"One decision we have to make about a player - Others are sealed (World Cup squad)" : Mickey Arthur
Mickey Arthur speaking after the conclusion of the Pakistan vs Australia ODI series:
"Nobody likes to lose a series so we're gutted, we want to win every time we play"
"The debate is going to rage about us resting players but we simply had to do that. It gave us an opportunity to look at our 2nd tier players, the guys who performed in the A series last year against Eng Lions and NZ A"
"The positives I take from the series is that we hit 5 hundreds and we found a batsman and one young quick bowler. Those guys will certainly come into the mix and they'll be in our reckoning going forward"
"Nobody wants to be whitewashed, of course it's an issue. But again, we knew what we had to do. We couldn't play our full strength side here, those guys have played since Sep 12th and they needed a mental and physical break. We work them pretty hard, it's not just match days but on training days as well. We had to rest the guys who we thought will play a key role in our World Cup planning"
"We had the option of either resting them in the PSL or in this series. That was our dilemma"
"It's a massive concern (Pakistan's recent ODI record against top sides) and of course it's being addressed. I think players have progressed (after CT), individual players have progressed though we haven't got the results. We were poor in the Asia Cup. The SA series was tight, 3-2 could have gone either way. We took a risk here by resting our players because it was the right thing to do, we had to do that to get optimum performance going into a World Cup"
"I'm comfortable and confident that we have the ingredients with our players to go and shake up the World Cup"
"Haris Sohail has been fantastic, two hundreds, he's been very good. He's shown us the quality he's got. Today I was really impressed because in the previous two innings, I thought his tempo wasn't where it should be but today his tempo was spot on. If he bats like that, and our top order bats like that, we're not a 280-side, we'll become a 310-side and that's where we've got to be, going into the World Cup"
"We're very close (to finalising the World Cup squad). Inzi and I have met regularly and we're close. I'd probably say there's one decision we have to make on a player, the others are sorta signed and sealed. We go back to Lahore and the guys who have been resting and recuperating come back in, on individual plans. They'll come to the NCA. We get them fit and strong and in essence, the England tour is going to be a bit of a training camp for us. We're going to work the guys hard throughout that tour. We're going to need the guys peaking on May 31 for the World Cup game against WI"
"I'm not going to sugarcoat it, we've got a lot of work to do with the bowling. Our death-bowling hasn't been good over the last year"
"The minute Yasir began to challenge both edges, he became a different bowler. Everyone knows his googly is work in progress but he needs to show it and he did that, and he started challenging both edges. Imad started doing that too by bowling his conventional spinner. When you challenge both edges, the batsmen become tentative. I think he got better as the series progressed"
"Hafeez had the plate taken out of his finger 4 days ago in the UK, we're hoping he'll be fit and ready to go for the start of the England tour. Shoaib Malik will be fine, he'll be ready to start"
"No concerns with resting Fakhar and Babar. Fakhar Zaman needed rest, he's been nursing a knee problem through the whole 5 months. Babar Azam got run out 3 times during the PSL and he was nursing a groin. He needed to rest that, we couldn't risk him here and have a groin go and then he's out for 6 weeks. He's our gem. Those 2 guys needed significant rest. Babar had played every game for Pakistan and he needed that rest, physically and mentally. He'll argue because he wanted to play every game. The dilemma was, do we rest him during PSL or this series? We could have rested all those guys during PSL but that wouldn't have gone down that well with the franchises, would it"
"There's a lot of young guys in the dressing room. We debriefed every day with these guys, I can't fault work ethic or attitude. These guys came in and gave it their all. The standard between our first choice and our second choice is big, we saw it on the field. We haven't been as poor in the field through a series for ages. I lost my marbles a bit when Imad Wasim was in the hotspot area during the 2nd game in Sharjah. But the fielding coach said to me, but who should be there? And I couldn't find anybody. But we know in our first choice side, Shadab Khan and Babar Azam are out there, Fakhar Zaman's gone to the sweeper. It just works, like a machine. That was the frustration, watching it. The young guys who we've brought in now know what the standards are, they'll go away and work. If they want to be a part of the setup going forward, they've gotta come back at the level we require them"
(No finisher) "That's one thing we aren't blessed with. I've got my eye on 3 players we need to work on to perform that role. The England tour will be like a training camp for us and we're going to be working on these things in that time, we've got to get those 3 guys up to speed"
"We had an 18 year old a year ago in Shaheen Shah Afridi and now we have Mohammad Hasnain. They will take the same path, just a year apart. I'm excited about Hasnain, there's a lot of work to do with him. He needs to get fitter, he's never been in a programme before. He needs to worth on his fielding. But raw pace, raw talent he has in abundance which is pretty exciting. He's got everything and he's going to be very exciting for us"
"Resting our players against Zimbabwe last year wouldn't have made any difference. We got on the road on Sep 12th for the Asia Cup, we went all the way through to SA with 4 days break. Straight from that, we went to PSL. Finished the PSL and 2 days later, came here. Whether we rested them against Zimbabwe wouldn't have made any difference as that wasn't in this period of 5 months"
"Australia will be a threat at the World Cup, no doubt. You get Warner and Smith back, you put Starc and Cummins back and it's pretty formidable. I think there's up to 7 teams that can win the World Cup, which will make the tournament really intriguing"
