'We need to apply ourselves better' – Hamilton Masakadza
Sarfraz Ahmed ecstatic with his team's performance but insists a lot of cricket still to go in the series.
Pakistan are ranked No.1 on the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Team rankings, 11 spots above Zimbabwe. The gulf between the two sides clearly showed as the visitors romped to a resounding 74-run win in the opening game of the triangular series in Harare on Sunday 1 July.
Put into bat, Pakistan rode on Fakhar Zaman's second T20I half-century followed by useful cameos from Asif Ali (41* in 21) and Shoaib Malik (37* in 24) to post a formidable 182/4 in their 20 overs.
Mohammad Nawaz, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Hafeez and Usman Shinwari then picked up two wickets each as Zimbabwe were restricted to 108. Kyle Jarvis, who had hurt his finger during the 14th over in the first innings while going for a catch, was unable to bat.
Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, was all smiles after his team's convincing win in the opening game.
"First match of the series is really important," said Ahmed after the game. "Fakhar Zaman played really well at the top and Shoaib Malik and Asif Ali finished the innings well.
"It looked like a good batting pitch. The ball did not come on in the first innings, but played well in the second. There was some movement initially.
"Credit goes to the bowlers, especially Usman and Nawaz. Plenty of cricket to be played in this series. Hopefully we will do well."
For Zimbabwe, who were playing without five of their regulars, it was always going to be a tough ask chasing 183 on this surface. They had their moments throughout the game, but were unable to build on them.
Losing Jarvis, who looked exceptional in his opening burst where he gave away just nine runs in two overs picking up the wicket of Mohammad Hafeez, also did not help their cause.
"Only bright point was winning the toss," said Hamilton Masakadza, the Zimbabwe captain. "We gave them 20 runs extra. It was not ideal that Jarvis went out injured as well.
"We started okay but we lost our way in the middle period. Our batting order was fine, but the execution was a problem.
"Just the first game of the series. We don't need to make changes in the team yet, but we need to apply ourselves better at the top of the order."
