bragging right they have over Pakistan. Although I would prefer to meet you once more in a KO, but I'm fairly certain India will be knocked out in the group stages itself

Great prediction! It may still happen :)

Chill! Its a game of cricket. There were no shockwaves. The Indian team needed to introspect and we came up with KulCha.

Oh come on, you are not trying to tell me Indian fans were expecting the result? I mean even now the Indian media is talking about CT17 after Sunday. Shockwaves tend to do that, resonate over time.

Yes indeed. It will take another 2 world cup defeats to Pakistan for India to avenge what Pakistan did in Champions Trophy final! Maybe even that is not enough and maybe the CT final will never be avenged at all! :D

Naaah, that 1985 final was avenged in 1986 Sharjah Final, Miandad's last ball 6, still causing nightmares in India. How is Cheema these days I wonder? Hmmmm.

Only someone delusional would believe that a regional tournament (it was called the Austral-Asia Cup for a reason) compared with the World Championship of Cricket in which all the top ranked 9 teams from around the world played.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Championship_of_Cricket

Then again, delusion leads to predictable results as is much in evidence.

This was the best day of my life! Lost count of the amount of times I watched this. Can't believe it happened.

Will never forget this the build up to the match was just crazy with all of India saying India will show Pakistan who is the father on Father's Day and all that none sense I only wish I could have seen the look on stupid sehwags face when Pakistan won. That day Fakhar Zaman became a hero for all of Pakistan the whole team played well in the end Pakistan were champions

Forget about winning or losing, I am actually missing cricket more than ever after looking at pictures in OP with full crowd. :inti

This was complete ownage by Amir. :inti

202 years after the Battle of Waterloo, another emphatic thrashing was bestowed to an arrogant champion by an underdog with whom there was a shared and turbulent history.

One of the best days of my life, easily.

These are the kind of days that make me love Pakistan to the point where even if they lose and get humiliated, I can't stop supporting them, because I know the kind of joy they can provide fans like myself is unmatchable.

What a day... will never forget this.

Epic phainty was given by Pakistan to India. :fz :amir2 :hafeez2

Why did we choose to field first on a flat track with no dew possibility and on a bright sunny day, against the poorest chasers in world cricket, after that group win? Kohli can never undo this damage, just because of his ego clash with Kumble he sacrificed the team's interests. Among the top 5 most painful defeats in white ball cricket for me and the other 4 are all WC and WT20 final defeats. This result would have been easier to digest in the late 80s or 90s, but in 2017 no way.

Some credit should also be given to Sehwag, acted like a motivator for PCT and put pressure on our lads.

Amazing to be in the press box at The Oval that day.

An occasion that I will never forget.

The perfect day.

There were a few so-called 'neutral' commentators not very happy that day, whilst others were loving what was happening.

It was indeed a great day. A complete performance.

However, till when will we continue to milk this?

Great teams forget about past success and strive for the present and future. We on the other hand still bring back highlights of 92 world cup, 17 champions trophy. T20 world cup every year. If you want to build a great sustainable successful team, past success needs to be forgotten as quickly as possible. Just read Alex Ferguson's book or read up on Phil Jackson on how they cultivated the culture of sustained success.

Hehehe.

It's the time of the year again!

A reminder how 1.3 billion fans were humbled by 2 balls, and a no ball.

I still remember that day very well and it was one of the most heartbreaking loss. Not because we lost the game but the way we did. Pak played brilliant cricket without a doubt but I still believe Indian players were not focussed on that game with the ongoing Anil Kumble issue.

I was in London that week and randomly went outside Oval Stadium on 17th June (day before the game) to see teams practicing. Still remember it was a blazing hot day in London, lots of media and fans were outside the stadium. Pakistan team was practicing relentlessly but Indian players were no where to be seen. I happen to meet and took pics with Hafeez & Junaid Khan who were boarding team bus after practice. Also, met Chacha Pakistan who was like a celibrity and whom I asked for any available tickets. I also remember asking Oval staff the type of wicket that will be dished out tomorrow - whether it be fresh pitch or used one. My fear was, a used pitch would help Pakistan like Eng semi game. But the guy assured me for finals it will be fresh pitch and that gave me some relief.

