"Pak always go into tournaments as underdogs, don’t think it'll be same this time" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

Looking ahead to next year’s World Cup, Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said: “The World Cup is important for all teams. Our first match is against the West Indies, the first match is always important, so all our preparations are geared towards that match and the tournament. We are trying to iron out our deficiencies during this period.

“The World Cup is one event in which the world is watching you and everyone is following you. The importance of players is realised during this crunch time. It makes heroes and super stars of players. Pakistan always go into tournaments as underdogs but don’t think it will be the same this time because people remember that we have won the Champions Trophy.”

Isn’t some of the best results Pakistan got when they were underdogs? Why Sarfraz wants to change that perception?

Hopefully Babar Azam hits the ground running with a customary ton against the West Indies.

Underdog = you aren't favorites

You aren't favorites = you are't the best team

Hence, underdog = you aren't the best team

"Why does Sarfraz want to change that???"

Pakistan are not favorites, but their not big underdogs either, i would say in between both, alot will depend on the team they select as well. For me the big favs for this tournament would have to be England this time around.

If Pakistan play like they did in the Champions Trophy we are certainly capable. I have no words for how good we played. We were absolutely clinical against England and India, two of the best ODI sides in the world.

Yes. 4 wins in CT, and Pakistan aren’t underdogs.

Few but Pakistanis would rate PAK’s chances over any of the five teams above them in the rankings.

Rain, shocking showings from other teams, Howlers without a review left, and maybe they can sneak ahead of NZ, SA. They certainly won’t win more matches than IND, AUS, ENG.

If I had to make a wish, I’d wish for Pakistan to win. But as it stands there’s at least 5 teams that are better.

No one can seriously expect WI (barely made it out of the WC Qualifiers) AFG, and SL to make the semis. Bangladesh are the dangerous and under-rated side this time around and it’s not impossible they’ll make the semis.

And if Amir and/or Hasan Ali get injured, we will need to hope that duas can make the ball reverse early on. And may even struggle to beat WI/AFG.

What are you saying?

AUS has one of the worst WL ratio since 2015 in ODIs even with Smith and Warner.

SA has all aged retiring players and has not been a force in ODIs too.

IND,NZ,ENG ar better teams though

Can't check stats, but even if AUS have the worst W/L ratio, but I just don't rate Pakistan just because of a brief hot streak in the CT.

If Pakistan can make semis without a lot of help, that's when I think they deserve the kind of respect some Pakpassionaters think the team deserves.

At the end of the day, I'd want Pakistan to win but after three decades of watching them, I've learned that my wishes have usually been out of touch with the reality of the PAK team and how they measure up against tough opposition.
