What was amazing Pakistan defeated New Zealand (who were looking invincible in that tournament) twice!!

IIRC he once mentioned that he had this shirt from 1987 and wanted to wear it if team reach final but we lost to Australia in Semi Final.

Look at their physiques, even the commentator. Naturally well built unlike today's generation where much is dependent on heavy weights and treadmills inside a gymnasium rather than a good diet and running in grounds.

Nice. Remember that day.

Having said that, I'd rather we moved out of that time warp. The here and now is what needs focus.

Our team that day:

Aamer Sohail, Rameez Raja, Saleem Malik, Javed Miandad, Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Imran Khan, Moin Khan, Wasim Akram, Aqib Javed and Mushtaq Ahmed.

What a team.

It looks great if you consider their overall careers but at that time it was a very mediocre team. Most of the players were very inconsistent or mediocre at that time.

think Saeed Anwar got injured before the tournament and Ramiz Raja was his replacement. Had Saeed Anwar not get injured then this would be an All-Star team easily.

That's when Pakistan Cricket peaked.

Imran used gym equipment as part of his training circuit when he worked out during his career.

Inconsistent or mediocre ? Rameez I'll give you was mediocre but Saleem Malik, Javed Miandad, Imran, Wasim, Mushtaq were certainly not at that time.

Pakistan were the only team to win a Test in the Caribbean in the 80s, the only team to avoid defeat in a series in the Caribbean between 1974 and 1995, the only team to win a series in India between 1985 and 2000, and they did not lose a series outside Australasia between 1982 and 1993.

We also had reached the 87 WC SF, and had been dominant in ODIs having won the 89/90 Champions Trophy that featured the mighty West Indies, Nehru Cup 89/90, 1990 Australasia Cup and the 90/91 Wills Trophy also featuring WI. Anything but mediocre.

The 1999 world cup final team was as good if not better
S. Anwar, W. Wasti, A. Razzaq, Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Moin Khan, S. Afridi, A. Mahmood, W.Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq and S. Akhtar.

I still remember the Pakistan bowling that day which was awesome.

Aaqib bowling to 4 slips - absolutely fantastic.

In 24 years, humanity in general has discovered gravitational waves, traveled to Mars, is thinking about building space stations that can survive and thrive in case a natural calamity takes place, invented nano-bots, super computers, and is on the cusp of a new scientific discovery almost every day.

We have gone from Imran leading us to Afridi leading us, and a major chunk of our population still considers Afridi as a role model, a leader of men, and an architect of change.

:))

If it was as good if not better they wouldn't have choked in the final. Pak team from 1982 to 1993 was mentally stronger than late 90s team.

Wasti was very mediocre, Razzaq in the top order was always an issue vs Dukes ball and quality seam bowling, Ijaz was past his best and Afridi wis inconsistent.

Brilliant game- do or die.
Imran provided a captain s masterclass of dealing with huge pressure.
Bowlers were fantastic in this game, I watched with bros & sis s at the student union in London .
A long exhausting night but completely worth it.

Inzi played in both games and he thinks that the 1999 team was better.
1999 World Cup side was the strongest: Inzamam

overall 99 team potentially was well better, however cricket isn't played on paper

The 1992 team in the last few games of the tourney played well above their capability on paper, they handled the pressure of being underdogs for the most part extremely well and were led from the front by their experienced players like Imran, wasim and javed who performed exceptionally well when it counted

The 1999 teams experienced players generally for the most didn't stand upto be counted when it mattered most, there wasn't the desire or hunger that was witnessed in 1992

Its not always the best team that wins, its usually the team that wants it more

Nicely put.

Hmmmm, not too sure about this day in particular though, apart from the hardcore fans, not many would pinpoint this day to be that special in Pakistan's cricketing history.

Yaar I meant the 92 WC as a whole. We need to move on.

I was too young to see this game live though i've seen highlights on YouTube.

Aamer Sohail played a superb innings at the top of the order.

Wasn't there a big altercation at the end when a blatant edge wasn't given?

You forgot waqar younis to who was injured.

The 99 team is the strongest PK any WC and tbh, should hammered Aus in the final. Saeed Anwar and his batting handle grip cost us a WC.

I still cannot fathom or understand what happened to us that day. Just such an epic choke and totally baffling performance with the bat.

As i said one of the biggest reasons was Saeeds batting grip Handle. In those 250 was a good score and up until his melt down over the grip, he looked in total control and none of the bowlers looked threatening to him. But some of the batting was dreadful and the Aussies played really well.

It's not as unfathomable when you factor in we lost to Bangladesh, India and South Africa too in that WC. Our batting generally spluttered throughout the tournament, heavily reliant on Anwar and Inzamam, and carrying veterans well past their prime like Ijaz and Salim. We had guys like Wasti and Razzaq in the top 3 who'd always be susceptible against the swinging white Dukes. There was too much reliance on the bowling, which was a star studded lineup, to bail us out.

Yes it involved Mike Whitney if I remember correctly. Brash pace bowler who always had a lot to say.

Fantastic match this.

One thing about this match is the attacking fields that Imran Khan set. At times there were 3 slips and a gully when Aaqib was bowling a lovely spell.
