Was watching Hum News, they reported that Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi is supposed to meet US based billionaire Shahid Khan in New York to invest in PSL and "break the back" of IPL.

Idea is to invest into PSL and get top players for top dollars.
Would this deal materialize ? Why has Shahid Khan not invested in PSL till now?

If he can invest in a crap team like Fulham then I don’t see why he can’t do the same for PSL

Isn't he already investing much in pro wrestling rn ? like AEW..
I doubt he even would invest anything PSL.

If he wanted to he already would have. Plus they are currently going against wwe with their wrestling adventures of aew and are focused on that, its tough he will want to throw his money this way... but it would be nice if he did...

How does a Pakistani foreign minister meeting an overseas Pakistani billionaire break the back of a T20 franchise league in India? :)))

I doubt Shahid will invest a dime in PSL if he doesn't see value in it.

Anyway, I don't like the title to be honest. What does his potential investment have anything to do with IPL? Seems very childish and provocative.

Obviously he is a multi billionaire but, why not involve the biggest industrialists of Pakistan first as they are yet to go into PSL as investors rather few of them have just been sponsors for few teams.

Also what is the expected way of investment? As title sponsor? When PSL of created it was naturally a risky venture so first 5 franchises were sold at a lesser price then even 6th one which was established just the next year and initially the overall expenditure budget and restriction to increase number of teams was placed for the contract period as per my understanding.

So Shahid Khan or any other Pakistani industrialists can bring much more bigger investment if PSL after negotiation with franchises is expanded. At the moment other than being the title sponsor or sponsor of individual teams there isnt much they can do.

I have put the exact words as said by the anchor.. Muhammed Malik from Hum News.
Could not record the clip else would have shared.

$$$$.. loads of money to pay the players. That seems to be the plan.
May be this is one of the 2 major investor Rameez Raja was talking about when spoke about Australian DNA.

Would like to have a source for this news and the "break the back" news reporting. Lol! really surprising choice of words.

Also not sure how some Indian posters are surprised by just these words when their own media has broke all limits of cringe and poor journalism. :afridi

would be a terrible move, shahid khan is a smart guy, putting his billions into the psl would simply end up lining pockets of numerous leaches who will get stuck to the project. on top of that the costs would spiral out of control with little guaranteed increase in revenue, which could destroy the league as it is.

the only option that would work for him would to take majority control of the PSL, but then pak will control of its own players and u can say bye to players committing to pcb contracts.

if he really wants to invest he should just get his own franchise team and professionalise it. trying to antogonise the IPL would hurt the PSL, they could easily put very broad non-compete clauses into their contracts and basically enfore them stop anyone hoping to get an IPL gig from playing in the PSL.

quereshi is prone to hyperbole, i seriously doubt anything of this would materialise.

" Break the back of IPL" , who's wording is this , ridiculous , non-sense .

Nothing wrong with trying to convince Shahid Khan to invest in PSL, but please don;t claim to break any back with this.

Pakistan cricket just needs to focus on getting the best out of the national team, signing bigger names and trying to make more money from the PSL.

Forget about the ipl!!

Lol Hum taking a leaf out of Republic TV .. also where are you able to watch HUM NEWS? I thought they only had Dramas

My my my :)))

So after begging almost every rich country and institution in the world over the last three years, this circus government is now going to beg Shahid Khan for money.

I bet he is going to tell them to get lost. If he was interested in PSL, he would have done it already.

I have real tv subscription. From India and Pakistan to Bangladesh, and from USA to Russia, i get most of the news channels.

I follow mostly sub-continental news channels as European/American new channels are boring to watch.

Shahid Khan is a smart investor. He did not become a billionaire for nothing. He is not going to invest heavily in Pakistan considering the lack of stability and credibility of the country.

Fake, scripted speeches on patriotism by the fake pir who is masquerading as our Foreign Minister is not going make any difference.

