Pakistan must detach itself from American influence and pull out of the “war on terror” in order to create prosperity and achieve regional peace, Imran Khan, the Pakistani opposition leader , has said.

Buoyed by last week’s dismissal of prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Khan is eyeing Pakistan’s highest political office, and said he was ready to change the country’s international relations.

“Sadly, our ruling elite took dollars from the Americans and went into this war,” Khan told the Guardian. “It has created such hatred in our society. It has created turmoil.”

His comments come as the US considers how to approach the conflict in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The White House recently announced it was withholding $50m (£38m) in military aid to Pakistan for its failure to crack down on jihadi groups.

How can you not vote for him?

Go back to 2004 and he is saying same from 13 freaking years never changed his view about US war on terror even repeated frequently before 2013 elections to make US think tanks unhappy. This is one of the reason he resigned from his seat in 2004. Now he is saying it again just before next elections? Come on Khan use some sense don't make too many enemies and avoid these comments.

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism say there's been only four drone strikes this year in Pakistan. But if Imran wants to deny US the airspace, and frankly given Trump's open disregard for civilian casualties as we're seeing in Iraq and Syria where he's breaking records for civilian deaths, then fine.

If he wants to stop Pakistan's dependency on US aid, that's also understandable given as a lot of aid money is wasted and goes into the pockets of corrupt officials.

However if he suggests talking to the TTP, who've butchered innocent kids in classrooms, massacred Christians in Lahore during Easter, repeatedly attacked the Shias of Parachinar and overall have the blood of tens of thousands of Pakistanis - then he's wrong to say that is not Pakistan's war and to hell with that.

Deaths from terror are now at 2004 levels. TTP have lost significant amounts of territory. Pakistan's counterinsurgency efforts have been praised around the world. Why talk to a losing army ?

These terrorists deserve to be bombed into oblivion not given the legitimacy of political negotiation and dialogue.

Khan strikes again with anti-American comments, USA would make sure that this person stays away from power in Pakistan if they intend to hold influence.

They're probably too occupied with trying to figure out what's going on in the White House to poke their nose into Pakistani politics. :trump2

The last bit about talking to the TTP is all propaganda. What he does want is our own army to stop butchering their own as 'collateral damage'. He wants strong civil institutions (i.e. Police with a special counter terrorism branch) that can handle internal terrorism.

Yes, America is not the same anymore, has lost influence all over the world. Having worst presidents, one after another since Bush taking its toll.

Pakistan has chosen the two worst 'allies' in its time: Saudi Arabia and the USA. Crafting ties with an open sewer line would have been more beneficial than the muck Saudi Arabia has propagated in Pakistan over the years, and the deal with the USA must have been pretty damn good if they pelted down Pakistan with drones hundreds of thousands of times and received virtually no reaction.

We in India did better: the Soviet Union didn't meddle with our internal affairs, and our other partners since such as Israel and France indicate a purely transactional relationship.

POTW for me. Exactly my feelings and I couldn't have said it better myself.

And........
pakistan should open an offshore in Panama to avoid debt payments.

Imran Khan being an idiot as always. He should stick to his Dharna's.

I would say this is the smartest thing any Pakistani leader has said in recent times regarding domestic and foreign policy.

If you take aid from the Yanks, it's doesn't come for free and there is always something attached, mostly something which does not benefit the nation but harms it.

Joining in an unjust war was the most stupid thing the Pakistani's ever did. It has caused so much death and destruction in Pakistan when it had nothing to do with it.

Easier said thane done. I fear he could be a target for assassination if he keeps up this American bashing. By and large I agree with him that Pak must become self dependent. The American's have only ever used us to get what they want. We should also blackmail them to do right by us in Afghanistan if we have the leaders who knew how to play the many cards we have correctly.

Rejecting US has a lot more layers than just refusing their aid and 'stopping the war on terror.'

At the moment, US has to be diplomatic to enough to appease both Pakistan and India. It sells arms to both Pakistan and India; isnt taking any overt measures to neutralize Pakistan's neutral arsenal and gives it a decent amount of respect.

If Pakistan outright rejects US's war on terror, it will result in Pakistan being thrown into the same basket as Iran, or worse, North Korea; and it will be incredibily easy for the US to declare Pakistan a 'terrorist state' and place crippling sanctions on it's trade. Or heck without US support, India will be a lot more active in strong-arming Pakistan with the complete backing of US.

Pakistan needs America a lot more than the other way around; if for no reason but to not be America's next victim in the middle-east crisis.

I'm sure Imran Khan is smart enough to know this as well, but is just saying this to appease the anti-American sentiment in Pakistan and win votes.

I expect usa to know little bit about pakistan....
Decisions are made in pindi by umpire and IK is a good sportsman, won't protest on unfair decisions.

he also said that pervez khattak will not move to cm house and pti will not waste money on metro in peshawar...

the bottom line is that saying things to attract votes and taking actions while in power are two different things. you have to be very stupid to believe that imran will take such bold steps if he comes into power. the dynamics of pak politics is such that most of the politicians have their hands tied while the army runs the show.
