CHANDIGARH: There is good news coming from across the borders for the kitchen staple, as the first two truckloads of onions from Afghanistan arrived at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) of Attari border late on Tuesday night and were cleared on Wednesday. It is expected that in the coming days, prices may fall as more trucks are likely to arrive.

Sources said that the two truckloads each carrying 30 metric tonnes (600 bags of 50 kg on each truck) arrived from the wholesale market of Kabul at the ICP of Attari via Pakistan and were cleared by customs.

Talking to this correspondent, former Chairman of CII (Amritsar Zone) Rajdeep Uppal said, "As onion consignments have arrived from Afghanistan and in the coming days, we expect more such consignments to come, the prices of this kitchen staple will further drop. Onions there are cheaper than in India."

"As trade with Afghanistan has been going on for many decades and there is no customs duty, we have to pay for transportation, loading, unloading and other charges," said a trader who had booked a consignment of onions which arrived on Wednesday.

It is learnt that traders in India book their onion consignments with traders based in Afghanistan and it takes about a week for the consignment to arrive. At times the payment is made in advance and at times it is on credit depending on the relationship between the traders.

Last year, five trucks of onions came from Afghanistan every day for a week. But in 2017, for about two months, around 25 truckloads came to Attari daily with about 1000 tonnes and helped in curbing the rising prices of the commodity in the domestic market.

The Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation (MMTC) has already floated a tender for import of onions from China, Afghanistan and Egypt.

Another trader said that the two consignments which have come today are most likely to be consumed in Punjab itself. Besides Afghanistan, stocks of onions are also expected from Egypt and are likely to arrive by October 15.

"Wholesale prices have come down from Rs 50 to Rs 40 but the retail prices are still up as they are between Rs 60 and 70. The reason is due to heavy rains in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and southern states, the onion crop got delayed and it will take about a month for the prices to stabilize and come
down as the new crop is expected after Diwali,’’ said Om Parkash, a leading vegetable trader in Amritsar.

A trader on condition of anonymity said that the hoarding of onions is causing the problem and the government should take steps to check it. The government had already warned that it will take strict action if any trader is found hoarding the crop.

one more source..

New Delhi: Onion will not be able to make people cry for long, because Kabul has started sending onions to the country, to have a friendship with India. Afghan onions have started selling in various cities of Punjab, adjoining the western border of the country. Business sources have said that onions have started coming into the country from Afghanistan on the way through Pakistan.

A source has said that Afghanistan will soon send 30-35 carts of onion to the country, which has been loaded. Sources have said that due to the strong increase in onion prices in India, Afghan traders are excited to sell onion in the markets here and if the price of onion will be Rs 30 per kg here, the onion will continue to come from Afghanistan. Business sources have said that Afghani onion is currently being sold for Rs 30-35 per kg in Amritsar and Ludhiana.

When asked about the arrival of onions from Afghanistan to India via Pakistan, a top official of the Customs Department said that there is no restriction on the arrival of goods from Afghanistan. At the same time, Rajendra Sharma, a businessman of Delhi's Azadpur Mandi and President of the Onion Merchant Association, has told that in a day or two, Afghani onions will start coming in Delhi's Mandis too, which will further reduce the prices of onions.

so trade between India & Afghanistan via pakistan is going as usual , air space not banned for indian flights. Is so pakistani govt really angry on modi or is it just an eye wash for pakistani public consumption ?

When I saw IK's speech yesterday I was under the impression that they have banned trade from kabul via pakistan but looks like these speeches aren't meant to taken literally..

What's news in this? Pak specifically said we will allow Afghan exports to India so as not to effect Afghan people due to Pak-India fight.

First develop your intellectual level then try to act smart.

I don't need to act I am already smart :sarf2

Jokes apart so its nice that they are still allowing trade & not doing any air space ban too. Good stuff

Pakistan can't ban Indian and other overflights during peacetime. They burnt their fingers so bad earlier in the year that they will never consider the option again. It's another matter to stop one-off Modi / Kovind flights - again as always for domestic PR.

oh we will ban the air space but not now ... it will be on our terms .... wait for it.

It was done in Feb too

Yes it was, and what happened in Pakistan ATC circles between Feb and July will ensure that it won't happen again in a hurry. It was a decision taken on the spur of the moment and then needlessly dragged on all the while while it boomeranged and cannon-balled on Pakistani aviation.

I am interested in this. Why do you feel Pakistan burnt their fingers banning Indian flights?

I'm on mobile right now, let me get back on PC and start a fresh thread to elaborate soon.

Yeah same. It had no effect on our airlines since negligible amount of flights go over India anyway. Most of our routes are towards the West.

Pakistan has an existing transit trade deal with Afghanistan which allows them to export to India via Wagah. However, they can not import from India, so the trucks either go back empty, or with Pakistani goods.

Anyways, I thought India developed Chabahar port for this reason, why dont the onions come from that route?

I mean, if Indians can cancel concerts organized by Pakistanis, the least they can do is circumvent Pakistan while importing onions.

I believe the financial impact on the CAA were the lost overflight fees which amounted to about $50 million during this period.

As an Indian let your Bhaijaan be the first to thank Pakistan for allowing important trade between neighbouring nations.

May common sense prevail.

Modi must show wisdom like Imran and reciprocate.

Pakistan must too get the tomatoes they richly deserve.

Because we banned ALL flights from all airlines during that period. Not just India's. The ban now would be only to Indian flights.

pakistan suffered losses upto $50 million dollars due to last air space ban it seems india suffered too as well.

Trade, air space ban should not be done as it affects normal ppl from both countries.

my hero brother that was mostly due to all flights banned in paksitan .we have negligible flights flying over india.india have much more flying over pakistan.get your facts right.

Pakistan can make money by levying tariffs on Afghan and Indian products crossing the border.

Many thanks to Pakistan for providing gateway for this trade. Where are my countrymen who are consuming these onions without any shame without thanking Pakistan? :inti