Shahid Khan is a Pakistani only by origin. He clearly doesn’t really care for the country.

If he did, he would have made some huge investments by now and could have made a considerable difference considering the wealth that he has.

He is not going to do any “khairat” for PSL but this government specializes in making a laughing stock of itself and of Pakistan by extension.

This guy when approached by a group of Pakistani Americans for contributing big to the Pakistan Dam Fund only forked out $1,000. That is as badniyat as it gets. He clearly does not care or have any sentiments towards Pakistan

Why invest in a corrupt country? The risk isnt worth the return on investment... why invest in people unwilling to change their ways?

Like there is zero stability and credibility. Personally i wouldnt be investing either. Its a waste of time and resources.

How is he badniyat? He has been living in America for almost 50 years. America made him what he is today.

At least he is not a fake like most overseas Pakistanis who pretend that they love Pakistan but in reality, they worship their western passports.

If I was in his position, I too wouldn’t pay a penny to Pakistan and would rather help out a country that actually deserves help.

Does he known he owns two mediocre sports teams. Who comes up with these dieas?

He's not under any obligation to care for Pakistan to be honest. Pakistan needs to get it's own house in order, there's plenty of potential paying customers for a quality cricket product. But it will only attract paying customers if the players are good enough, and at the moment, domestic players are not that exciting bar the odd one or two.

Bill Gates helps out various projects in Pakistan. He is under no obligation to do anything for Pakistan either but he does it

Bill Gates is a philanthropist. Shahid Khan isn’t.

He is a businessman and despite the hype, these leagues are more of a PR exercise. As far as I know non of the teams are making a profit

Yes when the network started they only had entertainment channel however now they have expanded it to news, food channel, style channel, and entertainment cum lifestyle channel as well as a regional language channel or two.

Not sure if he will want to invest in Pakistan. He probably forgets that he was born in Pakistan and is get reminded every now and then by Pakistani’s asking for some investment.

From what I am reading in this thread, “break the back” wasn’t said by anyone connected to Pakistan cricket or government in a position of responsibility.

Just media trying to up their TRPs it seems. Which is no big deal, Indian media = same, same.

On topic, how can one guy however rich fix (assuming it needs fixing) all of PSL to the point it rivals IPL?

So why hasn't anyone else in the country invested substantial amount in PSL. Is it because there is no one who can invest millions of dollars or is the PSL not worth investing on right now?

Which one is it?

Uske paisey uski marzi

you can ask him for a help but there's no need to criticize him for that

I'd say both.

PSL is quite young in terms of editions played entirely in Pakistan. Because of this, the revenue generated is uninspiring.

There are surely people ready to invest, but at the same time, people might not want to invest in something like the PSL which is again, not the best going around.

LoL investing in PSL will have little effect on IPL. The Strength of IPL comes from Indian Market which is cricket loving and is a staggering Billion plus in size.
Sounds like Masala news that too in poor taste.

"To meet" i doubt if even he would meet Qureshi. All these Pakistani leaders spread their hands wide whenever they see someone with money.

I remember Imran Khan meeting him in 2019 too.

http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/s...Billionaire-Shahid-Khan-met-Imran-Khan-in-USA

Shahid didn't even invest a dime back then, do not think he would invest a dime this time around too.

I assume Shahid become a billionaire by making sure his investments generated the required return.

Yeah seems to be the trajectory for every network.

Yea it's the latter. It's still early and quiet frankly it needs a boost in terms of money and star power in the coming few years or so.

Also HBL's contract is over as the title sponsors. It will be interesting to see if they can renew it for coming years or maybe there will be someone else with more money.

Again PCB and Pakistan ministry taking the wrong route...
It all comes down to our team performance which has become unwatchable when Misbah arrived (except for 2017-2018)
Make your team win big games, play better cricket, and then they become marketable everywhere
Now even die hard cricket fans dont want to watch these jokersforget about them becoming brand ambassadors of products

I think there will be a bigger company looking for the title sponsorship.

