Oxford professor Tariq Ramadan taken into custody by French police

Oh dear, another religious preacher who lectures us in public about morality and ethics yet in his private life he goes around (allegedly) raping women who came to him for support and advice.

The prominent Swiss academic Tariq Ramadan, a professor of contemporary Islamic studies at the University of Oxford, has been taken into custody by French police following accusations of rape.

A judicial source confirmed to Reuters that Ramadan was taken into custody on Wednesday. A preliminary investigation was opened after two women filed police complaints against him late last year, accusing him of rape.

If he did what he has been accused of than justice needs to be served. Sexual harassment all over the news. Hollywood, religious professors, etc. Is it that hard to keep it in your pants?

Mostly nobody practices what they preach as it is very hard. Neither religious nor non religious people. Its just that the truth hits the religious people harder because they mostly harp on about how they get their morals and scruples from religion.

Yes it actually is for many.

Tariq Ramadan’s accuser Henda Ayari’s story close to collapsing

Tariq Ramadan’s rape accuser’s story is close to collapsing after it’s revealed that she was in fact at her brother’s wedding on the night she claims he raped her, according to Le Point. [1]

Henda Ayari, who accused prominent Muslim professor, Tariq Ramadan of sexual assault, recently changed her version of events. Initially Ms Ayari alleged that she was assaulted in March 2012 at the Crown Plaza in Paris; a claim which was always challenged by professor Ramadan’s legal team. [2]

However, it later emerged that the accuser had apparently mixed up her dates, claiming that the incident took place in May that same year, at a different Paris hotel altogether.

The case has now taken another extraordinary turn where the accuser claimed to have been raped by the professor on the evening of 26th May 2012, Henda Ayari was in fact purportedly at the wedding of her younger brother in the Seine-Maritime area. [3]

These new revelations certainly challenge the accusations made by the former “Salafist”, (now a secular and feminist activist), against the Swiss intellectual. The accuser has apparently been pictured at her brother’s wedding the same night she claims to have been raped.

According to Le Point, the accusers brother said:

“I cut the ties, but I see her from time to time when there is a wedding in the family,” he continues. […] Our age difference has always meant that we have never been close. But since all these stories, I do not want to have anything to do with her anymore. […] I want to tell you that when I heard in the media that she had filed a complaint, honestly, I told myself that she would succeed in having what she has always been striving for; fame. She has always dreamed of being a known figure. For me, she is an opportunist. On the rape in question, I do not believe it, but, well, I do not know.”

Asked about the specific date of May 26, 2012, Henda Ayari’s younger brother said that “it was the day of [his] marriage”. “It took place in Petit-Couronne, 7 or 8 kilometers from Rouen. […] The party began around 6pm or 7pm.

“I remember that my sister was here that night. She was with her three children. I cannot tell you what time she left. […] According to my recollection, she was present and smiling, he testifies before the police officers of the Crim [The Criminal Unit]. It seems to me that we see her on a video of the marriage which is copied on a DVD. “

“I know that psychologically she is crazy. She is unbalanced. […] she’s a big mythomaniac. She is manipulative. She has several personalities. […] In any case, the date of May 26, 2012 does not stand up.” [4]

“In the aftermath of these statements, the investigators retrieved two photographic snapshots of the wedding on May 26th featuring Henda Ayari. The brother also confirms that his sister was in fact present at this ceremony from “8 pm to 3 am and was sitting at the table with friends of the bride.”

Professor Ramadan continues to be held in detention in France after voluntarily attending police questioning earlier this year. [5] The professor’s health continues to deteriorate as a result of multiple sclerosis and neuropathy.

Despite medical examinations and multiple physicians confirming that his health condition is incompatible with detention, [6] the French authorities have held him under solitary confinement and initially denied him visitation rights for the first 45 days – with no justification for such treatment. [7]

“Tariq was walking the day he entered prison, today he comes to the visiting room in a wheelchair.” [8]

It remains to be seen whether this latest revelation will lead the judges to reconsider Professor Tariq Ramadan’s continued inexplicable detention.

A Muslim intellectual is a threat to the secular French state. He is not being afforded basic human rights, they'll do anything to bring him down.

Disgusting he is being held on false charges. He should be released immediately now due to these revelations.

Not surprised. In UK as well its become a fashion to accuse Asian/Muslim men of nonsense this. There are two cases I know off where the stories turned out to be false and the accusers wanted to cash in on the grooming-case-hysteria.

Yes it happens but the police should be a lot smarter before ruining peoples lives based on accusations without any evidence in some cases. This case in France is a perfect example, the woman is well known as anti-Muslim. She has made up these serious allegations to stop him from talking and educating French people. We are luck in the UK, the police dont have agendas, cant say the same about France.

The Police are only interested in conviction rates. The higher they are the more funding and promotions. Also, the accusers have no risk. Eg follow the following scenario (this is for UK):

-Woman accuses man of rape, at this point the man will be arrested formally and the following will happen immediately:
1) all his laptops, mobile phones from his property will be taken
2) if he has any kids under 18 he will not be allowed to stay in the house for the duration of the case and this is before he is even charged, never mind guilty
3) his employers will be informed and if he is a doctor/dentist/nurse he will be suspended

The time it takes for a man to be charged after arrest is between 9-15 months. During that time he will not be allowed to stay anywhere where there are kids, even his own kids, he cannot work so is absolutely screwed. And ofcourse if his name ends up in the press then that's a double insult.