A fan in me determined to find out whereabouts of Indian players went to the hotel they were staying. Its a posh 5 star hotel near Green Park Station (forgot the name). Lots of Indian fans were gathered outside hotel lobby but again couldnt spot any players. Later, I met Boria Majumdar (journalist from India today) who told us Indian players, captain etc are in a meeting sorting out issues with Kumble and who the next coach should be.

That made me disgusted that as a fan we are so much tensed about the game but players themselves were arguing about the next coach.

As expected Pakistan came fully prepared on the match day and on the other hand a lethargic Indian captain whose mind was on something else. That negative energy rubbed onto entire team and rest is as they HISTORY.

On this day : Sachin Tendulkar congratulated Indian Hockey Team.

Can't blame him because of the type of rondu fans we have. :inti

On this day, Oval station was packed with Indian fans going home at 50-5

Hmm, lemme guess, one was a blonde guy from Australia who on the previous day was running around calling Indian players 'rockstars'. I'm thoroughly delighted Pakistan team socked it to him.

And it would be a fair guess, some of the others not happy would have had a vested interest in IPL.

Best day of my life as a cricket fan.Indians were brought back down to the earth that day. That day Indians were shown who is the real "peo".This is the lesson Indians will never forget.

Interestingly this was the first time India got to play a proper 50/50 final in CT. Their first win was shared due to rain (SL), their second final win was a reduced match to 20 overs vs England. Then of course CT17. Didn't even last 50 overs.

Oh well.

Had my MBA 4th semester paper next day, trust me one of the invigilators saw highlights 3 times in 3 hours of my paper. Whole Kashmir was on streets when Amir removed Kohli, kind of Eid before Eid.

Man that was one tough defeat to swallow.

But boys have more than made up for that by mauling padosis thrice in a row in 9 months across Dubai and Manchester and thereby restoring the serene normalcy. :)

What a day. I remember watching the before match analysis and except Ramiz every commentator chose India. Nobody gave us a chance. There was something about Mickey Arthur and that team and that day. It felt like a movie.

Pak was exceptional on the day and made it a pretty one sided end to a hyped ICC tournament final.

It's not only my fondest cricketing memory but one of the happiest moments of my life. For years I read about the 1992 World Cup but it's difficult to relate to something that happened when in your nappies and never saw live.

The disposable and fleeting nature of T20 cricket, and with another event scheduled nine months later meant the 2009 WT20 didn't register on the same scale.

A year prior in January 2016 when watching an ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand, I came down with an incurable condition called tinnitus (ringing in the ears) which made me nearly suicidal. Cricket was my escape. Now I've learned to live with it. A few months later Pakistan were dumped out of the T20 World Cup playing outdated cricket with some toxic individuals in the team.

When Mickey Arthur was appointed coach, Inzamam made chief selector and Sarfraz becoming captain, one sensed a new era beginning - Pakistan's "white ball reset". The results weren't immediate, but some greenshoots were apparent (chasing 300 in England and beating Australia at the MCG) while a raft of youngsters were inducted.

I won't narrate the events of the tournament. All I'll say is how that campaign hasn't resulted in a film is another example of Pakistani economic incompetence - a failure to chart an incredible human triumph over adversity while teams like England grant knighthoods for one Ashes series win.

Truthfully England and India were better ODI sides overall. However we not just beat but demolished them playing a brand of cricket not seen in years. I sensed it was Pakistan's Cup during the SF but refused to believe so remembering the 2007 WT20 heartbreak.

Just missed the Rohit dismissal returning from a walk, but screamed every unrepeatable obscenity at Azhar when he dropped Virat Kohli. This was prime Kohli, King of Chases. Of all the people to drop.

The next ball was the biggest moment of catharsis ever. 10 years of tragedies, scandals, isolation, no home cricket and ritual humiliation against India in ICC events was overcome in that moment.

That's why I'll always have a soft spot for those involved. Unfortunately the afterglow quickly fizzled out, but it was the first step in Pakistan's ODI revival. That was my generation's 1992 moment.