My hunch is a Chinese company, but let's see.

Qureshi plans to break IPL's back with Shahid Khan's money (worth $8 billion) when IPL has owners like Mukesh Ambani (worth $96 billion)?

Can you tell me how is broadcast revenue which is the major chunk of the revenue for any event dependent on the venue?

Shahid Khan owns two sports teams and a pro wrestling company. But never have I heard him associate himself with Pakistan or cricket in any way. If he wanted to, he would have. So even if the rumor of SMQ meeting is true, it doesn't mean anything will come out of it. He's a billionaire who hasn't become one without making sound investments. And he's an American, not a Pakistani. So I don't know why alot of people keep expecting him to have some sort of a soft spot for Pakistan.

Would it be a bit too much to ask for overseas Pakistanis to up the ante a little & try to influence the narrative in their home country, the UK , so that the board of the country, dont outright dismiss the board of their foster country. ( or vice versa ) .Could start off by holding placards or something.

He was born in Pakistan, didnt get to the US until 16. Pakistani American is prob the correct term.

He doesnt understand football but invested in Fulhum, its a great club which can grow in the future.

He may not may not invest in PSL but money talks. If PSL one day pays more than the IPL, the cricketers will flock to it. They dont go the IPL because they love bombay mix or bollywood, its only for the $.

Imo PSL should be played worldwide to improve it's brand.

Have 1/3 of the tournament in the UK , 2nd in US and remaining in Pakistan.

There is a huge market with foriegn based Pakistanis. Thousands attended Birmingham Phoenix for the 100 . If Lahore or Karachi were to play each other at Edgbaston, you would sell it multiple times over.

If shahid khan was in pakistan he would have been doing a government job making 90k per month.

Yes I know. He's still an American in my opinion. Because he never looked back after going to America, nor associated himself with Pakistan. He is different from many other overseas Pakistanis who still maintain some sort of a connection with their country of birth.

One day alot of things could happen. But in the present and near future nothing as such is happening.

Not necessarily broadcasting revenue, but the quality of cricket.

People are only interested in things that are tangible and seen in front of them.

PSL in the UAE was hardly known by the average Pakistani. Creating the domestic hype is an important factor.

Sir revenue from tv has very little to do with where the game is played. Even when India plays in other countries the Indian broadcaster pays huge money to buy the rights.

I thought pakistan, as a kingmaker, was going to bring China in cricket to counter India?

If people aren't interested in a league, why would broadcasters pay extravagant sums of money?

Do you think PSL editions before the 5th one was actually worthwhile to watch? They were mediocre and boring.

India still has a very large fanbase for cricket. Pakistanis, when PSL was held in the UAE, did not care at all about the league.

Before broadcasters can hand you a large deal, you need to make sure the league is actually watchable.

Yet another one with no business sense and acumen.

It is not about whether a team is crap or great; it is about how safe and stable an investment is.

Pakistan is volatile, unstable and has zero credibility. A PSL tournament can get sabotaged at any moment due to a bomb blast.

Shahid Khan is not bonkers. He is not going to do “charity” for PSL just because the success of IPL is giving the government of Pakistan sleepless nights.

If he was interested in PSL, he would have invested already.

Instead of that why can't they ask him to invest in Pak and open up a couple Flex-n-Gate plants over there, that would create thousands of jobs. They already manufacture in Mexico and several other countries.

lol @ all the posters bashing FM. This is some masala news by a 3rd grade channel that has no leg to stand on. Guys, relax!

"kamar tor dena" is an urdu idiom, you can't translate it literally.

I remember talking to one of the PSL management comitte guys couple years back and he said Shahid Khan was very interested in getting his quotes and being featured in the prospectus for the PSL but wasn't willing to invest in PSL. He'd take all the publicity he can get but won't actually invest in any money. Lol I remember once he even to Gaddafi stadium to give interview to CNBC or something
