ISLAMABAD: The government announced on Friday that it is easing travel restrictions in the hope of reviving tourism by offering visas on arrival to visitors from 50 countries and electronic visas to 175 nationalities.

The reforms, approved by the cabinet, would open up a new era for the tourism industry, which was devastated by terrorist violence after the Sept 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said.

“We have mountain tourism, we have beach tourism,” he told reporters in Islamabad, referring to Himalayan peaks and Arabian Sea beaches seldom visited by foreigners.

“Pakistan is a heaven for tourists.” the minister did not identify the countries that would benefit from the new rules but in December, he told Reuters that citizens of most European countries would be granted a visa on arrival.

Tourists would also be allowed to visit the politically sensitive Himalayan region of Kashmir and other northern areas, which now require special permission. The new rules would also ease travel restrictions on foreign journalists, Fawad Chaudhry said.

The new visa regime comes after some countries eased travel advisories on Pakistan in light of improvements in security.

Pakistan was last a prominent tourist destination in the 1970s when the “hippie trail” brought Western travellers through the apricot and walnut orchards of the Swat Valley and Kashmir on their way to India and Nepal.

Since then, deteriorating security and the imposition of a harsh interpretation of Islamic laws has chipped away at the number of visitors. But security has since improved dramatically in recent years, with terrorist attacks down sharply in the country of 208 million people.

The Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation said last year tourist arrivals rose to 1.75 million in 2017, media reported.

This is a pragmatic move and should be a big positive for tourism.

So UK citizens of Pakistani origin (eg children born to British Pakistani parents) traveling on British passports (maybe because they don't have a NADRA card or Pakistani passport) could simply obtain a visa upon arrival? What about the cost of the visa in such a case?

One advantage of entering Pakistan on a British passport I understand is that you then have full rights to obtain help from the UK Embassy in case you get into any problems with the Pakistani police or other authorities as you're traveling as a UK citizen. Whereas entering visa-fee on a NADRA card or Pakistani passport, even if you have UK citizenship, means that from the UK Embassy's point of view, you're a Pakistani citizen in Pakistan and the UK Embassy is limited in the help it can provide in case of problems with Pakistani authorities.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong as regards the above points.

You're right about the consular help thing for dual nationals.

Travelling abroad
As a dual national you cannot get diplomatic help from the British government when you are in the other country where you hold citizenship.

For example, if you hold both British and Chinese citizenship you cannot get diplomatic help from the UK when you’re in China.

Not a smart idea, Pakistan needs to secure it's borders and beef up homeland security. Granting visa on arrival should be reciprocated by any country that benefits from this, also harassing Pakistani citizens at foreign airports should also stop at any country that is part of this program.

Im pretty sure the Afghanistan, India etc. won't receive visa's on arrival.

Regarding reciprocity - beggars can't be chosers :)

I have to say I'm a bit dissapointed - several of these countries have no business being on this list.

Whereas - the likes of Australia, Canada, China (our greatest ally) and France have been excluded.

Also - what is the purpose of including Nepal?? Nepalese citizens already get visa free access to visiting Pakistan

We need people from all these countries to visit Pakistan to improve our image abroad and by doing this it increases the chances of Pakistan passport getting better treatment in the future. Someone has to take the first step and as we are the ones in need I think it is okay.

There must be more countries on this list as the press conference specifically stated that Indians with UK and US passports will be allowed visa on arrival yet I don't even see US and UK on the list.

Let’s be real - we are going to see little to no tourists from countries such as Angola, Barbados, Mozambique etc.

The inclusion of Germany, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea’s a step in the right direction but we should have worked with the dimpomatic channels of Canada, China, UK and France to ensure their citizens also had visa on arrival access...

Scrutiny of 2,249 online applications for Pakistan visa underway

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – National Data Base Registration Authority (NADRA) on Saturday has started process of scrutiny of online applications filed by foreign tourists for Pakistan visa.

The authority said that 2,249 people have applied for the visa so far, adding that 739 applications had been received during a single week starting from May 6.

It is to be mentioned here that NADRA had developed an e-visa service similar to the systems in the US and UK to issue visas to the potential travelers to Pakistan.

The then information minister, Fawad Ch had said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has provided online visa facility to residents of over 175 countries to boost tourism.

Interior ministry had also issued a notification enforcing a new visa policy for the nationals of 48 countries, who will be able to avail visa-on-arrival facility.

Under the policy, visa requirements were relaxed for 48 countries, including Brazil, Germany, Iran, Malaysia, Russia, Turkey, China, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Denmark.

However, India, the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK), and Afghanistan were not included in the list, which implies that citizens from these countries will not be facilitated under the policy.

EU issues scam alert over reports of visa fraud in Pakistan

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Pakistan has issued a public warning regarding a scam targeting Pakistani citizens about criminal organisations spreading misleading information about visa and consular appointments by creating fake embassy listings and phone numbers on Google Maps.

In a statement shared on X on Friday, the delegation confirmed that several fake entries for EU member state embassies had been observed in Islamabad. These listings, which include incorrect details about visa and consular services, also feature fraudulent phone numbers aimed at deceiving users.

The delegation clarified that only the official websites of EU member state embassies provide authentic details for visa and consular matters. It specifically cautioned against using entries on Google Maps or other embassy directories, which may contain inaccurate or deceptive information.

Furthermore, the EU noted that its own delegation in Pakistan does not handle the issuance of passports or visas. These are issued by the embassies and consulates of individual EU member states.

The EU urged Pakistani citizens to contact the relevant embassy or consulate directly to obtain the correct visa for their travel destinations in Europe.
