ISLAMABAD .:
Only 7,419 overseas Pakistanis got themselves registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to vote in the by-elections being held in 37 constituencies of national and provincial assemblies on October 14, according to an ECP statement issued Monday.

The ECP had launched i-voting pilot project on September 1 to allow overseas Pakistanis vote in the by-polls.

Under the ECP’s prescribed criteria, each overseas Pakistani having National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), Machine Readable Passport (MRP) and whose name was in the voters list for the by-polls in any of 37 constituencies, was eligible for registration as voters.

By-polls: Last day for registration of overseas Pakistanis

As many as 631,909 people met the criteria and were eligible to be registered as voters for the by-polls.

Out of which 7,419 participated in the voters’ registration process to cast vote in by-polls through internet.

The ECP said it would issue passes to the registered voters from October 10 to October 14, which would allow them to vote in by-elections.

ECP has announced by-election schedule for 11 National Assembly, 13 Punjab Assembly, Nine Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and two seats each from Sindh and Balochistan Assemblies.

The system was a total failure. Most overseas Pakistanis either don't take a Pakistani passport, or they don't have access to it. Many who did have a passport still couldn't register due to some stupid errors.

From conducting my own survey based on Uber drivers, I think this is good news for PTI and bad news for PMLN/PPP...

The main culprit is the requirement of Pakistani passport. Most of the overseas Pakistanis have NICOP (National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis) instead. And NICOP should be enough to get registered for voting. Why is Pakistani passport also needed? I see no purpose in requiring Pakistani passport also from overseas Pakistanis when they already have NICOP. Overseas Pakistanis would not pay for something which is logically not needed. Change the damn rule ECP.

Per constituency will be very little to make real impact. The overseas voters won't be counted together with Pakistani voters for each constituency . They will check first that website is not hacked or database not fabricated then they will add OP voters to total.

I had both NICOP and Pakistani passport and still wasn't allowed to register. Flop system, expected better from NADRA.

This smacks of a two-tier system biased against overseas Pakistanis as they are required a passport IN ADDITION to NICOP. They should reverse this stupid passport requirement to vote.

People are being harsh. This is the first time so failures are expected. At least it is somethkgn

There are only 630,000 overseas 18+ Pakistanis out there?

I did not that this thing is live and available for by-election...Let me registry and spread the word for folks here in US ;-)

Close to Double of that number, exists only in US. Maybe they have some restricted criteria, maybe I am not eligible as well. I wonder if US citizens are allowed?

Pakistanis didn't care once the main elections happened about this one.

Come 5 years on, before the next main elections you'll these numbers go high up.

Mamoon your last 5 years posts about Overseas Pakistanis especially Youthias have been vindicated.

Look at the % of voters who registered :-) :-)

These overseas Youthias are the ones who are making Naya Pakistan/Riasat e Madeena on Facebook & Twitter ;-) ;-) yet do not want to vote for Establishment’s subservient PTI leaders.

Can you please stop embarassing yourself?

Most overseas Pakistanis were unable to register because we don't have Pakistan passports. The genius's at ECP decided that it was a great idea for them to make a passport AND a NICOP card a requirement. How many Pakistanis that are overseas citizens own a Pakistani passport? And then what about those labourers in the Gulf, who have their passports taken away from them by their employers? If anything, this seems like a delibirate ploy by the ECP to disenfranchise overseas Pakistani voters.

Many with Pakistani passports and NICOP still couldn’t register. This is a fact!
