Our team and cricket is a shambles. How do we get out of it?

It's all too often, every tournament now, where fans have to get their calculators out and pray for that 0.005% (no) chance of qualifying.

There is no accountability. Same players will resume again and our cricket is trapped in a relentless cycle of poor performances.

When noise gets too much, PCB will sack the coaching staff or replace the captain but nothing truly changes. Their decisions make us a laughing stock on the global stage.

Or, have we now, as fans, accepted this and are subconciously content with it? Do we now expect failure, yet still hope for that occasional win, to remind us of the golden days?

So how can this be fixed?
  1. Team revamp.
  2. Coaching staff revamp.
  3. PCB overhaul.
  4. Something else?
Should all team (selections, captain, coach) duties of the PCB be replaced by an external entity?

Had you selected 2nd spinner these question would have not been in the picture pak would have qualified for semis by now all you had to do was select sufiyan or sajid on these tracks they would have win today game for sure.

First thing that needs to be done is a mass protest outside PCB HQ.

Next step would be to boycott home games, until they do the surgery.

If that doesn’t work, protest at the matches. Bring in your banners. If you see any pro Rizbar banners, jump the fools.

Cause mayhem, because right now nothings going to change within the team. We’ll see coaches sacked, selectors replaced etc and we’ll still be stuck with the same players that are holding us back.

It’s time to burn the TukTuk academy.

Bring out your effigies, your molotovs, and tv’s.

Unfortunately, the public have given up.

I remember the days when people would chase them with slippers. :)

leadership group must be changed completely..firstly the selectors who do not have courage to pick younger players or back them.. hire a professional foreign or pakistani coach but give hime a fixed tenure of two years..and need a captain who palys modern cricket , if we dont have one then let coach have more power than captain but pick some modern coach who has white ball experience some like mike hesson, andy flower or trevor bayliss..

The way Pak cricket is run, it is so foeign to the foreigners. They don't last.

The politics inside there must be next level. Unimaginable.

How do you thrive?

They need a complete overhaul. No short term fix for this mess. Team has been declining for years.

The good players we had were ruined with the wrong treatment of injuries.

Too much T20 and no 1st class cricket has killed the very little they had.

Imagine Ihsanullah, Shaheen, Naseem played 1st class cricket and they got professional treatment. They would be a decent team.

Selection won't improve them as talent isn't there sadly

What kind of complete overhaul do you have in mind?

You need skillfull, fearless and intelligent players.

And I really hate this mentality of having certain scores in mind before the game is started. Today Rizwan said they wanted to score 280. I mean what world is this guy living in? He doesn't have WC bowlers to defend this total. And the way India and modern day teams play 280 is far from enough.

If you have, bring in players who understand modern day cricket or it's only a matter of time before cricket goes the hockey way. Maybee it already has, but the good thing is with such a big populations you can allways find 11 decent players if you select on merit.

Imam, Faheem and Khushdil are parchi players and this system also needs to go.

you realize that this is international sport and that you cannot magically produce a world beating team by protesting at PCB HQ?

I agree.

I would add Babar/Rizwan to that list too. They are past it but still control the team due to hype.

You need high calibre players.

Look at Gill/Rohit at the start of their innings today. They showed intent and had shots to match.

Our openers seemed to struggle with picking line and length quickly enough. When they do, they can only offer a defensive shot.

You need to train players who have natural talent to play like this. I don't think this is happening in Pakistan.

First step....SELF RESPECT .

Playing your home match in another country because the opposition demand it , is an embarrassment to the whole nation.

With this pathetic and cowardly mentality you are already way behind before the toss.

Get a cricket board which doesn't change with elections and whose funds are eaten up by corruption.

Finally bring in new talent, ita not a London boys club but a merit based sports team .

Pakistan deserves this humiliation,

I agree. It's an embarrassment.

The truth of the matter is that, the Indian board has too much power and money. And money talks.

When you have no other board fighting your corner then you have very little room for manoeuvre.

I'm not defending the decision - I just think the remaining options were not very attractive.

You really are clueless.

You wouldn't have won this game with a 240 score selecting even Shane Warne on this pitch.

