His nephew speaking about the incident. Seems like Canadian police is just as trigger happy, at least more so than Europeans.

As someone who lives in Canada, I don't find Canadian cops that bad. They are much better than cops from USA.

Having said that, this incident was unfortunate. I hope a proper investigation will be done.

Abolishing police in Canada should be out of the equation (something many radical Liberals are vouching for).

I highly doubt Asians will protest. Brown folks don't get shot by cops a lot. This was an anomaly.

We get parking tickets and get harassed once in a while. Nothing more than that.

South Asian community isn't really targeted in the GTA based on race. I believe black Canadians have had issues with "carding" in the past (stopping and documenting random people on the street). They felt targeted in comparison to other races. But that's settled down since 2018.

Except Francophones are accepting of people once they adopt their way of life, French identity is more important than skin color. English-Canadians especially from the prairies have more an American style racism, you'll only get when you grow up in a white neighborhood, Desis from Toronto have never socialized with the Connor's and Logan's of the world.

The only reason I mention Quebec is that policing has been a documented issue among visible minorities there. Just due to the larger sample size. Although to be fair, even in Quebec the troubled communities (policing wise) were black Canadians and Arab Canadians rather than South Asians.

The Prairies might have their issues (never been there myself) but it's certainly not on a grand scale. South Asians just don't register in those areas in terms of crimes. Most of the focus seems to go towards aboriginals and how they're mistreated.

Although, I do think we're both forgetting Surrey, BC. They have serious gang issues among Desis there and could have different stories to tell about their experiences with the police.

From personal experience, Toronto's demographics have changed tremendously. When I was growing up in the mid-90s, there were only small pockets of South Asians even in the 905. Most South Asians would have grown up/lived in predominantly white communities unless they were settled in low-income areas. I don't think I ever heard about policing issues among the South Asian community growing up. The only thing anyone would talk about was getting racially profiled at the airport (post-2001) which is obviously an international problem at this point.

There was a protest in Malton on this and thT is pretty much it.

With that being said, Canada is not immune to racism. People are not flat out racist here (except some quebecers) but silent racism does exist almost in every single place, work, police, school, etc. NDP leader jagmeet singh might be a political year, but he did raise a good point recently on silent racism in the parliament.

My personal experience so far, growing up in Toronto, travelling almost everywhere in Canada, living in saskatchewan and then Alberta is very mixed. I have seen most racism in Quebec. Toronto and the GTA wasn’t so far behind, believe it or not, maybe because I spent the most time there. Surprisingly the prairies, specially saskatchewan and Alberta was very welcoming, and people are generally nice, even if they might be politically conservative. Vancouver wasn’t that great as well but still lags behind in racism for me than Quebec and GTA.

With that being said racism is still experienced in Canada, specially silent racism. In this case of Ejaz, I bet the police wouldn’t have shot if it was some white person. I remember similar things happened (non mental issue though) in 2011 when Sammy yatim was brutally murdered by a cop who opened fire 7 times on the teenager, while the teen was dropping his knife and surrendering. Luckily there was massive protest, ans the racist piece of Sht cop was arrested. Similar protest is required now in Ejaz’s case.

I personally know this man , I saw him several times in Mosque as well as in community centre library . He was a good person. Sad incident .

Silent racism does exist in Canada. Perhaps not as much in Canada as in the US. The only difference is that in the US people are blunt and upfront about it and in Canada people smile in your face but inside they may not like you
