Australia's new era, after the end of Allan Border's decade of captaincy, began with an epic encounter. What looked like their first Test victory in Pakistan for 35 years was turned into a home triumph by the bold batting of Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed on a slow, low pitch. Coming together at 258 for nine with the awesome task of averting Pakistan's first ever defeat at the National Stadium, Inzamam and Mushtaq added 57 on a worn pitch against the redoubtable leg-spin of Warne. To the unrestrained delight of a crowd which steadily grew in number and chanted Allah-O-Akbar (God is great), they accomplished their goal in 8.1 overs, against an attack weakened by the withdrawal of McDermott, with an infected toe, and then by injuries to McGrath and May. In the end, Warne and Angel, in his second Test, were the only front-line bowlers still standing. Pakistan had never scored as much as 314 in a fourth innings to win; coach Intikhab Alam described the victory as the country's finest ever. Observers hoped it might revive interest in Test cricket in Pakistan.

It was especially deflating for Taylor, the first man to score a pair of spectacles in his first Test as captain. He had decided to take the new ball at 229 for seven, when Warne was in full cry. The final result was disappointing for both Warne, who gave another command performance - eight for 150 from 63.1 overs - and Michael Bevan, who announced his arrival in the Test arena with a composed 82. It was especially dispiriting for the vice-captain and wicket-keeper, Healy, who blamed himself for the defeat: Pakistan gained the winning runs from four leg-byes when Inzamam was out of his ground attacking Warne.

The Australians had converted a useful first-innings lead of 81 into a handsome overall advantage of 313, thanks principally to Boon, who scored his 19th century in 90 Tests, and added 122 in 174 minutes with Mark Waugh. Waugh's dismissal precipitated a collapse of eight wickets of 61 runs, the last five for just 19 in 9.2 overs, against the irresistible fast bowling of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. Wasim finished with a match analysis of eight for 138 and Waqar seven for 144. They were responsible for six ducks over Australia's two innings. Flamboyant opener Saeed Anwar was inspired to play two wonderfully expressive hands of 85 and 77.

Just when it seemed Australia's ensign might finally be raised again in Pakistan, his efforts were backed up by Inzamam, who was undefeated over two hours and 35 minutes, Rashid Latif, with a daring 35 from 56 balls at No. 9, and Mushtaq. Pakistan's famous victory was only the seventh by one wicket in Tests. It was Australia's third wafer-thin failure in successive seasons, following the defeat by one run against West Indies at Adelaide in 1992-93 and by five runs against South Africa at Sydney in 1993-94.

It was stuff like this that gave us the title the most unpredictable team in the world ( not 40 all out). That never giving up attitude and the ability to thrive under pressure. It was a great knock by the big man.

Those golden memories and that team with a never giving up attitude.

Next 2 matches resulted in a draw and that was the last Test Series Pakistan won against Australia.

After this series we won only 2 Test matches against Australia, One in Sydney and one in Leeds.

At the time I would say that I rated us as the best team in the world. Brilliant.

We soo need that back...

Inzy played a gem that day, Ian healy lived with that stigma of missing his stumping .. Such a fine keeper Healy was, and such events hurt one to see him blame himself for one error.

Had the pleasure of being at the national stadium for all 5 days. Atmosphere was electric.

Last time pakistan beat Australia in a test series. Inzi did play a blinder to win that game but also wasim and waqars bowling in 2nd inns brought us back into the match.

Chasing down 300 to win the Test and series - epic.

Amazing last wicket stand - Inzi a true match winner for Pak.

But but Inzy is a choker in pressure situations...

Can anbody share video clips of this match & the one where salim malik scored double to save series. Have searched youtube but never found these clips.

There is a reason why this guy has one of the highest averages in victories :inzi

First ever test match I saw apparently

Ian Healy missed an easy stumping off Shane Warne's bowling at the last moment when Inzamam came down the track to hit Warne out of the park, if I remember correctly. Am I correct?

Regardless, great victory for Pakistan.