How will you rate your team in each format on a scale of 1 to 10

ICC ranking

Test - 7
ODI - 3
T20 - 7

Thats what you think ... but the reality is that every promising player has been tried and has been owned when playing against India.

While it's true kicking out Rizbar might not lead to a winning 11, it is also true that playing Rizbar makes no difference to outcome of the match.

So what's the point of repeating the same Rizbar team?

Better to start afresh.

Well you clearly dont know how cricket works everyone knows you play 2 spinners in asia and match would have been won its that easy to understand man nothing hard about this you are were defending 240 with 2 spinners i would see how india would have chased that look how abrar bowled give only 20 odd runs in his 10 overs.

I always call spade a spade.

Why not start with the Chairman? How about we have an actual elected Chairman that's not a political appointment? That will be a good starting point.

In Tests - Pakistan has abandoned Fast bowlers completely. Out of last 80 wickets 78 taken by spinners. In ODIs - they have abandoned spinners.

There was no need to attack Abrar because score was 240.

Why would they need to attack the second Warne if the target is 240?

Shaheen, Haris and Naseem were enougn to give 200 runs in their 30 overs maybe even more.

Listen.

Cricket is simple for 200 years.

Don't over complicate it.

The more you score, the more the chances of winning the game.

Bhai this too shall pass but it’s important to have honest people with good intentions at the key positions.

Politics is so deeply ingrained in every aspect of the system—how can we possibly remove it?

What would it take to change to an elected Chairman?

The government would have to start that process. There is too much benefit to control cricket - why would they do that?

Are we stuck in a rut?

We give too much Importance to Tuktuk! We give awards to Misbah … Akhtar was correct. Our players needs new hero’s! Cause Misbah tactics Pakistan ain’t going no where with tuktuk

Agreed but thats not how good teams are built ... for instance India did not build a good team by kicking out Shastri and Srikant overnight lol

While I believe a nation changes when they decide themselves. You do need an honest leader up top with power who has the right intention and skills to inspire and fix the country. A man who would put merit above all.

There may be an answer but this is not the thread or platform even to talk about it.

Sure I understand but don't expect to win anything with this mentality.

Great sporting teams are top down. Pakistan thousands of potentially elite cricketers but the sport in the land is used make money and propaganda for politics, sucees is the bottom of the list

Abdullah Shafique
Usman Khan (hack blah x3)
Kamran Ghulam
Tayyab Tahir
Salman Agha (c) (5th bowler)
Mohammad Haris (wk)
Irfan Niazi
Khushdil Shah (4th)
Amir Jamal
Mohammad Wasim
Abrar Ahmed

This XI would whitewash our current XI.

4. I noticed one of the commies mentioning fitness of the Pak team during the game. I know this is one for the ages but it seems like everyone has improved drastically in the is facet while we're still lagging way behind.

I think we would be able to improve our performances 10-20% overall if started acting like athletes and leaving the dehati mindset behind. The elite mindset and physical prowess of the top teams has rendered any the unpredictability tag of Pak team defunct in the modern era.

A couple of boundaries and catches could have been taken had the fitness levels been up to standard. Not capable of doing the basics and teams will punish you.

Players aren’t just expected to be fit; they’re dropped if they don’t meet standards. Pakistan, on the other hand, still allows cricketers to get by on talent alone (I use that term loosely). The game has moved on, but Pakistan hasn't.

This is exactly why Pakistan needs to diversify its talent pool.

The current crop of players come from poor and uneducated backgrounds. There’s nothing wrong with them, the problem is that’s all that Pakistan cricket has and these guys won’t have a scooby doo about match awareness, game IQ, elite mentality and fitness.

You can’t blame them these guys don’t know how to deal with the spotlight and new found fame.

Every day is a new one in sports. It's time to move on.

There are lots of structural issues that need to be addressed.

But one of their biggest issues has to do with a lack of clarity in roles. This is where the team is getting hurt the most because you can't build a modern side without players fitting specific roles.

Pakistan can't have "versatile" players right now with its player pool. When you choose players like that, you end up with a nightmare addition like Faheem Ashraf.