One of the most amazing days in all of international cricket history.

Indeed, time for the highlights again!

According to Islamic Calender, today is the day when we heard the famous lines "One minute down next minute up, Pakistan cricket at its very best".

It is the 22nd of Ramadan and today is the day when Pakistan thrashed India in the Champions Trophy final.

How many of you knew this fact before?

It's not only my fondest cricketing memory but one of the happiest moments of my life. For years I read about the 1992 World Cup but it's difficult to relate to something that happened when in your nappies and never saw live.

Sad to hear about your tinnitus. And glad to know that you are better now.

That was utter destruction by Fakhar Zaman. After 15 long years , I genuinely feared a Pakistani batter for the first time since peak Saeed Anwar .

And apparently he shocked the Indian team too because they looked lost and timid themselves.

I was so happy and bless to be able to watch it with my wife, brother, parents and sister. I was so nervous and worried and prayed so much prior to the match. It was also during the month of ramadan. I couldnt believe we won like it didnt feel real. I will never forget the happiness I got that day, to beat India in a final as a Pakistani the feeling cannot be explained.

My brother was never into cricket but we would watch big matches and to see the happiness he had on his face was something special. He passed away in 2022 may Allah grant him Jannah

It was a beautiful memory for him, myself, my family and of course all of Pakistan

One of the very few moments that, as a Pakistani Fan, I can cherish for my whole life. CHampions trophy and 2009 finals always gives me goosebumps whenever I watch the game again.

It has been long since we had a taste of ICC Trophy. Those were good times.

Hopefully the team can replicate it this year finally.

India was still too traumatized by this loss that they lost the final Vs Australia last year too.
Aus defeat hurts more because India are a much better team than Aus and still lost it. Australia were simply lucky to win that game I feel. India would win 8 out of 10 times against that Aus team if they play a series.

2017 CT, Pakistan was in red hot form leading up to the finals. Indian team's balance was bad. Only 4 batsman and Kedar Jadhav, MSD made up the batting. Once Amir removed the top order, it was curtains down for India. India deserved to lose the finals.

The greatest moment in Pakistan cricket history

We qualified by the skin of our teeth - no thanks to Misbah and Azhar- and came into the tournament as the expected winners of the wooden spoon. After our humiliating performance vs India in the opening game even I as a die hard PCT fan had lost all hope. However as they saying goes "no good thing ever dies"

What Sarfraz achieved with an inexperienced team, full of rookies and, let's face it, mediocre players, was unprecedented. He transformed them into a formidable force, defying all odds—a feat no cricket captain has ever accomplished, nor likely ever will.

Defeating India on June the 18th was a historic day for the people of Pakistan. A Karachi wala led his troops filled with the diverse groups of Pakistan into the battlefield and his leadership is what allowed us to emerge on top.

Unfortunately I think this will be the last trophy we will have in our cabinet especially with the KP lobby within PCT growing stronger. Our only hope is seeing either Saifi back as captain or within a coaching role to nurture in proper talent and creating a system that reduces regional bias of KP and Punjab

One of the best moments for Pakistan cricket. Misbah fans can't handle this fact and their blood boils into oblivion, constantly making excuses such as fluke and other blah blah psl nonsense.

Anything to avoid the fact that he was just a great captain, who had won cups before his stint and actually made the correct choices and gelled a confident team.

Sarfaraz lived the dream of every subcontinent kid that day. Beating arch rival India in an ICC final with the odds stacked against you as the underdog and then coming up with a total demolition job.

However wasn’t enough for him to take the foot of the gas and then there was that.

Only a country like Pakistan can disrespect sarfi like this.

Misbah has done more damage to Pakistan then the anyone in Pakistan's history, excluding fixers ofcourse.

I honestly respected Sarfaraz as a person. I was angry when a certain Pakistani fan insulted him on video when he was enjoying time with his son. But then the racial abuse that he spouted to a black SA player on live TV made me lose all respect for him. I don't care how much his fans try to defend him for what he said, the truth was recorded on camera that day.
