The newest member of the PSL franchise club, Multan Sultans strode into their first season with a lot of pizzazz and promise, and for a while, during the 2019 edition of the tournament, it appeared that they could pull off a shock title. However, the wheels soon fell off due to a combination of inexperience and possibly the fact that other competitors found their feet in the tournament but to their credit, Multan Sultans avoided the ignominy of being last in the table, a dubious honor reserved for the hapless Lahore Qalandars.

And so, on to their third season which will be played in entirety at home in Pakistan. First off, in the Head Coach position, they have recruited the very experienced and battle-hardened former England Coach, Andy Flower, who the Sultans will be looking to help guide their wards to victory. Whilst Flower is credited with masterminding England’s World T20 win in 2010 and their ascent to the top of the ICC Test rankings in 2011, the fact is that a lot of times, undue importance is given to coaches in such Twenty20 League competitions. This is because due to time constraints, there isn’t much space for a coach to organize a combination and the real work is done during the draft phase where the ‘perfect combinations’ are picked. So, whilst Andy Flower has a host of international experience to bring to the fore, it’s the chemistry of the players, which will largely drive how far the Sultans get in this edition of the tournament.

It is here that veteran performer Shahid Afridi’s experience of PSL will be crucial for the Sultans, who will be lead by a new captain in Shan Masood and he will be expected to lead from the front which could be a challenge. Regardless of the loss of firepower from last season’s line-up which included Shoaib Malik and Jonathan Charles, the Multan squad has some big names which could easily take them to the eliminator/qualifying stages.

Strengths

An array of proven international match-winners like James Vince, Moeen Ali, Ravi Bopara, and Rilee Rossouw to help with the batting, followed up by the tried and tested skills of Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan and backed by young Mohammad Ilyas is most likely to trouble all oppositions Multan come up against. Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir, Usman Qadir, and West Indies left-arm-spinner Fabian Allen (who will be on national duty until 7th March) will provide the slow-bowling support that will make the Multan Sultan a formidable opponent for the other PSL sides.

Weaknesses

As with any new outfit, the newbie status implies a degree of rawness that Andy Flower will need to counter and could be their downfall again. Whilst Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan may have the experience, it is also true that they are not at the peak of their powers and that could hurt Multan as they make a bid for the top. Shahid Afridi himself has had injury issues as we saw in BPL and one does wonder whether he has the ability to last the tournament.

Players to watch out for

Moeen Ali and James Vince are well known for their abilities, but the younger Pakistani players are the ones that we need to keep an eye out for. The Pakistan U19 captain Rohail Nazir is one to watch as is Zeeshan Ashraf who put in some excellent performances in the recent National T20 Tournament (2nd XI).

Verdict

Shan Masood lifting the trophy for Multan would be a great underdog story but one that is unlikely given the rawness of the combination at hand; A place in the playoffs is one that seems most likely for Multan Sultans.

Squad

Mohammad Irfan, Moeen Ali, Rilee Rossouw, Shahid Afridi, Zeeshan Ashraf, Ravi Bopara, James Vince, Junaid Khan, Sohail Tanvir, Shan Masood (c), Ali Shafiq, Khushdil Shah, Usman Qadir, Fabian Allen, Mohammad Ilyas, Rohail Nazir, Imran Tahir, Bilawal Bhatti, Wayne Madsen (cover for Fabian Allen).

Masood,vince,nazir,rossow,moen ali,khushdil,afridi,bopara,tanvir,irfan,junaid

Good team will trouble all teams.

My team is

Shan
Zeeshan
Rossow
Rohail nazir
Ravi Bopara
Moeen Ali
Kushdil Shah
Shahid Afridi
Tanvir
Irfan
Junaid

Hard to beat them depending on condition rotate and form take bopara out rotate and bring Imran Tahir in give Ilyas a go for Irfan for Junaid. May be bring Vince in depending how openers go about but with many bowling options could be one of MS major strengths. All variations covered in Spin and Bowling.

Cant wait for this team to have an epic fail and get a total phainta. Useless selections.

Have a strange feeling that this will be the team to beat. Apart from Afridi, they have the players who are not the most popular but very effective in t20. They will slip under the radar and provided they don't have a meltdown like last time, will top the group.

I'll have my eyes on Usman Qadir, I hope he gets chances in this PSL.

Big opportunity for zeeshan Ashraf, rohail nazir, khushdil shah and maybe qadir if given a chance to make a name and eye a spot in the Pakistan t20 team

PSL V teams looked more balanced than other seasons, apart from LQ who seems to be repeating the same mistakes

MS have a very good chance to get going in this season, but not sure how the three left arm seamers will do who’re well past their prime

They should go with this 11

J Vince f
S Masood c
R Rossouw f
R Bopara f
M Ali f
K Shah
S Afridi
R Nazir + e
S Tanvir
J Khan
M Irfan

Multan Sultans will go up against MCC tomorrow - lets see how they do in that game! May see some of the newer guys playing.

Five fast bowlers in Irfan, Junaid, Tanvir, Shafiq and Ilyas -- too many, could've easily let one go

Multan Sultans Squad Replacements:

- Mahmudullah replaces Moeen Ali
- Adam Lyth replaces Fabian Allen

Adam Lyth lol. PSL is in a different league when it comes to selecting average and random overseas players.

They’re conserving money. Ali Tareen has already announced that Rohail Nazir will be replacing Moeen Ali.

For bowlers, they already have Tahir, Afridi, Tanvir, Junaid, Irfan so Moeen’s bowling isn’t required.

This is not a platinum pick, he is replacing Fabian Allan and its not a formal draft which happens at start of PSL season. These are replacements for playoffs. Teams drafting in so many overseas players just for for matches is pretty commendable in my opinion.

Lyth averaged 38 with SR of 157 in 8 matches of vitality T20 blast and he has also played for Eng in 7 tests. David Malan was also considered average when he got selected for PSL. This where good scouting comes comes in for categories of Gold and Silver, selecting Platinum players which are known international faces by looking at your team combination is not that difficult.

Adam Lyth is an average player. Not interested in those stats. Most of the grounds in England are small so I wouldn't look too much into those stats. I would rather play a young Pakistani player than an average overseas player.

Bangladesh T20 captain Mahmudullah Riyad tested positive for Covid-19 and is set to miss all the matches in the Pakistan Super League, according to local media reports. He was scheduled to depart for Pakistan on Sunday but following the development he will remain in self-isolation.