They have to start by looking at choosing players based on specific roles. For example, you need attacking openers at the top and if they get injured, the guy coming in should also be of a similar type. It doesn't matter if Imam is averaging more in list A, if he doesn't match the role you don't select him.

A team that has the right players in the right spots can always punch above its weight. This is the mindset Pakistan will need and please get rid of the star culture. It's pathetic and undeserving. This is not one big royal family where we need randomly declared kings and princes (and I say this as a king myself).

On a grander scheme, they need to move away from accumulators. You can have one on the team. That's it. Running four in a row like they did against India is low-IQ stuff. To be fair, there should be none in modern XIs but sometimes you look to add a safety net in case things go wrong.

Whether you want it to be Babar, Rizwan, or someone else is up to you but no one else. All of your other batsmen need to be batsmen who can play at a higher strike rate. This doesn't mean you have to be Shahid Afridi but even someone like Salman Ali Agha is a good example.

It's bare bones right now no doubt about it.

The ODI locks are basically: Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, and Salman Ali Agha

That's it.

All of the other players need their roles re-assessed before bringing some of them back. If they fit, it's fine. If not, it's time to send them back to domestic cricket with tips on what they need to work on to fit the team's needs.

I know Pakistani fans will think there's no one out there and this team has no chance. But it does have a chance and it will come down to accepting reality while being willing to cut a few "star" players to replace them with guys that fit the right roles. Also when you bring in domestic players, give them the roles they did well in. You don't take a middle-order batsman and after a few matches make him an opener!

Only Fakhar, Saim and Agha make the cut.

Rest should be sacked.

India is a first world cricket nation now in terms of fitness and fielding in comparison to Pakistan. Literally every Indian fielder is capable of scoring direct hits.

Pakistan is one of the most unfit teams in the world where Cliffe Deacon has become a Pakistani. Our boys don't have the self discipline to be professional when it comes to dietary and training habits, our boys only do well under tough task masters

Youth cricket is not in good order. That is why Pakistan is struggling at the senior level. U19 world cup achievement is woeful. They have to inspect why they are not good there.

It’s Aqib javed who has abandoned it as his gold children Hairs and Shaheen do not want to play test cricket

I suggested four years ago to remove Babar, warning that he would become a major issue. Now, he has turned into an even bigger problem. One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch, and he has negatively influenced four other apples Shaheen, Naseem, Rizwan, and Rauf.

Star power needs to go players should be selected based on performance and merit

Before aqib came we were world beaters
Who is responsible for the other 7 tournaments we lost since babar and rizwan has taken over?

I asked DeepSeek AI a similar question. Here was the answer:

===================================

The Pakistan cricket team has a rich history and immense talent, but consistent performance has been a challenge. To improve, the team can focus on several key areas:

1. Strengthen Domestic Cricket Structure

  • Improve infrastructure: Invest in better facilities, pitches, and training grounds across the country.
  • Competitive domestic leagues: Ensure the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and other tournaments are highly competitive to prepare players for international cricket.
  • Focus on player development: Provide coaching, fitness programs, and mentorship for young players.

2. Invest in Coaching and Support Staff

  • Hire world-class coaches: Bring in experienced coaches for batting, bowling, and fielding to address technical weaknesses.
  • Mental conditioning: Employ sports psychologists to help players handle pressure and improve focus.
  • Data-driven analysis: Use technology and data analytics to study opponents and improve game strategies.

3. Improve Fitness and Fielding Standards

  • Emphasize fitness: Implement strict fitness regimes to ensure players are in top physical condition.
  • Fielding drills: Dedicate time to fielding practice, as fielding has often been a weak point for Pakistan.
  • Agility and endurance training: Focus on quick reflexes and stamina to compete at the highest level.

4. Build a Strong Batting Lineup

  • Consistent top order: Develop reliable openers and middle-order batsmen who can anchor the innings.
  • Adapt to conditions: Train batsmen to perform well in different conditions (e.g., seaming pitches, spin-friendly tracks).
  • Mental toughness: Encourage batsmen to build innings and avoid reckless shots under pressure.

