The Pakistan Cricket Board has given special dispensation to Shoaib Malik by allowing him to join the men’s national cricket team in England on 24 July after spending time with his immediate family, whom he has not seen for nearly five months.

Shoaib’s wife, Sania Mirza, and one-year-old son, Izhaan Mirza Malik, have been in India, while Shoaib has been in Sialkot since the imposition of international travel ban due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the travel ban, Shoaib was involved for Peshawar Zalmi in the HBL Pakistan Super League, which commenced on 20 February before it was suspended on 17 March.

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan: “Unlike the rest of us, Shoaib Malik has not seen his immediate family for nearly five months due to his commitments and the subsequent international travel bans following the Covid-19 pandemic. As travel restrictions are now slowly easing out and there is an opportunity for a family reunion, it is appropriate that at a human level we show compassion as part of our duty of care and respect Shoaib’s request.

“We have spoken with the England and Wales Cricket Board who understand the situation and have agreed to make an exception by helping Shoaib enter the country on 24 July. Of course, Shoaib will follow the UK government’s policies on visitors entering the country before integrating with the side.”

The team will depart on 28 June for Manchester, before driving to Derbyshire for their 14-day quarantine period during which they will be allowed to train and practice. Apart from training and practicing, there will be intra-squad matches to compensate for the lack of practice matches due to non-availability of local teams as the ECB is yet to commence its domestic season.

Lol typical pakistan trying to bend the rules for the experienced players

What seems to come out of this is that this isnt a spontaneous thing - must have been discussed much earlier as logistics

1. Malik India visa/bookings to India
2. Arrangement in India for his quarantine for 2 weeks as per GOI requirements.

The actual location of quarantine is not known as yet but will be announced after MOU agreed.

If they're going to be training at the ground then I think we can pretty reasonably assume it'll be the Travelodge hotel at the ground.

Not much going on in Derbyshire apart from Alton Towers, so I think the players should be ok to adhere to the safety requirements.

Pretty cold ground is the County ground, bring some extra jumpers boys :)

I’m pretty sure that Alton Towers is in Staffordshire, actually!

This tour isn’t going to happen. Tomorrow’s Coronavirus tests will end it.

Here are the latest stats for the country of departure of returning travellers to Australia who tested positive on arrival here:

1. Pakistan 25%
2. UK 18%
3. Foreign cruise ships 14%
4. USA 9.4%
5. Brazil 7%

I just don’t believe that this team can all pass their Coronavirus tests. I’m guessing that 3-5 members of the squad will fail.

What do you do if Babar Azam or Shaheen Shah Afridi or Naseem Shah fail the test?

Paulo Dybala failed six consecutive Coronavirus tests over a nine week period. There’s no reason to think that the tour will proceed if a player or entourage member fails.

Is that what's being said w weeks quarantine in india

Very true.

But not too far from where Pakistan will be staying :)

Interestingly, so it seems that Malik could be going to India which has massive Covid numbers.

As per GOI, no foreign nationals including us OCI holders are permitted to enter India, which was one of the prime reason why IPL was indefinitely postponed. I would be surprised if GOI bend a rule for someone(highly unlikely).

I fear that Pakistan is even worse.

Four times as many returned travelers to Australia have tested positive in quarantine from Pakistan compared with India - but six times as many people have actually been tested after returning from India. It's a tiny sample, but it suggests infection rates in Pakistan may be 24 times higher than in India.

That suggests that the infection rate in young people in Pakistan is currently very high, but only being detected when they arrive in places which do more testing.

Is there a plan for what happens if one or more players test positive?

I'm serious: I can imagine Pakistan for example having to travel without Azhar, Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen and Naseem for example. Would they still play World Test Championship matches with a reserve team?

First set of Covid-19 tests being done today.

Confirmation by the Pakistan Cricket Board of travel arrangements for the tour of England to play three Test matches and three T20 inter*nationals has been met with relief and acclaim by fans around the globe.

Along with England’s three-match Test series against West Indies, which will precede the series against Pakistan, the much-awaited return of international cricket to the sporting calendar is expected to have a significant impact on efforts to restore normality to the sport.

Indeed, the procedures employed for a successful and safe conclusion to both series in England could be seen as a template that other nations will be able to follow.

To ensure all proper health and safety precautions are followed, the PCB decided to forego the preparatory training camp in Pakistan due to a recent upsurge in Covid-19 infections in the country.

Instead, the squad of 29 players and 15 officials were given guidance and asked to adhere to all relevant protocols to ensure that they eliminate any risk of contracting the virus before their departure for England.

In addition, the touring party will be tested today and on Thursday for any signs of Covid-19 infections. Once given the all-clear, they will fly to Manchester on Sunday, more than a month before the first Test begins on 30 July. The squad will then be confined to a bio-secure environment in Derbyshire, where they will complete the Government’s mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

Given the high-profile and special circumstances surrounding this tour, the ECB has allowed the visitors to carry out outdoor practice among themselves to maintain their fitness during the quarantine period.

Under normal conditions, touring sides are able to get valuable match practice in English conditions by playing against county teams. However, given that according to the ECB’s latest directives the domestic season is not expected to commence before at least the start of August, the Pakistan players will play matches among themselves, which should form an important part of their preparation for what promises to be a testing tour.

Apart from two players – Mohammad Amir, whose wife is expecting their second child, and batsman Haris Sohail, who after discussions with his family opted out of the tour due to coronavirus fears – there have been no major issues in convincing the Pakistani cricketers to make the journey overseas. However, veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik has been given special dispensation to visit his family in India before travelling to England on 24 July to join the rest of the squad.

All in all, the visitors will be bringing a well-balanced squad to English shores at the weekend. If history is a guide, this tour should provide plenty of talking points and competitive cricket despite the unusual and challenging circumstances.

Again, the positive tests in Australia and New Zealand today are significantly from India and Pakistan.

It’s becoming blindingly obvious that both countries are riddled with positive cases which haven’t been picked up due to inadequate testing.

I suspect that this week’s Pakistan squad testing will be the first accurate survey of community infection rates in Pakistan. And I think the results will be atrocious and shocking.

What if any Pakistani test positive. Will the tour still happen ?
