Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday assured citizens that Pakistan was "on its way to becoming a great nation", saying that every area in the country had a special quality that could be developed to its advantage.

The premier made these remarks while answering the public's questions via telephone, in the first such session since he assumed office in 2018.

The first caller, a person from Sahiwal, asked Prime Minister Imran about the government's strategy to vaccinate the population against Covid-19. Outlining the government's plan, the premier said that in the first phase, frontline health workers, especially those treating coronavirus patients would be vaccinated.

After that, citizens who were over 60 years of age or those with pre-existing conditions that made them more vulnerable to Covid-19 would be vaccinated, followed by the general public.

"Rich and poor will not matter. We will try to cover as many people as possible," he stressed.

In response to a question by another citizen, the premier said that every area of Pakistan has a "certain advantage" that can be developed for its benefit. Elaborating on his statement, he said that Gilgit Baltistan could never be an industrial hub similar to Karachi and Sialkot but it could become a hub for tourism.

Citing the example of Switzerland, he said the country was "half the size of our Northern areas yet every year it earns $80 billion from tourism", comparing it to Pakistan's exports, which he said amounted to $25bn annually.

"GB is twice [the size] of Switzerland and has taller mountains. If we concentrate on tourism then the whole area can become prosperous like never before. I have talked to the [GB] chief minister, we have to make it a tourism hub."

Talking further about the region, the premier said the government was setting up a grid station in GB and would also set up hydroelectricity plants. "We have also planned roads which will open the area for tourism."

He said this would lead to "so much prosperity in the region that people [currently] leaving GB for jobs elsewhere would not have to do so".

Moving on to Balochistan, he said the province was sparsely populated and the distances between residential populations were "too vast so development is not easy".

"Balochistan's political setup has also damaged its people and caused harm." The premier said that a local government system was needed so the money would "[trickle down] to the villages instead of remaining with the people at the top".

Prime Minister Imran noted that south Balochistan had been "left even more behind" but the PTI government had announced the "biggest package in Balochistan's history" for its development.

"We have given internet connectivity [and] it has become a source of development. Many areas did not have 3G and 4G [services] but the reason for that was terrorism.

"We have decided to [make 3G and 4G services operational] for our youth in far-flung areas and tribal areas so people have connectivity".

He urged the people to "have some patience", saying the government wanted to develop far-flung areas that had been left behind but had limited resources.

"As resources keep increasing, as our mineral wealth in Balochistan starts increasing, we will try that it is first invested in Balochistan instead of going anywhere else."

Blasphemy
Replying to a question regarding Islamophobia and publication of blasphemous cartoons of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Prime Minister Imran said the West could not understand the Muslims' "depth of feelings" for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) because they "view religion differently".

"Nothing hurts us more than [the prophet's] disrespect but the West does not understand this." He described his own efforts to combat Islamophobia, saying he had raised the issue in the United Nations and the UN General Assembly and then jointly raised it for a third time along with Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"Until heads of Muslim countries come together and agree [to tackle it], the issue will not be solved. This is a struggle we have to continuously do and I fully believe we will be successful."

Naya Pakistan Housing Project
In response to another caller, the premier explained why the government had decided to launch the Naya Pakistan Housing Project (NPHP).

Comparing the conditions in the United States and Europe, he said that "80 per cent of people in those countries took loans to buy houses, 30pc of people in Malaysia while only 0.2pc of people in Pakistan" did the same.

Talking about the changes the government had brought into the system, he said: "It took us two years in the courts to clear the stuck [foreclosure] law. Now that this obstacle has vanished, the banks can give loans.

"Banks do not have the practice of giving loans because they were not used to giving loans to ordinary people. I met with bank managers and we agreed that banks should be trained to give loans to ordinary people who do not have cash or security."

He said that after the government's subsidies, people would take loans to build houses and the money they had previously paid for rent would now go towards paying their instalments.

"The project has started and slowly people and banks are understanding it. Now banks are themselves advertising that people should come and take loans from them," he said, adding that this would give an opportunity to salaried people and labourers to build their own houses.

Just making a comparison with Switzerland will not do. How casually he makes such comparisons defies logic. Switzerland had built up a proper infrastructure before telling the whole world to visit their country for tourism. They had built tunnels on the mountains and created routes for a train ride. That's how they are raking in revenues from the tourism sector. Not just being beautiful alone will cut it. Again, our Pakistani population is gullible at best so everything can sell there just need to sugarcoat it.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday spoke to the masses via telephone and told them to be patient while addressing problems faced by Pakistan.

The calls were broadcast live on television and were moderated by Senator Faisal Javed Khan, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting.

Pakistani citizens called the prime minister and asked questions related to different issues, including the coronavirus vaccine, issues of Balochistan and Gilgit Baltistan, inflation, the Opposition, and the concept of Riyasat-e-Madina, among others.

Coronavirus vaccine
Responding to a question regarding the coronavirus vaccine and the first consignment of the vaccine which has arrived from China today, the premier clarified that frontline healthcare workers will be the first to receive the jabs.