After the above time period he is either charged or case dismissed. If he is charged and found not guilty then the accuser will simply get to walk away, all with the package of anonymity. And if the accuser wins its a £20,000 windfall. So its no-lose game for women who make false accusations.

This is all true for UK as I worked in Law for 3 years before switching careers.

Add in the Asian and you can see how much of a problem it can be. That's why you read cases on BBC where people are exonerated and why London police decided to investigate all rape claims again.

It is scary as any woman can make these allegations for any reason.

It's best to stay away from dodgy women. :)

I agree, also I wasn't surprised when I heard about Tariq Ramadan. He seems like a decent bloke and it all seemed dodgy. Which it now appears it is!

Damn, that is a very one-sided law there. Any man can get screwed by just a simple accusation by scornful woman regardless of whether he did something unlawful or not.

If you spend money investigating you will find out that likely she was paid by certain Gulf states who consider Tariq Ramadan's background to be the worst of that of any group in the world.

It won't and doesn't get reported because of the myth that rape gets only 9% of convictions. It does not. Anyone who is charged with rape the conviction rate is 68%.

Ofcourse I am not saying there isn't a problem with rape, women also get abused. But in places like the West an accusation of rape especially abusing a kid can threaten a person's life. I used to be involved in a platform helping falsely accused and there were times people almost committed suicide at being labelled a Paedo. Even though it was only an accusation, they were not guilty.

You might have heard that musk recently called a british diver pedo on twitter. In your opinion, What repercussions will it have on the diver in england ?

It won't much as Musk has taken it back but the slur itself is very damaging. In UK if you are labelled a paedo it becomes very difficult. There have been many instances, the reports are online, where people were labelled a paedo and killed or severely injured. One man was burnt alive and it turned out he nothing, he was completely innocent. If someone is accused of being a paedo and turns out innocent then the slur still remains. As people think ''oh still he must have done something to be associated by it''.

I am not downplaying abuse ofcourse, what I am saying is false accusers do not get press and the damage of being falsely accused is costly. Last few months it was widely reported a lot of people committed suicide, and the accusers? Nothing, they walk off free with anonymity.

Swiss open rape case against Tariq Ramadan

Prosecutors in Geneva have opened a rape and sexual misconduct investigation against Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, who has been detained in France since February on separate rape charges, Swiss media reported on Sunday.

The Tribune de Geneve newspaper quoted justice ministry spokesman Henri Della Casa as saying that authorities had decided to open a formal criminal inquiry into allegations that Ramadan raped a woman in a Geneva hotel in 2008.

“I confirm the opening of an inquiry,” the paper quoted Della Casa as saying, a key step that indicated the authorities believed the allegations merit further investigation.

The accuser lodged her complaint in April.

“The prosecutors and Geneva police have worked quickly and worked well,” Romain Jordan, the lawyer representing Ramadan’s Swiss accuser, told AFP in an email.

He described the decision to open a criminal inquiry as “a major advance” that “demonstrates the seriousness of the allegations made by our client.”

Ramadan, a Swiss citizen and Oxford University professor whose grandfather founded Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement, has not yet been interviewed by Swiss prosecutors.

Jordan said that following the opening of a criminal case, Swiss investigators will now have to travel to France to hear Ramadan’s side of the alleged rape.

The 56-year-old scholar, a prominent and controversial figure within Islam, has denied criminal wrongdoing in connection with the French charges and insisted that all relations with his two accusers were fully consensual.

Earlier this year, French judges dismissed a third rape allegation against Ramadan by a French Muslim woman who accused him of raping her nine times between 2013 and 2014.

Tariq Ramadan: Oxford professor facing rape charges granted conditional release

Tariq Ramadan, the prominent Swiss scholar held in France since February on charges he raped two women, on Thursday won conditional release as the allegations continued to be investigated, his lawyer said.

A Paris appeals court ruled in favour of Ramadan, a professor of contemporary Islamic studies at the University of Oxford, after the 56-year-old academic had made an impassioned argument for release. His bail was set at €300,000 (£267,000) and requires him to hand over his passport and report to police once a week.

“Where would I flee to?” he asked in his hearing, his first public appearance since his incarceration.

Ramadan denies charges he raped the women in 2009 and 2012. One accuser is a disabled woman identified in media reports as “Christelle” and the other is the feminist activist Henda Ayari.

But last month Ramadan was forced to drop assertions he had no sexual contact at all with the women after an expert recovered 399 text messages between him and “Christelle”, some of which detailed violent sexual fantasies. Ramadan subsequently said the sexual contact was “consensual”.

In court, Ramadan said he had no intention of becoming a fugitive from justice, and said his multiple sclerosis meant he had difficulty walking after being locked up for 10 months.

“I will remain in France and defend my honour and my innocence,” he told the judges in what was his fourth bid to secure his freedom.

“I would like you to make your decision from your conscience, not because my name is Tariq Ramadan and I’m demonised in this country,” he said.

He portrayed his accusers as liars bending media attention in the case to their benefit, asking: “Who has instrumentalised the #MeToo movement?”

Ramadan, a married father of four whose grandfather founded Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, was a professor at Oxford until he was forced to take leave when the rape allegations surfaced at the height of the #MeToo movement late last year.
