Dubai - Ehsan Mani, new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is on a mission to ensure that his cricket board’s governance is at its best. He revealed that his board will follow a policy of transparency too.

“For the team to keep performing well in world cricket, the governance of the board should be good, there should be accountability and there should be transparency. The New Zealand Cricket board, as well as Australia and South African boards all function that way. We want to bring transparency because if the structure of the board is not good, then it could be tough to make the Pakistan team stronger,” said Mani.

Former president of the International Cricket Council (ICC), who was chosen by the Pakistan Prime Minister and former captain Imran Khan to head the board further, added: “Our prime minister’s vision is very clear. He wants the team to be of high quality. He wants to make sure talents are not missed.”

Mani also expressed his strong views on the itinerary that had been made for Pakistan team in recent times. “I am surprised over who has agreed over such itinerary. It is unbalanced. Now on Pakistan team’s itinerary should be internally discussed and finalised. Pakistan should not be playing two Test series. We did that recently in England and are supposed to also play only two Tests against Australia in the UAE (next month) too. From now on, we will play only in a three-Test match series.”

Talking about resumption of India-Pakistan bilateral series, Mani, who played a pivotal role in discussions with Indian counterparts in 2003-04 series, said: “I feel restoration of bilateral series would not be possible before the Indian election next year. We want cricket to be depoliticised.”

Mani, who is happy with the current captain Sarfraz Ahmad and coach Mickey Arthur’s combination, feels that in future a coach will not be appointed by the chairman. “It should be done by a panel of thinking cricketers. We need a system rather than a personality based one. It should be total professional cricket based and cricketers based system with accountability to the board.”

Mani revealed that he will also be looking into the process of how players are being cleared to participate in foreign leagues. “I didn’t understand the rationale on what basis we committed our players for the leagues. The main criteria which I understand, was that how much money PCB gets and how much players will get. But they (the previous PCB hierarchy) did not look at the players’ workload. So I will examine all the leagues in which Pakistan players participates.”

Mani also wants to be discreet which leagues that Pakistan players are playing. “We need to do the due diligence in whichever leagues we are participating — whether they are credible or not. I am holding back my position (on UAE’s T10 league) until I get full satisfaction ... so I have requested the ICC to look into it again. I need assurance from the ICC because they have sanctioned it.”

Don't like all these bold pronouncements from Mani. First get some administrative wins under your belt before criticizing the last regime.

Agree with him on the two-test series nonsense. The only time it is justified if it's a series against Zimbabwe or Ireland. I hope the PCB stop agreeing to these lopsided itineraries in the future.

The last time Pakistan played a 5 Match Test Series was in 1992.

That is not good at all.

These 2 test series have to stop for Pakistan.

About time they make sensible points and raise them at the ICC about their itineraries.

Can you put some action behind your words please. Thanks.

He sure doesn’t understand a lot of things. Well, then understand it and then come out with the roti kapra aur makaan slogans

Great vision Sir - respect.

Why don't you start to walk the talk right now - ask CA to convert the 3 useless T20 from 24-28 OCT into 3rd Test. These days, T20 & Test squads are quite different - instead of bringing 8-9 new faces for 3 games without much practice, AUS will be more than happy to play a 3rd Test, which will give them a proper chance to compete in the series .... as PAK's record even in UAE under Misbah in the 2nd/3rd Test of the series is quite poor actually, once the tourists settle on to that mud bed.

I hope this guy doesn't end like another gas balloon. As long as he keeps 2 Test series intact instead of making it 1 Test, I'll be happy.

Outside of the big three - Ind, Eng and Aus - nobody plays 5-match series anymore.

It's too expensive to conduct for other boards.

Do you seriously think Ehsan mani is that dud that he willl keep on arranging t20 like the previous one did?he ias not in any mode to support t10 leagues etc.you re asking for too much,it cant be changed that late to convert t20 to tests?

Ehsan mani is about receive an education in how the modern cricket revenue model works. In the meanwhile we can enjoy his bland announcements that are but obvious.

Ehsan is doing good at least he knows where the things are going wrong.

Yes. It is pretty hard to argue against a more accountable, transparent administration being best practice for an organisation.

He is also right that organising 2 Test series as a standard is probably a path backwards rather than one that will improve the players, team or status of Pakistan cricket.

Sensible ideas. Now he has to actually implement them in an environment that has not always allowed common sense to flourish...

Getting a feel already that he has been talking too much too soon.
Although I am not against him, I hope he certainly hasn't bitten more than he could chew.

ICC doesn't decide 2 or 4 tests. It's decided by PCB and other board.

Sounds naive, needs a reality check in my opinion. I am also keeping track of how long it takes for him to fix the domestic pitches and the balls used.

That was the #1 criticism that Najam Sethi faced.

Mani says foreign office, embassies could help in revival of international cricket

Ehsan Mani, the newly-elected chairman of the PCB, wants to engage the foreign office and embassies in Pakistan to accelerate the resumption of international cricket in the country. Only a handful of teams have toured Pakistan since the attacks on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore in 2009. In recent years, the PCB has banked on financial incentives to bring other international teams to Pakistan, starting with an offer of $12,500 per player to get Zimbabwe on board for a short limited-overs tour. The players who toured as part of a World XI last September were paid $100,000 each by the PCB, and the second-string West Indies players who visited in April 2018 earned $25,000 each.

These are extra costs the PCB could do without, but they have been seen as long-term investments given the goal of bringing international cricket back to Pakistan. In addition, the PCB has also provided an unprecedented level of security to visiting teams, even purchasing its own bomb-proof bus. Cricket fans in Pakistan, for long starved of big games, have flocked to these games, with a total of over 100,000 spectators attending the three T20Is against West Indies in Karachi. Mani hoped the PCB, under his chairmanship, would take this process further forward, and said it might require dialogue at a diplomatic level too.

“Whoever has been in the PCB since 2009 has had the same wish, that cricket return to Pakistan. For this we need to undertake confidence-building measures, which have begun [before me] with the PSL, for which I give full marks. At the international level the second-string team of West Indies came here, Zimbabwe came, Kenya came, so work is going on. We need to build on this. I haven’t yet discussed this with the board, but there’s an ICC board meeting on October 20 in Singapore, where I hope to start this dialogue. I have faith that we will take it as far as we can, but at the same time… If you take a look at any country’s travel advisory, you’ll get an indication of which countries are ready to come and which ones aren’t. We have to engage with this at different levels – through our foreign office, through other countries’ embassies in Pakistan, to find out what their concerns are, why their people want to come to Pakistan or not.”

Apart from series against Australia and New Zealand in the UAE over the next two months, Pakistan have no ‘home’ series scheduled until next September, when they are due to host Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Mani said he would meet members of other boards during the ICC meeting in October and explore the possibility of their teams touring Pakistan.

All talk.

Mani can't do any of that.

Pitches are much better this year going by the scorecards possibly have nothing to do with Mani

Sethi did say that they are improving the standard of wickets produced but it will take some time to implement.