5. Develop a Versatile Bowling Attack

  • Nurture young talent: Identify and groom young fast bowlers and spinners.
  • Variety in bowling: Develop bowlers who can adapt to different formats and conditions (e.g., swing, pace, spin).
  • Injury management: Ensure proper workload management to prevent injuries to key bowlers.

6. Focus on Leadership and Team Culture

  • Stable captaincy: Choose a captain who can inspire and lead by example, with a long-term vision.
  • Team unity: Foster a positive team environment where players support each other.
  • Accountability: Hold players accountable for their performances and discipline.

7. Enhance Performance in Test Cricket

  • Patience and technique: Train batsmen to play long innings and bowlers to maintain consistency over long spells.
  • Pitch preparation: Prepare pitches that offer a balance between bat and ball to develop all-round skills.
  • Focus on winning series: Set clear goals for Test match performances, especially in overseas conditions.

8. Improve T20 and ODI Strategies

  • Power-hitting: Develop batsmen who can score quickly in the death overs.
  • Flexible bowling plans: Train bowlers to execute yorkers, slower balls, and variations effectively.
  • Field placements: Use innovative field placements and strategies to outsmart opponents.

9. Learn from Other Teams

  • Study successful teams: Analyze how top teams like India, Australia, and England manage their players and strategies.
  • Adopt best practices: Implement successful methods from other cricketing nations, such as fitness standards, data analysis, and player rotation.

10. Encourage Grassroots Development

  • School and club cricket: Invest in grassroots programs to identify and nurture talent from a young age.
  • Women’s cricket: Support the growth of women’s cricket to expand the talent pool and promote the sport.
  • Financial incentives: Provide better financial rewards and job security for domestic players to attract more talent.

11. Address Off-Field Issues

  • Transparent selection: Ensure selection is based on merit and performance, not favoritism or politics.
  • Player welfare: Provide better contracts, insurance, and support systems for players.
  • Stable board leadership: Ensure the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is managed effectively and with a long-term vision.

12. Play More International Cricket

  • Schedule competitive series: Play more matches against top teams to gain experience in different conditions.
  • A tours and exposure: Send emerging players on A tours to gain experience in foreign conditions.

By addressing these areas, the Pakistan cricket team can build a stronger, more consistent, and competitive squad capable of performing well across all formats. Consistency, planning, and a focus on long-term development are key to sustained success.

This is exactly why Pakistan needs to diversify its talent pool.

A lot of NBA stars come from single parent, low income households and their touching money and fame that these cricketers can only dream of. Now with NIL and social media, a lot of young basketball players are making millions before even making the league, yet they still manage to put in the work to reach elite status. LeBron is a billionaire, and at 40 years old is still a top 10-12 player in the sport - he never had money growing up, barely completed his HS education and was the most hyped prospect in the history of the sport at 15 years of age.

A lot of the stuff you mention is all cultural and natural ability related. Shaheen absolutely has the potential to be the 2nd best fast bowler that the country has ever produced. However, because of the Pakistani culture of hero worship and innate culture of laziness he has never put in the work to fulfil that ability. He's treated as a god despite literally zero significant accolades at the international level nor has he contributed to any noteworthy team success. He's made zero strides in his game since 2021-22 and instead has regressed. He has the money to be able to afford the best trainers, dieticians, take time away from playing nonsense leagues and actually work on his craft etc. and yet he's still built like a 16 year old boy and has actively refused to acknowledge that he's gotten worse over time.

The drive needed to be the best has almost nothing to do with education. Pakistani culture naturally doesn't breed that drive, and instead views marriage and kids as the ultimate barometer of success.

We have to get rid of PARCHIS and POLITICAL influences first of all. Need changes in the higher management. There is no way Naqvi and co is gonna win anything

Exactly this, they won a series in Australia and SA with a set of players and they changes the winning squad to bring in Saud Shakeel, Happy Heart and Faheem Ashraf from nowhere... And these changes are of course political influences and parchis..

Who gave them the courage and audacity to do that in an ICC event that is happening in home soil after nearly 30 yrs...

LOL I laugh when I think Khushdil is our leading run getter in this ct.
I never thought a hack would be our leading run scorer in an icc tournament.
