I was watching yesterday's match with bunch of Britishers in Dubai. The moment Pakistan was taking the epic game away from the Poms.

One of them said "At times Pakistan is like Liverpool of Cricket". Liverpool is a football club which has not been consistent in last 30 years. They have not won Premier League composed of 38 games for 29 years. But in knock out tournaments like Champions league Liverpool are a different beast altogether. They do things out of the box like Istanbul 2005 or Semi final 4-0 win over Barcelona after 0-3 down.

I tend to think on cricket lines, Pakistan has not been ranked number one in ODI's and Test Cricket (barring 2 months in 2016) for very very long time. However the moment crunch ICC matches turn up, they do the unthinkable.
In the last 20 years Pakistan has played in 3 Major ICC finals in England. Won 2 of them. Could have won in 1999 as well.

Sports psychology is a very complicated. Juventus, Man City and PSG are always consistent in their domestic leagues but somehow fail in Champions league big matches. (Juventus generally in finals though). Pakistan perhaps will never be consistent in Rankings but in ICC Events they will always be a force to reckon. This thing has been in Pakistan cricket since Australasia cup final 1986.

its sort of why i started supporting liverpool in the first place. I saw a bit of Pakistan cricket in liverpool fc.

lol no
Pakistan are Arsenal equivalent of cricket
the only reason i became an Arsenal supporter was that they reminded me of PCT and yes i regret making the decision of supporting Arsenal

I support Juventus and they have lost 7 finals. 73,83,97,98,03,15,17

Some teams are built and meant for crunch big knockout tournaments (it carries more value).
Some teams prefer league type/Ranking type consistency but are not good in major crunch moments. South Africa is prime example. They were ranked number 1 for such a long time in many formats.

Arsenal has never won Champions league or Europa League. So i am sorry to say you are wrong. Pakistan has won many ICC Events.

Arsenal have won PL though
And just the sort of unpredictable style Arsenal have just like Pakistan
at time boils your blood.. just everything about Arsenal resembles Pakistan

Pakistan cannot be like Arsenal, Arsenal are chokers of knock out formats unlike Pakistan , South Africa resemble Arsenal but genuine question which club resembles Indian team :sachin

I would like to think so being a fanatic supporter of both.

We are judge of good or bad threads - please either dont post in threads you dont like or let us know via MRR.

Liverpool has won 6 European Trophies which is the third highest in history and that is saying something considering number of clubs competing and winning this trophy. Also the second most successful English team ever, now Pakistan don't have 5 world cups , they are more an unpredictable side who has a great tournament when nobody expects them to. I would probably say they are more closer to current Chelsea team who has a great title run like when they won in 2017 but then follows it up next season by going though some lows, also won the 2012 UCL out of nowhere. A very unpredictable team this Chelsea side like Pakistan.

I wrote it more than 3 weeks ago and i was correct. We never do things the easy way. But always have great fighting knockout spirit.?

Lol Liverpool have won the European Cup 6 times and the league 18 times. They are the most successful team in England and up there in the world .

Pakistan are nothing like Liverpool imo just due to their trophy cabinet. Also this stuff about never making things easy is something which all fans say about there team. Liverpool beat Bayern Munich, Porto, and Spurs in the final comfortably. They were unlucky to be 3-0 down in the first place.

Another thing to add is Liverpool are now a very consistent team with a solid defence, energetic midfield, and devastating frontline. I don’t think we are as consistent as them.

Don’t see or agree with this comparison.

Appalling comparison and an insult to Liverpool FC.

FYI I'm an Arsenal fan.

I dunno about Pakistan but Pakistani fans are definitely behave like Liverpool fans used to when they sucked as a team always living in history before fergie knocked them out.

Today Man Utd are the ones living on past glories not Liverpool who are Euro Champs a competition that Man Utd are not even in next season. At least the Pak are reigning Champs of the ICC Champions Trophy unlike Man Utd who are holders of nothing. Poor Ole it seems no one wants to join his club, every top player is knocking Man Utd back!:klopp

well to be fair the atmosphere for pakistan games in the UK can resemble that of Anfield.
well those games not blatantly sold out to indians.

Ive been to both many times.

Nothing comes close to Anfield but I get your point, the atmosphere on Sunday and Wednseday was two of the best you will ever see in a world cup.

I've had these thoughts for years. In terms of excitment, passion and flair its a good comparison. But the Pakistan team today is more like the LFC team under Rafa. Today LFC are one of the top clubs in the world, consistent and have 2 of the best players in the world and another few who are up there too. Pakistan doesn't have the same quality as LFC today.

I mentioned Liverpool fans when they used to suck and fergie was around. Not today's Liverpool or United. I think it's still early days 4-5 more years and if united don't win any titles and keep sucking then United fans will also start living in past glories.

The thread is about today not 10 years back! Man Utd are already living in the past for some years now. You are talking about fans it seems where as I am about trophies.

I am talking about fans, Liverpool fans used to live in past and brag about history. United fans are still in disappointment and frustration stage, once they overcome that stage in next few years they will start living in history as well and brag about past achievements.

Unless of course they start winning titles again.

I would agree that Liverpool fans or club were similar to Pak under previous regimes. Since Klopp became manager we are no longer predictably unpredictable. We don't win two matches followed by three defeats anymore as was the case when Benitez was manager. To me United even Arsenal are also rans now, Pak Cricket side are not that seeing we have a decent chance of making it to the semi's.

Liverpool is elite club now one of best teams in world at the moment so not comparing them right now ..

But I think previous teams did good for a season or two (didn't win but did well) when they had one superstar like Torres or Suarez.

Similar to Pakistan where they have a superstar now in Babar or sometimes amir and they do well in tournaments..

Pak are ICC Champions Trophy reigning champs. Liverpool are reigning European champions. Only thing to be more similar is for Pak fans to start singing "you'll never walk alone" at our matches:klopp

What about for other countries ? Let me start.
Australia - real madrid, the best in history without question.

South africa - arsenal of mid 2000

Bnagladesh- dortmund under klopp, passionate fans attractive style but ultimately a bit short in quality.

I am struggling to find comparisons for other countries.

I’ve often thought Pakistan in cricket are like Holland in international football - they always have the most exciting, talented and entertaining players out of the European teams especially but they are again unpredictable and lack discipline as a team.. chaos combined with brilliance to put it in one line, that’s Dutch football and Pakistan cricket for you. Always a controversy around the corner in any tournament and known for in fighting and player rivalries within the team also. In both cases they rarely achieve what they are capable of on paper , and don’t seem to learn from their mistakes.

Dortmund under Klopp won silverware, Bangladesh have won nothing yet.