2nd October 1994 : Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed fashion an unlikey win against the Aussies

2nd October 1994

The greatest last-wicket stand

Inzamam ul Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed fashioned an unlikely victory with a 57-run last-wicket stand in a Test that was filled with on-field and off-field drama. Australia had not won a Test in Pakistan for 35 years. Michael Bevan, making his Test debut, top scored for Australia in their first innings. The visitors secured a healthy 81-run lead but were restricted in the 2nd innings despite a century from David Boon. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis shared nine wickets and Pakistan were left with a target of 314. They looked on course for most part but in came Shane Warne, who toiled alone on the last day, to pick a five-fer. Meanwhile, there was off-field controversy when it was alleged that Saleem Malik had called Warne and Mark Waugh on the fourth day evening and offered them cash to the tune of $200,000 to under-perform on the last day. Pakistan slipped to 258/9 when Mushtaq joined Inzamam. The duo took it slowly and began to frustrate the Aussies by getting closer to the target. Warne still stood between the duo. When it came down to just three needed, Ian Healy slipped up. A big leg-break from Warne, had Inzama stepping down but it spun past him and Healy fluffed a stumping. To make matters worse, it went for four byes! Inzamam and Mushtaq had put on 57 - the highest last-wicket stand to win a Test. Dickie Bird later called it the best match he had officiated.

Ian Healy relives his best and worst moments behind the stumps for Australia

IAN Healy isn’t short of memorable moments. You wouldn’t expect a man who spent 119 Tests standing behind the stumps to the likes of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to not have a story, or two.

“I’d be able to pick five dismissals from Warnie alone,” Healy told foxsports.com.au.

Ashes series in England handed the Fox Cricket commentator some of his greatest playing memories. His 1993 dismissal of Graham Thorpe at Edgbaston still ranks as his favourite stumping.

But three other occasions still stand out to Healy — for good and bad reasons — almost 20 years after his retirement.

MISSED STUMPING V PAKISTAN IN KARACHI, 1994

Healy made his Test debut in Karachi in 1988, but his return six years later spoiled his memories of the venue.

Australia hadn’t won a series in Pakistan since 1959, but was in the driver’s seat in the first Test needing just one wicket for victory.

But tailenders Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed turned in a gritty 53-run partnership to bring Pakistan within three runs of a one-wicket victory.

That was when Healy suffered one of his darkest on-field moments.

“I missed a stumping to lose a Test match in Pakistan, which ended up being the last ball of the match,” he said.

“They were nine down, three to win, and I missed four byes which was a stumping from Warnie’s bowling.”

Inzamam charged down the wicket to Warne, failing to play through the leg-side as the ball travelled between bat and pad.

Healy was briefly unsighted and failed to take the stumping as the ball fizzed through his legs and away for four byes to give Pakistan the win.

“That’s as bad as it gets,” Healy added.

“Steve Waugh was about to take a dressing room photo before I glared at him, and was about to put his camera somewhere, and he just sat back down.”

The remaining two Tests were drawn, leaving Pakistan with a 1-0 series win.

Umpire Dickie Bird said it was the best Test match he'd ever seen.

IMO this was Pakistan cricket's last hurrah, the end of the golden era before the downfall began in 1995.

Wasn't this the game that some Aussie players claimed to have been offered money by Salim Malik to fix? Interesting that they lost it due to a rather large last wicket partnership :smith

Oh my days, i was actually there. Bunked school that day to go to national stadium karachi and that must have been the greatest bunks of them all!

Salim "The Rat" smiling from ear to ear, must have made some good bucks on that one, hahah.

Didn't watch this game live.

Inzamam was a brilliant matchwinner during those days.

I recall that Saeed Anwar played Shane Warne beautifully in that Test. Whereas the flipper did for Aamir Sohail and Wasim Akram - both looking to pull the ball but finding it came on to them too quickly - Saeed Anwar, with all the time in the world, went back and simply deposited the flipper over mid wicket.

The other thing I remember is that Australia were really well placed in the second innings. It was a sharp in-swing delivery from Waqar Younis which aced Mark Waugh’s defence, that precipitated a collapse. With the ball reverse swinging, at a venue which helped that style of bowling like no other in Pakistan, Wasim and Waqar flattened Australia.

Is this the test series where that pakistani home umpire was simply refusing to give inzamam out after he was plumb - again and again in succession?

That was 1998/99 tour. This was from 94/95 - Taylor's first Test as captain .

Mark Taylor still thinks there were a lot of lbw decisions that didn't go their way in this Test though.

Fond memories of the 1990s Pakistan cricket team which was the envy of every genuine cricket lover in the world.

So much talent and so much passion for the game.

Mark Taylor needs to stop crying. You don't hear Wasim or Waqar crying about the all the obviously out decisions that didn't go their way in the '99 Hobart test. Including a Justin Langer caught behind that even a deaf person would have given out.
