Just confirmed on the news channels. He´d liver cancer from what I understand.

A huge loss to Pakistan´s entertainment industry. He was mainly a TV drama actor but has even worked a few Pakistan films I think. He was a wonderful, wonderful actor. His voice had such a charm. I think it was, besides his acting skills, his voice which made him such a good performer. always wearing a serious look, and did all his roles with great efficiency. A really fine actor!

Logged in to post this. Rumors had been doing the rounds for days now, although his family had denied the reports. What they did confirm was that he was terminally ill, so it looked like it was only a matter of time, and the inevitable has now come to pass. Rest in Peace.

While he had played numerous notable roles over the years, the mysterious Dilawar in 1980's Waris remains the one he is best known for. If you talk to people who were of age back then, they will tell you how that serial was so widely watched, marketplaces and roads would empty from 8 PM to 9 PM.

I'll watch it again in his honor, starting here:

Very sad news.

As someone who grew up in the 90's I had heard a lot about Waaris but just recently watched it on youtube. Have to say it is now one of my all time favorite Pakistani drama serials. What struck me most was how understated and realistic everything was. No loud background music, no bombastic dialogues and still an almost perfect depiction of a newly independent country caught between feudalism and urbanization. Amjad Islam Amjad's later dramas are not even close to it. While most people remember it for Mehboob Alam's performance, I find the sons and grandsons of Ch.Hashmat some of the most memorable characters on Pakistani TV.

Personally I would remember Abid Ali more for his later work like the early 90's STN drama Dasht or Mehndi from the early 2000's.

Yes, I remember his Shams Shah character from NTM’s Dasht. I believe that was a serial he directed as well. That serial was important for showing the many dynamics of Baloch tribal society. It also established the pairing of Noman Ejaz and Atiqa Odho, which they then reprised in a few other serials.

Another role from that early 90s era was Seth Hashim in the serial Doosra Aasman, showing the rags-to-riches rise of a ruthless man.

As for Waris, I’ve always felt Firdous Jamal steals the show as Chaudhary Anwar: there’s pure evil in those eyes.

Abid Ali was very good actor and Waris was a master piece with all characters memorable and storyline with unbelievable suspense.