"According to a criterion that the government has set for the vaccination drive, [after frontline workers] we will inoculate people above the age of 60 who might have underlying health conditions," the PM said.

He also assured the masses that the government will not consider a person's socioeconomic status or the difference between the rich and poor when vaccinating them but will only stick to the set criteria for vaccination.

Issues of Gilgit Baltistan, Balochistan
Another citizen called to ask about the development of Gilgit Baltistan, responding to which the premier said that while the region cannot be turned into an industrial hub, it can surely be transformed into a world-class tourist destination, adding that he has spoken to the chief minister of GB regarding tourism therein. The PM also promised to work on power issues that the region is facing.

"We know that Gilgit Baltistan is facing electricity problems and we will soon build grid stations there," the PM said.

Speaking about Balochistan, the PM said that the province is very large with a comparatively small population which makes it difficult to work on its development.

"The political set up of Balochistan which has been historically followed damaged the province," the PM said. "It is crucial to introduce a local bodies system there if we want to address their problems."

PM Khan also added that Balochistan's southern areas lag behind other parts of the province for which the PTI government has introduced development packages.

"We will work on the development of Balochistan but people should be patient," the premier stressed.

Speaking about the developmental projects that the PTI government has initiated in the country, the PM said that no other country in the world provides housing facilities to the masses. Citing the example of the United Kingdom, he said that 80 per cent of the masses take loans from banks in order to construct houses.

As against that, the PM claimed, only 0.2 per cent of Pakistanis seek housing loans from banks.

"The government will provide a subsidy of Rs300,000 per yard for each house under the housing scheme," the PM said.

The promise of Riyasat-e-Madina
Another caller, Ismail Abbasi, asked the prime minister about the eulogisation of the concept of a welfare state — or Riyasat-e-Madina as the PM likes to call it — and asked how would the government ensure the materialisation of the concept.

The caller said that people have started questioning the PM's promise of turning Pakistan into a welfare state because of the injustices taking place in society, like the killing of Usama Satti by Islamabad police.

In response, the PM said that he believes in the concept of Riyasat-e-Madina because it was based on modern-day principles of welfare.

"Every nation that followed the golden principles of Riyasat-e-Madina has succeeded," the PM maintained, adding that whenever he advocated the concept of a welfare state people discouraged him but he did not back down.

"I have envisaged turning Pakistan into Riyasat-e-Madina and I will do so, there is no way to deflect from this goal," he said. "Pakistan will also turn into a great nation."

Corruption, rule of law, and economy
Answering another question, the prime minister said that the country will only progress towards prosperity when rule of law will be strengthened.

"Giving the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) to the powerful and throwing the poor in jails will only destroy the country," the PM said.

Speaking about the Opposition, PM Imran Khan said that "the biggest looters of the country came together and formed a union and these looters have been trying to pressurise the government for the past two years."

He added that former president General Pervez Musharraf gave the NRO to the biggest looters during his tenure.

"The corrupt rulers of the country stole people's money and laundered it abroad," he said, adding that by bringing up the foreign funding case against the ruling PTI, the Opposition has put itself in a troublesome situation.

"We have provided names of 40,000 donors to the Election Commission of Pakistan in relation to the foreign funding case but the Opposition parties cannot even name one hundred donors."

Citing the example of Malaysia, the PM said that the country also witnessed the rise of "PDM-like" alliances which pushed the country into debts.

"The country has been pushed into crises during the decade-long rule of the PML-N and PPP combined," the PM said, adding that people expected the PTI government to come into power and change everything overnight which is only possible in fairytales.

"It takes time to fix the problems of the country," he stressed.

Prime Minister also talked about inflation and said that he is fully aware of the masses' plight.

"The country has been plunged into poverty because of corrupt presidents and prime ministers in the past," he said. "[Owing to flawed policies of the previous governments] the Pakistani rupee severely depreciated which led to inflation in the country."

The PM added that when he formed a government, Pakistan was going through the darkest economic period in history.

"We are trying to improve the country's economy but people have to be patient," he said.

Senate elections
Responding to a question about the Senate elections, the PM said that "MNAs sell their votes in the Senate elections," and many people become senators by giving bribe. "

"Those who became senators by bribing others come to power to make money," he said. "The PPP and PML-N said in the Charter of Democracy that there should be an open ballot system in the elections," he said.

"We will be introducing an amendment in the Senate elections this week for an open ballot system of voting," the PM said. "The nation will see who supports the open ballot system and who opposes it."

Plight of state institutions
Taking a jibe at the previous government, the PM said corruption coupled with politically-influenced appointments in state institutions led to their destruction.

Answering a question about the plight of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the PM said that PIA is indebted with a loan of Rs400 billion because of which it also has to pay interest.

"We do not have the resources to purchase more aircraft for the national carrier," Imran Khan said, adding that the government is currently restricting the PIA as more people have been recruited by it than needed.

