Pakistan will host the 2023 West Asia Cup Baseball tournament, which will commence Jan 27th 2023

It will be a 7 team tournament which will have teams from Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanstan, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Pakistan and India

The last edition was in 2019, which Sri Lanka won by beating Pakistan in the final by a score of 5-4

Indian border officials stop baseball team from entering Pakistan


LAHORE: In the wee hours of Wednesday, the Indian baseball team had arrived at the Wagah border, ready to enter Pakistan to play the West Asia Cup. With them was the Nepal team. But while the Nepalese entered Pakistan for the tournament, which opens on Jan 27 in Islamabad, the Indian security officials stopped their compatriots, asking them to show a NOC issued by the government.

The Indians had only received their visas late on Tuesday and Pakistan Federation Baseball president Fakhar Ali Shah info*rmed Dawn that they were still waiting at the Wagah border.

“Even if they get the NOC on Jan 27, we will adjust the schedule of their matches accordingly,” Fakhar said, infor*ming that Sri Lanka’s arrival had also been delayed and they would fly in on Thursday while Nepal joined Palestine and Bangladesh in reaching Islamabad.

Earlier, Indian Baseball Federation general secretary Harish Kumar, who is accompanying the 20-member squad, had sent a video message to the PFB, saying it was “thankful to the government of Pakistan, especially for their all efforts for the issuance of the visas to the Indian squad”.

It is slightly growing in Pakistan,

Regarding MLB or Baseball in general, did not hear anything about it declining in USA, or the other big playing nations ( Japan, Cuba, Puerto Rico etc....)
 
The Pakistan Federation Baseball will wait until Friday evening for the Indian team to arrive in Islamabad for the West Asia Cup before taking a definitive decision on the tournament’s format.

India’s squad, which received its visas on Tuesday night, was stopped at the Wagah border on Wednesday by officials of their own country and are awaiting a No-Objection Certificate from their government to enter Pakistan.

PFB president Fakhar Ali Shah told a news conference at the Pakistan Sport Complex that if India were unable to reach till Friday, when the West Asia Cup begins with the opening match between Pakistan and Afghanistan, then the tournament will become a six-team event.

Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Palestine have already arrived in Islamabad and captains of all the teams were present at the news conference.

“If India are able to reach till Friday evening, we can adjust them,” Fakhar told reporters, displaying a video message by Indian Baseball Federation general secretary Harish Kumar, who is accompanying the 20-member squad.

Kumar said that the IBF was making efforts to get clearance from their government by Friday morning in order to reach Islamabad by the evening.

India’s national Baseball team has reached Pakistan to partake in the 15th West Asia Baseball Cup after a brief delay in the issuance of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Pakistan government.

According to the details, the Indian team reached Pakistan via the Wagah border on Friday afternoon and will start their campaign in due course.

Earlier, the Indian contingent faced a brief delay in the issuance of the NOC from the Pakistan government, which, however, was resolved on Tuesday (January 24).

After being granted the NOC, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India then wrote a formal request to the Pakistan Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination to seek visas for the players, poised to participate in the event.

The six-team tournament, involving hosts Pakistan, Palestine, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, kicked off in Islamabad today and will conclude on February 1.

In the opening match of the multi-national event, defending champion Sri Lanka outclassed Nepal by a score of 26-0.

Pakistan will clash with Sri Lanka in the semi-finals of the West Asia Baseball Cup as the Pakistan Federation Baseball shared the fixtures of the last four.

The hosts will take on the current West Asia Cup champions, Sri Lanka, at 10 am on Monday.

Meanwhile, Palestine will take on Bangladesh in the second semi-final of the event. It will kick off at 1:00 pm.

Winner Pakistan and runner up Palestine have qualified for the Asian Baseball Championship which will be held later on this year in Taiwan.

The winner and runner up of West Asia Baseball Cup get qualification.

Pakistan has now won West Asia Baseball Cup on 4 occasions ( 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2023)
 
After the conclusion of West Asia Cup

Pakistan played India in a friendly match in Islamabad.
