Umar Amin Stars as Pakistan Champions Secure 31-Run Win Over South Africa in WCL 2025

Umar Amin’s classy knock, backed by a disciplined all-round bowling display, led Pakistan Champions to a convincing 31-run victory over South Africa Champions in the ninth match of the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 at Grace Road on Friday.

Chasing a challenging target of 198, the South Africa Champions faltered and managed only 167-9 in their 20 overs.

The Proteas were off to a shaky start, losing their top three — Hashim Amla (12), JJ Smuts (10), and Henry Davids (6) — inside the first seven overs, slipping to 42-3. The middle order failed to provide resistance, and by the 18th over, they were struggling at 128-8.

Morne van Wyk offered a late fightback with a rapid 44 off just 20 deliveries, smashing five boundaries and two sixes to narrow the margin of defeat.

For Pakistan Champions, Sohail Tanvir and Mohammad Hafeez picked up two wickets each in an effective bowling performance.

Earlier, Pakistan Champions posted a formidable 198-5 after being sent in to bat. Umar Amin led the way with a fluent 58 from 42 balls, while Shoaib Malik remained unbeaten with a brisk 46 off 34 deliveries.

The innings started with a quick 27-run opening stand before Sharjeel Khan fell for 19 off 11 balls, hitting three fours and a six. Kamran Akmal chipped in with a handy 17 from 11 deliveries, including four boundaries, before being dismissed in the sixth over, reducing Pakistan to 54-2.

South Africa Champions struck again in the eighth over, removing the in-form Mohammad Hafeez for just 8.

However, a solid 79-run partnership between Umar Amin and Shoaib Malik laid the foundation for a big total. Amin’s knock featured four fours and three sixes before he was dismissed in the 16th over with the score at 155.

Asif Ali provided the final flourish with a blistering 23 off 11 balls, which included two sixes and two fours, taking the total close to 200.

Among the South African bowlers, Dwaine Olivier picked up two wickets, while Hardus Viljoen, Wayne Parnell, and JP Duminy claimed one each.

I'm not a fan of Pakistan cheating in these tournaments with these active players lol

Even cook made a slight jibe at the Pakistan legends during stick to cricket podcast.

Many of these players like Umar Amin and Imad Wasim are playing cricket still. They have a chance to make money. It's better to let actual retired players get a chance to shine again.

Glad to see Prince of Pretoria Umar Amin still kicking it! Who remembers his epic classy counterpunching quickfire 20 odd runs in the 2013 ODI series vs SA to thwart Steyn and co?

I remember that series. Pakistan won 2-1 if I believe.

The chase would have been easy if Devilliers was there.. SOhail versus Devilliers would have been epic...LOL

I see. Pakistan won another one then. I forgot which year.

Umar Amin was called a "classy left hander" on PP in 2010. I remember there was a thread about him.
Yes, we did win later that same year or early 2014, not sure which. We played SAF many times around that time, full tour in SA, then full tour in UAE then LOI tour in SA again where we won the ODI series.

Hafeez defeated his arch nemesis at last in the t20 series in SA iirc :steyn