The PM also said that his government is trying it best to pay off the debts incurred by the PIA, adding that the pandemic severely affected the airline industry because of which PIA faced considerable losses.

Pakistan has far more potential than Switzerland for toursim but it will take time.

The country is heading in the right direction for a long time but a lot more work needs to be done.

When this pandemic is over, we will see a huge influx of tourists to Pakistan esp overseas Pakistanis and Europeans.

After years of criminals running PK, we have a sincere PM and IA he will succeed. The irony of the opposition avoiding tough interviews or even basic questions and the PM taking phone calls from the public and giving full one on one interviews to critical journalists without fear isn't lost on anyone.

Switzerland has built its wealth on laundered and stolen wealth. If a Muslim country did this, they would be bombed back to the stone age

Thieve and patwaris had done a great job in messing up the country over last 40-50 years, give this honest guy some time, be patient, things will get better.

Actually the UAE has and is still doing this. But they’ve sold out so bombing avoided.

Why isn’t it and what exactly is the flaw? Government sets the policy which provides banks the confidence that they can use the house as collateral against the loan.

Imran has mentioned a few times that they were finally able to get a foreclosure procedure approved through the courts which should create ease for the banking system. Let’s see if it works out.

This
Proper Tourism industry "needs" infrastructure too bad the ganja brothers were criticized for thier infrastructure building instead of focusing on health and education (like saying we need briyani but we don't want to invest in buying utensils and silverware)

It is so wonderful to see, after so many decades, a PM of Pakistan the world respects and one that we can be proud of. One who cares about the population and the future of his nation.

The future of Pakistan is bright inshallah, I pity those who still doubt this fact and who would rather spend time praying for its failure, such individuals need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Pakistan Zindabad ! :pakflag2 :pmik :pakflag2

More useless stunts and gimmicks. This type of dramaybaazi is exciting for the brainwashed supporters and cheerleaders but it doesn’t have any tangible outcome.

Also, one can only laugh the people who are calling him. :)))

Apparently, the public telephonic session was pre-recorded? And the callers were actually PTV staff? Lots of rumors and PTV documents floating around on social media.

are you watching patwari TV again?

they were criticised for the kickbacks and lack of long term planning..you have to do both, healthcare, education and infrastructure.

It is relevant to the topic. No doubt about it. We cannot progress till we reign in extremists.

To you Indians IK is an extremist. PK has been held back by number of major areas - high price of electricity thanks to BB,NS and Mush where our electricity costs a 1/3 more than others in the area, a poor dysfunctional education system in dire need of reform and an elite that uses every project, every initiative to steal money. IK has started the long hard road of tackling the electricity mafia, the education reforms will take years to filter through to results, and the mafia has started to fear accountability but the Judiciary and Police remain corrupt and stand in the way of progress.

True.

Maybe IK should instead focus on corruption and all the stolen money off poor Pakistani citizen...

Oh wait...

Bankruptcy laws along with ability to secure mortgages doesn't mean they (USA,UK) are not having secure economy.

Laws should be based such that even if IK is not the PM it benefits the country, imagine if he leaves and then these house subsidies will be given how?

of course only someone of your background would laugh at a poor man who's zameen has been stolen by the politicians you love and out of desperation rings his PM for help. This is low even for your standards.

Yes we are on our way. The question is how many of us will still be alive to see Pak becoming a first world country?

Did you not expect it to happen after artificially deflating US $ by the previous government, years of corruption, building projects for the optics?

Almost everyone knew what would it require and would happen if actions were taken within the paradigm of reality of the situation at hand.

Obviously, new taxes are imposed, and common men has to pay as long as Pakistani continue tolerate the politicians who had brought Pakistan where it is.

It is a slow process, neither Zardari ( ex Bhutto) dynasty nor Keema walay parathay dynasty willing nor capable of taking Pakistan out of it.

But sure, let me string two words with increase tax, everything is expensive in a hollow container.

Pakistan government states claim to a greater nation equates to a dillusional claim?

Good on IK. Promote your nation at all costs like any other nation, because lets face it, all the propaganda next door has resulted in Millions wanting to flee an 'incredible' India.

inflation did not happen due to past govt and years of corruption.

Even in 2011 by adopting right policies was the country bought back from hyper inflation.

Atleast write something that makes sense rather than the only mantra of Us dollar and years corruption causing inflation.

Taxes are being imposed on areas that shouldn't be imposed upon.

Baby formula for example is being taxes 17%, that too in a country where malnutrition is a problem.

Someone let this guy know we are taxed at 40% in the UK (based on average) and still broke. :)

Inflation is the result of Keynesian economics that is irrespective of a government.

I guess the military doesn't teach you everything.

THere is a difference betwen making minimum wage in Pounds and Dollars
and making Rs. 15 000 a month with rent, electricity and other bills.

Doing comparisons are easy if you dont know the ground realities of a country whose pm you support but dont even live in
