Islamabad: Javelin star Arshad Nadeem made Pakistan proud when he claimed gold medal in the ongoing 13th South Asian Games (SAG) with a throw of 86.48 metre in Kathmandu, Nepal — becoming first athlete from the country in decades to directly qualify for the next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

Arshad was followed by India’s Shivpal Singh, who earned silver with an 84.16m throw. Sri Lanka’s Sumedha Jagath with a 74.97m throw finished third to take bronze.

In a video message, Nadeem expressed delight at the achievement. “I’m really happy because I’ve done a very good throw. It is a new national as well as SAG record,” he said.

The 2018 Asian Games bronze medallist said he was thankful to General Akram Sahi, the president of Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) for extending all type of support to him to accomplish the target. “My trainer Imtiaz Hussain Bukhari has been imparting rigorous training to me,” he said. “(Prior to SAG), they has sent me for a six-month training in Malaysia and now I’m being sent to China for another training programme to prepare for Tokyo Olympics.”

The Silver medalist at Rio Olympics had the throw of 85.38, Arshad Nadeem today reached 86.29.

Congrats larkay.... may you always keep the chand sitara flying high and mighty

Arshad is a good competitor to Neeraj Chopra, who does not participate in SAG, but has gone above 88m.

Good to see two world class throwers from our region.

I remember him from the previous Asian Games where Neeraj set the games record and Indian NR with 88+m throw. Arshad got bronze medal ahead of a Taiwanese thrower who was the favorite in that event. Was amazed by his performance there because I don't think Pakistani athletes enjoy the guidance of world class coaches, he did it on his own despite the system.

Great job by the lad, top throw here. In Rio not a single Pakistani qualified on merit, now not only has this young man qualified on merit but he has thrown down the gauntlet to other top javelin throwers. Will be interesting to see whether Pakistan can win a bronze in this event, finishing top 2 may be beyond his reach but you never know. Even if he qualifies for the finals, that will be a historic day in Pakistan's sports history. This is the best news coming out of Pakistan sports this year, hope he is honoured by his countrymen.

Also on their is others who have qualified for the Olympics 2020 directly so far aside for Nadeem we have

Usman khan who qualified for equestrian Indivual event

In shooting we have three
Ghulam Joseph
Ghulam mustafa Bashir
Mohammad Khalil Akhtar

The Athletics Federation of India was praised for congratulating Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, after the javelin thrower won the gold medal at the South Asian Games and qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. "Congrats #ArshadNadeem, javelin star of #Pakistan for winning gold at #SAGames2019 with a throw of 86.48m (PB & New Pakistani record) Qualified for #Tokyo2020 Olympics, first Pakistani athlete in decades to earn direct qualification," the Athletics Federation of India tweeted on Saturday, along with an old picture of Arshad Nadeem with India's javelin star Neeraj Chopra.

Nadeem threw 86.29 metres to secure the gold medal in Nepal, with India's Shivpal Singh finishing second. With the Olympic qualification standard set at 85 metres, he also secured direct qualification for the event in Tokyo next year, however, Shivpal missed out with a best effort of 84.43 metres.

The Athletics Federation of India's tweet won hearts and responses started flooding in.

"The best thing on internet today. This is actually message of love and peace," one Twitter user wrote.

"Respect from Pakistan. That's how should we grow together. Best of luck," another user tweeted.

"Really happy to see this post coming from your page... thank you from Pakistan," came another comment.

"Now, this is chivalry and standards of the conduct. How I wish if both Nations could learn to live with each other. Sending you guys love and hugs from Islamabad, Pakistan. God bless," a user tweeted.

"Sports has the power to kill all the animosity and hatred between our nations. Thank you," tweeted another user.

India have so far won 214 medals, including 110 golds and are leading the table in the ongoing South Asian Games with the highest medal tally, ahead of hosts Nepal and Sri Lanka. Pakistan have won 87 medals so far, with 23 golds.
